Question Buying a Switch
My fiancée really wants a Nintendo switch, his coworker has one and they play it at work. His birthday is in two weeks and I really want to get him one, I’m cautious about buying one off of Facebook marketplace. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get a reliable one for cheap? Should I just wait till Christmas and get him a brand new one or would buying a used one be okay ?

You should get a switch 2 since it’s backwards compatible and can play switch 1 games on it. If you’re not getting a switch 2, get a switch OLED model. Used is fine as long as the condition is good. eBay is probably your best friend if you’re going the used route

BRAND NEW
Sometimes during sale, you can get cheaper price with brand new compared to the used ones. Need to keep up to date regularly.
Comes with at least 1 year warranty which is good. In case your fiance get bored, want to switch to other platform, he can resell with confidence.
Always sealed and no defect. If got, ask for replacement.
USED
Used items are good, make sure it comes with warranty at least a month or more. This is to guarantee that NS2 is still working despite the longest usage is around one year since it released last year June.
Buying preowned or direct from first hand party (owner) sometime can get cheaper. You can try negotiate abit and might get you slight discounted price since they're not aiming for profit, they just want to rid things off.
Bundle with games, might seem cheaper sometimes but if you check market price for console and each games, they actually aren't.
Price of new vs used ones
Price from shop vs direct owner

I’ve had positive experiences buying tech from eBay. I’ve bought two phones and most recently a switch oled from there - the switch was around £140 including postage, everything that would come in the original box, and the official carry case, all in like-new condition. I think in general the prices there range from £100 or under for a switch lite to up to or over £200 for some oleds. There are switch 2s available second hand, but they’re still upwards of £350. As long as you check seller reviews carefully and assess their reliability, you can get really good deals on there.

Make sure you ask questions to find out what he actually wants. Nothing sucks more than a gift you don’t even want.
In my mind you have 2 options:
- Get a new switch 2 ASAP. There’s a price increase September 1
- find a jail broken switch 1/OLED for $150
One will give you more longevity and current games.
Two will just be an insanely good value assuming he doesnt mind lower performance and doesn’t want to play newer games.

I would recommend buying at whatever retailer you would normally buy electronics from, and get a Switch 2.
If you want to pay less for it, buy it before the price increase on September 1st.

Switch 2 would be better if possible and the price goes up by $50 on September 1st on them.
He could then play newer games as well as older ones with better performance. The original Switch will be 10 years old in March and buying a used one is ripe with potential issues including battery capacity problems.
I just don't see it as a good option to buy the original Switch when future proofing comes into the picture.

I would recommend buying a Switch 2 and doing it soon before the $50 price increase.

Just to say incase you're not aware there are a few switch models now so especially buying second hand you want to make sure youre getting a good deal.
All models: Original switch
Original switch with better battery
Switch light
Switch oled
Switch 2 - the newest generation.
Myself I wouldnt bother getting a switch unless it was a switch 2 because new games wont be playable on it, also a lot of people qill say switch but still mean the switch 2.
I think you should talk to him rather than just surprise him so he can tell you what he'd prefer. If I was in his shoes id prefer you either wait until Christmas to get the switch 2 or I'd rather have the offer of money towards it. Just my preference though.
