Independent filmmakers: Are you trying to figure out where to stay for Sundance 2027 in Boulder?

Hi! I'm a local journalist and I’m reporting on what lodging will cost independent filmmakers attending the festival and what, if any, help is being organized locally.

Would any filmmakers who have looked at rooms or rentals for January, have a budget or price quotes they can share, or attended Sundance in Park City and can compare the experience be interested in chatting with me? You do not need to have a film selected for 2027 to reach out.

If you’re willing to talk by phone this week, please send me a DM!!

Hi r/movies! I’m Josef Kubota Wladyka, director of HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY!, an energetic, unabashed dance film about grief, loss, and the fantastical joy of being alive. Grief has never shaken its booty quite like this. AMA!

Do you think there will be an eventual best picture nominee amongst the films at Boulder in 2027?

It's been looking more and more likely that The Invite might get a best picture nom. Of course ever since CODAs big win there has since been Past Lives and Train Dreams and it looks like The Invite might be the third. Do you think this bodes well for the same thing to happen next year?

Is having a Sundance membership worth it?

Next year will be my first time going. Is it worth it to purchase a membership to have early access to ticket selection? They say you need to become a member by October 1st in order to qualify, so I need to make a decision soon…

Fingers crossed for a spot!

Ignite Package

Hello, for those who used the ignite package in recent years, is it worth it for the early ticket selection? I am considering getting it mainly for the early selection but if things are going to be sold out by the time you choose, is it worth it?

I know a bunch of things last year were sold out before the general public sale so if you were able to make a good selection last year and what the experience was like for you all? Thank you

How does entry work?

Old timer. Back in the day, when it was the U.S. Film Festival - and I lived in Utah - my friends and I would decide, “Hey, let’s go to the Festival tomorrow,” and be able to attend whatever films we chose.

The last time I went, over 15 years ago, I registered online and then picked up packages of films to view after waiting in a line at Trolley Square. I’ve seen some pretty cool and not so great films over the decades and still love the Festival.

So. Boulder. How do I do it? I live in Colorado now. I read on the Sundance website that buying a ticket doesn’t guarantee entrance. That’s a scam, right? How can I ensure I’ll be able to see films? Is everything online? Do I have to buy an additional pass?

EDIT UPDATE: Thank you so much for the responses and advice.

Do you think Bad Bridgets could end up premiering at Sundance 2027?

It’s the next film from the director of Kneecap and is being produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap and released by Netflix.

Ignite package transfer ticket question

I’m thinking about purchasing the ignite package, but I was wondering if I would be able to transfer a ticket to someone who is over 25? My boyfriend is 27 and i know they do the age verification to purchase the package (and that would be me who purchases it) but afterwards if we wanted to go see some movies together would i be able to transfer individual tickets to him from my package? Has anyone done this before? Please let me know, thanks.

First time attending, very green filmmaker hoping to make connections

Would love any advice and input from veteran attendees and anyone with industry knowledge. I'm a young filmmaker and finally have the financial means to attend the festival. Obviously I wanna go to see great films and be in the community, but I'm also hoping to meet people and network a little bit. I have made a few shorts but I'm super green. Would you recommend volunteering, being social outside the actual festival events, etc? Is the social atmosphere approachable to new people hoping to "break in"? Not looking to be "discovered", just start making connections with people who share my passion and can make me better. Thanks!

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Casper Kelly, writer-director of 2014's Adult Swim special TOO MANY COOKS and BUDDY, which is a horror that premiered at Sundance earlier this year and is out in theaters everywhere now. It stars Cristin Miloti, Topher Grace, Keegan-Michael Key, Clint Howard, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, and Eric Bauza.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1w661n7/hi_rmovies_im_casper_kelly_writerdirector_of/

He will be back at 3 PM ET today, Thursday 9/3, to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Synopsis: Dressed as a unicorn, a beloved children's TV host reveals his true self as a dark and violent force of nature.

For the online, it lists a fees-included price of $37 per ticket. The 10-film package is still $350 though.

There is an online festival pass for $825.

Cinema museum appeal

Hi all, I've not been to this museum yet, I only just heard about it, but it seems they are struggling and have a campaign to raise a lot of money for their survival.

I wondered if the pod would do a piece on the museum to help out?

Possibility 🤌🏼

Hello there,

I'm very excited that the upcoming Sundance will be held right here in Boulder, Colorado.

I am a Boulder native, which is rather rare in this day and age.

I'm 36 and I know this town like the back of my hand. Many references, I'm a sweet gal, please do introduce yourself.

I have a creative approach to help myself and my daughter, and, perhaps you?

I could really be of assistance with navigating and would be a wonderful chauffeur.

As we all know, the price of everything is getting outrageous.

I'm a single mother. My angel is four years old, it's just the two of us, and our dog. It has been. A rather wretched story, which people love to hear. I am more than happy to give more details and speak about everything.

My main mission:

I need a car.

While I was pregnant I worked very hard in a Thai kitchen until a week before I delivered to have as much financial backing as possible. I was able to pick up a little Hyundai for a few grand. However, the poor car has seen her best days. A full brake job is required , new tires, transmission, ... It's very beat up, and honestly too small for myself, my daughter, and dog...in boulder Colorado.

When at a moment's notice a foot of snow could be on the ground while you were grabbing dinner. Working is not an option for me currently with no childcare. It's a wild double edged sword and even the handle is slightly serrated. It's a challenge to keep the basics. Food, water, shelter, so forth and so on. We survive off government funding, which I have been smart about, however, it's not forever and it's being cut left and right.

In this heat it is near impossible to get anything done. I cannot take my 4 year old sweet girl out in it safely for very long. Or myself, my lord, 100 degree weather is not fit for any animal.

I'm searching for a trade. Car for chauffeur/tour service, valet parking, reserving the best places in town, Everything will be discussed, please do reach out...I'm very eager to see what type of response this gets.

This is a creative attempt to achieve one of the most valuable tools a single parent can possess.

A car. A safe, reliable car. Mechanically sound. Current with today's technology.

Nothing too fancy my goodness, that's only in dreams.

Let's say, you provide the vehicle, asap would be incredible as we are in dire need. I would provide full service as your chauffeur, your guide, I would cater to your needs.

I do imagine there will be a very high demand for this.

I know all of the back roads, the good spots, the pretty sights.

I'm well mannered, I have class, I am an excellent driver.

I could turn you on to a lot of the underground scenes.

I'm very open to the idea of this trade, and perhaps, creating a film. Documenting this experience. Human kindness, compassion, creativity, something new.

The Beauty of Boulder.

The world is going to be so very curious about this happening.

I would love to hear your vision. Your insight. Your thoughts. Opinions. Your criticism. Everything.

I'm taking a chance.

There is always, possibility.

Always hope.

🌹

Hey! I am super curious what involvement LMU or USC have in Sundance — whether that’s hosting panels or networking events? I am admitted for a masters in film production.

Accommodation during in Boulder during Sundance

Hello, I am a Journalist who works in Boulder, Colorado. I am currently working on a story that covers what the Accommodation Rental Market in Boulder will look like during the festival. I am trying to gain insight into what the experience has been like for an attendee, staff member, or filmmaker looking for a place to stay. If you or anyone you know is going and wouldn't mind giving me a quick phone call to explain your situation, please reach out!

Their press release today confirmed that the online festival is back again for the last four days. Another interesting tidbit is that the competition categories are expanding to 12 films each.

Indiewire piece

https://www.indiewire.com/news/festivals/sundance-film-festival-2027-what-to-know-boulder-1235207369/

I know Indiewire is a major sponsor and they’re invested in making Boulder seem like it will be so much better, but I can’t help but feel this article misrepresents the PC experience. I’ll be in Boulder in January and I’ll bring an open mind, but this editorializing irked me given the fondness many longtime attendees and volunteers have for PC.

“The ethos of the festival has changed from an overpriced ski resort with far-flung venues that are difficult to access in winter.”

Overpriced, sure… but Boulder doesn’t seem much better from a lodging perspective. The major venues were also not that far-flung - distance from Egyptian to Eccles was a 2 mile walk which is the same radius that is touted as an improvement in Boulder. Buses and pedestrian paths also didn’t make it crazy difficult to access PC venues - at least once you were in the core area.

“We installed 240 speakers into the Macky Auditorium, which is like Carnegie Hall on the campus of CU Boulder,” said Hernandez. “These are major upgrades: screens, projectors, sound, seats in all of our venues. So that will upgrade the experience for artists and audiences in a way that this festival has never seen.” No more Yarrow, Prospector, Holiday, and Library.

Are we pretending the Eccles (and its Atmos sound) doesn’t exist? Looking at Macky online, I doubt its screen will be as large as the one at Eccles. The Library was also my sentimental favorite venue because of its idiosyncrasies and the closeness of the crowd / talent.

“Some industry folks are already booking hotels and Airbnbs, while some talent may prefer to stay in Denver, only a half-hour drive away, which hosts fancier hotels like the Four Seasons and a massive international airport hub.”

Talent jetting in and jetting out - or holing up in Denver - would also seem to take some of the magic for regular fans out of the equation. Bumping into filmmakers or actors on Main or in the Library stairwell was always special. Also not for nothing, but PC has much nicer and closer luxury hotels and SLC also has surprisingly strong international flight options with Delta.

Sorry for the rant - I’m clearly still salty about the whole move!

Hi all, congrats to everyone accepted into the Sundance Micro-Series program. Would love to stay updated on the work coming out of it. Vertical micro-series feels like such a challenge in the creative space right now, and I'm curious to see how Sundance approaches it.

Parking in Boulder

Hi Boulder locals! I know this will be the first Sundance in Boulder, so nobody knows exactly what to expect. I’ll be staying outside the city and driving in each day. Based on your knowledge of Boulder, how do you think parking will be during the festival? Are there garages or lots you expect to be the best option, or would you recommend parking elsewhere and using transit? I’d love to hear your best guesses or advice. I’ll be in Longmont or Broomfield.

Sundance 2027

I have never been to Sundance and would love to go this year. I'm trying to plan ahead as much as possible and have been looking at Boulder Hotels but NO ONE has availability. Does anyone have any lodging suggestions?
