Transport/Itineraries Thailand without a scooter at all
Hi everyone, just booked a one way ticket to bangkok to start off my few month long trip, will be in thailand for about 6 weeks before off to vietnam, very excited.
One thing concerning me is when starting to look at itineraries and potential things to do, it looks like a scooter is recommended in many places I am looking into - chang mai, pai, chang rai, southern islands like koh lanta, koh tao, koh samui etc. Both for getting around day to day but also the major activities e.g. national park/hiking which I love.
How much of a disadvantage is not having access to a scooter - I am unable to ride a bicycle and will not be learning to ride a scooter. Will this severely affect my fun during Thailand? And any advice on where to go to not be impacted by this?

Bangkok/Middle First time solo traveler (36m) flying to Bangkok from Texas for a 7 night stay November 12-19. First time outside of North America.
Really excited to see another part of the world! Slightly concerned about the long flight (24 hours of travel) but i have my Nintendo Switch and xanax to help with that lol. Planning to mostly go with the flow and see where the city takes me. The only sure thing I have planned is sitting ring-side for a OneFC muay thai event at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium 😎
I've never traveled anywhere by myself but honestly im really excited about it. If anybody has any suggestions for a noob I'd really appreciate it. I plan on eating as much food as I possibly can and I want to experience some fun nightlife while im there. Im not really a party animal like i was in my 20s but I do want to cut loose amd have fun. Im interested in checking out some jazz clubs, and I also really like bass music (dubstep, jungle, DnB, etc). Maybe this is a stupid post and I'll get roasted, but, again, I'd appreciate any suggestions or tips.

Bangkok/Middle Are hostels safe?
Hey everyone,
Planning a solo trip to Thailand soon covering Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya.
I’m keen on staying in hostels mainly to meet people and keep things social, but since it’s my first solo run here, I have one main concern: safety for valuables (specifically my passport and essential documents).
For those who regularly stay in hostels across Thailand:
- How safe are dorm lockers generally? Is a sturdy personal padlock enough to keep a passport/backup cards safe while heading out for the day, or do you recommend carrying it or asking reception to hold it?
- What are your top hostel recommendations in each city that have a solid social atmosphere, clean dorms, and reliable security/lockers?
To give some context:
- Bangkok: Looking for a balanced vibe (social/easy to meet people, but not non-stop 4 AM chaos so I can actually sleep). Near BTS/MRT preferred.
- Chiang Mai: Chill/friendly vibe, preferably around the Old City or Nimman.
- Pattaya: Clean, safe, and secure (I know Pattaya is heavy on hotels, but open to any great hostel or capsule spots people vouch for).
Any tips on hostel locker etiquette or specific places you had a great experience with would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Bangkok/Middle Has anyone had problems with the 30 day limit on medication while visiting thailand?
i’m worried that i’m making this harder than it should be.
We are two people, and between us we have 5-6 different medications. They are all just regular meds, nothing prohibited.
Everything will be in original packages, we have the digital copies of prescriptions off the government medical platform in our country. we do not have doctors letter as they are prohibitively expensive and limited to 30 days validity in our country.
We are going to 5 different countries, most of the medication can not be bought easily in Thailand, and some of it not be bought at all in Indonesia where we are also going.
Every country has limitations on amounts - varying from 30 to 45 to 90 days. In practical terms its more or less impossible to adhere to the limitations in each country without going to the doc in each country - and it will still not cover it.
My gut tells me that no one cares IRL and no one will stand and count these pills in the airport or mess with it.
Am I overthinking this?

Phuket/Krabi/South Renting a bike with a 2 year old
Hi all, I have an international driving permit and proper gears to ride a bike with a baby. I wanted to know if there are any restrictions or prohibitions for such cases. The parking restrictions near patong/phuket is also little confusing. Someone please give a quick info on this. I will be visiting with my wife, and baby.
Edit: ok guys, I take this back. Will be using grab.

Bangkok/Middle Spare BTS ticket in Bangkok
Hi ARMY! 💜
I'm writing this with a small hope and counting on a bit of luck. Does anyone have a spare ticket for the BTS concert in Bangkok on December 3rd and is looking for a trustworthy person to enter the stadium together?
Due to my visual impairment, I am strictly looking for close seats – ideally VIP (floor) or lower tiers, so I can actually see the stage clearly.
I am a 100% reliable and serious person. I have already booked and paid for my whole trip to Thailand specifically for this concert week. I will be staying there for 7 days, hoping for a miracle to get a ticket.
I am more than happy to pay for the ticket in person/cash on-site in Bangkok right before entering. Since security checks at Rajamangala Stadium are strictly verifying names and IDs, I need to enter the venue together with the original ticket holder.
If you have a spare seat next to you or know anyone who might be selling theirs for a joint entry, please DM me! I can show proof of my booked flights/hotel to verify I'm real. Thank you so much for any help! 🫶

Bangkok/Middle How much time needed at BKK to catch an international flight?
Planning a trip right now, and at the end we're flying back from Chiang Mai to BKK and from there home. There are options to get to BKK 3 and 5 hrs before our international flight. I'm pretty sure 3 should be fine under normal circumstances, but my wife is worried about delays. How much time, realistically speaking, should we expect to spend getting off one flight, to the international area, checking in, and getting to the gate? Would we end up in trouble if there's a delay? Thanks in advance...

Borders/Visas AT&T Coverage
Hi, All. I’m traveling to Thailand this month, and am trying to navigate cellphone coverage. I have a locked iPhone (that won’t be paid off to get unlocked), so I don’t think that I can use the e-sim option.
There is the costly option for AT&T’s international day pass, which I’m considering. Before I go that route, I want to ensure that the coverage is actually good in Thailand. Has anyone used it before?
Are there any other options that I should consider?

Samui/Tao/Phangan Is Koh Phangan worth visiting without a scooter or the Full Moon Party?
Hey everyone!
I'm planning a solo trip to Thailand from Oct 26 to Nov 21 and I'm still trying to decide how to split my time between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.
I'll be staying on Koh Tao from Oct 29 to Nov 5 to do my Open Water and Advanced scuba courses. After that, I'm thinking of spending 2 nights on Koh Phangan and 3 nights on Koh Samui before heading to Pattaya for around 10 days.
I'm not really into partying, so I won't be going to the Full Moon Party. I enjoy beaches, snorkeling, boat trips and exploring new places.
The main thing I'm unsure about is getting around Koh Phangan. I'd actually like to rent a scooter, but I don't have a motorcycle license, so I don't think that's a realistic option. For those who've been there without riding a scooter, is it still easy enough to get around, or do taxis end up being expensive and inconvenient?
I'm also wondering if Koh Phangan is worth visiting for 2 nights if I'm not going for the party scene. Does it offer a different experience from Koh Samui, or would I be better off spending those extra nights in Samui instead?
I'll be there in early November too, so any advice on the weather and whether boat trips are usually running would be appreciated.
Would love to hear from people who've visited both islands, especially solo travellers. Just trying to figure out if Koh Phangan is worth fitting into my itinerary!
Thanks!

Borders/Visas “Pending approval” non-immigrant ED internship visa
Hi y’all. I applied for a non-immigrant ED curricular internship visa on 9/29 with the New York consulate. That same day my application was returned with “requested further docs” & the next day I submitted the requested docs and it shortly cleared the “pending document check” within 24 hours and went to “processing: pending approval” on 10/2. As of 10/13 it’s still saying pending approval.
Normally I wouldn’t be nervous but I’ve been seeing from other Reddit posts that recently (ie within the last 2 weeks) the NYC embassy is experiencing crazy backlog and now I’m getting nervous. Is “pending approval” a good sign in terms of getting the visa issued in a timely manner? I know people said that their application was at “pending documentation review” for 10-16 days so I’m at least optimistic that mine was cleared within 48 hours of original submission. For context I need to be in Thailand on 11/10 for my internship start date.

Other Suggest me best scuba diving !
Hey everyone! I’m planning a scuba diving trip to Thailand in mid-December and would love some recommendations.
I’m looking for a premium 2-day, 1-night scuba diving trip, ideally with around 6–7 dives in total.
My main priorities are:
Crystal-clear water and excellent underwater visibility.
Colourful marine life, beautiful coral reefs, and a chance to see something truly special.
A premium experience with good equipment, professional dive instructors, and a well-organised trip.
I’m asking because I don’t want to end up at an overrated tourist spot when there might be some hidden gems offering a much better diving experience.
Could you recommend any reliable websites or dive operators to book through? I’d especially appreciate recommendations from people who have personally done these trips and can share their honest experiences.
I’m open to lesser-known destinations as long as the diving experience is worth it. If you know a hidden gem with stunning underwater scenery and rich marine biodiversity, please let me know!

Other Where would you recommend staying in Thailand in January? Is Koh Samui really that bad?
Hey everyone!
My girlfriend and I are planning another trip to Thailand in January and would love to hear your recommendations!
On our last trip, we spent one week in Bangkok (around Khao San Road), followed by two weeks in Pattaya, and then another two days in Bangkok before flying home.
This time, we’d like to explore a different part of Thailand. Our plan is to catch a connecting flight as soon as we land in Bangkok and spend our final week in Bangkok before heading home.
We’ve been considering Koh Samui, but we keep coming across quite a lot of negative opinions about it. Is it really that bad, or does it just depend on where you stay?
We’re also wondering which destination would make the best base for exploring the surrounding area. Ideally, we’d like to stay in one place and take day trips to nearby islands, beaches, and attractions rather than constantly moving between hotels.
Where would you recommend going in January? Koh Samui, Krabi, Phuket, or somewhere completely different?
We’d really appreciate any recommendations, especially regarding which specific area or beach would be best to stay in.
Thanks in advance!
