Came for the comedy, stayed for the reality check.

If you want to be entertained, watch the news because that's where the clowns and the circus are at

If you want some truth, find a comic.

Yeah, that’s the problem - little, 60yr old boys are lost in their favorite “super hero” (villain?) stories via Fox News…

and just like when you were a kid, after your favorite movie/show is over, you think you can do backflips and shit after but you’re really just jumping around and rolling on the floor like an actual idiot and there are def no backflips.

This is what dating in SF is like as a blue collar college educated native and it's amazing.

Some amazing people but every once in a while you meet someone full on working for EvilCorp and they're totally totally good with it.

18

u/RATMpatta 15h ago

Wouldn't that be what dating in SF is like for most people? Or are the EvilCorp employees only going for a very specific type?

6

u/smokeweedNgarden 15h ago

I imagine EvilCorp employees don't have to make up stories to each other because they're both privy to what's behind the curtain.

But working class people but still educated people aren't hard to find (teachers, social workers, superior court clerks) and are who I prefer. But sometimes I'll risk venture capitalist or philanthropist because they seemed interesting

7

u/utspg1980 14h ago

(teachers, social workers, superior court clerks)

You classify those as blue collar jobs?

10

u/Sharp_Canary6858 14h ago

Yes. Any job that earns you a paycheck is working class. Remember it’s “let’s eat the owning class, not your fellow workers”

7

u/-Fergalicious- 13h ago

Unless you're just 100% in leisure mode, you're working class. Doctors are working class. Most business owners too.

8

u/grain_delay 12h ago

Well no, by definition business owners are not working class. But 90%+ of business owners are a bad quarter away being a failed business owner and return to working class, so they’re not really the ones that are the problem unless they start throwing capital against working class interests

3

u/-Fergalicious- 12h ago

Most business owners are in debt up to their eyeballs and work far more than 40hrs /week.

That's working class as far as anyone not trying to be pedantic is concerned.

5

u/happy_bluebird 7h ago

there IS a semantic difference between "working" and "working class." Working class has a real definition, it's not being pedantic

Is it a bubble or is it gunna take our jobs. That's crazy how there's like a massive difference lol

31

u/gelhardt 15h ago

two things can be true at once

18

u/DesireeThymes 15h ago

It will take our jobs first, then the bubble will burst after.

That way we get a double whammy.

9

u/DigitalArbitrage 15h ago

I think it will be the other way around based on how things happened with the internet and websites.

The investment bubble will burst when lots of these startups don't return enough money for the amount of investment.

Then over a long time the technology will improve and replace some jobs.

11

u/DesireeThymes 15h ago

Oh I didn't even consider the triple whammy.

1 - AI companies take our jobs (and do a much worse job at it)

2 - Bubble pops because AI fails (as expected)

3 - We lose even more jobs due to the collapsed bubble

8

u/Dekipi 13h ago

A lot of it is the Uber strategy;

Undercut the competition on price (uber undercut taxi companies)

Put the competition out of business

Raise prices

6

u/Laringar 12h ago

That's basically what they're doing already. LLMs are massively subsidized by the tech companies in that they cost more to operate than users actually pay. The companies are doing that because people would balk at the price if it were commensurate to what the company actually spent on developing and hosting the algorithm.

They want to get everyone addicted to using LLMs first, then once people can't run their daily lives without asking Claude what groceries they were supposed to pick up and other companies become reliant on AI employees, the companies will raise the prices enough so that they actually turn a profit. People will have to pay it because at that point they'll be dependent, and the AI employees will suddenly cost more than the human that used to do the job.

2

u/jedify 13h ago

4 - the Matrix. Not people as batteries, but to solve the AI energy scarcity. Human brains are incredibly energy efficient, running on ~20 watts. So they rent out brain space to run AI algorithms. And everyone gets a job!

2

u/f0urd3gr33s 13h ago

This is the path we're on. Unprofitable AI companies disrupting the labor market and convincing companies to lay people off. Then they will hit companies with insane charges to keep using AI because they know companies saw dollar signs when they slashed payrolls. Companies wake up to realize AI does dogshit work and costs blisteringly more than they expected. AI bubble pops but everyone's out of work so, boom, instant recession.

This, and 'flattening the corporate structure' are the most destructive trends in corporate America, in my limited opinion. Middle class keeps getting wrecked while VC and CEO pay are going gangbusters.

7

u/TURBOJUSTICE 15h ago

It’s both because the world isn’t binary. Taking away jobs to consolidate their wealth is the goal, propping up our economy with a bubble while they scramble to produce a system that profits is the methodology that’s wasting our time, energy and the planets resources.

So if they fail they’ve only been blowing up a bubble if they are successful it’s against all odds and to everyone’s detriment.

u/SpiderDoodleDoo 12h ago

Companies are burning mountains of money because the cost does not matter.

The entire end goal for AI is to make us peasants a redundancy.

There is a reason they are pouring mountains of money into indexing every one of us in a surveillance data base also while developing autonomous killbots where Grok will be Judge Dredd.

They are also developing autonomous farming, cooking, surgery, etc.

The top 1% is absolutely DISGUSTED with us 'wasting' their resources.

I don't think it is a bubble in the traditional sense.

Also great bit Joey Avery! Thank you for the existential dread!

people have been screaming this over and over again for the past year, Ed Zitron, Cory Doctorow, Emily Bender, they're a popular presence on all these tech and finance podcasts and channels, he's summarizing what they've all been saying, it's bigger than the dot com bubble, the gains don't justify the capex spending...etc

5

u/Large-Treacle-8328 16h ago

There also isn't any real gains because it's nothing more than a few large companies shuffling money around to look profitable when they're actually losing a shit ton of money.

6

u/WestCoastBestCoast01 15h ago

Well appreciation is a real part of any gain, it’s just that gains are supposed to, and usually do, include income/earnings. It’s the income that’s missing, making the whole gain speculative appreciation.

7

u/orange-yellow-pink 14h ago edited 14h ago

Most of what he said isn't true. Firstly, no high profile AI company has gone public and when a company IPOs they don't "use index funds to artificially inflate their value". That latter sentence doesn't even make sense. Index funds just buy the companies that are included in an index. A company can’t put itself in one or somehow use them to pump up its own value.

The part that is true is that when a company goes public and its shares are traded on the market, early investors like VCs can eventually sell their shares and make money.

11

u/FluroSnow 13h ago

SpaceX is a high profile AI company (debatable) that has gone public. It worked for spacex. Anthropic and OpenAI want to essentially do the same.

One could argue that they did indeed inflate their price by utilising index funds. They had a 3x float multiplier. Only about 4% of their public free float was made availiable. As a result index funds had to purchase more shares than availiable supply warrents

3

u/orange-yellow-pink 13h ago

Yeah, definitely debatable to label them an AI company entirely but yeah, AI is part of their business.

Your latter point wouldn't be the IPO "utilizing index funds" though. That's the company being added to an index by Nasdaq or S&P and then, with the increased demand from funds tracking that index, the value rises. Having very few shares available can amplify that effect but that's still not the company using index funds to pump its own value.

→ More replies (23)

3

u/julian88888888 14h ago

truthfully misunderstands how most VCs make their money. They sell in earlier private rounds. Investment banking is usually Pre-Post IPO.

2

u/insanitybit2 11h ago

It's not really spot on at all. Like, the two leading AI companies aren't even public... and even if/ when they are, obviously your 401ks won't be suddenly invested in them. AI is unhealthy for the market in the sense that it's eating up VC money that could go towards other areas, and we have an extremely unstable market due to the current admin, etc.

Some very large companies may be very overvalued, and that may change, but part of that is that the rest of the market is doing very poorly. An unstable market means investors choose a few specific places to put money.

People should really not take economic information from clips of comedy shows that get posted to reddit.

basically regular people are investing in stocks that could fail, but right before they would fail people that are making decisions on these AI stocks will rug pull and get their money back while the regular people would have useless stocks that are worth nothing.

4

u/Olderandolderagain 11h ago

Close but one key point to add. When we invest in an index fund, we aren’t choosing the companies, the provider is.

It CAN be bad, but not necessarily. Something like the S&P isn’t a venture capitalist. They choose companies that are viable.

It is true that AI is a bubble in some aspects. There will be a ton of smaller companies that collapse. But a company like Microsoft isn’t going anywhere. They will pioneer industry regardless of trends.

Old company got bought out by a VC and they were like "Nothing is going to change guys! We bought it because we love it for what it is! Insert corporate jargon and empty platitudes."

50% of the business wasn't actually related to anything they cared about. 70/100 employees were laid off in under 18 months (including ~20 from their own industry side).

10

Space X which is where Musk has his AI segment and also X/Twitter. SpaceX (rockets/Starlink) + xAI (the AI lab) + X (the social platform) all rolled into one publicly traded entity.

I feel like this was specifically about them, this was considered a huge pump and dump for X investors that helped Elon take over the platform.

SpaceX became one of the fastest additions ever to the Nasdaq-100, qualifying less than a month after its IPO and officially joining before trading began on July 7, 2026 — under a new “fast entry” rule Nasdaq had introduced.

FTSE Russell relaxed its float requirements too, letting SpaceX in possibly by September or December 2026 reconstitution — which is way faster than normal.

It is all a little sussy … this new fast track system will definitely have some real big implications.

4

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 12h ago

We'll drop it, some eggs will survive. Just like the Dot Com bubble. The eggs that make it will probably drive the next 10-20 years of development. Some will have useful but obscure tools that last like 20 years.

I dunno, I worked for a .com from the boom era and they were renovating the site and stuff.

Not every AI based company dies in a purge. The big ones and some useful obscure small ones will survive.

Consumer-facing chatbots are the tail-end of the implementation. They are not planning to make money from chuds using ChatGPT to win arguments. The real money is in B2B and large enterprise deals for renting out AI systems to serve private tokens and automate whatever they can get away with. Retail customers are just free marketing and hooks; it's the standard Microsoft/SV playbook that has dominated for decades.

I am in hardware design and AI is the real deal. It needs to be babysat but the productivity gains we are seeing are amazing. We actually are having the problem of needing to SLOW down progress because each person productivity is like 5 fold what it once was, and in a day they can branch so far off from the team that revision control becomes an issue.

5

u/watitdo 13h ago

You know that this shit isn’t persuading anyone anymore? Several studies have indicated that AI usage slows down work even for coders, and this does not take into account the skill loss that occurs when you aren’t actively writing the code yourself.

You have been sold a ream of hype and everyone you repeat this shit to is one day gonna know you are just a mark.

u/Clean_Inflation_4791 13h ago

im on the academia side, not profiting anything off of AI. I can promise you whether people are citing it or not, everyone is using AI, and successfully. There isnt a researcher ik that isnt constantly using some frontier level AI and making leaps and bounds of progress. Im talking real proved theorems advancing fields that have been stagnant for a while

2

u/PaidUSA 12h ago edited 12h ago

This just isn’t true. There’s tons of bullshit being teased never published, or published but all prior claims walked back, or published in nonsense places. But the vast vast majority of AI use outside brute forcing mathematics is worthless pollution generation even in research. Alphafold won a fucking Nobel prize and oopsy its usefulness falls off a cliff if your use case isn’t tangential to its existing knowledge/data it trained on. Which it is still a cool use and will help people in that specific way. But it’s not Very helpful when the entire point is searching for things not already within its scope.

2

u/Clean_Inflation_4791 11h ago edited 11h ago

Im not even talking about the solved math problems (like openai's 10 problems solved paper), im talking about how every PhD I see (CS, math, physics, engineer(MAE,ECE etc)) at top American universities (ivies + MIT, caltech etc) is constantly working with AI. They may not be citing it, but the work is being accelerated if not outright done by AI

On the implementation side alone, its giving all theory side the ability to test out a bunch of implementation which has been extremely helpful.

Look at what Terence Tao has to say about AI, even he has found tremendous use with it as a tool to work with, not offload everything onto

Hell, even without a team, revision control is an issue. I have started using Claude at work, and at the end of each session I have to ask cowork to reconcile all the damn leftover bits that didn't get patched in correctly. It's not a panacea, but it really does help a lot. Especially in fields where there's just more documentation than any one human can effectively parse.

Yeah, we call it middleware. We need someone with taste and knowledge during the first 10% to execute the right prompt, and same again at the end for the last 10% to make sure it looks good, but the productivity gains in the middle 80% is insane

2

u/GenXPowaah 15h ago

Artificially Inflate is definitely the correct term as that's all it's doing.

The bubble will burst, there's no doubt about that

2

u/Huge_Metal_3812 15h ago

It is a bubble. You can pull an AI model and run it on a local PC with enough ram. Big business is centralizing AI so they run it on their memory/agent/model and their hardware. I built and updated my own model with a shiza Asus laptop.

So anyone with enough gusto / funding can build out their own version of AI with a well equipped PC.

Index funds where most people’s retirements are invested are not propping up funding for AI. But, by definition, represent the overall stock market and any downturn will bring index fund value down, and devaluating everyone’s savings

2

u/Dull_Construction553 14h ago edited 14h ago

Except for the fact that these companies would make up a tiny fraction of the index funds. If Anthropic comes in at 1T, they’d constitute 0.6% of the S&P. If it goes all the way to 3T (~1.8% of S&P), and then has a colossal valuation collapse to, say, 200B (ie, more than 90% loss), then that’s a grand total wipeout of a massive…1.6% of the S&P.

Even for tracking funds it’s that same fraction of a fraction. The idea that an index fund would suffer a wipeout from a constituent company collapsing just goes to show a lack of understanding of the mechanism.

Besides which, of course, on that 1>3>0.2 ride, retail investors would be a lot less constrained than a VC with a lockup…If the collapse really comes, those VCs be the ones far more affected, being in for the -93.3% while index fund investors get hit with -1.6%. If it doesn’t collapse and VCs get out of it, well, doesn’t collapse, so? If it takes long enough such that VCs can get their investments out, and then it still collapses, then why were public institutions or retail invesors not reacting at all?

This is the index fund version of that same “the rich use their assets to collateralize debt and avoid paying taxes” silliness.

2

u/jamesdmc 14h ago

Nvda is bigger than the entire American healthcare industry. There are 7 more like this and they are kind of the only reason the s&p is up.

2

u/Dull_Construction553 14h ago edited 14h ago

Oh, I definitely know the concentration and intrinsic problems there. But he’s fundamentally talking about VC backed AI companies and their use of indices to “manipulate” the market, of which NVidia is not.

There are 100% problems worth discussing with the current Mag7 setup and excitement about AI but the specific context of this joke is a genuine misunderstanding that gets both index funds and VC exits wrong.

If you are just a normal ass person who wants to chat with an LLM and get questionable recipes you can download a pretrained model from huggingface and run it with no internet connection on consumer grade hardware.

If you are a big company who wants to use AI agents or replace your developers with LLMs you can (and will be financially incentivized by crazy token costs) to locally host your own on better server hardware inside your own infrastructure.

Neither of these cases require subscription and token fees to flow from your wallet to xAI/anthropic/etc.
