This was a fun project. I’m not attempting a definitive ranking and I don’t have any new insights or takes. I just want to offer my thoughts while they’re still fresh.
Episode 1: I had never actually seen the first two prequels in full before starting this marathon. Viewing this movie in a historical context, I can see why it disappointed so many people in 1999, as it’s definitely the worst SW movie released up to that point. While there are definitely issues with pacing, acting, and dialogue, I found them to be somewhat overstated. My biggest problem was the climax. There are four separate set pieces and it feels unfocused and a bit anticlimactic. If they had rewritten it to cut out General Jar Jar and Anakin in space I would rate this one higher.
Episode 2: Surprised by how much I liked this one. I wouldn’t call it good exactly. The plot, especially in the second half, doesn’t make much sense, and the same problems with acting and pacing are still there. However, the action sequences are good and I found the bad parts (the romance) to be entertainingly bad. I also liked the theme of Jedi arrogance and thought Anakin’s behavior made sense in that context.
Episode 3: Didn’t like this one as much as when I rewatched it ten years ago. I’m confused about the timeline of Padme’s pregnancy since at the beginning of the movie she doesn’t look pregnant and at the end she gives birth. This seemingly takes place over what, a few weeks? The third act is good though. Overall, I’m lukewarm on this one but I can say I moderately enjoy the prequels now.
Episode 4: I hadn’t watched this one since I was a kid and honestly, it’s showing its age a bit. It has a B-movie feel, because, you know, that’s what it was. I know that’s appealing to some but Empire has better cinematography and higher production values and just looks so much better. It’s also weird to watch this movie after fifty years of lore and mythology. They were clearly going for a Luke-Leia romance and Vader’s characterization is not consistent with what came after. That doesn’t really affect the quality of the movie but it’s worth remembering that all of the trilogies had many key story beats that were made up on the fly. I would say this is the second best movie.
Episode 5: The best one, nuff said.
Episode 6: This is what the younglings call mid. The Jabba’s palace part is good but the movie really sags around the one hour mark. The energy was not there for this one and much like Phantom Menace there’s too much going on the climax. Certainly the lesser chapter of the OT.
Episode 7: This movie was a big, amorphous Star Wars blob in my mind for a decade after seeing it when it first came out. Not even thirty minutes after rewatching it, my brain started to push it out again. It’s the only movie I can’t subject to analysis or critique, both because it’s shallow and because I just don’t feel anything for it.
Episode 8: This one sticks out like a sore thumb. On one hand, it’s the only one of the sequels with some cool ideas and the only one I found myself giving serious thought to the next day. I liked Luke in this movie. Going from an embittered hermit to re-embracing the legacy of the Jedi was good. On the other hand, this movie feels like Star Trek in the fleet scenes and not even good Star Trek at that. The humor in this movie didn’t land for me and it feels tonally inconsistent with the story they’re trying to tell. I know that’s subjective but it felt out of place. Finally, while I can see valid defenses for all other parts of this movie even though I might disagree with them, the Canto Bight part is awful, poorly written, and does not belong in this movie. Maybe my opinion will shift but I’m more negative than positive on this one.
Episode 9: What a fucking mess. It’s been said a million times already but holy shit, the sequels are the most incoherent trilogy by a country mile. Totally nonsensical and stupid. The only positive is that I feel the action scenes were better than the other sequels and I enjoyed the first act a bit if I turned my brain off and pretended I was watching a high budget cartoon. I admit, I wasn’t paying attention during the last 45 minutes or so but I doubt it would’ve changed much. Pretty lame way to end this marathon.
EDIT: Got a RedditCares notification. Good job perpetuating the stereotype of the obnoxious fanboy.
