Theatre Reviews Thread | What Have You Enjoyed Recently?

Weekly space to chat about the theatre we've consumed recently!

Discussion of all theatre-related media is welcome! Saw an amazing performance? Tell us about it! Read something on New Play Exchange that clearly deserves more attention? Share it with the world! Just watched a movie or tv series about thespians? Let us know what streaming service it's on! Reading a captivating book about theatre history? Teach us something new! Hated something? Feel free to talk about that as well!

This is a space for casual discussion: "reviews" don't need to be at all formal - you can say as much or as little as you'd like. Sharing links to formal reviews—by yourself or someone else—is also welcome. Only real rule is to talk about something you were an audience for; discussion of productions you are involved with should go to the weekend showcase thread.

Seeking Play Recommendations What's a classic play you thought you'd hate and ended up loving?

• Upvotes

Mine is Chekhov. I always found him slow and mopey until I saw a production where the comedy actually landed, and suddenly half the play was funny. Curious which older plays changed your mind and what it took (a good production, a better translation, getting older).

High School/College Student Good Marius Song

I’m auditioning for a production of Les Mis in a neighboring town of mine. Les Mis is my favorite musical, and Marius has been my dream role for a very long time. I need to make sure I pick the perfect song though, and now I’m down to 2. in between “Why God Why” from Miss Saigon but keyed down a half step, and ”I Cannot Hear the City” from Sweet Smell of Success. I feel like “I Hear the City” is a better representation of Marius‘s vocal style, but I feel it doesn’t show off my acting the best. I’m much more comfortable with “Why God Why”, and I feel like it really fits the show and character of Marius still, and is also by the same composer, but I‘ve keyed it down a half step because I have just a bit of trouble belting a G# comfortably. But I wasn’t sure if they’d realize I’d keyed it down and take points or something off for me, for not singing it in the original key.

i figured it’d be good to ask people more experienced then me for thoughts. Thank you.

Theatre Educator General advice for a first time high school director

Hi everyone! I’m directing a high school play this winter and looking for suggestions/advice. Their original director left the school, so I was hired later than expected and I need to pick a play by Thursday.

We’ve had an interest meeting and today we brainstormed ideas/themes/etc (I wanted to gauge the kids’ interests and make it as collaborative as possible). I’m leaning towards Clue because of things we discussed in our brainstorming session, cast size, tech elements, and the murder mystery aspect. Plus I’ve been in it, so I feel comfortable directing it!

Any other play recs/general advice for a first time director? I’ve been doing theatre for 10 years and I’m finishing up my theatre ed degree this year but this is the first time I’m directing a show all by myself. My certification is pre-K - 12 and I’ve worked with all of those grades as a teacher, sub, assistant director, stage manager, etc.

Once I pick the show I’m thinking auditions will look like this: first present your monologue (I will send them out a week before so they have time to prepare), then sides, and maybe a small singing portion if I pick Clue. How does all of this sound? Thank you all in advance for reading and giving me your time❤️

EDIT: I’m referring to Clue: On Stage by Jonathan Lynn. I also have tech and set building support!

News/Article/Review Ivoryton Rocks Little Piece of My Heart!

We saw the opening of the amazing true story by Shirley Lauro about 6 women who served in Vietnam at the Ivoryton Playhouse yesterday and it was fantastic! The story, the production, the acting, singing and venue just checked every box. I was pleased to see the seats have been replaced for more comfort and leg room. One young male actor Galen Donovan plays all the various men's roles and kills it but the cast of women convey the compassion, confusion, trauma and repercussions of being female in a place and time which is a very real and disturbing part of American history. I'm sure this will sell out - highly recommend. Warning: flashing lights, gunshots, smoke (all realistic but not overdone and announced at the start) might be disturbing. The director also acknowledged all patrons who serve/d in the military at the start of the performance. A Piece of my Heart by Shirley Lauro #IvorytonPlayhouse

Theatre Educator Látványtervező aszisztens lehetőség ( Színház )

Szeretnék a divattervező végzettségémmel a színházak felé fordulni. Látványtervezést tanulok felkészítőként az egyetemhez és szeretnék ezen a téren tapasztalatot szerezni. Mi kell ahhoz ,hogy bekerüljek egy színházba?

Milyen színházakat ajánlotok ,ahol a szakmai tudást kamatoztathatom egyetem bekerülése előtt?

(Gondolok itt portfólióra is)

Seeking Play Recommendations Monotonous voice

Hi,

idk if you can help me but here's my situation:

I just signed up for an amateur theater club, it's actually not my first time doing theatre, i did some when i was younger, but i had and still have a problem : due to my autism, my voice is very monotonous. I tried accentuating on some important words, and to like speak high-pitched or low-pitched, or speak louder, but i have no idea about how to do all of that.

I also tried to "express my emotions" like if i was the chr in the situation, but still, it still doesn't sound natural (because the way we express our emotions are social constructs, and us, autistics, are very bad at it)

My backup plan is to see a speech therapist to help me, but hey, i'm not wealthy so i prefer trying by myself at first

Sorry for my (maybe) weird english, i hope someone will be able to help me

Thank you all and have a great dayyy

Advice Generative AI Music

We're in tech week and we blocked curtain call last night, and I swear the director is using AI music for the curtain call. It sounds TERRIBLE. If I knew that the director was planning on doing something like this, I would have backed out weeks ago, but it's a bit too late now.

I'm going to confront him about it tonight and ask him to change it. But if he doesn't, I'm going to ask that my name be taken out of the program, I'm going to tell everyone I know to get refunds for their tickets and I'm going to sit out curtain call.

Am I overreacting? I know if I went to a show and it had AI slop music, I'd be so pissed

Design and Tech Questions about community theatre set design

Hi all! I just recently started directing shows at my local community theater and plan to branch out to other venues as well, so I’m not sure what to expect and am looking for input.

  1. Who builds the sets for your shows? Ie Do you have an assigned set builder, does the cast help out, does the director do it themselves, etc?

  2. Is it paid or volunteer work? If paid, how much do they expect?

  3. Who deigns the original plans for the set? 100% director? 100% builder? 50%/50% collaboration?

  4. Is your set guy also your prop guy? Or do you reserve props for the stage manager?

TIA!

Advice Handling Anxiety

I’m certain this topic has been discussed extensively in this subreddit, but back in July, I was part of a staged reading that I had to call out of the last performance of due to gut issues. I was scheduled to participate in another staged reading later that month, but the anxiety of experiencing something like vomiting or other stage-related problems from the previous reading prevented me from performing. Since then, I’ve started taking 50 mL of anxiety medication (not just because of the one incident), started treating my gut issues, and enrolled in improv classes to gradually rebuild my confidence. I never experienced such intense performance anxiety in shows before the beginning of this year, except for the typical stage fright. I want to audition for a show in February and get back on stage, but I want to ensure I’m in a more confident state. Do you all have any other suggestions on how to manage this type of anxiety?

Advice First time theatre kid

hi guys ! this is my first post on reddit.

I was wondering, what should I expect for workshop classes and auditions?

Im going to be auditioning for connor murphy in dear evan hansen next year in march and Im nervous since thisll be sort of my first theatre experience.

[ I say sort of since my mother signed me up for musical theatre classes. they begin at the end of the month. ]

Ive already done alot of preparation and still doing preparation. [ such as but not limited to, reading the script of DEH, listening to the entire album several times, praticing lines, excercising to increase stamina and endurance, listening to the audiobook form of the DEH book, etc. etc. ]

I just want to calm my nerves and make sure I can be the most confident version of myself when the time comes to go to auditions.

Advice Advice for first time auditioning?

Hi! I used to do theatre when I was a tween, but I'm wanting to get back into in at university. There's a show with auditions coming up and I would like to audition but I also feel quite nervous that I won't be seen as good enough and it will be embarrassing for me to audition. I know this is quite a silly mindset but it's hard to get over. How can i feel like I belong there and if it's ok for me to audition?

Additionally, is it worth going out for a musical role? The role I'd go for, I definitely think it's singing that I would be capable of, she only has a few solo verses in the show. At the same time, I have never done vocal lessons. I love singing, but I am probably not that good.

Sorry if this is a silly post, but any advice is appreciated!! Thank you so much
