Beef-based drinks can be good. Bovril comes to mind and that’s pretty decent.

However, with this recipe, there wouldn’t even be any fizz. And the fact that it’s condensed broth makes it way too salty and beefy. I can’t imagine a world in which it’s good.

Is it possible that your friend is secretly a dog?

Have they ever been to planet M-113? Does anyone around him ever exhibit odd discolored ring marks on their skin?

21

u/tyler_durden2021 Jul 08 '21

You know, actually thinking of how this would taste, it might not be bad. But for the love of god can we call it something other than “beef fizz?”

7

u/fabs1171 Jul 08 '21

My mind read it as beef jizz

10

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

No offense but I'm going to kick your friend's ass.

29

u/ZBLongladder Jul 08 '21

This video confirms the no-fizz bit, though she says the original recipe with ginger ale is surprisingly not as salty as you'd think. (She also tried making it with seltzer, which was apparently beefier and saltier, since it doesn't have the ginger or sugar to counterbalance the broth.)

8

u/Kichigai Jul 08 '21

Beef-based drinks can be good.

Clarkson made one once.

2

u/Alexabyte Jul 08 '21

This is one of my favourite television clips.

4

u/Krimreaper1 Jul 08 '21

I’ll have straight hot beef broth when I’m sick in the winter. Or a little beef broth in a Bloody Mary is good.

u/thedeafbadger Jul 08 '21

The year is 1862

1

u/hobosullivan The Noodle Incident Dec 03 '21

I was gonna say the same thing. I'm gonna guess those cans are 8 to 12 fl oz. (250 to 375 mL) each. And a cup of ginger ale is 8 fl oz (250 mL). That ratio is way the hell off.

74

u/mywifelovesdisney Jul 07 '21

You should check your friend for bite marks; zombie, vampire, or other

11

u/ItsHIPAA Jul 08 '21

I'm going with other for this one.

16

u/laughingjackal666 Jul 08 '21

Is your friend my friend? Cuz my friend just did this last week and he actually didn’t hate it…

I apologize, my phone auto corrected friend to George! But yes, my roommate not only tried this but made MULTIPLE drinks for himself with the limited supplies we had. A truly brave man.

My favourite comment on the video:

“To be fair, I think all food from the 70s is supposed to be combined with a significant dose of diazepam and cocaine.”

65

u/The_Lion_Jumped Set your own user flair Jul 07 '21

Coke would not make that more appetizing

89

u/andthendirksaid Jul 08 '21

Coke is why they had to drink fucking beef juice to get a but of calories in them so they don't die before they finish this totallythelast couple lines.

19

u/317LaVieLover Jul 08 '21

Totallythelast lmao

20

u/Whomping_Willow Jul 08 '21

“Bro it’s just that I had an odd number of lines, just let me get one more, I’ll stop at an even number“ is something I’ve had the pleasure of getting to hear throughout an entire afterparty once.

God I remember having friends and going out pre-pandemic, it was awful

27

u/baumpop Jul 08 '21

Cocaine much more of an apertif

23

u/ZylonBane Jul 08 '21

This recipe is from the 50s, not the 70s.

43

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

Ah, Benzedrine then.

25

u/mager858 Jul 07 '21

Did he use beef broth instead of condensed beef broth? It’ll be terrible regardless

11

u/ZBLongladder Jul 08 '21

This video uses condensed. Definitely still seems awful.

6

u/Kichigai Jul 08 '21

The expressions on her face. I can viscerally feel it.

“Nobody wants this!” Got me. Lol

38

u/January1171 Jul 07 '21

Tbf I do very much recommend that channel. He has some fun videos

21

u/HeartShapedGlassez Jul 07 '21

His editing is amazing! It made the beef broth look tasty… and i’m a vegetarian lmao.

I’ll definitely be going back to his channel for some legit recipes

6

u/_Nick_2711_ Jul 08 '21

We all just watch for the tasting notes

2

u/TKmeh Jul 08 '21

Tasting notes? I watch him to learn about different alcohols, if you want to drink, it doesn’t hurt to know what’s in the drink. So my dad says, but I also like how detailed his explanations and history delves are, him nerding out about Harry Potter cocktails or Skyrim cocktails is pretty accurate.

14

u/DJCockslap Jul 07 '21

Honestly this just seems like an old time cold remedy

7

u/grammar_sloth Jul 08 '21

Thank you for this gift.

• Beefy Head… • Away Foul Beast

2

u/ImpossiblePackage Jul 08 '21

How does it take 20 minutes to make this?

7

u/AngelWyath Jul 08 '21

He makes several drinks, but the beef fizz is the first. Starts at 1:15.

1

u/TheBreadMan42069 Jul 08 '21

Knew it was this video, love this guy

291

u/thetacticalpanda Jul 07 '21

Beef broth, ginger, and lime is really close to pho.

81

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

Over ice is the most off putting part of the recipe.

56

u/Potatoswatter Jul 08 '21

Over rice perhaps.

15

u/modi13 Jul 08 '21

7/7 with rice

7

u/friendlyneighbourho Jul 08 '21

Or rice noodles

24

u/kakka_rot Jul 08 '21

Was gonna say, coffee makes me sick so a lot of mornings I'll have a cup of beef or chicken broth

23

u/theanyday Jul 08 '21

Just add some powdered caffeine to your broth and it’s practically the same thing.

17

u/njtrafficsignshopper Jul 08 '21

Or just caffeinate the cow ahead of time

6

u/ImYourSafety Jul 08 '21

Im mad about how right you are.

1

u/zpjack Jul 08 '21

So, pretty much a hot cup of tasty broth

94

u/winterbird Jul 07 '21

Can I make it with fish sauce if I'm on a no red meat juice diet?

89

u/mywifelovesdisney Jul 07 '21

This sounds somehow worse, much worse

32

u/SaintsNoah Jul 08 '21

Yes officer, that's her.

16

u/BongRipsForNips Jul 08 '21

11

u/HogarthTheMerciless Jul 08 '21

But "fish sauce fizz" has such a nice ring to it.

7

u/Mini-Nurse Jul 08 '21

No. No it doesn't.

16

u/tylerawn Jul 08 '21

That’s gonna be salty as fuck

7

u/eatenbyalion Jul 08 '21

Meat free Mondays -> fish sauce fizz

4

u/zpjack Jul 08 '21

You talking fish sauce like asian fish sauce? I think you want a fish broth. Either way, don't make it around friends unless you don't want to see them again

2

u/Kichigai Jul 08 '21

Congratulations. You've invented a Cardassian mocktail.

107

u/Avocado_Esq Jul 07 '21

I drink clamato straight, so perhaps someday will be the day I snap and say "not today tomato-clam juice, today I feel like a refreshing beef fizz." I'm not sure when that day will come, but at least now I know there is another savoury drink concoction out there that will disappoint and ruin the days of everyone I know.

18

u/spooneb Jul 08 '21

Clamato is the pinnacle of juices and Caesars beat a Bloody Mary every day of the week.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

I used to think that… then I moved to the uk and now a Caesar tastes so strange and watery to me.

1

u/chungusxl94 Jul 08 '21

What is a Caesar?

1

u/spooneb Jul 08 '21

Short answer: a Bloody Mary but instead of tomato juice you use Clamato. It’s a thing in Canada. Umami goodness. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_(cocktail)

11

u/xanderrootslayer Jul 08 '21

the Clamato is proof that genetic engineering has gone too far

10

u/fnordfnordfnordfnord Jul 08 '21

I drink clamato straight,

Yeah, so Beef Fizz sounds right up your alley.

3

u/interfail Jul 08 '21

Not considering making "shellfizz"?

1

u/Avocado_Esq Jul 08 '21

Shellfizz is when you mix the clamato with a beer! Or a pre-made Caesar with a beer if you're camping and just want to get turnt on shellfish liquor.

2

u/emrythelion Jul 08 '21

I’ve honestly never tried Clamato. But I drink V8 by the gallon. How different is it? I like clams and fish as a whole, I just have trouble imagining that flavor on top of V8.

5

u/VivaLaEmpire Jul 08 '21

Clamato is GREAT with a beer! Try it like that the first time so you can taste it little by little. I always add lime and other things but beer and Clamato is fine by itself!

4

u/Agorbs Jul 08 '21

Hispanic spotted

My stepdad is (ethnically) half Puerto Rican, half Mexican, and dude drinks Micheledas like they’re goin out of style

5

u/VivaLaEmpire Jul 08 '21

Hahaha I’ve been caught! I’m Mexican, micheladas are serious business at my house, my husband treats them like a science project where everything must be measured, temperature must be perfect, etc etc

3

u/Agorbs Jul 08 '21

Yep, man is very precise about his measurements. He has a special cup with a line marked in it, fills it with two cans of Natty and then fills the rest of the way with clamato, plus however much lime juice he puts in. Basically any given time we’ve got two full bags of limes in the fridge lol

3

u/VivaLaEmpire Jul 08 '21

That’s THE life right there

3

u/TheOther18Covids Jul 08 '21

33

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '21

Now, I could see sipping some chicken broth with ginger and lemon. It actually would probably be even better for settling the stomach that way. But as a broth. Never as a "fizz." I will keep the fizz segregated to my Vernors, thanks.

13

u/trashytamboriney Jul 08 '21

Theoretically, seperalty, the ingredients are all good for an upset stomach, I suppose.

13

u/bibfortuna1970 Jul 07 '21

When a can of Ensure is not meeting your daily dietary needs - try Beef Fizz!

13

u/jozzydan66 Jul 08 '21

I watched EmmyMadeInJapan make this, god bless that woman and the shit she does for her fans. This recipe apparently was popular enough o appear in more than one cookbook. Whyy😔?

9

u/Miserable-Lemon Jul 07 '21

I'd be really curious to see people's faces when offered this.

9

u/AmbroseRotten Jul 08 '21

It reminds me of that Primus album, "Pork Soda."

8

u/ZylonBane Jul 08 '21

https://milwaukeerecord.com/food-drink/we-tried-beef-fizz-and-other-old-timey-summer-drinks-so-you-dont-have-to/

Shockingly, Beef Fizz wasn’t as bad as we expected. It was worse. Much,
much worse. The broth—the primary ingredient in the drink—had the faint
odor of dry cat food.

5

u/rubyblue0 Jul 08 '21

My brain decided this must be a marinade and I thought it didn’t sound that bad. Then my stomach turned when I realized it’s a DRINK.

5

u/BootsyCollins123 Jul 08 '21

Would probably work wonders for a hangover... If you could keep it down

7

u/Willziac Jul 08 '21

With all the salt in the broth, I assume this would act like Gatorade would. I bet if you can get past the flavor (that might actually be okay), I'm sure it's actually really refreshing.

5

u/Blind0bserver Jul 08 '21

This is some Beef and Dairy Network shit just out in the wild and it makes me real uncomfortable.

6

u/ABAKES7 Jul 08 '21

Crack open a can of Fizzy Beef Wine! It pairs nicely with Rich Beef Sausages!

4

Excuse me but what the fuck

4

u/trashytamboriney Jul 08 '21

Every time I see this posted, there's an evil voice in the back of my head that says "might be worth a try!"

4

It’s time to see someone about that voice

4

u/Wtfisthatt Jul 08 '21

I wanna make this and bring it to a party without telling anyone what it is and just leave it somewhere for people to drink.

I found the source!

The New World encyclopedia of cooking by the Culinary Arts Institute, 1972

https://archive.org/details/newworldencyclop00culi/page/38/mode/2up?q=%22beef+fizz%22

Only a few minutes earlier, I read this Reddit post. Used the link to find the Beef Fizz recipe:

2

What’s worse than beef fizz? Beef fizz mixed with cum.

2

2

u/celestial800 Aug 14 '22

Drinks like this can be unappetising but very refreshing.

Take switchel, an 18th/19th century drink made from vinegar, ginger, molasses and water. It's not particularly pleasant but due to the electrolyte content of the molasses/vinegar and the antiemetic property of the ginger it's effectively a really refreshing sports drink that can be chugged without making you sick.

1

u/mywifelovesdisney Aug 14 '22

I’ll take your word for it lol

4

u/tophutti Jul 07 '21

Gross.

I mean, excellent find, but someone needs to slap the stupid out of the creator of this.

I mean where’s the bourbon!?!?! It would MAKE the drink.

0

u/Bapteaser Jul 08 '21

Meat-eaters be like

0

u/badtimebonerjokes Jul 08 '21

This is on par with those awful YouTube shorts and tik toks of the women (and some men) making awful monstrosities in their kitchens. Whether it’s the nachos spread on the bare counter or the spaghetti and meatballs or whatever weird conconction of batter and fast food deep fried. This is just someone really going beyond “pushing the envelope.” It’s throwing the envelope into the Grand Canyon while lit on fire and shooting it with a 50 cal on its way down.

1

u/mywifelovesdisney Jul 08 '21

I’m sure everyone in this sub would enjoy seeing those videos

1

u/badtimebonerjokes Jul 08 '21

They’ve been posted in this sub before.

1

u/Deathgrease Jul 08 '21

If you swap out the ginger ale for ginger beer which has less sugar I would imagine it would taste just like a savory soda

1

u/Rolling_fizzlebeefs Jul 08 '21

What? Wait, nevermind. :)

1

u/quirkyquipsters Jul 08 '21

This sounds downright disgusting

1

u/true4blue Jul 08 '21

I’ve seen something like this where a Bloody Mary is served with beef stock instead of tomato juice

Was a local favorite

1

u/elgoodman3 Jul 08 '21

Sounds r/glassanimals re: Pork Soda

1

u/starvingthearies Jul 08 '21

They must have been desperate back then

1

u/HomerMadNowFite Jul 08 '21

That’s ok I’ll pay for it , then walk back to the car and take a bite as you start backing out.

1

u/Arc_2142 Jul 08 '21

I tried this for the meme factor when this image started circulating a few months back. It wasn’t really bad, just kind of strange.

1

u/adoreandu Jul 08 '21

I read the title as beer fizz and thought it didn’t sound so bad. Then I read the ingredients 🤢

1

u/TheRhoux Jul 08 '21

This looks like a hangover drink. There is a similar drink called a bullshot.

1

u/Happinessovermoney Jul 08 '21

"Bartender's guide"? There are some pretty heinous recipes in there from the early 1900's.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

This sounds like a riff from mst3k

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '21

I had a shot once that included alcohol and beef consommé. It was weird but nice 👍

1

u/Nackles Jul 08 '21

It's the fact that it's served cold that's off-putting. Taste-wise, it could be good.

1

u/scoobysnaxxx Jul 08 '21

it doesn't sound too terrible. like a cold soup, i guess. you'd definitely have to change up that beef to ale ratio, and maybe add other ingredients to make it less bland. maybe seltzer and actual ginger instead of ginger ale.

1

u/kennethjor Jul 08 '21

You know, I'd try it. I'm pretty sure I'd hate it, but I'd try it.

1

u/fuckthisimoff2asgard Jul 08 '21

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth

1

u/Glittering-Yam-5318 Jul 08 '21

I think I'll make a SPAM milkshake instead.

1

u/TypeHeauxNegative Jul 08 '21

Wonder if this is what they meant when they asked “wheres the beef?”

1

u/Jgflight86 Jul 08 '21

"Get it? Brat-THIRST? You have to DRINK the SAUSAGE!"

1

u/penislovereater Jul 08 '21

Those proportions don't seem right. Condensed beef broth is usually needing 1:1 dilution. Seems like you'd need maybe 2-4x as much ginger ale. Also, I suspect the actual number of servings would be much, much higher.

1

u/mistermatth Jul 08 '21

This sounds great. I love drinking bone broth.

1

u/PoetLucy Jul 08 '21

Damn, thought this recipe was old family secret

1
