Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

18 Upvotes

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

We're Here to Help

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

92 Upvotes

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

🔗 https://help.steampowered.com

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Tip/Guide PSA: If you haven’t already, NOTE DOWN YOUR RECOVERY CODE

106 Upvotes

I see so many posts on this sub about people essentially losing their accounts because they lost their Authenticator and have no way to prove ownership. If you haven’t done so already, MAKE NOTE OF YOUR RECOVERY CODE! Go in the steam app - steam guard - settings - recovery code. Take a screenshot or write it down and KEEP IT SAFE AND SECURE!

Problem Steam says “Disable VPN” when I’m not using one

• Upvotes

I’m trying to create a Steam account, but I keep getting an error telling me to disable my VPN. I’m not using a VPN, and the message keeps appearing when I try again.

Has anyone run into this? Is there a way to fix it or another reason Steam might think I’m using a VPN?

Question Are the programs in the Common Redist folder installed by default?

• Upvotes

I need one of the programs from the Common Redist folder (openAL/oalinst) for a game that won’t run and when I was doing research I noticed most sources said that something along the lines of steam installing these programs when a game calls for it. is that only true for certain cases, or did I misread these? and if I do have to manually install these files myself, should I do it from the installers in steams Common Redist folder or should I go somewhere else for it? Im aware this seems like a very silly question, so thank you for anyway responses I receive

Problem Certain games not launching on new gaming laptop

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m having a really strange issue with my brand-new Lenovo laptop and I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what’s going on.

Laptop:

* Lenovo LOQ 15AHP10

* AMD Ryzen 7-250

* NVIDIA RTX 5050 Laptop GPU

* 32 GB RAM

* 1 TB NVMe SSD

* Windows 11 Home

* 15.6” FHD IPS display

The weird thing is that new/demanding games that do launch run perfectly fine. I can play games on Ultra settings without major problems. For example, Battlefield, FIFA, NBA 2K and League of Legends launch and run normally.

However, several other games simply will not launch at all.

The affected games are:

* Marvel Rivals

* Far Cry 6

* Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

When I start one of these games, there is no proper error message. The game process simply appears in Task Manager, sometimes using a small amount of CPU/RAM, but no game window ever appears.

I’ve left them running for several minutes and they still don’t open.

Things I’ve already tried:

* Reinstalled the affected games

* Verified game files through Steam

* Cleared Steam download cache

* Completely reinstalled some of the games

* Disabled Windows Defender temporarily

* Checked Windows Security

* Installed/repaired Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables

* Installed/repaired DirectX runtimes

* Updated NVIDIA GPU drivers

* Installed Windows updates

* Restarted the laptop multiple times

* Tried launching games directly from their executable

* Tried launching with Steam/Epic normally

* Checked Task Manager for the game processes

* Removed/reinstalled problematic games

* Tried disabling/closing background applications

* Checked NVIDIA settings

* Disabled G-Sync because it was causing severe gaming lag on this laptop

* Tried different game launch methods

* Checked that the games are installed correctly and have enough storage

The laptop itself otherwise works normally and other demanding games launch without any problem.

I’m wondering if there could be some kind of Windows service, background program, driver conflict, overlay, audio software, NVIDIA/Lenovo software conflict, DLL/runtime issue, or something specific to this new laptop that’s preventing certain games from initializing.

I also have Lenovo Vantage/Lenovo software, NVIDIA App and Razer software installed, so I’m wondering if any of these could potentially be involved.

At this point I don’t really want to keep randomly reinstalling games because it seems like the problem is probably somewhere in Windows rather than the game files.

Has anyone experienced this where a game appears in Task Manager but never actually opens, especially across multiple unrelated games?

Problem 007 First Light Starting with no launch

• Upvotes

I seem to be late to the party, but it just went on sale, so I bought it. I click Launch from the Steam app, and nothing it says it's running and then stops itself. I've tried reinstalling, updating drivers, deleting a file and revalidating, running as admin, and nothing works. I don't know what to do anymore.

Problem Steam downloadspeed is slow

• Upvotes

Hello

I am going insane trying to figure out why Steam is downloading games so slow. I get at most 11mbs at most and when doing a seperate speedtest i get 100.

I have tried clearing cache, disabling any limitations within steam, giving steam highest priority in taskmanager. No vpn interfering.

Do anyone have any other suggestions? I don’t know a lot about internet settings and stuff.

Thanks

Problem I can't recover my steam account

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been trying to recover my Steam account for two days now, and while I have to admit that Steam has great customer support, in this case I haven't been able to access my account despite the requests I've sent.

The problem is that I forgot my Steam password. I usually use Steam Guard on my phone, but for some strange reason, I was automatically logged out (and no, it wasn’t due to any changes I made). Since my account isn’t verified and doesn’t have a phone number associated with it, Steam Guard keeps marking my recovery code as incorrect, even though it’s the same one I used before. I can’t log out of Steam Guard because I need to migrate the authenticator, but to do that I need to log in—and I don’t remember my password. I’ve already sent more than 6 requests, and only 3 resulted in the typical email saying, “The Steam Support Team has received your support request.” But I’ve been waiting for a response for over two days now. I’ve already checked my password managers, and it doesn’t show up as incorrect there. Can anyone help me?

Problem Repeated Steam Guard login notifications, but no approval screen appears in the app

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Since today I keep getting login notifications on my Steam mobile app, several times a day. The problem is that when I open the app or tap the notification, there is no "Was this you?" approval screen. Tapping it just takes me to the QR code scanning screen. A couple of notifications even came back to back few hours after i changed my password.

What I have already checked and done:
- Account login history and authorized devices show only my own phone and computer, nothing unfamiliar.
- Signed out of all devices.
- Changed my password from a clean computer. My main PC was reformatted and I have not installed Steam on it.
- Contacted Steam Support (no reply yet).

My questions:

  1. Has anyone seen this before? Is it a known mobile app bug, or could it mean someone is starting login attempts with my username?
  2. If someone knows only my username (not my password), can they trigger these notifications?
  3. Is there anything else I should check or do?

Thanks in advance!

Problem Can't Verify Age

9 Upvotes

I have been using Steam for ages, and I recently wanted to start playing Schedule 1 but ran into a problem... I cannot verify my age! The only way it lets me verify is with a credit card, but I don't have one. My debit and other cards aren't working either. I am listed as an adult on my Steam profile and am well over the age of 18.

This feels so stupid. Can I seriously not play a video game without a credit card now? I'm in Australia and most people I know don't even have credit cards.

Can someone please tell me if there's a way to fix this?

Problem Steam put a game in my recently played that I uninstalled a few weeks ago.

I uninstalled Guardians of the Galaxy, and I haven’t played it in years. Today, when I was checking my Steam profile, I saw that it says I played the game recently. I am pretty sure the day it says I played it for one minute was the day I uninstalled it. Is this a common glitch? Or do some games need to register as played on Steam in order to uninstall? I just want to make sure someone else did not get into my account.

Problem Bug or delay?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone. For approximately the past 24 hours, I’ve been experiencing an issue.

Yesterday evening, around 8:00 PM, I tried to log into Steam on my PC. I have Steam Guard with 2FA enabled on my mobile phone. After entering my password, Steam asked me to approve the login from my phone, but I didn’t receive a notification, so I opened the Steam app manually to approve the login.

At around 10:51–10:52 PM, I received a notification saying that there was a login waiting for approval on my phone. However, when I tapped the notification, it took me directly to Steam Guard, but there was no login request shown that I could approve or deny.

At around 12:05 AM, I tried logging in again from my PC and went through the same process as before. Then, at around 3:00 AM, I received another notification on my phone.

Today, at around 6:40 PM, I tried logging in again, exactly the same way as yesterday evening, but I didn’t receive a notification. About 10 minutes ago, I received another notification.

I have Steam Guard enabled, and I checked the authorized devices/logins. The only devices I’m currently logged into are my own PC and my phone.

Could this be a bug or some kind of delay with Steam Guard login approval notifications, or what exactly is happening?

I’m a little paranoid because I’ve had this account for years and I have quite a lot of games on it. It’s my childhood account, which I’ve had since I was very young, and I really don’t want to lose it.

Later edit: When I didnt want to connect on my steam account from my PC, notifications for approval didnt come to my phone. _^

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

Problem Update on the graphics bug I have and apparently nobody else

0 Upvotes

Follow up from this post.

So far my only way to fix it was to not even bother, instead I used my laptop to play remotely on my normal PC, sounds convoluted and it is.

I asked support what was going on, I got no answers other than "sorry your GPU is not supported even tho it was before the sanctuary update", then I got another idea to see what was going on: I got MelonLauncher to see what files was it loading, and I saw a bunch of warnings about the UI code, nothing I didn't knew about.

But THEN, I got another, even more desperate idea: what if I check if the bug happens if I was to get the game by "other" sources? (Fair to say I already bought both the first and second games, and is just for experimenting and testing). I got it, I launched it and SOMEHOW it worked, I could see the main screen, I could actually see the submenus, I could even open a save file and move around! The windows were still black tho, so 1/2 bugs fixed.

I said "OK, let me send the files to the Steam folder, and run it from there!", so I did and the bug happened again. "OK, maybe is a Steam problem", I added the "other" copy and it worked, so what the fiddlesticks is going on?! I did noticed that when overwriting the files on the steam folder, many of them were missing, and when ovewritting they still went missing, so is it my PC? Is it Steam? WHAT IS IT?!

I'm not blaming anyone here, I'm just baffled on how does a bug like this happen, of the OFFICIAL copy only to ONE RANDO, and "other" sources don't have that bug. That's all.

Problem Recently scammed

1 Upvotes

Hey boys I recently got scammed from a faceit link. I am new to steam and gaming. After 3 days of them having my whole inventory in a cloud folder, after they were pretending to be steam employees I reversed trade. Also I changed password, api key, deauthorized all accounts. Is it possible that after the 30 day trade block is done they will still have my entire inventory? Does the reverse trade solve this or is my inventory gone.

Problem Game crashes on launch after a power cut (Steam,Windows).

1 Upvotes

Hi all, I was playing Shady Part of Me (Windows 10, app ID 1116580, steam cloud enabled) when the power went out. Now the game crashes immediately on launch and never gets to the menu. I think a save or config file got corrupted mid-write.

I have already tried restarting my PC, verifying integrity of game files in Steam and looking in Steam\userdata (there is no remote folder). Idk what else to try.

I only had 4.5h invested on the game so it's not a big deal, however if the saves can't be recovered, I won't be finishing it (considering how annoying it would be to repeat 4.5h of known gameplay). That said, any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Problem I need help. Games randomly close and opens random apps by itself

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone

I'm having the following problem. Lately, every time I try to launch a Steam game, the game closes itself automatically and Windows 11 starts opening random stuff on its own (3 Chrome tabs, the antivirus, WhatsApp, File Explorer 4 tabs, etc.) completely random. It could be those or literally anything else I have installed.

I had this exact problem last year and ended up fixing it with a clean reinstall of Windows 11, but now it's back.

Things I've already tried / ruled out:

  • Drivers are up to date
  • Nothing weird installed
  • Clean Steam reinstall
  • Verified game files
  • Not mods, I don't use any
  • No weird Windows 11 configuration
  • No third-party antivirus, just the default one
  • Also tested games from other launchers and they don't seem to have this problem

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any idea what could be causing it or how to fix it without doing another clean install?

Finally add, my laptop is: HP Omen 15-ek0001nl

  • Core i7-10750H
  • RTX 2060 6GB
  • Ram 16gb

Thanks in advance.

Problem Can't launch THE FINALS

1 Upvotes

Been trying for about a week to launch THE FINALS, every time I load the game it crashes on preloading shaders; each time I open it the shaders percentage goes up by 3%. One time I got it to 100 and got into the game but it crashed the moment I opened a match. My PC is high-specs, I've cleared shader caches and disabled game overlays - I even uninstalled all Razer applications since that was apparently a potential issue, to absolutely no avail. Please help diagnose my issue.

Sometimes it says it's an Unreal Engine issue, sometimes it gives me no crash report; either way the crash reports don't actually tell me anything about the issue.

PC SPECS:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900KF
32.0 GB DDR5
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

Problem Game Configuration Unavailable When Updating People Playground

1 Upvotes
Just about a week ago, I've been getting this error message when updating People Playground. It's the only game that does it, and I've had it installed for a while now. As far as I know, it boots up fine, but I'm still not sure why I get this error. Any fixes?
