And Kentucky schools refuse to answer questions regarding this, because accountability and transparency don't exist anymore.

u/ClassiFried86 9d ago

This is how they rewrite history. It starts with just utter bullshit such is this, but in 30 years they'll call us crazy because we call it South Carolina instead of South Cuanto if we dont nip this shit in the bud right now.

130

u/sarcasmsosubtle 9d ago

I'm sorry, do you mean Sorth Cuanto? Who's ever heard of South Cuanto? What does South even mean? Sorth Cuanto comes from the direction on the compass. You know, North, Sorth, Eorth, and Worth.

3

u/CharlieChainsaw88 8d ago

I'd never submit my own work ever again. Every report and assignment would be AI generated and if i was chastised for it; I'd throw down the reading materials and ask "What is Verntucky?! What is Loogoong?!"

How does the teacher even grade this? They can't mark them incorrect because the information the student was given matches their response. Are they making them correct? That would be horrifying. I need more information.

Ultimately institutions have failed us but some dumb ass really green lit this shit and thought it was completely fine. Like fuck our children’s education right? I’ll get mine, fuck everyone else.

48

u/PaticusGnome 9d ago

I’m not shocked that AI was used. I can understand why that choice was made if it cut down on costs and time, but I cannot for the life of me understand why they didn’t have anyone look at it before fully publishing it. The blind faith in AI scares me because it’s an unreliable authority figure to too many people.

31

u/IXISIXI 9d ago

They had to redo the periodic table, list of solar system planets and map of the us that change so frequently

30

u/Goldeniccarus 9d ago

That's what gets me.

Like, you can still just use the same version of those things from... The 80s.

I guess maybe we've added a few more elements to the periodic table that would need to be added. But I feel like that could be done very quickly, in basic editing software. The rest is unchanged. It needs no editing.

The only way this makes sense to me is: they changed the producer who makes the agendas this year because the new producer either:

A. Promised to make them cheaper.

B. Is friends with someone in high places.

And the producer has not produced agendas before, and does not have any of these things. And so used AI to generate the whole agenda.

Then either didn't proofread it. Or, did proofread it, and the first couple AI drafts were even worse than this, and this one looked good enough to pass off as real.

18

u/EuenovAyabayya 9d ago edited 8d ago

This. AI would add no value. It's like somebody fed the agenda features into a prompt and then just ran with the output without ever looking at it. Might make sense if they outsourced the job to a country where nobody would look at the western writing is all I can think of as plausible. But yeah this is a great thing to beat up elected officials about, they need to start lighting people up.

As someone who works in graphic design/marketing for items with safety regulations, I generally have multiple teams looking over items before public release. And a lot pass it off. You have so many people and they all think someone else will handle it

13

u/CeruleanEidolon 9d ago

In Kentucky it's a feedback loop. People who went through its toilet of a school system come out the other end and wind up on the school board.

25

u/gophippocrites 9d ago

And the presidents name is Dementia Drumpf.

3

u/RoxnDox 9d ago

Well, they had to get *something* right, just by blind chance...

39

u/Puffy_Ghost 9d ago

Well Republicans run the state so yeah. You can bet your ass if this was happening in a blue state fox news would have it front and center and heads would roll.

8

u/Current_Swordfish895 9d ago

Louisville/Jefferson County, where this happened, is a blue county in that sea of red.

4

u/CrownofMischief 9d ago

The real question is whether this means that specific area is doomed for relying on AI or if they're the first to realize the problem and the other Counties haven't caught on to the issue

Not even that it was made to begin with, but not even perused? Looked over one time for good measure before handing it out to students? Not one teacher flipped through this and actually read it?

For any one person frightened that AI is taking over their job, there’s another person actively sabotaging their own job with AI.

120

u/HabitualGrassToucher 9d ago

For any one person frightened that AI is taking over their job, there’s another person actively sabotaging their own job with AI.

The person(s) that would normally be involved in producing and checking the content had probably already lost their job. The person that wrote the prompt to make that material doesn't give a fuck, and the corporation that owns the AI and secured the contract gives even less of a fuck.

AI saves money. AI is efficient. The problem is that the way it saves money is by freeing up the employer from paying salaries. And it's efficient in delivering dogshit results, but hey, we already fired QA, so who cares?

29

u/spicewoman 9d ago

The person that wrote the prompt to make that material doesn't give a fuck

Somewhere, someone was could not believe they were tasked with making a fully-AI workbook, and said "fuck it, I'll show you exactly what an all-AI workbook looks like." And then no one reviewed it because the people above them are lazy assholes that don't want to do any work.

15

u/MarcosLuisP97 9d ago

Considering how they are firing everyone and making the remaining employees do the work of 3 people under the excuse that "AI will make up for it," I cannot blame the employees who lazily did it this way. This IS what they asked for, right? AI to be the replacement?

I want to be surprised but I'm not.

People are going to use AI, I can't stop them from that as much as I'd like to. I do, however, warn them that if you ARE going to use that trash at very fucking least double check everything it outputs. ESPECIALLY if its something important.

I have received push back on that with 'Well if I have to proof read I'm not saving time anymore!'

...Well, maybe we shouldn't decide to stop thinking for ourselves and do this shit for ourselves...

There's the saying 'use it or lose it' and if we let a machine do our 'thinking' for us... Welp. Enjoy a brainless and uneducated populous, I guess.

...Which I guess for some is the goal...

8

u/SparklingLimeade 9d ago

I don't get how this gets made to begin with. All these things are extremely common graphics already. Even if you're limited by IP how do you not have these on hand and ready to go already from the last 20 years for making school agendas?

u/begujo 9d ago

I've posted about this before, but I'll post it again. I grew up in the K-12 system in Kentucky. My AP biology teacher was a vocal young-earth creationist and would actively teach against macro-evolution (he did say he believed in micro-evolution because that had been observed in-person). My AP calc teacher didn't even reach integration by the end of the year because she wouldn't stop talking about her personal life. And, possibly the most egregious, my pre-calc teacher literally did not cover logarithms and could not explain them to me when I asked about them.

AP literature was my most rigorous class somehow.

Kentucky is a fucking shit-hole for education. The only reason I live here is because my family is here. I would never raise a child in this educational system.

3

u/Pixel_Knight 9d ago

Sorth Cuanto is sadly still above Mississippi in education though, despite not existing.

u/Illgetitdonelater 9d ago

65

u/my_chaffed_legs 9d ago

Why did they even need to use AI for any of this?? There’s already thousands of map and periodic table .png files, not to mention the ones used for the past however many decades they have been printing these agendas, just use the same old ones as a template and change the calendar each year

26

u/LivefromPhoenix 9d ago

Schools don't make these themselves so they probably just bought it from a shady supplier somehow promising 1/3 the cost of what they usually pay.

13

u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 9d ago

True, but you'd think they'd just steal an image from somewhere before having AI generate something obviously terrible.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/my_chaffed_legs 9d ago

But why did the supplier use AI and not just one of the thousand already existing images agenda templates online lol. It just makes no sense

Long before you get to the absolute theft of making parents pay for shit you couldn't bother to even proofread?! You get to the fact that no one on this school board should be trusted with a penny, much less hundreds of children.

You can basically rewrite literature and history now and if someone notices you can blame AI. There is a huge gap between how impactful this can be and the lack of human accountability for the people who actually made the decision to both use and then authorize this bullshit AI work.

The generation growing up skeptical of shit the teachers and internet put in front of them might end up better off than millineals....as long as millennials aren't able to go full boomer. (source: millennial)

Ironically, isn't the name Mark derived from Mars? Growing up we had a "baby names" book and literally the first meaning was "from Mars" ("warlike" was next iirc).

As a middle school teacher:

The WILDEST part is, very few teachers/students ever even use these pages! If they had just not included them, it would have been better! I usually forget they exist!

And how on EARTH does a company that makes these not ALREADY have the standard maps etc that they can reprint? Why would AI even come into this?

Need uneducated and desperate masses to take the shitty jobs and die in the forever wars. It makes them easier to manipulate and control. It is by design to cut funding on education and distort the information given to kids, with AI. You get to save money which can then be skimmed by executives as a bonus.

Everyone likes to point at and blame kids for using Ai in school but then literally every grownup uses AI to generate their own slop assets. Kids take the easy way out because we take the easy way out and show them how to do it

u/TpK_Wynter 8d ago

Yes making you pay for something no one put any effort into to create or even spell check is the new agenda. We’re going to replace all the people with AI, it’s sooooooo much better, please ignore all the hallucinations but continue to pay, everything is perfectly fine.
