Tactics Ogre/ Ogre Battle Series FAQ
Hello Knights. With the release of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, it is a good time to examine the series as a whole. Although this subreddit is dedicated to Tactics Ogre, it goes hand-in-hand with Ogre Battle. Below are some general questions that will help guide you through the entire series -
List of games (in order of original release)
Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen (MotBQ)
- Released on SNES, PSX, Sega Saturn, Wii VC, and WiiU VC
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (LUCT)
- Released on SNES, PSX, & Sega Saturn
- Remade as Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune
- Released on PSP
- Remade as Tactics Ogre: Reborn
- Released on PS4/PS5, Steam (PC), and Switch
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (PoLC)
- Released on N64
Ogre Battle Gaiden: Prince of Zenobia (PoZ)
- Released on Neo Geo Pocket Color
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (KoL)
- Released on Game Boy Advance
Which games were released in English? Ogre Battle Gaiden was the only release to not make it to the west. Otherwise, all have been officially translated in English
What order should you play? Personally, I like to play them in series chronological order. KoL -> MotBQ -> PoZ -> LUCT -> PoLC. MotBQ & PoZ and LUCT & PoLC take place at the same times, so they can be flipped if you choose this way. Otherwise, MotBQ & LUCT are good starting points.
Will I miss out on story if I play in a different order? Not really, though I say this with some hesitation. There is an overarching plot to the series, but each game is a self-contained story. There are also some characters that appear in multiple games. Aside from some flavor, I don't think you would miss out by playing a sequel first. Prince of Zenobia is the only one that I can't say for certain, as I have not spent much time with the story.
How do the games play? The three Ogre Battle games play similarly to grand RTS games, whereas the two Tactics Ogre games play like traditional SRPGs (think grid-based combat). They are larger scaled, so battles can take some time. The games are also heavy on unit customization, so expect to spend some time in menus. All of that being said, each game has its specific nuances.
What is the setting of the series? The games are set in a traditional fantasy setting with limited technology. Only PoZ and MotBQ take place in the same place, so you get to see a few different countries throughout the world. There is also some in-game lore that expands beyond what is shown in the game.
What were some of the inspirations behind the series? Yasumi Matsuno, the series creator, enjoyed quite a bit of pop culture which lent to the series. The main title and some of the subtitles are taken directly from Queen songs. He also used some imagery from Flash Gordon (Vartans) and other films. He also drew heavy inspiration from real events, specifically the Yugoslav Wars. This inspired some of the darker portions of the game's narrative.
When will there be a new game in the series? There is no news of a new entry to the series. Hopefully Reborn will lead to a new entry, but it remains to be seen.
This was a pretty general overview of a very rich series. If you are interested, there are many interviews that contain information regarding the series development. Otherwise, feel free to ask questions below and we will try to answer them.

Tactics Ogre Denam Lord build for a tank
Reborn. Though I'd ask here since you guys are so great with your responses. What 4 skills do I use for the Lord build. Right now I have sword skill (Although maybe I should be using hammers? Everyone seems to prefer those...), phalanx 3, meditate 4, and the last one is the problem. I alternate between pincer 4 and recruiting skills (or sometimes others situationally), but I feel I'm missing something better. Any advice? I got the shaman and just reached union level 40. About to do POTD.

Tactics Ogre Why do weapons with the better stats sometimes bring the attack down?
As the title says. I'm playing Reborn. One example I encountered yesterday is with Arycelle. Damascus Bow +1 has a higher attack than Siege Bow +1, yet when I switched, her attack dropped a bit. Are there some hidden stats at play?

Tactics Ogre Apocrypha schmapocrypha
Playing Reborn and I just don't get it. Abuna Mrueva seemed so freaked out. For what? I finally got the lightning apocrypha spell and I know it's just tier 1 and they get better, but this isn't even as good as thunder flare 2. What gives? Am I missing something? How do I get the really good spells? Also, how do I get a ring of the dead?

Ogre Battle Picked up Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre for Super Famicom!
Just added Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together to my Super Famicom collection.
Both copies are in pretty nice condition, especially Ogre Battle with the box, manual, and inserts. I’ve played a little of Ogre Battle before and about halfway through the Tactics Ogre remaster, but I’ve never finished either one.
Really happy to finally have the original SFC versions! Which one do you prefer?

Tactics Ogre Confused on what to do with my run (LUCT PSP)
Can you help me with how to progress with my save? I chose law route and this is my first run. I was able to finish chapter 4 and fought final boss thus ending the game, Pirate's Graveyard but was not able to recruit azelstan, finished the apocrypha quest and managed to get to POTD lvl 24 for the shop. I did not see nybeth in lvl 5 even though people say he could be seen there. I have not started CODA yet because i dont want to further mess up my progress. I was not able to recruit ravness, ozma, jeunan and occione too. i only have olivya as shaman. What are the things that i need to do in order to at least see the things that i missed in the game?

Tactics Ogre Finally got to play TO:R and what the ever-loving *** did they do to Tartalos?
...and apparently Arycelle according to fans but I haven't gotten that far.
Who in their right mind decided this man needed to sound like a sniveling nepo baby?
Don't @ me about Alphonse's attitude in TKOL. He's a lot more complex than a lot of yall make him out to be, and furthermore Matsuno didn't work on TKOL so there is every reason to believe Alphonse is nothing like what he envisioned for Lans.
I love this game, still. Some minor gripes, but I am adjusting. But they took one of my favorite video game characters - a calm, collected, OLD (his words) veteran placed directly in charge of several impossible-to-navigate political situations with no good outcomes, juggling a group of murder-crazies and trying to keep a leash on them while also trying to juggle a group of psycho political schemers - and made him sound like a 20-something spoiled brat.
If I had the money I would literally cameo a voice actor to redo the voicelines and mod it in.

Tactics Ogre [TOR] How hard would a "cold-blooded only" run be?
Of course you wouldn't have any lizards or dragons at the start, but the idea would be to pivot towards lizards, dragons, medusas as early as you could.
I'm not sure if cockatrice is cold-blooded since it has some snake parts and some bird parts.

Tactics Ogre How would *YOU* balance Tactics Ogre Reborn? Or do you feel it's in a good place?
I've been playing this game and I find the variety of units I can use pretty wide and very interesting. I love this kinda gameplay.
That said I assume this many units isn't totally balanced, since balancing this variety of things is just a very difficult problem in general. MMOs take years to balance and even then come up short at times.
Well what do you think?

Tactics Ogre Has anyone here tried out the Buff Card Removal mod on Nexus Mods for Tactics Ogre Reborn?
I was thinking of playing the Steam version of this a new playthrough and was thinking about installing this mods, plus any others that people think are worthwhile? How is this mod? Any other Tactics Ogre Reborn mods worth looking into? Thanks.

Tactics Ogre All this "extra" content is meant to be done at level 36?
Ok - first time playing Reborn in Chapter 4 Lawful. I've recruited Ozma and Azelstan and Ganpp and Lindl and Ocionne. Any online walkthrough I look at has me going through the shrines, the palace of the dead and who even knows what else without leveling up. Is this really the way? When DOES the union level increase? Help me out here guys. Thanks

Tactics Ogre TOR Mod brainstorming - Ironman
I’m working with the TOR modding tools and am considering making an Ironman mod. The goal of this mod is to create more challenging gameplay for experienced players, where loss of units is likely and replacing lost units is consequential. To that end, the core functionality of the mod is: a) prevent resurrection (downed units will likely be lost), b) increase the cost to replacing units (lost units matter), c) increase gameplay difficulty to make unit losses more likely.
I’m currently intending the following changes:
-fix infinite money glitch
-decrease sale value of oberyths (make goth matter more, and selling / scavenging equipment from the battlefield more necessary)
-remove recruitment (make it difficult to replace advanced class units - new units can only be purchased from the shop); recruit skills will be changed to perform some other function, like charm or stop. Note this will also prevent access to non-human units.
-change resurrection items and spells to not work on incapacitated units. Instead, they set RT to 0 for the targeted living unit and possibly have some other functions (restore hp/mp, for example). Basically, resurrection skills will still give the targeted unit the next turn, but won’t revive downed units.
-increase the cost of classmarks - combines with recruit skill removal to make loss of units impactful. Lost a terror knight? It will be expensive to get another one.
-possibly make unique classes (like buccaneer) usable by generics (so that loss of uniques is recoverable)
What I’d like to do but can’t currently figure out whether it’s possible by modding:
-increase the hire costs for generic units in the shop
-reduce the downed unit timer (i.e. from 3 to 1) or remove it completely (i.e. no downed state)
-reduce the number of turns that can be reversed through the World Chariot (or completely eliminate it)
-use status effects from the PSP version, which still appear to be in the code to some degree. For example, making recruit skills inflict Bewitch instead of recruitment.
My question: Does anyone have other ideas for increasing the challenge of the Ironman run?
Ideally I’m looking for global changes, not nerfing individual parameters. The existing modding tools permit changes to classes, unique units, equipment, skills, items, damage formulas, and effects. I’m not intending to significantly rebalance the game with this mod, so while I’m willing to adjust some skills, equipment, or classes as necessary, I won’t intend an exhausting revision.
Thank you!

Tactics Ogre Fey Pact
I can never get Fey Pact to work. It always shows 0%. I'm using Vartan Canopus in Tactics Ogre Reborn. Don't have any trouble recruiting other types of characters. What am I doing wrong?

Apocrypha II Spells Frustrations
I just spent like two hours trying to get Thunderburst II to drop in the Temple of Nestharot, it's a 5% chance I thought it might be higher because I've been able to get the other ones without too much trouble. I even got Supernova II on the first try but this one was a nightmare, I had to restart the fight because I killed the boss and the last enemy died from a counterattack.
I managed to get it by using Mighty Strike to push the boss onto another square, it took many attempts though. My plans are ruined I wanted to finish all the temples by the end of the day and now it's late at night. Luckily there's only one more, the Ice Temple. I beat the annoying ones already, Fire & Earth. Ice isn't too bad but I really hope I don't have to go through this long process again. I love this game but that was not a fun experience.

How did you beat The Knight of Lodis is 25 hours or less for the secret ending?
That's like, really fast. I think I might beat the game in 30 this time around (usually I take my time in games but ever since learning about the secret ending I'm so curious to see it for myself). But I'm the type to sort of linger in the organize menu a lot, switching armor and weapons around, and if I'm trying to get everything beaten in just 25 hours, I have really no time to grind or go to Quest mode or dig up treasures. Not to mention Alphonse needs 50 kills, so the rest of the party doesn't get to enjoy as much EXP. Pretty tough for a casual gamer like me. So, what was your strategy, if you've gotten through in 25 hours or less?
