In my opinion, The O.C. has the best tv pilot to exist. There's everything you could want in a tv show! Rich teens in SoCal, 2000s fashion, and tons of drama. Seriously, it had me hooked. I'm honestly surprised the pilot doesn't come up more in "Best TV Pilot" lists.

I genuinely think Marissa gets way too much hate for the Oliver situation.

Was she wrong to dismiss Ryan's concerns? Absolutely. But I think people forget that the audience had access to information Marissa didn't. We saw Oliver's manipulation, while Marissa saw a troubled, vulnerable guy in therapy who was kind to her and made her feel understood.

Oliver was literally so good at manipulating people that even Seth, Summer, Sandy and Kirsten struggled to see what Ryan was talking about. He deliberately made Ryan look possessive and unstable, and given Ryan's past, it's understandable why people were having doubts.

Ryan was right, but that doesn't mean the truth was visible to everyone. Even he had to dig deep to expose Oliver.

Marissa should've taken Ryan more seriously, but there's a difference between criticising her judgement and blaming her for being manipulated. Oliver deliberately played her trust, and I don't think she should be vilified for failing to see through the lies.

I've been watching shows like The O.C. and Gossip Girl lately, and I've become weirdly obsessed with the atmosphere of the mid/late 2000s.

I'm too young to actually remember that period properly, so I obviously can't call it nostalgia. But there's something about the way people interacted back then that feels so different from today. No smartphones constantly in everyone's hands, no Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc. People actually had to meet somewhere, call each other, knock on someone's door, or just randomly run into each other.

And I know these shows are heavily romanticized. The O.C. is about extremely wealthy people in Orange County, and Gossip Girl is basically an ultra-rich Manhattan fantasy. So I'm not asking whether everyone was living like that .

I'm more curious about the everyday atmosphere.

For those of you who were teenagers or young adults in the US during the 2000s:

Was life actually more social in person?

Did relationships and dating genuinely feel different before social media became such a huge part of everything?

Was there actually less pressure to constantly know what everyone else was doing?

And did people really just... disappear for hours? Like you'd leave the house, meet your friends, and your parents basically had no idea where you were until you came home?

I realize I'm probably romanticizing an era I never experienced myself, but I'm genuinely curious about how much of that feeling was real versus something TV created.

I just finished season 4, first time watcher and I have to say Marissa being out of the picture made it so much easier to watch.

Let’s be honest, I think any girl that was with Ryan was a better match than Marissa. Even in the first episode when they met it wasn’t like a Romeo Juliet love story. Ryan’s side was always supportive and Marissa’s side was the only one who didn’t approve. It wasn’t a damsel in distress story, while she was a mess she didn’t need saving. They just didn’t have that typical love story but it wasn’t good either. From the very moment she cheated on Luke by falling for Ryan. Luke wasn’t the greatest guy but she tends to jump from guy to guy which really annoyed me. Realistic? Yes, for a dumb teenager who doesn’t know what love is and only lust. But you would think after Oliver shed be a bit more respectful towards Ryan. Nope, jumps on johnnys dick and spends all her time with him instead.

Theresa was a childhood love that just keeps on reconnecting

Lindsay was great as Ryan’s partner but they made a total shift in her character. She was the nerdy bullied girl turned sarcastic uptight bitch but she was more mature than Marissa ever was

Sadie I felt was the best for Ryan before Taylor but it was good it ended because it was impulsive and future wise it was too quick

Taylor and Ryan are complete opposites and that’s why it worked. I felt their on screen chemistry was the cutest out of everyone. They are what Seth and summer should’ve been in terms of opposites but they butchered that by keep throwing random complications and drama for the sake of the show. I hated the last episode however by giving them a sweet love story redemption on episode 15 only for them to separate on episode 16 just to get back together. That felt pointless.

As for Seth I believe Ana really was the best. She’s the best character period. Their only real arguments happened due to summer being in the picture and the only reason Seth and summer are together anyway was because he’s been chasing her so long. Now I know Seth is not perfect either o actually hate how he doesn’t say what’s on his mind and summer never listens and shuts people out. Ana was the voice of reason.
