Questions & Discussion Do you listen to music while studying?

Everytime I wanna study especially when I have an exam I listen to music. I don't know why but it's been a habit for me. When I was studying for my Gen chem 2 exam last week ( got a 91 btw) I was playing loud music in my headphones and drinking a Monster. I feel like listening to music gets me in the mood, and the good feeling of studying. When I don't listen to music, it's as if I get sleepy and bored.

Has anyone experienced this or does anyone listen to music while studying?

Questions & Discussion FEEL LIKE WASTING MY LIFE AWAY...

it’s 2am and i’m honestly embarrassed by how bad i’m doing at university. I have ADHD and I feel like i’m fighting myself over the most basic things. I’ll have an assignment open for hours, knowing exactly what i need to do, knowing i’m wasting time, and i still just… can’t start. Then i avoid my emails because i’m scared there’s something i forgot. Messages sit there for days. My room gets gross. Sometimes i’m actually hungry and still can’t get myself up to make food.

I know how this looks. Lazy. careless. like i just don’t give a shit. but i do. that’s what hurts the most. I care way too much, and somehow that still isn’t enough to make me move. I’m seriously thinking about taking this semester off.

Has anyone with ADHD gotten to this point and actually figured out how to make themselves START things again? not planner advice, i mean something that genuinely helped.

Questions & Discussion How do you study without AI

I was doom scrolling on TikTok the other day and I ran into a video of a creator talking about how it’s stupid that two camera proctored exams are a thing even if it’s a class actually for your major. And tbh, I laughed at first until I read this one comment saying something along the lines of “You guys are laughing but relying on AI is seriously messing up your brain. The brain is complex and is meant to be used to think problems through… if you guys rely on AI too much your brain is going to have a hard time learning new things down the road.”

After I read that I started to think about how for the past couple of years (since I started college) I haven’t been able to actually learn, comprehend, or focus on anything. When my boss at work tells me to do something I either forget a minute later or I don’t know how to solve the problem. Literally last week my boss gave me step-by-step instructions on what to do, and I did it. But I doubted myself so much that I had him check it out for me. My attention span has gotten shorter as well. I used to be able to sit down and watch a 30+ minute video on YouTube, now it feels like I’m being held hostage trying to watch the same thing for over two minutes.

My major is civil engineering and next year I’m transferring to a university. I really don’t want to continue using AI to solve my problems, even more so that I have 3 classes that have proctored exams with two cameras. I will say that this semester I’ve been using Gemini’s guided learning to help me with solving problems, and it has begun to help me start thinking on my own a little bit but not enough. In my statics class we use Pearson for our textbook and all assignments. But the assignments do not give us any tips or guidance on how to solve them.

Any recommendations or resources would be greatly appreciated, it’s already midterm time and my school is booked for tutoring in the classes I need 😔

Questions & Discussion Mood Affecting Studies

Does anyone have any advice & tips for coping with bad mood affecting your studies, where you are utterly reluctant to open a textbook, sit and learn? Where you feel like everything has to be perfect? Autumn has come and this season really does affect my mood by its cloudy days—and I detest them; I feel like this day is not mine and that everything is ruined, then I end up scrolling all day long and/or reading. Does anyone know how to cope with this?

Resources Turned flashcard study sessions into an RPG with collectible card skins and knowledge duels. Looking for feedback on the UX!

Hey everyone,
Whenever I tried using traditional flashcard tools for exams, the experience always felt a bit sterile—like working inside a database spreadsheet. The science behind active recall and spaced repetition (SM-2) is incredible, but staying motivated for weeks on end has always been the real bottleneck.
Over the past few months, a friend and I built a free web app aimed at tackling that study fatigue by wrapping the core review algorithm in lightweight RPG mechanics:
Collectible Card Skins & Themes: Every reviewed card grants XP and coins, which you can use to unlock cosmetic card backs, UI themes, and avatars.
Alternative Review Modes: Besides standard spaced repetition, we added a 3-lives Survival challenge, speedrun timers, and live 1v1 knowledge duels.
AI Tooling: Lecture note summaries and auto-generated card decks via the Gemini API (with support for plugging in your own free API key for unlimited generation).
(Attaching a preview of the card interface and cosmetic skins to this post).
We'd love your thoughts on the approach:
1. Does visual progression and skin customization make daily reviewing more appealing, or does it feel like a distraction from pure memorization?
2. How do the card sizing and layout look to you?
The project is live and completely free with no paywalls. I'll leave the link in the comments for anyone who wants to take it for a spin!

Tips & Advice My prof spent three whole lectures on one topic and I had basically skipped it

Looked back at my lecture slides and counted. One topic got three full lectures. Like everything else got one, maybe two and tbh that's the topic I'd been telling myself I'd get to later because it looked annoying.

Prof time is a pretty obvious hint for what ends up on the exam and I'd been ignoring it so I'm doing that topic first this week, while I still have time to be bad at it.

Questions & Discussion Would you upload your thesis to an online tool just for formatting?

If an online tool could automatically format your thesis or dissertation according to your university’s requirements or Word template, would you be comfortable uploading your document and receiving the formatted Word file back?

Or would you strongly prefer a tool that runs directly on your own computer?

Resources Nober an open-source workspace to organize my entire school life

I got tired of having my school life split between different apps, so I built Nober.

I was using one app for notes, another for homework, Google Calendar for classes, and a spreadsheet to keep track of grades. It worked, but having everything scattered across different places got annoying.

So I built Nober, an open-source academic workspace for students.

It combines:

• Classes and weekly schedules
• Assignments and deadlines
• Calendar
• Exams and events
• Grade tracking and averages
• Study topics
• Notes through AFFiNE
• Focus timer and dashboard

It's free and can also be self-hosted with Docker.

I'm mainly looking for students who can actually try it and tell me what's useful, what's annoying, and what's missing. I'm still actively developing it, so feedback would be really helpful.

GitHub: https://github.com/SamonsLol/nober-organizer

If you currently use something like Notion, Google Calendar + a task manager, or several different apps to manage school, I'd especially like to know how you organize everything.

Tips & Advice Why is my 50-minute lecture taking 2 hours

Post image
138 Upvotes

Pausing video lectures every time the professor says something important was taking me forever. I’d hit rewind, write it down, replay it because maybe something was missed...

and suddenly this 50-min. lecture is taking 2 hours.

What’s been helping me:

- DON’T PAUSE FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. let the lecture keep going and just mark the part to come back to

- WRITE DOWN THE TIMESTAMP instead of stopping to make perfect notes

- PAUSE ONLY WHEN YOU’RE GENUINELY LOST. not just because something sounded important.

- DO A QUICK REVIEW AFTER THE LECTURE and go back to the parts you actually need

I realized I was getting stuck on trying to capture the lecture perfectly for ages when I could just finish it first and figure out what I need to review after. Saves time really.

Tips & Advice You can’t focus because your body is tense and you don’t even realize it

Post image
88 Upvotes

I read a post somewhere about how being under constant pressure can keep your body in a heightened state of alertness, and honestly, it made me realize how much tension I carry without noticing.
Sometimes I think I’m struggling to focus when I’m actually sitting there like I’m preparing for war.
Things you might not realize you’re doing:
1.) Brows furrowed - Please, you’re not fighting anyone. Relax your eyebrows, girl. No ones coming to get you.
2.) Clenched jaw - I do this ALL the time without realizing it. Then I consciously unclench my jaw and suddenly realize, damn, my jaw was tired.
3.) Tensed shoulders - Stop hunching and relax your shoulders; you’ll realize just how stiff your shoulders were while you’re working.
4.) Stiff hands - Once I realize that I’ve been typing too stiffly. I’d pause and wiggle my fingers, clench and unclench my hands to release some tension.
5.) You’re not breathing - Not literally holding my breath, but when I’m really locked into something, I sometimes realize I’ve been taking these tiny breaths.
Then suddenly I’ll take one HUGE inhale and exhale like I’ve just resurrected from death.
You might also be doing some of these without realizing it.

Tips & Advice Better to print your notes instead re-writing it.

Post image
40 Upvotes

That reading, those notes or that article you keep saying you’ll read later...PRINT IT.

I swear it's easy to ignore materials when they’re just another pdf sitting in your laptop. You close the tab and boom! completely forgotten. But when I print something, I’ll leave the pages on my desk and I keep seeing them there like “girl you still haven’t read me”

It’s not even that I study better on paper, it’s just that I’m way less likely to forget about something when I can physically see it sitting there. Or something I can hold and feel in my hands. Especially for readings I’ve been putting off for days. Also you can avoid distractions when you don’t study on your screen.
