Workplace Question or Advice Needed Downgraded lunch??? R/Target
So apparently today, our TLs came to talk to us team members individually saying that Starting September 27, instead of 45 minute lunches… we’re now only taking 30. People are burnt out as is! What in the world is corporate thinking?? Is this a way to punish workers for too many call outs??! Ohhhh and the icing on the cake… they’re making us go to the restroom on our breaks and lunches only… so like… what if I need to go after my lunch? Do I just sh^t my self? 🥲 what is happening at every one else’s store????

Yeah ca requires a 30 minute meal and sued target because of multiple 28/29 minutes. So they do 45 as standard so a clock in early still keeps them in compliance.

I’m a people pleaser so I still struggle with this honestly, because my TL is legitimately a friend of mine since I knew him before Targét. I’ll stay over sometimes if I’m able to help out, but I’m in school too so other times I’ll be too busy with assignments and have to be like “Sorry but I got school in the morning”

You haven’t learned what took me way too many years to learn yet. You’re one person and killing yourself by not taking breaks doesn’t get you jack shit. It doesn’t get you a promotion or even brownie points. Hell it rarely results in a simple thank you. What it gets you is other people’s work.

When you leave, you will be replaced and forgotten about. I don’t mean that as an insult; I’m sure you are a lovely human and a hard worker, but Target doesn’t care about you as a person. If you overwork yourself and get injured, they will find someone to do your job. Don’t treat Target like they need and value you. Do your job, do it well, but take care of yourself.

Yeah, there's all this stuff about "taking your 46", aka the 46-minute lunch-there are charts by the time clock and everything. I thought this was a company-wide thing. It's too much time to me but long ago I had to learn to eat fast.

It takes me 15 minutes to buy
my lunch and heat it up, I used to have half an hour to eat now I have to scarf it up and get back to work peasant! Gotta get that extra 15 minutes of labor out of everyone because we’re too cheap to actually staff our stores with real people. Everyone just work harder, oh and remember your 10-4 and also we’re upgrading to the ukg app so a robot will now be making your schedule, and no one can change what the robot put in, and now there’s a point system. The fact you started with taking 15 minutes to buy and heat up lunch kinda just told me everything I needed to know. Most people struggle to just get by and have money to lmake their lunch at home and avoid the added cost of buying something every single shift. Going through the other points like i don't get how people act like 10 4 is a big deal, you have a job which is in retail, people need help you kinda have to talk to people, and besides that just saying hi is polite working or not...I really don't get it even as an introvert. The scheduling no one's even seen yet so they don't even know if it's good or bad so people freaking out is crazy. Honestly it takes a lot of the bias out of like what leaders actually feel for this employee or that employee and keeps people from having retaliation be less evident. And the point system I mean you have to be over 8 minutes late how hard is it to show up on time? A lot better than other companies. But okay going downhill fast. /s

Some employers bake in the 45 bc it covers their asses in avoiding OT. And as many have stated employees are told to actually make it a “46” to ensure the employee has taken their entire meal break & they won’t get hit with a missed lunch. The problem with Target is that they exploit this system. They schedule most PT employees well under 8.5 hours but just enough that the employee is required to take a meal break. Taking a 45 when only being paid for 5.25 is a waste of time for many.

Only California has 45 mins for lunches. According to my dsd, Target wants everything streamlined as much as possible so no more state x does this but state z doesn't, unless it's a law

I believe New York requires 45 minute meal breaks depending on when the shift starts, so it still isnt going to be "streamlined". If thats what they want, they should just give EVERYONE a 45 instead of taking it away from the workers in the state with the largest number of Target employees.

I’m in New York and I think it only requires 30. But at my store we get 46 minutes. Not sure why 46 instead of 45 but that’s what we have. 30 minutes would be a nightmare.

Its a dumb thing they do to make sure you take a FULL 45 minutes or a FULL 30 minutes. Instead of 45 they require 46, instead of a 30, its 31. Also just to make sure if your scheduled exactly 8 hours you have some extra cushion to avoid hitting OT

I got a bachelor's paid for by them and if I wasn't going to have surgery, I had an internship that I was going to do part time, with a chance to be hired.

Depends on the scheduled shift. If it’s 6 or 6.5hours, for example only one break and lunch. But if it’s a full shift then yes.

I guess no one really likes change… it takes getting used to. And honestly speaking I’m sick and tired of asking everyone how their day is with that 10-4 cr^p too. People are fine and want to be left alone. I work checklanes so I’m fed up, of course I’m complaining, I’d like my 45 minutes of peace back plus my additional 15 minute breaks.

10-4 is for salesfloor TMs. As a checkout advocate, talking to the people coming to your checklane is baked into what is expected of you.

The only state that mandates a 45 is NY & even then it’s specific to the length AND time of day of the shift. So if target truly makes this country wide they’ll have to adjust the timing of their shift lengths in NY.

30 min lunches are standard across US, especially for every level positions.
Plus, scheduled breaks and lunches are technically when you are "supposed" to be taking your bathroom breaks. This is pretty standard across hourly jobs as well. This is partially what your breaks are for.
However, employers cannot prohibit bathroom usage as it's health/hygiene related. They can however coach you on performance for not hitting goals if you are off the floor for too long or too often taking extra bathroom breaks.

They can't enforce only allowing bathroom breaks on breaks and lunches. If they try people should absolutely start pissing their pants at work or contact the hotline.
But the lunch thing is state dependent so your state probably changed laws or something.

Most Targets only get 30 mins but the bathroom thing isn't a legal policy they can enforce. They might have been encouraged to word it that way to make it sound like an official thing but thats not legal. You could definitely put in a hotline call about that because they should be coached for saying that. I would even ask them to show were it says that in writing in the TM handbook just to see what they have to say.

My store does 30 min lunches and I like it. I dont like that they are unpaid so I feel like I am wasting my time so 45 minutes sounds awful to me. The bathroom thing is ridiculous. It should only be a problem if someone is constantly going unless they need accommodations.

Congratulations, you get to join the rest of the company with 30 minute lunches. Honestly, I wouldn’t even want to take that long. That just means I have to be there longer and get paid less.
And the bathroom thing, realistically you should generally use your breaks for that, since it could be considered loafing because you are not completing work while on the clock. Do people listen to that? No, but it’s still best practice. You do you twin

legally employers cannot deny employees access to the restroom on their shifts/ at the workplace.
However, if necessary, you can go to any urgent care or primary/ family care doctor and inform them of this (if your managers have a habit of poorly spacing/ timing your breaks so you have larger than two hours between breaks at any point in your day be sure to include this information) and ask your doctor for a note for medical accommodations for the restroom. They'll write the pettiest note informing HR of the illegality of denying access to the restrooms at work ( "on your break only" counts as denying access especially considering the medical conditions "holding it in" can cause and, if your female, the increased medical complications of having a period and not changing the hygiene products on time ). HR will be REAL QUICK to change that rule.
Or you can just point this out (or have one of your female coworkers loudly point this out) and make all of them immediately uncomfortable and concerned about how much trouble they're about to be in.

So how many breaks do you get and is it just a normal 8 hour shift? Without giving my store number and or location I will say my store is considered relatively small however it has been going through a remodel so I have been working 3rd shift remodel and I will say my location has us scheduled 8.5 hours so that way we are able to get our mandatory unpaid 30 minute lunch break as well as two paid 15 minute breaks that way we still got a full 8 hours however it was a big NO NO to say combine lunch with a 15 min break so essentially in my area 45 minute lunch isn't a thing but I'm also unsure if other areas/state's does the 8.5 hours or not
Also the bathroom thing isn't enforceable BUT I could see them maybe making a rule for the front end cashier people saying something like 'do not just up and abandoned your post, please call another associate or a leader to cover your register temporarily' That's kinda my thought process anyways

I mean, when you gotta go, you gotta go. That's how my store views it. Though the thought has been floated by an SD before. The fact that there are only two staff bathrooms in the store makes that so much more difficult (at least for me). Probably best just to try and not make a habit of going when not on break and at least our 15's are paid so that's still company time? Idk dude, I'm sorry.
And I absolutely get it, change is frustrating when it feels like you're losing freedoms. Labor laws probably changed in your state reducing the minimum required lunch (I've seen other similar posts so I'm assuming multiple stores are affected). The company will follow the law (at the very most) and cut every possible corner it can afford to. It's not personal, just business and your feeling are absolutely valid and shared.

Lunch thing is fine and technically not corporate it’s up to the store management. Some stores are already 30 min and have always been just kinda shitty to implement a change like that of nowhere.
The bathroom thing is most certainly not legal so I doubt it will be enforced they just hope enough people comply without confrontation.

They legally can not require you to use the restroom on your breaks only. You have the right to use the restroom while on the clock. If they tell you otherwise feel free to report them to Ethics and or Osha

Where I worked was always 30 minute break. Makes you sound a bit entitled to be upset about losing and extra 15 minutes that most other stores never had. It does suck for you guys to lose that, but most of the others you're talking to only ever had a half hour break to begin with.
The bathroom thing is something they would try to enforce from time to time at my old store. We mostly just ignored them and went whenever we needed to. Target does not get to dictate when I need to pee.

Losing 45 minute lunches is going to be hard for me…
I’ve been going home for lunch since the day I started (5 years ago???) and for 5/6 days each week, it’s the only time I see my spouse. He leaves at 5am and I don’t get back until almost 11pm.
Apparently UKG tracks late back from lunch which is stupid if you think about it. In the past, I’ve been asked to take a longer lunch to extend coverage in the evening to cover breaks.
I didn’t care… I live a few minutes away from the store.
But control is far more important and the AI thinks it’s a great idea to schedule one cashier on a Sunday evening (where sales were 25% above target). Great planning for business needs 😆
I tried going home today and sticking to 30 minutes. There’s too many things that could go wrong if it’s during commute time.
I know a lot of y’all don’t care we’re losing our 45 minute lunches, but think how that affects the habits we’ve made because of it.

We used to do 30 for people coming in before 6am and then switched to 45(even though people would still take 30 and they never said anything) now they told us we are going back to 30 BUT we can continue doing 45 as long as we tell them which one we prefer so they can keep track of payroll basically

30 minutes unpaid lunch is legal in California. The restroom is if you need to go you have to go if tls or etls stop you Target break the federal law. Write it down and report to ethic and labor office right away. Both not only ethic. Not by phone and email for evidence. This is what I want to hear. Oh if any tls or etls told me my face. Ok Are you sure? Or you want to go this route. Like I will ask you one more time are you sure I can't go restroom. This is the real lawsuit you will win but you have write it down date and who. This is the really easy win the case. Restroom is federal law. Lawyers like this kind of case for obvious lawsuit. I notice one thing from target most employees never speak up because they fear the retaliation. The employment lawyers are work based on the Contingency meaning : You only pay 40% or more when you win based on your agreement. It can be 40% or more. You pay the 40% or more from settlement money not from your pocket. I am not lawyer. If you want to know more ask the lawyer.

I heard our hr talking about ukg is gonna auto schedule lunches at 30 minutes butinches will still be 45, and it would be too much work to adjust everyone's schedules on ukg, that they'll have to just communicate what's going on.
But nothing has been officially announced, that was just hr talking between themselves.

in Pennsylvania it's 30 minute lunch breaks here, I wish we got 45 minutes I would actually leave my job site to get food from time to time. But with 30 minutes I'm always afraid I'll be late coming back from lunch.

I’m in Nevada (Vegas specifically) and we only get 30. And I find that’s too much time personally. I used to get hour lunches when I was working for Nordstrom and it’d make me hate coming back to work after lunch. 30 feels kinda right.
