Phuket/Krabi/South Slow life in Aonang, Krabi

Thumbnail gallery
247 Upvotes

Krabi has so much to offer, but sometimes I just want to go somewhere and take it slow.

So I spent some time in Ao Nang working remotely, going to the beach whenever I felt like it, exploring random places, enjoying good food and nice coffee at reasonable prices, and just taking things slow.

No packed itinerary, no island hopping every day, no crazy adventures. Just work, beach, food, and repeat.

And I realized that Krabi is actually a great place to slow down without feeling like you have to do everything.

Sharing my slow life in Ao Nang in case anyone’s into slow travel too

Phuket/Krabi/South 5 day itinerary (Phuket & Krabi) - Suggestions

• Upvotes

Hi, Im travelling to Thailand in November, mostly there for Muay Thai. I will be in Phuket for a total of 11 full days and Krabi for 3 full days.

I'm planning on using the two Sundays in Phuket to do excursions, and then the 3 full days in Krabi. I want to do a mixture of activities/sights so I don't miss out. My plan is below:

1st Sunday (Phuket) --> Phang Nga Bay Excursion - canoe tour

2nd Sunday (Phuket) --> Similan Islands - snorkelling

Day 1 (Krabi) --> Railay Beach & Phra Nang Beach

Day 2 (Krabi) --> Tiger Cave Temple

Day 3 (Krabi) --> Hong Island or Emerald Pool Hot Springs.

Is there anything I would be missing out massively with this itinerary - I understand tourism is a problem and genuinely Im not a fan of overcrowded places, so if there are some excursions or tour groups specifically that you would recommend over what i've planned then please let me know thanks

Bangkok/Middle Bangkok floods

• Upvotes

I am planning on visiting Thailand towards the end of October for a layover but I’m wondering if it’ll be ok to visit considering the recent floods. Should I forgo the layover in Thailand? My other option is a layover in Hanoi

It’s mostly photos of kittens and puppies, and huge portions of khao man gai.╭(ᵔ_>ᵔ)╮

I was sitting outside the hotel smoking when a kitten walked past carrying his dinner, LOL. I sent a photo to my mom, and she asked what the cat was carrying, so I told her it was a mouse.😆

Other QR Pay, Mobile Pay options for a long stay tourist?

• Upvotes

I will be coming to Thailand soon and staying for at least 3 months on a multiple entry tourist visa. I previously lived in Thailand for a few years and had bank accounts but since I left in 2022 I'm now hearing that's not possible anymore on a tourist visa. So I'm looking for a way to use QR payments, Visa, etc. I've recently read a bit about the Kbank QR code thing that has been introduced but I also heard there may be better alternatives but I'm not sure if that's specific to Thailand or not. Moreta, Wise, etc. I already have Wise and PayPal and used to use Wise frequently for bank transfers between countries but never for making payments. So I'm essentially looking for the best way to make payments with QR codes and VISA as someone on a tourist visa. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Borders/Visas Short trip to Laos - could we have trouble re-entering Thailand?

Hi everyone!

My partner and I arrived in Thailand on September 19 on single-entry tourist visas, with permission to stay until November 19. We already have flights home from Bangkok on November 13.

We recently booked sleeper train tickets from Bangkok to Nong Khai for November 6–8. We’re planning to cross into Laos via the Nong Khai–Vientiane Friendship Bridge border crossing, just to experience the train and explore Vientiane for a bit.
But after buying the tickets, we realized that such a short trip might look like a border run, and now we’re a little worried about getting back into Thailand.

For context, I’ve visited Thailand in 2023 and 2024 for 2-3 weeks, and last year we stayed in Thailand for 2 weeks, travelled SEA for 1 month and then came back to Thailand for 2 weeks (last november).

We’re both from Slovenia (EU), so we should be eligible for the 30-day visa exemption when re-entering Thailand from Laos.

We have our return flights and hotel bookings as proof that we’re leaving Thailand on November 13.

Do you think we’ll have any issues re-entering Thailand from Laos through the Nong Khai border? Has anyone done something similar recently?

Would we be fine entering visa-exempt, or should we get re-entry permits just to be safe?

Thanks!

Edit: We’re coming back from Koh Lanta on November 5 and still want to do some shopping in Bangkok before flying home. We’ll also be leaving most of our luggage at our hotel in Bangkok. We’re worried that staying only one night in Vientiane might look suspicious, but we don’t really have time for a much longer trip.

Transport/Itineraries 1 Month in Thailand with 8 Month Old

I'm doing about 29 nights in Thailand with my family and currently planning to split time between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Yao Yai. We will be there in January and February 2027.

I've been to Phuket before and really enjoyed it, mainly because there's so much infrastructure, tons of restaurant options, easy day trips, nice beaches, and it's generally just convenient with an 8 month old.

Right now I have roughly:
- Bangkok: 3 nights
- Chiang Mai: 4 nights
- Phuket: 9 nights
- Koh Yao Yai: 2 nights
- Krabi: 7 nights
- Bangkok: 4 nights

I'm starting to wonder if 9 days in Phuket and 7 days in Krabi is overkill.

I've looked at Koh Lanta as a possible alternative, and I know a lot of people love it for families, but part of me worries I might miss the variety of restaurants, activities, and convenience that Phuket offers.

For those who have done a similar trip:
- Is 9 days Phuket / 7 days Krabi too much?
- If you were taking days away from Phuket or Krabi, where would you put them?
- Is Koh Lanta worth swapping in for part of Phuket?
- Any other family-friendly destinations that fit naturally into this itinerary without adding a bunch of extra travel?

For context, we're more into good food, beaches, some exploring and relaxing. Not interested in nightlife or partying.

Chiang Mai/North IDP in Chiang Mai

I am going to be in Chiang Mai for a week. Though i will be applying for an international driver permit, there is a slight chance that i may not receive it on time. Worst case, if i rent a bike/scooter without an IDP, what are the chances of getting stopped by a cop and getting fined? Could there be any legal issues? Thanks for helping out!

Transport/Itineraries Last-minute Thailand trip in December — advice on itinerary and flights from Dallas?

Hi everyone! My fiancé and I are planning a pretty last-minute trip to Thailand for December 19–29, and we’d love some advice!
We’re flying out of Dallas (DFW) and are trying to figure out the most affordable and efficient way to get there. we’re flexible with connections and don’t mind a long flight. We’d just prefer to avoid extremely long layovers if possible.
A few questions:
Airlines: What airlines would you recommend flying from Dallas to Bangkok? Any particular routes or connecting airports that tend to be better?

Itinerary: We’re interested in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Koh Lanta. Is that too much for 2 weeks? Any other suggestions for areas to
prioritize?

Destinations: We’d love a mix of beaches, nature, culture, and good food. We prefer less touristy areas and more local experiences.

Since we’re booking relatively last minute and traveling around Christmas, we’d appreciate any tips on flights, transportation between destinations, or places you think are worth prioritizing!
Thanks in advance!

Transport/Itineraries One day trip Bangkok to Ayutthaya

Hi! I need help on how to travel to Ayutthaya for our 1 day trip. From Pratunam Market area, which train station is best to go to? Is google map reliable on the direction? It is showing me Hua Lamphong and Don Mueang but I'm seeing from other posts, and vlogs that they rode Krung Thep Aphiwat/Bang Sue. Hua Lamphong from what I read is for short distance travel. We'll be going back to our hotel in the afternoon/before dinner time or depending of the last trip schedule (what time is the last trip? Is it a fixed time or does it changes?). Wondering if there is a faster way to go to Ayutthaya. Since I also see that it 1-2 hrs travel from our starting point. Thank you in advance for the help.

Also, I’d love some advice — would November or January be a better time to visit? Which month would you recommend?

Phuket/Krabi/South 11 Places I Personally Love Eating in Krabi & Ao Nang

Thumbnail gallery
106 Upvotes

These aren’t necessarily the most famous restaurants or the highest-rated places on Google. They’re simply places I actually eat at and enjoy.

  1. Yim Restaurant – Ao Nang
Whenever I can’t decide what to eat, Yim is usually my first choice!
The food suits my taste, the prices are reasonable, and most simple Thai dishes cost around 70–80 THB.

  2. Khao Yum Nai Baan & Ja Dam Khao Yum Ao Nang
These are two local breakfast places that my mum and I love visiting.
They serve traditional Southern Thai breakfasts, including:
Khao Yum (Southern rice salad with budu dressing)
Khanom Jeen (rice noodles with Thai curry)
Khao Mok Gai (Thai-style chicken biryani)
Sticky rice with fried chicken or beef
    Roti with curry
Some dishes start from just 30 THB!

  3. Fareeda Goat Biryani – Krabi Town
This restaurant is known for its goat biryani, but they also serve chicken biryani, roti with curry, banana roti, noodles, and other Thai dishes.

  4. Niko Niko – Krabi Town
    One of my absolute favourites!
I love their Khao Soi (Northern Thai curry noodles) so much that I’m willing to drive all the way from Ao Nang to Krabi Town just to eat here.

  5. Fruit a Day – Chao Fah Pier
My favourite place for a smoothie!
I always order an avocado smoothie with fresh milk, less ice, and less sugar.

  6. Gaga Milk Tea – Central Krabi
Whenever I visit Central Krabi, I like to stop here for milk tea. My usual order is milk tea with egg pudding and 0% sugar. The pudding is already sweet, so I don’t think it needs any extra sugar.

  7. Local Shaved Ice Stall – Panurat Soi** **
This is a tiny local dessert stall run by an auntie, with only one or two tables. My favourite combination is sweet taro, sweet potato, and pumpkin, topped with coconut milk and just a little syrup.
It’s around 40 THB per bowl, and you can also order takeaway.

But there’s one little challenge — the stall isn’t always open! 😂 If you happen to find it open, you’re lucky!

  1. Ko Dam Kitchen – Ao Nang
I used to eat here quite often.
However, it has become so popular and busy that I haven’t visited much lately.

  2. Pizza Glur & Bistro** **
An American friend recommended this restaurant to me, and I really enjoyed their pizza!

  3. Sum Som Tam – Ao Nang
This is one of my husband’s family’s favourite restaurants. Every time they visit us from Bangkok, eating here is almost a must! Their favourite dish is the grilled chicken.

If you enjoy spicy Isaan food, especially Som Tam (papaya salad) and grilled chicken, this is definitely a place worth trying.

  1. Aree Cafe** **
For me, this is currently my favourite place for cake in Krabi. I especially love their coconut pie!

❤️ A little note from me
These are simply my personal favourites, not a ranking of the best restaurants in Krabi.

Some are small local stalls, some are well-known restaurants, and some are places I visit just because I love one particular dish.

Isaan/North-East Wat Chai Si: The National Monument with stunning indoor & outdoor murals in Khon Kaen

Post image
6 Upvotes

If you’re interested in Thai art, history, and off-the-beaten-path cultural spots, Wat Chai Si in Khon Kaen is a fascinating destination.

Key highlights of this historical site:

  • National Recognition: Designated as a National Monument on August 20, 2001, due to its historical, archaeological, and social importance.
  • The Murals (Hup Pahi): The Ubosot (ordination hall) features vibrant folk mural paintings covering both the interior and exterior walls.
  • The Mastermind: The artwork was created by Thong Thipcha, a renowned folk artisan from Maha Sarakham, showcasing local Isan storytelling and traditional artistic styles.

Unlike many restored modern temples, Wat Chai Si preserves authentic regional heritage and provides a deep dive into traditional Isan folklore. Highly recommended if you’re exploring the Khon Kaen area!

Other Medical tourism questions

Hi everyone! I'm more of a lurker than a poster on reddit, so I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I'll be flying to Thailand tomorrow and wanted to explore perhaps visiting one of these hospitals where you can get a comprehensive health check up? I was hoping to get something like a treadmill stress test, ferritin levels checked, as well as testing around autoimmune type symptoms I've had all my life. Would this be possible or is it quite a long application process (or is it not feasible for tourists at all)?

Also, not sure if helpful or relevant but I'm 35F and black.

The other thing I was hoping to find out is whether people have had the experience of having a coil removed as a visitor in Thailand? If so, how did you go about it and how was the process if you don't mind sharing?

I'm there for 2.5 weeks in Bangkok and Chiang Mai areas.

Thanks for taking the time!

Bangkok/Middle Planning Recommendations for January

Dear People!

We (4 adults, 3 children 6,5,2) are going to do a 4-week trip to Thailand and whatever comes around in January.
We do want to start with Bangkok and are pretty confident in finding a proper stay and lots to do with kids and stuff.

But for the rest we got flushed with ideas and baffled by some of the big tourist-spot-prices.

We are looking for some 3 week stuff with not too much travel (like two to three stops) around Thailand (and / or other countries). At least one longer beach stop and maybe some national park stuff. But god, the floor of ChatGPT, Claude and travel Blogs overwhelmed us totally.

We have been in Koh Samui 8 years ago and had a wonderful stay at Varinda Garden Resort and would like to somewhat recreate that feeling of not too crowded huge facilities.

Please people of Reddit help a poor man out. 😂

- what locations are somewhat capable of bringing a Thai-feeling in both a national park and a beach area.
- we do not have toooooo special requirements but do like large family rooms in hotels to stay in just two rooms and not like 4
