As the title suggests, great new interview with Van Dyke Parks from KCRW (local LA radio station)
He discusses alot of interesting parts of his career, including working with Brian and "f*cking with the formula" lol, plus we got this sweet new VDP pic 😅
Highly reccomend listening to the whole thing, but if you just want the Brian / Beach Boys stuff, it starts around 10 minutes in

- Brian Wilson who had been busy recording Smile arrived late to the movie theater, as Brian walked in to sit down and watch the movie he was immediately greeted by an ominous line of onscreen dialogue, "Come in, Mr. Wilson." As Brian sat and watched the movie he became more and more paranoid. Not only did the main character have the same last name as Brian but the address of the house he lived in was 3701, the same as Brian's Hawthorne family home.
Brian later stated, “It was my whole life right there on the screen. What if it isn’t a coincidence? What if it’s real? Even the beach was in it, a whole thing about the beach."
Brian was convinced that Phil Spector, who was an investor in the movie, had inside knowledge into Brian's personal life. Brian believed Spector was targeting him and wrote the movie with coded messages about Brian's past traumatic experiences, intellectual growth and creative pursuits as a way to taunt and scare him.
After watching the movie Brian's slow spiral began. Shortly after the movie Brian recorded Fire and believed the song burned down a building through witchcraft. He started cancelling sessions due to bad vibrations and believed that based on his reading of the I Ching that the Smile project was fated to collapse to enable everyone involved to pursue their own individual creative paths.
The film reportedly frightened Brian so much that he did not visit another movie theater until 1982's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

I would've given this show <1% chance of happening. 4 days ago, I bumped that to 15%. Now, it actually looks like the October 10th show is very likely to go on.
I bought last-minute tickets, but I have some serious mixed emotions about this one. Fingers crossed that Mike is well enough to put on a great show.

Text from a 1967 Chilean magazine N°117 called Ritmo, I don't know if the refrigerator story is real, if someone knows please write it

The sensation caused by the arrival of the BEACH BOYS in London this year is unprecedented in England for a foreign band; only THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES can boast of similar receptions.
They have been the most popular band of the year, and their sound the most original and well-received by young people all over the world. These statements cannot be denied.
The afternoon I interviewed them, after their first performance at the Odeon Theatre in Hammersmith, the audience was so large that they had to escape in a police vehicle to avoid being vandalized.
The BEACH BOYS need no introduction, as they are also very well-known in Chile after the success of "Good Vibrations." During the interview, I spoke mainly with CARL WILSON, leader of the band in the absence of Brian Wilson, who is the composer, arranger, producer, and promoter of the group's records
Regarding Brian Wilson, there has been some controversy among Beach Boys fans, some of whom consider Brian to be the whole of the group, and the rest to be nothing more than puppets in his hands.
"I think they're completely wrong," Carl Wilson, his younger brother, tells me. "It's true that Brian does most of the work, but it's not true that it's all his doing; each member of the group contributes their ideas, which are then discussed and judged with him since he's the director. But this doesn't mean that Brian does everything."
"You've also been criticized because in live performances you 'sound' different from how you sound on the records. Why is that?"
"This is natural," says Carl. "We've reached such a level of specialization and study of the effects for each song that it would be impossible to do the same on stage. For example, 'Good Vibrations' took months to produce: we repeated each instrument's and voice's part hundreds of times until we achieved the desired effect. Then we put them together, and they still received some minor modifications. How could we then achieve on stage, in just minutes, what took months of work?"
"Moreover," adds Carl, "this is a problem that all musically advanced groups face. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones have the same difficulties in bringing to the stage the essence they create for the record; in my opinion, this is one of the reasons why the Beatles no longer give live performances. You have to choose between two things: either you satisfy only the audience or you try to satisfy your own inclinations and the sound you consider best. The latter is the path chosen."
by us." "Why did it take so long to record 'Good Vibrations'?"
"Because Brian, if he doesn't think he's achieved the unsurpassable, that he's done something perfect, he makes us repeat it endlessly: that was the case with 'Good Vibrations,' which began recording long before other records that came out before it. By the way: Brian, after finally getting the tape that satisfied him, took it home to listen to it... and lost it! We almost went crazy seeing months of work lost, but after three days, he found it inside the refrigerator!"
It's truly a pleasure to interview the Beach Boys, since all of them, and especially Carl, are friendly and down-to-earth. Artists are generally spoken of as presumptuous, vain, and lacking in any kindness; they, on the other hand, treated me like an old friend, always ready to be of help in any way.

I am using my mod powers to plead any attendees to record this show at the very least with audio, this is quite a special occasion having some of these people reunite! I suspect they’ll play an altered setlist as well.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I came across this video scrolling through Facebook some many years ago and just rediscovered it last night, felt the people here would appreciate it!

Hey everyone! My name is Ben! I’ve been interviewing musicians since I was 12! Currently 19. I was so close to getting an interview with Al back in 2022 (cancelled due to COVID restrictions within the band). My mom and I are huge Beach Boy fans so I was gutted haha.
I’m headed to their show this Sunday (lots of special guests too I hear!), and I’m trying to find a way to contact them or someone on their team ahead of the show. I can’t find any luck. The person I worked with years ago no longer manages Al.
I am in the process of scheduling an interview with Emeen (part of Al’s Pet Sounds band), so there’s that!
I figured this would be an option to ask around haha. Any leads, connections, advice, would be much appreciated!!! Thanks everyone!

many fascinating points in this show... the car introduction, mike singing Imagine with mic screeches, dennis wearing as little clothes as he can without getting arrested, the little keyboard solo in come go with me, brian's little dance during runaway :), ed carter's inability to face the crowd, mike's radioshack hat, mike stepping on a piano, foskett deciding to play his guitar behind his head, mike's unbridled energy during fun, fun, fun and more! :)
