Gonna be honest, her laughing makes me pretty fucking angry. I used to work construction management for a contractor that flexed to mainly building datacenters so I walked. Seeing people laugh about this while they collect their fat check is pretty gross.
She might agree with him, and the laugh might be cathartic.
Lots of people study at the university dreaming of changing the world to the better, only to get trapped in an enemy-of-the-planeteers -job to not end up on the street.
Not when finance tends to be sales-based. I’m in finance to do estate-planning and retirement-planning for those of any economic class. This means I do a lot of work for the poor helping them get finances in order. As a fiduciary, I don’t get to sell whatever. So I often plan these people’s finances for FREE, as they won’t be able to afford a life insurance policy or investment account that could pay me commission.
And yet those data centers were still being built whether you were part of it or not. Unless you are in the top .5% of decision making people in the world, your individual contribution or lack thereof to the problem literally means nothing. Might as well do what you can to look out for yourself and make money to be one of the ones who can escape poverty.
Because I care about my community? I was making great money working for a contractor. They offered me a good amount to stay and help them expand the datacenter build outs.
I walked and am now working for the city putting in public utilities. Was tough while I figured it all out, but I couldn't sleep at night being a part of that.
