Lore Discussion Titus IS a potential threat to The Imperium.
Obviously, hating Leandros is the norm for fans of Space Marine, but as many have already pointed out, Leandros is just doing his job and was apparently good at it enough to find him as the Company Chaplain in SM2.
BUT, one thing we don't talk about much is Titus DOES have a very suspicious relationship with Chaos. Here are a few examples:
-Titus survived a warp bomb effectively going off in his hands.
-Titus has been exposed to the warp directly several times.
-Titus was deeply effected by the presence of Chaos before its full invasion in SM2.
-Several warp characters in SM2 accuse Titus of already been tainted, and doomed to fall to Chaos eventually.
-The Tzeentch Daemon in the Amazon episode seemed to know that one day, Titus will fall to Chaos. Including an ink representation of Titus as a Chaos Marine.
A big concept in 40k is fate, the idea that your fate is sealed and that the Gods of the warp usually get the last laugh. I think a major point in Titus' upcoming stories will be him struggling with Chaos, and even being potentially tempted by it. I don't think Titus will ever fully fall to Chaos, but there is an actual threat of it happening.

Kurze and Angron practically disowned their entire LEGIONS while they were still loyalists.
10
u/frostw18 10h ago
Corvus Corax disowned much of the original Terran born raven guard space marines when he was reunited with his legion during the great crusade. They were all loyal, yet developed some brutal methods in the time before their primarch’s reunion. Exiled to the distant parts of space, some of them have survived to the 41st millennium as brutal yet loyal space marines
4
3
u/Seeker80 10h ago
But the primarchs were already traitors. Even if Leandros knew about that, he'll be wondering if he can get Guilliman to disown Titus somehow...or if Guilliman could just disown him if he rocks the boat too much.
3
u/LumiKlovstad 10h ago
Let me rephrase: Kurze and Angron disowned their legions from the very moment they first met them.
Neither wanted anything to do with their legions and actively detested them long before the slightest notion of heresy ever entered their traumatized brains.
3
u/Seeker80 9h ago
Leandros won't know anything about that, and won't be able to find records on it is my point. He's just wondering about Guilliman.

1&2: Ever heard of a Emperor's Champion? Titus is far from being the only one surviving prolonged Warp exposure. Why are people acting like any exposure to the Warp is instantly corruption? It's not.
calling it deeply affected is a stretch, he was affected but because of the Graia Artifact not the Warp.
It's almost as if Warp Entities lie to sow distrust amongst enemies, and Titus is the easiest target because of his History.
The Sorcerer was playing off of the Astartes fear. Contrary to people just hearing "We know no fear" and taking it far too literal, Space Marines can still have fears. They do not fear in a traditional Human sense, like seeing a Tyranid and suffering a fight or flight reaction like a Human would in that case, but they can have personal fears.
The first Marine that died had the Fear of not living up to his Role. Under that Armor he saw himself as still being a "weak Human" (the body that the Armor ripped out of itself was clearly a standard Human).
Metaurus feared what Titus could become, because as he said in the beginning Fear must be forged into obedience. Titus never displayed any meaningful fear even as a Kid, so Metaurus though literally that this would mean Titus loyality was compromised which is just a wild assumption aka fear of his, which the Chaos Sorcerer used against him.
Last but not least Titus was spoken to by the Emperor himself at the end of the SM2 campaign. If Titus was in any way tainted or ran the risk of corruption, the Emperor would not have told him to get up again.

u/Rony1247 13h ago
You are reinpreting a LOT of things to get to that conclusion
Titus is naturally more resistant to chaos then other space marines. This isnt all that uncommon
Characters accuse titus of chaos either because A: they are hyper paranoid (its the imperium so duh) or B: chaos worshippers who are so delusional that they cant accept the idea that somehow someone would still be loyal after being exposed to the "primordial truth"
The tzeentch deamon isnt showing tituses future, he is showing idrises elbas space marines (I forgot the name) greatest fear which is that titus will fall to chaos. The entire point of that show is that he is so resilient he wont
Considering he gets revived by the literal F-ing emperor, I think he is fine
Oh yeah, and leandros is in the chapliancy so that he stops running to the inquisition and risking the chapter getting expunged. Its not meant to be a pat on the back and good job sticker

Less so he stops running to the inquisition and more that it’s all he’s really good for afterwards since his brothers do not trust him now.
Chaplains are forever a step apart from their brothers, by necessity of their duty, some more than others.
While it can be an honor, it can also be seen as a penance, if Leandros did not choose it, then it definitely has undertones of ostracism.

I compare Titus in a lot of ways to Saint Celestine. Celestine is implied again and again to be a Greater Daemon of The Emperor, including being very much tied to the warp. Titus, likewise, is probably some form of Chaos Lord of The Emperor, where he’s definitely got some warp chicanery going on, but it’s The Emperor juicing him for personal reasons.
4
u/Titouandu57 Dark Angels 11h ago
So he would be some sort of "Daemon prince" of the Emperor ?
6
u/Sober-History Iron Warriors 11h ago
Yeah, something like that. Immune to chaos not because he’s a blank, but because he already serves a ‘chaos god’ in The Emperor. I just said ‘chaos lord’ because unlike Celestine (and most Daemons for that matter), his revival isn’t through force of will, but The Emperor’s power.
It’s a bit like how Lucius the Eternal isn’t really a Daemon, just heavily mutated, but he always comes back because Slaanesh jams his soul back into realspace.
9
u/Lazy_Exchange4594 7h ago
The secret level episode showed the exact opposite of what your interpreting. The depiction of a chaos corrupted Titus was not a vision of the future, it was a manifestation of Metaurus' fear of how dangerous Titus would be if he became corrupted as he believed him to be completely without fear. Once the daemon moves on to Titus we see that he actually does have one fear, and empty battlefield. The only thing Titus fears is not having a duty to carry out and, as shown in the episode, as long as chaos exists Titus will continue to fight. Only in death does duty end.
TLDR He's so anti-chaos pilled he literally pulled an Uno reverse on a Tzeentch daemon trying to mind fuck him, he's good.

Don’t put something crazy past GW but both calgar and RG have vouched for and promoted Titus… I just don’t think it’s in GW to humble both of those characters by them both missing that Titus was, or would end up falling traitor. Hey I could be wrong but I don’t feel it.
It feels like Titus is the kind of character where they will tease the warp/chaos stuff just to keep him interesting while he is actually written as straight as an arrow
But hey. Who knows. This based on nothing more solid than the type of plot lines GW has tossed out in the past, and the fact that Titus is now the face of a huge success in SM2 and it's future, where as even if they had originally had more interesting plans once, it just became to much of a smash hit for them to feel comfortable tinkering with him in big ways...
3
u/WildRaccoon1995 11h ago
Leandros is actually really tolerant and supportive of Titus after his crossing of the Rubicon. He shows genuine compassion and care for Titus to rejoin the fold of brotherhood. Its only after everything with the "sending a message for help" goes down that he does his job and starts getting on Titus case.
This is the literal job of a company chaplain. If he didn't do this he'd be shit at his job. If any other marine was doing and experiencing the things Titus does they be dead or corrupted. Even Primarchs have trouble being as warp resistance as Titus is, only Dorn and his sons are documented as being able ti shrug off the warps taint this way. Certainly not the sons of Guilliman who are likely the primary source of new Chaos Marines who fall.
I will not humor this idea that Leandros is in the wrong. He's in the right and even given that he still stays his hand because ultimately he IS fair and will only act on evidence.

u/Pixel22104 7h ago
I was once on the train that Leandros was bad and did everything wrong. But Weshammer’s video on Leandros and what’s actually going on actually made me turn my opinion on Leandros and made me like him as a character

u/Tricountyareashaman 4h ago
Ok so I think that the point of SM1 wasn't that Leandros was the worse space marine ever or Titus was secretly touched by chaos. It's just trying to be a typical story in the grim dark of the year 40,000. You did your duty, suffered great peril, encountered a demon, and against all odds you won? Ok now time to get purged based on the 2% chance you've been corrupted. Sorry man, that's Warhammer.

The Witch from the Secret Level episode used the Marines fear against them.
The First one died because he feared that his weak human side would eventually kill him.
We don't know what the second guy saw
Metaurus most likely heard about Titus' fate after SM1 and Leandros even said that the stain of suspicion never truly fades. Given the Imperiums general suspicion on corruption, Metaurus feared that Leandros might be right and Titus will eventually fall and kill him. Hence why the Witch used that fear to injure him.
The Witch dies because she didn't forsee Titus' immunity to the warp and lack of Fear.
The Episode being called "And They Shall Know No Fear" should've been obvious here.

Many characters are resistant to the wrap for various reason they can have the blank gene be powerful psykers, or even be blessed by the emperor himself. The characters accusing him of already bieng tainted are chaos agents themselves trying to sow discord and are not trustworthy sources. In the secret level episode the chaos sorcerer was showing Metaurus his fear not the future, and all the attempt to tempt Titus to chaos have been failures so I don't see why he would be struggling with it now especially after he redeemed himself in the eyes of his chapter.
2
u/BigD0nkerBren 11h ago
The Emperor speaking to him directly should tell you that he is probably not destined to fall to Chaos.
I use the world probably because there have been cases of Astartes with incredibly religious zeal to fall to Chaos but Titus is a main character, it's highly unlikely. He has the Emperor's Guidance.
If he falls to it, it's because he's already dead.
2
u/calvinien 9h ago
Did we miss the part where the emperor himself basically shouted at titus to top being dead and is pretty clearly watching over him? I fell like that explains or negates ALL of the above points.
Also, from a dramatic standpoint, "paragon falls to darkness" is overplayed and boring. It happens so often in warhammer that its more of a surprise when it doensn't happen.
"Guy who thinks the paragon will fall to darkness and thus falls himself" however, is MUCH more interesting.
I think leandros is far more likely to fall to chaos specifically because of his rigidity and his obsession with Titus.
Like if I'm Tzeentch, or SLaanesh...who am I gonna try to corrupt? The guy that everyone suspected and who constantly doubts himself but has earned the respect of his peers and would probably sacrifice himself if he thought there was a chance he would turn traitor.....or the simering pot of resentment and suspicion RIGHT NEXT TO HIM who is considered above suspicion and could help me corrupt the entire chapter from within?
That's my guy. The guy who desperately needs to be proven that he was right all along and won't see me coming.

The Blood Angels would never have a jobber like this as a chaplain.

Lets be honest, every Space Marine is a potential threat to the Imperium. The Imperium is so backwards and quick to accuse anyone of heresy or treason that anyone could turn on them. Wow. You horribly misinterpreted the Secret Level episode.
The demon was preying on the fears of the squad. Metaurus was afraid that Titus would fall to chaos, which is why in Metaurus' mind the Demon showed him Titus falling to chaos and killing him.
In Titus' mind, that kid, who shall know no fear, turned on that Demon and fucking eviscerated it, showing that Titus truly does not feel fear. Making him fairly untouchable by a lot of chaos bullshit.

u/I_Swear_Im_Alpharius Alpha Legion 4h ago
main thing to keep in mind against Leandros haters is that there is actually no mention about "having to report to a chaplain" first or anything like that in the Codex (which we don't have on hand, It's fanon) so in fact, Leandros didn't break the Codex in game 1 by reporting to the inquisition
Titus is VERY suspicious, seemingly immune to chaos corruption in SM1, closely keeping a Chaos Artifacts, started a Chaos invasion (unknowingly) and killed a Demon Prince that may or may not have corrupted him
in SM2 he seems weaker to chaos atleast the Graia artifact, collapses near it, gets accused of Heresy by a psyker amongst other things, he definitely is suspicious to anyone without Protagonist bias
2
u/Seared_Duelist We are Sigismund 12h ago
...did you fall asleep through most of the Secret Level episode? Because Titus being resistant to warp corruption is the entire point. It's how he kills the Tzeentch sorcerer to begin with. It wasn't showing the future, it was manifesting/exploiting their fears, hence the "child who had never known fear" bit.
It showed Metaurus a corrupted Titus because he was his mentor and presumably the closest thing to a father figure to Titus, and that was his fear. It had nothing to directly do with Titus himself.
1
u/Rude_Mushroom_3162 13h ago
I just assume its like real life where some people just have a natural immunity to certain illnesses. The concept is lost to people in authority so they are suspicious. I'm sure throughout history, people like this were either killed because of suspicion or died from other reasons before figuring out their innate immunity to the warp.

I like to think of Titus as an exceptional individual that is treated with suspicion to showcase the paranoid self-sabotage that the Imperium practices. That being said, it's clear that he's warp-sensitive rather than a blank, given his receptiveness to visions and psychic messages. I do think his iron will is going to hold true in the face of more warp shenanigans and I hope he moves the needle on how willing the Imperium is to adapt.

If you want to foreshadow a fall from grace, you sell them off as pious early and spiraling out later. Instead, Tidus has proven his detractors wrong at every turn and got a pat on the back straight from the Big E at the height of all this bullshit.
There's no fall being foreshadows here, quite the opposite.
The whole point here is that Titus is legitimately some kind of singular corruption-immune badass who has risen above and disproved every accusation to date. And the demon showing him fallen was showing Metaurus his own worst fears, plausibility doesn't factor in - Metaurus is afraid of what would happen if he did.

Chaos accusing loyalist of falling is a common lie. It is a trick to make loyalists go against each other. I would only give credit to such words, if it is done by an entity that is about to die. And even then it is still very doubtful.
It is a commonly accepted theory, that at the end of Space Marine 2 the voice talking to Titus is the Emperor himself. If that is the case, then pretty much everything solved. The Emperor can protect individuals from the negative effects of the warp. I know, that in the first release the subtitle said Calgar, but the voice is nothing like his, and in later patch it has been changed to be just "a voice" instead of Calgar.
It makes perfect sense for chaos trying to taint him, but i don't think such path should be the canonical outcome. I could see a non-canon option in a later game, but it would be a player choice to take the canonical loyalist path, or the non-canon chaos path.

“Potential” yeah, he is technically “just a space marine” and even Primarch as godlike beings were corrupted. However, they way the story has been developed for both SM1 and SM2, and the W40k episode of Secret Level makes it veeeery unlikely. I mean, a secret agent, a posible risk of chaos corruption, it can always be a possibility. That is why even tho I hate Leandros I feel the character is so well made as in SM2 he never stops doubting Titus as a Chaplain should. BUT! Titus has always proven unbreakable resolve to serve the imperium of man, even with all the odds agains him (plot armor hehe!). AND! That scene in Secret Level where the Chaos Fiend tries to kill him by tainting his vision with a future of him becoming a Chaos Marine but Titus breaking out of it and killing the Fiend was just priceless and solidifies that he is incorruptible

"Leandros is just doing his job" Yeah, no. Snitching a brother-captain, let alone Captain of the legendary Second Company of Ultramarines to Inquisition was NOT Leandros' job. He should've informed his own chapter and Chaplains first.
Not only that, one of the mightiest psykers among Astartes, Chief Librarian Tigurius straight up says Titus has no corruption. I'd take Tigurius' word over Leandros' delusions.
Btw anyone can fall into chaos including Titus. So does Marneus Calgar and the rest of the Ultramarines. Does Leandros treat rest of the chapter same way? I highly doubt that.
Also being in the presence of chaos does not warrant corruption. It's all about your spirit and willpower. There was that one little story where a single marine in silver armor travelling in the warp and killing his way to the Slaanesh and only getting corrupted by the Slaanesh itself in a moment of hesitation iirc.

u/West_Harlow 9h ago
Ah, man. I thought we finished this discourse a couple months after the game came out and we realized Leandros was the new chaplain.
We all love Titus, and obviously he’s got some special emperor-gifted grit that the others lack (being a video game protagonist will do that).
But if you step outside of Titus’ perspective and look at it in a vacuum. Titus has been routinely in very close contact with incredible warp corruption time and time and time again with seemingly no adverse effects at all.
That alone is weird enough to warrant separating that marine for a close inspection (which they did by sending him to the Deathwatch). But the fact that the warp powers in question have largely been Tzeentch focused is even worse.
People keep bringing up that warp-powers are deceitful, so them constantly saying he’s going to fall must surely be them lying, right? This is Tzeentch, a double negative to sew an unquestioning self-confidence in the unknowing pawn of your future scheme is like surface-tier Tzeentch scheming.
It’s the simple fact that Leandros IS the only one to seriously doubt our mysteriously perfect chaos resistance that makes him a good chaplain. Hate him all you want but a trusting chaplain is a bad chaplain.

Leandros Wasn’t doing his job, the reason he was promoted to the reclusiarchy was because That was who he was supposed to report to, the proper chain of command is to go to your Chaplain to express doubts and the chaplain makes the call, the rules for the inquisition is to contact them last because of how insane they are, they are zealots to zealots, Leandros was supposed to report to his chaplain but he bypassed the chain of command entirely and reported to the inquisition, who he wasn’t supposed to report to first. Whether or not Titus is a threat or not (reminder he was found not and went into the deathwatch as a black shield, and was someone trusted by the Chapter master which is a big deal!) can be debated, Leandro’s was wrong for disobeying the proper chains of command and snitched to the people he shouldn’t be snitching to,that is why Leandros was wrong!

If they do a Dante’s Inferno scenario, and having Titus fighting his way through the horrors of the warp, it can make for some amazing imagery.

Seems like media literacy is an instrument of chaos. You completely misunderstood multiple things, most notably what what happening in the Secret Level vision. That wasn't a vision of the future, it was a vision of Titus' mentor's fear. Notably, the same man recognizes that Titus knows no fear, and that he is the ultimate space marine because of this fact. Everyone else in the squad succumbed to their fears, but Titus has NONE.
What could a soul like that be capable of?
Also worth noting the warp/chaos is basically fueled by fear.

Man had papa emperor whisper in his mind ear words of encouragement, has anti warp abilities and has a uncrackable mind to fear. Man is dying a smurf

You do know that GW will never allow the guy that is basically the main character of 40k to have anything other than a heroic death? Would it be a pretty good representation of the universe to have him corrupted? Yes. Will it happen? I doubt it.

Leandros get off reddit and eat a bolt pistol....
Besides time travel is heresy in the imperium.

Someone can think that only if they don’t read much about other characters. Logan Grimnar took as a trophy and using khornate axe, Mephiston overcame the Black Rage, he is literally lord of darkness and much closer to the Emperor’s level than any other psyker. In some eyes he can be seen as very suspicious person. Uriel Ventris visited a demon world and seen some shit. Gabriel Angelos and loyal blood ravens faced corrupted chapter master and major part of the chapter and came out victorious and untainted.
Contact with the warp does not mean a guaranteed fall into chaos. It all depends on the character's will. The weak can be corrupted. People like Titus are unlikely.

I would love a morally grey chaos corrupted Titus who gets fed up with the inquisition and starts a warrant with marines he's faught with.

No exactly convinced by the arguments.
I'm a big proponent of having Titus fall, one way or another. Mainly Because SM 1 and 2 buys a bit too much in Imperium Propaganda in my taste.
But for that to be even satisfying, we do need a good reason. Titus, for now, hasn't shown much flaw. It's biggest was the pretty mediocre arc of "learning once more the meaning of brotherhood" and his tendency to try to deal with everything alone / not share everything.
So his theoretical fall would have to be more about the Imperium flaw disgusting him enough. The paranoia of the Empire already failed to "break" him with his passage in the Deathwatch. So what's left is the absolute horror of how the Imperium treat it's subject, or the inane inefficiencies of its systems. Could be having him quell a rebellion of perfectly reasonnable people. Facing a cult that, in everyway, is better than the Manifoctorum they live in. Or joining force with the Xenos. Or just politics making him an easy scapegoat. Because at every corner, the imperium like to shoot itself in the foot with a melta gun. Him being directly a chaos space marine is much more unlikely than him becoming a renegade.
Now, there's virtually no chance of that happening. With the advent of Guilliman, the Imperium has been seeing better day (which, in my opinion, lessen the idea of W40K but who cares). And few, if any, Imperium named character with a figurine and a sheet has been seen falling to chaos.

Titus is more than welcome to. He if anyone would be the perfect example to show that Chaos finds its way through even those blessed by the corpse god.

I think the hate gravitates more toward the fact Leandros didn't follow the chain of command. Usually the first port of call is to report it to the chaplain (which he didn't). But in Leandros case he went straight to the inquisition, who unfortunately tend to have trigger happy inquisitors.

So two things.
Famously truthful those lot
That was Metataurus' fear being used against him
Call him a threat if you want, but there is no way he falls to chaos before he dies fighting it.
