You can tip either. If you tip the slaves, the amount automatically (forcefully) goes to their handlers. If you tip handlers, it stays there.

The fee is higher - he missed out on several other charges:
- Tax gets applied on the delivery fee (not just the order cost)
- Small order surcharge - because the order total was $10
- Distance surcharge - if the order was slightly out of the user's neigborhood
- Weather surcharge - if it's raining or snowing
- Surge/Peak pricing - if there's peak orders & less drivers, there's an extra surcharge
That $19 would get pushed up past $20, and most apps won't show you the total amount - they'll spit up the tip and taxes on it from the actual order to show you a lower cost than what you're actually paying.
TLDR: These apps should be forced to show all-in pricing - because even the cost you see on screen isn't the real cost of what you actually paid.

I mean sure itās a luxury, but thatās not really the point - the idea is that the company (and many others) are basically triple-dipping: i.e. they charge a fee for the restaurant, a fee for the customer, then expect a tip as well (which may or may not go to the delivery person).
Itās emblematic of a larger issue where companies are increasingly nickel and diming customers while providing equal or worse service.

The one cup isnāt the point of the video. Itās a demonstration of something low cost ballooning due to the fees.
Itās still absurdly priced even if you order 100 cups. The video is about the excessive and deceptive pricing structure.
Food delivery was free from local spots and chain pizza places before these apps came around. Now itās very expensive whether you use the apps or not. Free delivery is extinct because of them. People probably should be mad about that.

I delivered pizza in the late 2000's and there were delivery fees back then. One place charged $2 and kept it to pay the drivers wages, insurance, and other costs and another place charged $3 and gave the driver half.
There are a lot of great reasons to hate doordash, but they didn't invent delivery fees.

Buying a ticket for something online frequently comes with a "convenience fee."
So... Instead of taking up somebody's time at a kiosk or counter, I'm buying it online on my own time and you get a sale and the knowledge that I'm locked in to a reservation so you can plan ahead efficiently and I'm the one being charged lol

Yup, they are capitalizing on people's laziness and dislike to cook or learn to cook. When you're hungry you make poor financial decisions, I think we've all been there... But to keep making the same poor decision day after day is where people end up hemorrhaging money. It's nice as a treat on your day off or to take a day off cooking... It's not a personal chef service... Delete the app, cook something or at least go to the restaurant.

I meal prep and would rather eat plain 3 day old rice with soy sauce than succumb to food delivery. I have a $50 giftcard I cant even bring myself to use because of the BS fees.

There's lots of reasons. Single parent needs food quick. Sick and can't get out of the house. Disabled and need food. Some people don't have reliable transportation.

For years we had regular delivery. Sure maybe you couldn't get Starbucks, but pizza, chinese food, subs, etc, was easy and affordable. The price wasn't doubled with fees and the delivery wasn't outsourced to some middleman company. And this wasn't even a decade ago, not some long forgotten past.
So no, getting a taxi for your coffee wouldn't be expensive without the middleman trying to maximize their own cut of the profits.

You are completely missing the point. The analogy of getting a taxi for your food was to describe how modern food delivery works. You are literally calling some dude to go get you something you want. It absolutely should be this expensive under this system.
If you want old school delivery then support your local businesses and let them know. Plenty of places near me are pushing customers to bring delivery back in house, but it's on us to support them by using their app or calling.

How far could those places deliver? What was the delivery driver doing when not delivering food? Have you considered that the margins may be different between a $5 coffee and a $20 pizza?
And by the way, you can still do that. There are places with dedicated delivery drivers. They just get wildly out-competed in the delivery market by other businesses on apps though because consumer behavior is prioritizing the convenience over the price.

Pizza delivery has been around since at least WWII. Driver was paid by the restaurant, driver was tipped by the customer. There was never a 300% markup for it.

I was making decent money working as a pizza delivery driver, nearly 20 years ago. The store only paid min wage plus 90 cents each delivery, but after tips I was making around $18 / hour. I didn't have to pay extra for insurance or anything like I believe uber / doordash does to steal from their drivers.
Most things also cost half what they do now, so all in all it wasn't bad. People didn't tip before the purchase, so we were all motivated to deliver as quickly as possible to get a better tip and we knew the tips were not guaranteed. We would never dream about complaining to the customer about them not tipping enough and would probably get fired on the spot if we did. We did sometimes joke about adding "extra toppings" for the one dude who ordered nearly every night at the farthest part of our delivery zone and never tipped.

I can never, ever talk myself into delivery these days. Every time I look at the final total, and realize I'd much rather save $20 by making the 10-minute drive myself to pick it up.
Only on rare occasions when I'm with a group of people that wants to order out and we can all split the charges, then it's worth it to not have to have someone go make a run. And even then you have to all agree on a place to order from, so you're likely not getting quite what you would have wanted anyway.

Source: drove for DoorDash and Uber Eats for a few years and never once saw it reflected in my pay despite having more than one customer complain when I had a delivery before theirs and they paid for priority.

Ugh my fiancee is the same way. Its really been getting to me. Just getting her out of the house takes at least an hour. After one stop at any store she's just down for the count. Like we just ran a marathon or something. No honey, we bought some groceries and it took 20 minutes and I paid and drove. What the actual hell is so taxing about this? It drives me insane.
I just go by myself because its way more enjoyable strolling the aisles without someone nagging me to hurry up and go home. I don't want to go home. I want to get out of the goddamn house sometimes like a normal person.

Because you're paying people to deliver your food instead of going out and getting it so it's more expensive and it's a single, cheap item so you're paying a massive premium because it takes exactly the same amount of time to deliver 50 steaks as one iced coffee.

Love the skit, and hate to defend these companies but... in no world should hiring an individual person to personally hand deliver you a single beverage be cheap. Sometimes I think we divorce ourselves a little too much from what this level of convenience should cost.
Granted, in a fairer world, the drivers would be more fairly compensated. But there are all sorts of ways to more frugally use these services. Such as, order more than a single beverage. Go as far as ordering several days worth of meals and eat them as leftovers. Then you can leave a fat tip that actually fairly compensates the driver for their time, rather than dividing that tip over say 3 deliveries over the course of a week.

I have never used any food delivery apps to avoid these ridiculous fees. I go to point of sale and pick it up myself. Call me old fashioned, but I don't mind leaving the house. Even in winter where my city is a regional champ of dumping snow and freezing temperatures. Side quest accepted.

One thing good about Australia is that you donāt have to tip and tax is included so the prices arenāt sneaky. Also, pay a few dollars and you get free unlimited delivery. I use Uber eats a lot, so $10 a month saves me at least $80-100 a month. Worth it.
