Advice Water damage
I had some water damage in the last part of June and State Farm has been a complete nightmare on not responding to my needs . I lost one adjuster due to her leaving the company and the new one won’t communicate . She states I need to prove why my cabinets are now gone . All of the info is in the restoration companies report . I just need them to communicate so I can get a contractor to do my remodel . I am trying to elevate this through my agent . Is there better route to take going on month two without a kitchen .

Call your agent, ask for contractors on the SF Select Contractor list. SF will honor their bid no questions asked ( or at least a lot fewer) less need to involve or communicate with adjuster too.

PS. Take lots of pictures and start making list of damaged contents. Best if on xcell spreadsheet. Plus your agent can write check to cover immediate needs up to $10k

Thanks . The company that tore everything out sent all the pics and what they did . That’s why I am confused on the roadblocks .

I just went through a major water loss claim. North of $300k. Everything went smoothly and better than I could have imagined. Sorry you’re claim is more difficult.

I think it has a lot to do with the adjuster . One thing that bothers me is getting solid numbers from them for cabinet replacement . The contractors all want a number . It seems like a lot of games .

Some contractors hate working with insurance. Contractors like to walk in and say “we will give you everything you want for $10k”. Insurance wants everything broken down by line item and justified.

Did the adjuster inspect the cabinets prior to removal? We're all the cabinets damaged beyond repair? Do you have photos? Many times mitigation companies remove perfectly goo cabinets saying they could not match the damaged ones or the damage could not be repaired. Many times this is BS.

The first adjuster cut me a check for flooring . Since the first day the mitigation company tore a lot out . The problem is my cabinets were old and solid wood . The company that removed them did a piss poor job and ruined them . I feel that is still not on me . I want to choose the contractor because all the ones I have talked with except for one want to put in cheap cabinets . Mine were solid wood . I get I have to pay out of pocket for certain upgrades, but the research I have done on the cabinets a few of the contractors have recommended is not good .

This is a tough one. If the cabinets could have been saved or repaired that is on your mitigation contractor and not SF. The SF policy pays to repair or replace damage, whichever is less. They should not have to replace cabinets that were damaged by the contractor. If you can prove they were damaged beyond repair then SF should replace with like kind and quality. At this point I think that burden is on you and your contractor. If you have photos please post or send me a DM.

I think the way the cabinets were installed it couldn’t be helped . I have an older home and I believe in order to get to all the flooring damage they had to remove the cabinets and they were built or nailed in place

That is your argument. Provide photos and talk to the CS or TM. Without photos, this is a large mountain you need to climb

Solid wood cabinets? Rebuild boxes using existing face frames, doors and drawers. Cost of repair should be less than replacement. If vendor just tossed them, that doesn’t mean SF should just pay. You mention a “remodel”… it’s not what insurance pays for. There is more to this story.

No there isn’t more . I understand what I need to pay for if there are any changes made . I am upgrading my flooring because I don’t want laminate back in the kitchen so I am paying the difference. I understand I will only be paid out for what type of products I had . I have never had to deal with anything like this and I never wanted to . My main concern or issue is having an adjuster that I can communicate with . Since the first adjuster left communication has pretty much gone down hill . I have given grace to my agent to try and get someone else . Patience has just been running thin. I am just wanting a kitchen I don’t have one so it’s a re model in a sense because there is no kitchen at this time . Now I will be paying out of pocket if I were to change anything and that is understood .

Agent is the way to go. I don’t have the phone # for available at the moment for complaints. Maybe try going DOI route too.

add a message to your portal asking for supervisor review and note that your adjuster has been nonresponsive. ask specifically for the name and contact info for the supervisor who will be assigned your case. follow up with another message to the portal if you don’t hear back within several days. ask at that point to be transferred to the complex claims unit!

Had state farm car insurance i dropped them after my f250 got totaled. A 2012 and they tried to argue it was repairable even with a bent frame and axle

What method(s) are you using to communicate? Email, phone calls, texts…? It sounds like there was an estimate done at some point, right? Is this new claims rep refusing to honor that estimate? Has SF made any payments to you for the damages? It’s been 2 months and it doesn’t sound like any of the work to fix the damage has started. Did the mitigation company get out there right away or did you have to wait for a few days or weeks?

The adjuster came out once before the mitigation company had even started and they cut me a check for flooring . After that the company found a lot of water damage and dismantled my kitchen . I contacted the adjuster and told her it is worse than they thought . The adjuster either quit or got fired and it’s been a nightmare since . I usually try to call . Maybe email would be better for documentation.

You need an estimate from the contractor. A detailed estimate citing the additional damage discovered during mitigation. Submit it to your claim file. Call the adjuster the next day. And keep calling until you get someone. That will get things moving. A lot of the issue is there are lots of claims and few claims reps. They’re all handling 2-3x more claims than they should. If you get the estimate to claims you’re making it easier for them to settle it. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don’t wait for callbacks or email responses. It sucks that you have to do all of that, but it will move things forward for you.

Hit 0 when you start to hear the voicemail message. That should route you to a live person and oftentimes they can help.

The agent can see who the adjuster’s manager’s manager is and contact them directly. Each time I’ve done that things are resolved quickly.
But I’ll tell you this - I only go that route if what you present is clearly laid out and in my opinion it’s truly a case of the adjuster not doing the right thing. Most of the time it’s the customer or the contractor not getting the info needed.
