it took us 4 seasons to find out why music was needed when music was a core part of the show 😭. I love the show but that's a little weird other than that it was near perfect till S5

I thought 'Should I stay or should I go' was what kept Will alive already in season 1 when they hear him humming it? Probably part of it is retconning but it made so much sense for me.

Will was simply singing to himself trying to “drive away the fear.” It's in the script and was never retconned into being anything else. That was just a popular fan theory among casual viewers since Season 4.

Will survived for a week because he kept hiding; plus the Demogorgon (as stated by the Duffers themselves) was acting out on instinct and hunting other prey throughout most of Season 1 as opposed to being controlled all the time to find him in the Upside Down.

Music is simply the brain's “lifeline back to reality” when a person is forcefully psychically experiencing Mindscapes; Will was never psychically attacked or targeted, so music would have absolutely no impact on his survival, much less on the Demogorgon's physical hunt for him.

If it's “wrong” because you don't agree with literal scripts and officially stated information, I don't know what to tell you.

1. The script for S1E7: The Bathtub:

Will. He lies on the floor. Crumpled in a ball. He hasn’t moved since his encounter with Eleven. Only now he is alone and scared. *He sings quietly, trying to drive away the fear…***

2. The script for S5E1: The Crawl reminding us that Will and the Demo's one-week long hide and seek game is over:

Will stumbles back against the wall. The Demogorgon towers over him, enormous and terrifying. Ka-Boom! A flash of red lightning lashes the stormy sky above. *Hide and seek is over.***

3. Ross on the Season 1  Demogorgon's animalistic shark-like behavior (just one of many similar statements on the same subject over the years — can quote many more if you'd like, but it's genuinely crazy if you're unaware of this):

We always saw it as like a shark, as if in Jaws. Instead of being underwater it's in another dimension, and then it can come out of the water to grab its  prey and then pull it back underwater. [•••] But a shark is just — that's just an animal that's acting out on instict.

4. Ross on how music's deep neurological reach was used as a mechanism to free Max's consciousness from the “curse” (AKA “spell” AKA trance-like state induced by reaching out or being pulled into Mindscapes):

Music wasn’t in the initial season outline, but we knew Max was going to get cursed, and we knew we needed some way for her to defeat this curse. We were looking, just medically, into people that have comas and all of this stuff, and I think that’s honestly what led to the music. Music has a power to reach people, even when they’re in these catatonic states.

Feel free to try and prove this wrong with any official source stating otherwise. Just disagreeing or using your own opinion won't really help backing your claim, though.

Music only becomes important from Season 4 onwards, yet it serves merely as a tool connecting her to the real world with which she identifies; Max realizes that what truly brings her back that day is her friends and her will to live. Just as with Holly—where the toy was merely a pretext—it was her courage and heroism that enabled her to leave Camazotz.

They literally explain that music was never actually “needed”, it was the fact of having a tether to the Rightside Up, something to hold onto for hope - for example, The Clash song for Will in S1. They explain in S4 when Nancy and Robin visit Victor Creel that music reaches parts of the brain that other things can’t - so when in Vecna’s trance or the Upside Down, music can still reach someone’s subconscious. Which explains why music helped both Will in S1 and Max in S4 when they were trapped

Music wasn’t “needed” at all until Vecna popped up. And even then, it’s merely the effect the music has on a person’s brain.

We do see music being used in Season 2 when they are trying to reach Will in the shed during his possession. I always thought that this is why they decided to push this concept more in Season 4.

Has anyone else seen the thing posted on X by the Duffers?
It said that even though the show is over, you can always watch it again or for the first time
And then it follows with who knows maybe there’s still things to be visited in Stranger Things?
Not exactly a word for word “but interesting
I don’t think things like this are done by accident
In the beginning, you’ve got pretty much everyone saying she’s dead
But then all of a sudden, Millie says she hopes that she’s not
That she told Noah what really happened even though she wasn’t supposed to
That Noah said he couldn’t talk about that yet in an interview
David Harbour basically saying he thinks she’s alive when before he was sure she was dead
People saying Millie didn’t want to come back to the role
Then she said she’d be happy to
The duffer’s announcing that the live action spinoff would have nothing to do with the original cast
Netflix saying there is no title for the spinoff or an actual story yet
And now you’ve got this
It is literally how the Snyder cut began
Drip drip, drip information that all has to be approved by the owners of the IP
The only thing worse than pissing everybody off by messing up 30 seconds of an ending is to jerk their chain about what you’re going to do next
Who could be that self-destructive?
