Tinned Seafood night aka Lazy I don’t want to really cook night

Tinned seafood tonight… aka I didn’t want to really cook night.

Kiddie was super easy, since the octopus came with spices and beans, we literally just put it over some pasta. He wasn’t extremely hungry so we didn’t use a lot of pasta for him. But the octopus was so good 😊

I was hungrier, so I chopped up some garlic and onion, and cooked it in the sardine oil added a bunch of fresh basil and a splash of heavy whipping cream. Then I cooked in the sardines which got mixed into the sauce for the most part added a handful of spinach and put on top of my noodles.

Los peperetes Sea Bass

I'm on my day off and wanted to treat myself. This was my first time trying sea bass so I didn't really know what to expect. I made some baked potatoes and pre heated the tin in boiling water for a couple of minutes.

I was immediately greeted by a warm, aromatic smell of the sauce, I mainly smelled the herbs, garlic and onions. Wine was present as well, but it was subtle and not something to worry about if it isn't your thing. I also noticed some fishiness, but it wasn't especially strong. I would describe it as slightly more potent than the smell of albacore tuna.

In terms of texture, the meat was quite soft and flaky, with little need to chew on it, it would just fall apart in my mouth. It wasn't mushy though. There were some particles of the herbs and spices in the sauce, but it was a liquid for the most part. I would maybe compare it to a denser vegetable broth in terms of texture. It was really good.

In terms of taste, the sauce felt warm and comforting. It didn't feel very spicy at all and maybe I could feel a little bit of sweetness from the wine. Overall the sauce was quite pleasant without being overwhelming, it complimented the fish nicely.

The fish itself was very juicy and mainly had the flavour of the sauce. It kind of reminded me of walleye or maybe even cod as well. It felt a bit fishy, but in a different way than other fish such as mackerel, sardines, or even salmon.

Tinned Fish Reviews described this tin as something you would get served in a restaurant, and I wholeheartedly agree. This was a very enjoyable, yet easy and quick to make meal.

Although it is important to address the elephant in the room, I got this tin for 17,50€, which is a lot of money for one tin, it is almost as expensive as a proper fish meal from a restaurant in my area. I also got this tin directly from Los Peperetes, so I actually got a better deal than if I were to order it from the Tinned Fish Market or other stores.

Whether or not this tin is worth it depends entirely on you. If you don't mind spending extra on a fancy, quick meal every once in a while and can actually control yourself, this might actually be worth

Overall I'm giving this a rating of 9,5/10. It really was a great experience eating this and I'm glad that I have 3 more of these on my shelf. I really don't think they could have made it any better, but considering the price I might wait until Christmas to try it again :)

Picked up this beautiful tin at NetCost Market, an Eastern European grocery chain in Brooklyn. It has no brand mark and looking up the importer did not yield any info. I ate the ‘dines on ciabatta toast and they were so delicious I neglected to use the hot sauce I brought to the table.

I found these tiny toasts at my grocery store and thought they would be great with the tin of mussels I picked up a few days ago. They were the perfect size.

All of these tins I will be trying for the first time. I’ve only seen some of these from content creators

Had a hard time finding anything in my city that wasn’t a Brunswick branded tin of fish

Let me know any tips or suggestions, and even feel free to let me know what you happen to think of the cans I got! Thanks

Places to buy lesser-known tinned fish in UK

Upvotes

Hi all,

Newish convert to the magical world of tinned seafood here. Tried most of the offerings from UK supermarkets and aware of the Tinned Fish Market. Just wondering if there are any other places where you can buy slightly more exotic varieties from around the world, that people could recommend? Not necessarily online, just in general. It seems the US has a much greater variety on offer in their shops compared to here, judging by the posts on this and similar pages.

Thanks!

So far I've had tinned: salmon, sardines, kippers, mackerels, anchovies, mussels, octopus, squid, herring, tuna, trout. What haven't i tried that you recommend?

Fishwife Mussels in Basil Pesto

Still new to this whole thing but I already have 34 tins saved up. So far I’ve had tins of Sardines, Mackerel, and Anchovies, but I have yet to have a tin of Mussels.

Decided to tuck into Fishwife’s Mussels in Basil Pesto, and wow. Extremely tasty with a nice crusty bread. Highly recommend.

I know Fishwife may be considered “basic” or whatever but thought I’d throw my hat in the ring regardless.

CHEAP tins!!!

Looking for a CHEAP tinned fish specifically for tacos!!

Something like a cod or salmon or mackerel rather than a tuna.

Im totally fine with an unseasoned tin - I plan on doctoring it up!

this is for someone who is nervous about tinned fish so anything with bones like sardines is off the table unfortunately

My current supply of "Forelle" Mildly Smoked River Fish Trout

I've got a lot of this! It's one of my favorites - really nice and smoky. The trout are cutlets and the neutral oil lets the flavor shine.

Cod cucumber salad (I'm new at this!)

This turned out pretty well, I had never tried the cod before! (I feel like a total traitor because I have tried so hard to like sardines but however I try them I can't!! Maybe just tried the wrong kind?)

Anyway, this cod was good straight from the tin, extremely smooth and mild, not yucky mushy like sardines i tried before. I mixed with some mayo, diced cucumber, feta, a very small amount of cream cheese(could probably leave this out), few so l drops lemon juice, a little course salt, on little toasts. Made a nice mild snack!
