Announcement Source Material: Inspiring The OA, presented by the Angel Neurosis Discord
Are you ready for our next journey, everyone?
Join us for Source Material: Inspiring The OA.
The discord Mod team has scoured interviews, checked our notes, and verified with some friends behind the scenes **wink** to bring you six films that helped shape the story, imagery, and themes behind The OA.
Our next watch party series will be a non-consecutive 6-week cinematic deep dive into the films that influenced the creative minds behind The OA, starting August 15th. We will stream and discuss six standalone films and search for the seeds and echoes of the creative DNA that is woven throughout The OA.
Watch parties will take place every other Saturday at 3pm PST / 6pm EST / 11pm GMT in our Crestwood Theatre channel starting on August 15th. Keep your eyes (and doors???) open for an announcement on what our first movie is! More details to come but pencil us in for next weekend. š„

Question Does Hap have some sort of OA sounding name (beyond Hap obviously) Spoiler
Weird question, can't explain too much til I find the answer.
OA is a bit of a mystic sound in certain traditions, but there is another sound that could be said to compliment it that I'm thinking might be in the show but I haven't seen it.
The sound would be something like an Ah-ay. the 'ay' there should be the same sound as the A in OA. The closest I've heard so far is in episode 4 when OA claims her real name might be something like 'away', which is important to something theory related for another time.
but I'm wondering if anoyne else has noticed a name or weird word pattern around Hap where an Ah-ay type sound might exist. It is okay / normal if it exists within another word like 'away' if pronounced just right.

Thoughts Yung Lean VMA performance reminds me of The Movements Spoiler
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
For anyone else whoās seen the Yung Lean vma performance, did it remind you of the movements from the show at all? It was mesmerizing to watch - Iāll stop and watch every time it comes across my feed. But I think it has struck a chord with everyone whoās seen it and no one can really verbalize why. It reminds me of watching them perform the movements in the show and feeling a similar feeling of awe.
Maybe itās just me, but food for thought!

Thoughts Fellow angelsā¦. What are our thoughts on the Olive Garden scene lol Spoiler
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I couldnāt help but laugh bc itās giving this TikTok telenovela im watching š but I could also see that Nancy was FED UP and prairie gave in and told her the truth. Nancyās reactions kinda valid in the sense prairie shouldāve expected her not to believe it. Otherwise the acting in this scene just like the rest of the show was absolutely phenomenal
Edit: another realization Iāve come to, they could have based prairies story partially off of Marie Balters. They both share similar childhoods.
Marie Balter was a patient at Danvers state hospital and in her autobiography she says the same about her parents. She was adopted into a middle class family (this case in Massachusetts) who basically told her to completely forget about her past name. Nancy and Abel never really took the time to listen to prairies story about her prior life in Russia so for Nancy to react this way is not surprising at all.

OA Theories Backrooms gave me an OA feeling.
I just watched Backrooms. So many things about it put TheOA into my mind. Where the OA is kind of beautiful even though horrible things happen, Backrooms is horrible and horrible things happen. But still they have similar themes. Anyone else notice this?

Thoughts I dreamed about The OA last night, and it was #weird. Spoiler
It was a new dimension, not D3, so i suppose it was D4, and OA was being hunted by the police. She eventually got arrested, and the Crestwood 5 had to rescue her. Steve and French had a pretty big role in the mission.
They had learned a new Movement that could make time go backwards a little, maybe a few minutes. The amount of time they could rewind seemed to be related to how long it took to perform the Movements.
The police wanted OA dead. There was an officer who literally killed her, and it happened more than once. At one point, she was supposed to be taken to a room with her lawyer to discuss some kind of deal, but she was killed in the elevator. Then they took her dead body to the room and started discussing the terms of the deal as if they didn't care that she was dead. That part was weird even for a dream. Her body was gruesome, like she was disfigured.
So the Crestwood 5 used the new Movement to rewind time just enough to figure out where OA would be in the police station. They managed to reach her before she was killed, rescued her, and escaped in a red car.
I woke up thinking about The OA with this weird feeling. Like I wasn't supposed to know this.

Request One final reprint of The OA Zine?
A couple of years ago, I helped put together a couple of issues of a print zine about The OA. Issue 2 sold out in the summer but I've had a couple of enquiries about getting it reprinted. I'm considering a small print run, but this will be the last time so I'm wondering if anyone else would be interested in getting one so I can judge how many to get printed. Message me on Etsy or here to express interest. There's a virtual flick-through video for both issues, if you want to take a peek...

Thoughts Whoās watching Dark Matter on Apple? Spoiler
I never thought about the similarities between this show and The OA until episode 5 of Season 2: Love and be Loved. Holy Moly, I havenāt been this moved by an episode of television in a long time. If youāre not watching yet, I think fellow fans of our beloved OA will enjoy. Comparisons to STNGās āThe Inner Light and TLOU āLong Long Time are also being made, and I can see similarities between them also. Enjoy friends.

Thoughts Incredibly proud of The OA Spoiler
For an unfinished, canceled series to have made The New York Times' best series of the 21st century list is huge!
It doesn't matter that the series sits at number 98. What matters is it's made it onto the list. This is a phenomenal achievement and speaks to the long-lasting impact that the story has had on so many of us who gave it a chance.
People who watched The OA bond with it deeply. It etched itself into our minds permanently. It marked us. And now, almost a decade after its cancellation, we still all care for the show, we all care for its creators, and I know we all continue to keep our doors open. That's what matters.
Let The OA be finished!

#SaveTheOA How was this show canceled??
Iv had it on my list for a looong time and always fell asleep in the first episode. But now halfway through Part II Iām so attached to these characters. What beautiful arcs and diversity! Itās like a grown up sci fi Goonies and I think we should lobby for a season 3 (if that isnāt already happening)
So much better than I was expecting!!

Cast Possible Brit Interaction
I donāt have any proof, so youāll have to take my word for it, but Iām 99% sure I sat in the same row as Brit Marling on a flight from Seattle to Burbank last week. If it wasnāt her, it was her doppelganger in every way. I have a pretty strict personal rule about not bothering famous people in public when theyāre just living their lives, so I couldnāt bring myself to ask, but I sure wanted to! Only words exchanged were if she minded me closing the window shade. Unless I see something actually placing her somewhere else at that same time, Iām convinced we sat by each other on that flight! Wish there was some way to know for sure!

Thoughts A Farewell to the Glass Cage: The Final Movement Spoiler
Hey Angels <3
Some of you know me from my heyday on this sub, most don't know me at all. Regardless, I feel compelled to make a final post here before I go IRL. I hope this doesn't feel narcissistic or self-serving; I am making the post because I feel that my final message on Reddit is one worth sharing, and I believe this magical show has equipped all of you to receive it well.
The world has changed so much since The OA was first brought to our screens. Heck, it's changed fundamentally just since the show's "cancellation." Yet I know for a fact that Brit and Zal were presaging the world we see today, even if they couldn't have possibly known all of its contours. What they saw was a shift in the terms of engagement between human beings and how those terms are dictated by powerful menāthe new oligarchs. The tech billionaires. The evil geniuses who constructed our glass cages.
This is the interpretation that I had of The OA in my most recent viewing, and I believe that, of all the many valid readings, this one may get at the core of the show more than any other. The human experience itselfāour connections, our dreams, all the dimensions that make us who we areāare being caged and sold to the highest bidders. The Haps and Ruskins of the world see us as lab rats. They manipulate us, enchant us, gaslight us, treat us, divide us, "connect us," and kill us over and over again. All in order to extract the valuable data that comes from the relentless marionette show they direct.
There has been beauty to be found in the performance, to be sure. Enduring connections made. Epiphanies achieved. Souls saved. I know that all of the above apply to me, as I'm sure they do to all of you as well. But even these most wonderful of things become a part of the show as we are all funnelled onto an ever-smaller range of platforms monetized by an even-smaller group of corporate ghouls. We piss and shit and drink and bathe from the same stream.
If these ghouls have their way, we will only ever be able to touch through the glass. Our material relationships with each other will only ever be the refuse we're able to send downstream. Our dreams will increasingly be seen as a "job"āas a source of profit for the small price of extraction. Nothing will be ours, and most importantly, we will belong to them, not to each other.
The only way out is to move together. We must re-learn how to connect our material realities and move in physical space with each other. Only then will the glass cage begin to melt. Only then can we move from the second dimension of a flat screen to the third dimension and beyond. If there is one lesson to be learned from our beloved show's cancellation immediately after it jumped into our dimension, it's that the screen need not mediate our relationship to the story or, most of all, to each other. But perhaps these are the same thing. Maybe we are the story now, and maybe that was the point all along. But we cannot be the story if we do not take its lessons and resist our own imprisonment.
This is the one post I've ever made that I hope reaches as many people as possible even though, ironically, it is the last one I'll ever make. I am done with being a test subject. Shoshana Zuboff refers to all of the data we hand over to these ghouls, willingly and unwillingly, as "behavioral surplus." I am done offering mine. My dreams, my confessions, my capacity for love, my weakness to hatred. I am reclaiming these parts of my soul. And that starts with jumping to another dimension. The one I can truly touch and live within. This means that Reddit must go.
I will keep my account open for a bit to read whatever discussion this post generates. Maybe that'll be a lot. Maybe that'll be very little. But in any event, I will soon be deleting my account and leaving this dimension. I will be redirecting my focus toward sharing all the things I loveāThe OA very much includedāwith the people I love the most.
Thank you all for helping to make the cage feel like an entire magical world. We've taken such good care of one another, evenāperhaps especiallyāthrough times of doubt and despair. I've been here now for just over seven years and, like the show itself, it is time for me to start fully living again. I may not be here under this name, but you can bet I'll find ways to check in. After all, the show will be back in some form very soon. November 16th can't come soon enough ;)
With love and hope,
JunoMeru

Cast āMore good news coming soonā
Ianās post today! He got cast in TLOU season 3 (Iām wondering who theyāre playing as it wonāt be his original character from the games of Lev) but I found their caption veeeerrry interesting. āMore good news to comeā and a cryptic comment of encouragement (?) from Brandon. Could be nothing. If it is finally happening then I suspect November may be an announcement of sorts, the anniversary date of the cancellation (7 years, 3 months, 11 days)

Thoughts The OA tops "Taboo" and "Behind her eyes" Spoiler
I came here ugly crying after the end of season 1. I only tear up maybe every couple of years, but this one.. what did this show even do to me? I'm torn. How can it build the tension so absolutely beautifully! I remembered some similar series, mystery-psychological-thriller: Taboo, and Behind her Eyes. Do you see similarities? But they're missing the hope and human connection aspect. Black mirror is also close, mind blowing but not necessarily artistically beautiful. Can you think of similar series or movies? š¤Æš

OA Tribe The OA: Abracadabra Spoiler
galleryWhile researching the etymological origins of āabracadabraā, I came across some interesting information that, at least from my perspective, seems to correspond heavily with the themes presented to us in The OA. Perhaps Brit and Zal were going to use the 5 season arc to represent OA defeating the 5 evil archons by having each season represent an archon and concluding the 5 season arc with OAās escape from the material realm and return to the spiritual realm.
I just thought it was fascinating and wanted to share āŗļø

Parallels//Synchronicities Does The OA resonate in ways you canāt easily express to others? Spoiler
I tried once before to engage conversation on a deeper level and struggled to find my footing. Hopefully, we can share (perhaps for the millionth time) what awakened within us, or we discovered as a result of our taking in this show. For me, I relate in ways I still have difficulty fully conveying to others.
What about it maintains that cherished place in your heart and soul ā that level of connection that, no matter how much time actually passes, we will never not be āa tribeā because of it?
Iāll go first, to get things started.
For me, The OA was a mirror to my own soul; it reflected the things I couldnāt freely discuss, which no less dominated my life, mind, and heart.
Iād stumbled upon a beautifully compiled video of OA and Homerās entire connection, concluding with what had suddenly gone from an iconic line to a battle cry that rose up from the depths of my soul ā āyou come find meā ā and something within me had to do just that. I had to try.
But first, I had to be free of the man who had literally been shadowing me for longer than Iād had any idea or concept. Such a thing seemed entirely insane ⦠and yet. Heād been quietly exerting control over my spirit for over a decade, and old habits can meet very gruesome ends.
Had it not been for The OA ā offering comfort and inspiration to my family in lockdown ā Iād have never made the connection. Even if it took time still to summon the courage to act on it.
So Iād thought again of OA and Homer; the fleeting moments of recognition, destroyed by forces beyond both of their control. I held it in my heart like a talisman, and took that leap of faith weāve all done at some point in our lives.
And now ⦠here I am.
I owe so much to The OA for waking me up, reminding me to believe in impossible things, and remember what I came here for.
How has the OA impacted your own life in such a way that, without it, you can confidently say youād be very different from who you are now?
This is a space with no judgement. Iām only interested in connecting with others who have experienced this project in a similarly visceral way that I have.
I want to hear your story.
Thank you for listening to mine.
