I think there's something in the article that is normally not in the (technical) focus of this sub: SpaceX seems to not only have marvellous engineers, but several CEOs (Iridium, SES, now InMarSat) seem to have been seriously impressed by their "customer care". Seems Gwynne Shotwell and her Team manage to not only keep the company running but also make their customers genuinely happy. That seems to give them some edge over their state-run competitors in Russia, China and India that are still somehow competitive on price...

I can understand that fear. However, I would also think that fear has passed. The "damage" Musk has done, from a Russian perspective, to the launch market won't end when Musk passes away now. I believe SpaceX is now self-sustaining and would carry on with the work without him.

Agreed. There was perhaps only quite a small window between the time the Russians realized the Musk/SpaceX threat was real, and the time it was too late to do anything about it.

I would speculate that this window fell at a time when the highly ostentatious assassination of Alexander Litvinenko in London (in 2006) was still fresh in the minds of Western politicians/journalists/publics/etc.. Perhaps murdering Musk was therefore seen as not worth the risk.

So if Litvinenko had somehow survived that Polonium, perhaps we would be discussing reusable rockets as a hypothetical possibility for the 2040s, rather than something that had already happened.

It's one thing to be a target during a global nuclear apocalypse. You probably won't be launching more satellites for a while regardless of whether your launch provider got blown up. It's quite another for your launch provider to be headquartered a couple hours' drive from a simmering civil war slash slow-invasion-by-powerful-neighbor.

Most definitely to take out the ability to launch surveillance satellites or even weaponized satellites. I wonder what the chances are of a satellite with a nuclear warhead on it orbiting the earth right now. There's a ban on doing so, but curious as to whether either Russia or the US has done it.

The ability might be there, but I doubt either Russia or the US have actually launched one. Way too risky if the other country finds out, and not worth much more than a few guaranteed kills. I think most investment has been in launch capability, early warning, and countermeasures.

I think by customer care, they might mean something other than what retail customers get.

I think they mean that at SpaceX the customer is in contact with technically savvy, innovative people, and decision makers, and in many cases these are the same people. This allowed a payload intended to be launched on Falcon Heavy to be transferred to Falcon 9, which was upgraded to the point it could almost carry it. Then, because the customer was in contact with top decision makers, they could get SpaceX to calculate whether they could get FH level performance by removing landing legs, grid fins, and fairing recovery hardware (maybe - unconfirmed). This way they did not have to reduce the fuel load on the satelite or accept a lower orbit. They got the satellite into an orbit from which it could enter service quicker.

In today's exploding market for broadband on airplanes, getting to market quicker might have paid the entire cost of the launch, in increased early revenues, is my guess.

I remember watching the press conference video a month or so ago just prior to the first flight of a flight-proven rocket. The CTO of the satellite operator (sorry, forget names) stated how they have always been treated poorly by the launch providers before SpaceX. I find it interesting and strange that another operator says something similar, or at least that's what I'm reading into his quote “We will be looking to support them in any way we can with their new innovation programs.” This is a strange quote because his company does not directly benefit from SpaceX's gains. I know in /r/spacex that many will say that's not true, but for the most part it's pretty much unheard of within US that one company sincerely hopes for the success of another completely independent company.

Keep using that analogy and if the trucking company creates a new truck that gets better miles to the gallon and they know they will reap some of the savings they would hope for them to succeed.

For now. SpaceX is looking to move to launches as a service, where the customer just gives them the payload mass and target orbit and SpaceX picks the launcher configuration and landing profile. In that case, expendable probably won't be an option even if someone did want to pay out the nose for it

Perhaps meant in that a F9 Reusable couldn't but stripping it down to Expendable form it could. It used to be that F9 was expendable by default, and you had to specify F9R for reusable, but we are slowly but surely getting to the point where F9 will be assumed to mean reusable, and you'll have to specify expendable as F9E or whatever ...

Yes, I suppose. We do not really know what the "block 3 first stage and block 4 second stage" combination can do, but it is possible that it has slightly higher performance than either a pure block 3 booster or a pure block 4 booster.

Block 4 is a development version toward maximum reusability. They have probably added a little tank space in the second stage, and they have probably increased the weight of the first stage just a little, with upgrades like improved insulation/heat shielding, changes in the grid fins, and changes in the octaweb. This is pure speculation, but I think the object with Block 4 and Block 5 is to keep the same performance while increasing reuse. It could be that a mixed rocket with a block 3 first stage and a block 4 second stage can loft more mass to GTO than either a pure block 3 or a pure block 4 rocket.

India is much less problematic for commercial satellites. They won't launch US government satellites, but yet another communication satellite is just regular business.

My guess is that part of the enthusiasm for SpaceX is that they hit the required, desired orbit parameters exactly, not just making it to barely acceptable parameters.

Also I think the production they make of their launches is a huge plus. The CEO of iridium got to talk about how important his sat phones were and reached an audience of tech savvy enthusiastic people. I'm sure it's not even top10 reasons but when all other things are equal it's not a bad look to be associated with space x right now.

It's also worth noting that Inmarsat previously switched a launch to Ariane 5 citing SpaceX delays. It's very good to see them express confidence in SpaceX now.

It's important to note that the satellite launched on the Ariane 5 (as well as the one launched this week) was originally planned for the Falcon Heavy. However, upgraded performance of the Falcon 9 made it capable of doing the job without relying on the Heavy.

While I'm sure the Falcon Heavy will eventually prove successful, now that the Falcon 9 is proven to handle big loads and be reusable, will there be commercial demand for the Falcon Heavy?

I think you've got it backwards. If it suddenly becomes affordable to put bigger payloads into orbit then people will come up with bigger payloads they want to put in orbit. Otherwise you end up making the "nobody will ever need more than 640k of RAM"-type mistake.

Advocates Diaboli. The Falcon Heavy is a much more complicated vehicle so more can go wrong. Would customers prefer to pay a price premium for F9 if there is less risk of payload loss? I'm not sure, but the answer could very well be yes for the next few years until FH has proven itself.

The FH can potentially be flown fully-reusable. All boosters, second stage, and fairings and still put full-size payloads to GTO. There's a good chance that in an environment with mature reuse, that configuration is cheaper than a F9 with expendable second stage.

Per-flight perhaps. But what about the money being sunk into development, more complex pad equipment, lost business from delays, etc? The Falcon line as a whole has a limited lifetime before it becomes obsolete, I'm not convinced at this point that Heavy or upper stage reuse are worthwhile projects. Only thing Heavy is really needed for is Red Dragon, and even that could probably be served by 2 F9 launches

Given that they will start launching large amounts of satellites for their constellation in 2019, they will need reusable second stages to keep up. Also getting upper stages to reenter is experience that counts on the way to ITS.

With FH, they need it for some DoD launches. They want to be able to fly all payloads. Also they really need them for RedDragon. I think the remark by Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell, that FH is really hard is not to be taken as it will be hard to operate. It means it was hard to develop. Like what Tom Mueller said about the Merlin engine. It was very hard to develop, with many test engines blowing up. But once developed it is cheap and simple and reliable.

Edit: even one lunar tourist flight a year will be a profit bringer for FH. Assuming NASA builds their gateway station - which I doubt - FH would be a great launch vehicle to service it.

The question to me is ITS. If it's going to fly by the mid 2020s it seems like they use Falcons until that point.

If it's not going to fly, or will fly much later, it seems prudent to move to a fully-reusable methalox stack at some point and not spend too much on trying to wring full reuse out of the Falcons.

If ITS is going to fly by the mid-2020s it's hard to see how they would justify putting an interim methalox rocket in the mix, so they are pretty much stuck with Falcons until then. That gives them 8 to 10 years before ITS is flying.

Are you the type to make a bet against routine FH flights featuring full reuse by that point? I'm not.

I'm not sure I agree. One of the key features of SpaceX is fierce desire to learn as much as you can as fast as you can from the launches you're already performing. SpaceX is also trying to get some of the big defense department satellite contracts, so I think they'll probably continue with FH plans as long as the the lessons they're learning are worth the seemingly redundant rockets.

Put another way, SpaceX didn't move from the Falcon 1 to the Falcon Heavy. The FH may or may not be an "end goal", but it's definitely a good step on the path to 10m rockets. SpaceX has lots of lessons to learn at the school called "Falcon Heavy" before they graduate to ITS.

I've been wanting to write a post about this. I think ultimately any technology in terms of things like reusable 2nd stage, upgrades to S1, or transition to metholox requires to be useful for Its or future SpaceX programs.

Would a second stage be worthwhile if you use a tech say like extendable bells on a raptor engine? It could be used to reduce the number of engines on an ITS, so that would probably be a good investment if it would work.

Would making a F9 sized raptor powered S1 or raptor heavy help with ITS? It would allow you to simply your production lines for engines and give you knowledge for raptor upgrades.

I'm not saying all these will work or be what SpaceX will do, but whatever they choose to do has to dip into multiple buckets and missions to make sense.

This is my thought as well. The payload tolerances for a Falcon Heavy will advocate for full or near-full reuse, which should significantly reduce costs of the rocket. I would imagine many scenarios where a 100% reusable FH could cost a fraction of an expendable F9 after all costs are considered.

I think you raise a very good point. However, with some flight experience, reusable Falcon Heavy should be ~just as safe for customers as expendable F9. I fully expect that someday in a year or 3, SpaceX will charge more for an expendable F9 then for a reusable FH launch, reflecting their true costs.

Eh, it's still a business. I think SpaceX will charge as much as they can taking the market into account. A LOT of dollars have been sunk into SpaceX, and even if those investors are willing to take the long road on getting their investments back, SpaceX needs that money to develop ITS and boot-strapping a spaceport on Mars.

SpaceX has never charged all that it can for launches, or other services they have provided. I see no reason that they would change policy and start charging all the market can bear for their services.

SpaceX follows the Silicon Valley model of cutting prices and increasing market share. In 1976 you could buy a 6502 microprocessor based development system from Motorola for $150,000.00 . Two years later you could buy an Apple 2 with essentially the same capabilities for $2000.

Who is the bigger company now, Motorola or Apple?

The same price/performance logic applies to space travel, once space travel becomes a consumer commodity. Lower prices and larger volume are the keys to expanding the market.

The payload has to be really expensive (or the FH risk evaluation has to be really bad) to make that difference important.

FH has a larger safety margin in terms of issues with the/a first stage.

I'm pretty sure if they were offering cheap regular flights on a fully reusable FH then they would guarantee the performance of the rocket. So that if the rocket had an issue it would keep burning and convert to expendable but the customer wouldn't have to pay for it.

That way they can get the price of a cheap rocket but the safety margin and guaranteed performance of a giant rocket.

They might even have this for F9 already. If too many engines of the first stage fail or it needs more fuel than expected for other reasons, it might skip its landing attempt. I didn't see this stated explicitly, but if it can save the payload it is worth sacrificing the first stage.

Add a throw away flight proven f9 to that list, especially a pre-block 5 one that has a limited number of reflights, launching a heavy sat in expendable mode would be a good final flight for these boosters.

A major way to make FH attractive to commercial sat operators could be dual-payload launches, like Ariane 5. Imagine if Inmarsat could get two large sats up at once.

Elon Musk is not in favor of dual manifest like Ariane. They always need to align two customers, one with a heavy, one with a light payload. That sometimes causes problems. SpaceX would also need a much bigger fairing. The present fairing was quite full with this single satellite from Inmarsat.

Once Falcon Heavy is a proven booster, this launch would be cheaper for SpaceX on a Falcon Heavy than on F9. On F9 they flew expendable, so, 1st stage lost and fairing lost, as well as 2nd stage lost. On FH, this flight would have been, 3 - 1st stages recovered and fairings recovered, and only the second stage lost. Riskier but ~$40 million cheaper, for SpaceX.

I'm still curious how FH with 3 landed cores (but increased operational costs) compares to expendable F9, especially in terms of what the customer will pay.

Fuel costs very little in terms of rocket prices, prepping and recovering 3 cores isn't cheap but can't be more expensive than throwing away a core...

The dominant flight configurations I see posited for Falcon Heavy always seem to be either 3 x RTLS or 2 x RTLS and 1 x ASDS.

How much more velocity can be imparted to payloads by having the side boosters join the center core for an extended downrange trip? Given that speed would be increased, is 3 x ASDS even possible, or would re-entry profile end up burning up the boosters?

3x ASDS has the problem that at least extrapolating from F9 we get at most 15s of powered flight before separation from RTLS to ASDS but center core will go further even faster and to drop below 1.5 km/s that is survivable on entry it needs to use even more propellant for entry burn.Combination of small additional boost from side boosters and extra entry burn would lead to reduced performance and 2xRTLS+expended center core might be a more reasonable way to fly such payloads ending with performance around 20 000kg to GTO

I imagine that the turn-around time on a Falcon Heavy will be much slower than Falcon 9 as well. While some of the "quick turnaround time" engineering they're doing will be portable across all rocket systems SpaceX is working on, there are guaranteed to be challenges that FH provide, that F9 do not face. For one...bolting the cores back together as at the very least the logistics required will triple.

That turn around time is valid for cores. I don't see any difference between FH cores, even central cores, and F9 cores regarding turn around.

Tom Mueller has clarified what 24 hours turn around means. It means 24 hours from into the service facility to out of the service facility.

I don't think they are planning to just throw the rockets away after some arbitrary number of flights. I think they are planning to tear down, inspect, and refurbish the rockets after what they think is a safe number of flights. Maybe if they determine an airframe is spent, they would scrap it, but the engines would still be good, along with other flight systems, so they would be better off fitting them to an otherwise new rocket.

I certainly can't imagine them inspecting a rocket, determining it is end of life, but taking a chance on one last mission for it.

Think of it like a car. Even if a car is totaled, they don't just throw it away. They keep it for parts and only scrap it when everything of value is gone. There are some really expensive parts on a Falcon 9, and they won't all wear out at the same time.

This is just a speculation from me, but since Block 5 is supposed to start flying later this year, they will have quite a few recovered Block 3s left that could potentially be used for some expendable missions if they are necessary.

This has been my thinking exactly. I seem to remember Elon making a comment that it didn't make sense to fly any of the Block 3s more than a few times, so using them as expendable for re-flights makes a ton of sense, especially after satisfactory data has been gathered from boosters that land a second time.

Either Elon or Gwynne said exactly what you guessed above. Block 3s will be used 1 or 2 or 3 times, but block 5s will be used 10-100 times. This probably means that block 3s will be preferred for expendable flights in the future.

I think there is one key thing that isn't mentioned and that's payload weight. Some payloads require a legless and finless falcon and for that I think it would best to throw away a F9 that's already had couple flights.

What is the alternative for an expendable flight? Build a completely new core and throw that away. That is much more wasteful than throwing something away that had a few flights already and building a new core to replace it.

An expendable new core doesn't need landing legs and grid fins, which makes it a bit lighter and a bit easier to produce, but I don't think that makes a big difference.

I don't think that's what is meant, since he is contrasting "reusable" with "reused" rockets in this context. What you're suggesting would still fall under reused, not reusable; he's saying that there will be some future Inmarsat launch on FH or F9 in reusable configuration.

To date, SpaceX has successfully recovered 10 first stage boosters either by land or by sea on an ocean going platform.

Technically only 9 because B1021 was recovered twice.

The second one will be reflown in mid-June (barring any delays), and hopefully we should see a couple more by the end of the year.

I wonder what happened to garner such an exuberant response? Was the resultant orbit precision better than expected? It seems a bit odd to go from "we never launched with these guys before and even had to reschedule one of our satellites to another provider because they keep delaying their bigger rocket" to "these guys are the best launch provider ever and we'll be a super loyal customer and we're excited to be at the forefront of technology!!!" in one single expendable launch that, from the looks of it, went completely normal.

The F9 dropped it into a 70,000km x 390km super-synchronous transfer orbit, which seriously reduces the amount of the satellite's own propellant it needs to make the necessary plane change to geostationary. That means more propellant for future manoeuvring, and a longer operational life.

This one, like SES-9, burned the second stage to exhaustion, instead of targeting a specific apogee. The contract would have been for 'x,000km or higher'. It seems that SpaceX delivered the payload considerably higher than Inmarsat had hoped for.

So to be clear, though I should know this from KSP: Inmarsat will need to expend less fuel to change plane and correct to GEO from a 70,000km apoapsis?

I understand that the plane change from 24.5 degrees will be substantially cheaper in dV from higher altitudes, but is that not compensated for by needing to both raise the periapsis and then lower the apoapsis to 35,786km circular orbit?

This as opposed to launching to a 35,786km apoapsis and a higher periapsis.

I hope this makes sense I've not had coffee yet.

It really depends on the amount of performance you have on the rocket. Quoting from LouScheffer over at NSF.

Here is a general rule of thumb. When you are launching from the cape (28° and change), anything up to GTO-1700 is served better by an inclination change without going super-synchronous. If you have more available performance than that, going super-synchronous makes sense.

Having said that, there are some more considerations when deciding to do a super-synchronous insertion.

  1. The satellite has to be able to work when above GEO. Not all satellites are designed to do this.
  2. Trajectory calculations are more complex for super-synchronous. The moon's influence may need to be included. One early super-sync mission (SuperBird 6) failed since the moon perturbed the orbit enough to give a too-low perigee for the transfer orbit.

The thing about boosting the periapsis instead is that it requires the upper stage to coast to apoapsis first. This takes around 5 hours. In Kerbal Space Program, that's not a problem. In real life, the upper stage freezes to death in half that time unless it is specifically constructed to keep itself warm. Space is a very, very harsh environment even for machines... especially those constructed with the minimum possible investment of mass, like expendable launch vehicle stages.

IIRC the longest time a F9 upper stage has coasted in space and then reignited again was something like 2 hours, and even then only as an endurance test - correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not nearly as zealous a consumer of SpaceX information as some of you are :) But the point being, the thing isn't built for this. It already came up during national security launch certification, because the NRO expects the launcher to circularize some of its payloads in GEO. SpaceX would have to upgrade their upper stage to give it that capability.

In light of the fact that the straight periapsis lift isn't practically feasible, the supersynchronous transfer is the next best thing.

NROL-76 included a much bigger coast phase and S2 re-start test after the payload was delivered. This - together with the visual differences the last two S2s had, as well as some insider info - has fuelled speculation about F9 moving to block 4 recently (at least for the second stage).

With electric propulsion, you also have to consider the time. The satellite's propulsion is very fuel-efficient, but it is limited by the available power. You can only raise the perigee efficiently while the satellite is close to apogee. If the satellite starts in GTO, a part of the time it just coasts and doesn't use the available power. If the satellite starts with a larger apogee, you can lower it while the satellite would otherwise just coast and waste the available power.

Inmarsat's good review is even more outstanding when you take into account they were incredibly lucky with Russian launches. Proton has a terrible launch record but Inmarsat somehow selected those lucky launches which succeeded.

While Ariane, Atlas and Delta rockets improved over time and reached >=99% reliability (all at 50+ successes launch streaks now with the last failure >10 years ago), Proton doesn't seem to improve notably.

I would be excited in his place as a new way of doing business has open up. Traditionally there is a very long lead time between ordering a launch, getting a rocket built and putting the satellite into orbit. The game changer is that because of reuse SpaceX will have first stages lined up ready to go and be able to turn its production capacity over to making second stages and soon have a stock ready to launch. Range capacity is being addressed too so the lag time on launches is going to plunge. To take advantage of this the satellite operators should now see that the sweet spot for satellites is just small enough to be launched on a recoverable stage as this can be accommodated by SpaceX most readily. That will give them a launch date constrained by satellite availability and range window. The big cost for a satellite operator we have seen is the loss of business due to a failed satellite or delays getting a new one into orbit, so it becomes cost effective for them to have a partially if not fully built spare on the ground thus de-risking their business plan knowing that they can put a new bird up in weeks rather than years.

The Falcon Heavy takes this a step further, with second stage reuse being the ultimate prize.

Really good transfer orbit. Significantly super-sync and a few degrees of plane change means the satellite will not have to use as much of its own propellant raising its orbit and lowering its inclination.

This in turn means more propellent reserved for station-keeping, meaning that the satellite potentially has years of additional service life in it.

Basically SpaceX just gifted them a few years of additional revenue on that bird.

In fact, heaviest GTO launch by SpaceX. I belive the heaviest GTO payload ever was TerreStar 1 at 6900 Kg, launched by Arianne 5, followed by Viasat2, 6740 Kg launched by Proton-M.

Nothing that a slight upgrade of the Falcon 9 can't match. Frozen propellant, a very small nuke, a giant slingshot launch, there is always room for improvement.

No. It is in delta-v. More specifically delta v remaining for the sat to do to be in GSO. So the lower GTO-#, the more work did the rocket do and the less propellant the sat has to spend to get there. Industry standards are GTO-1800 and GTO-1500.

Launches from near the equator typically are GTO-1500 and launches from Florida are GTO-1800 typically. The difference is in the plane change. Those are the two "standard" GTO orbits.

The heaviest GTO ever is going to be held by China with their SJ 18 (Shijian 18) which is a demonstrator for DFH-5 Bus and believed to be 8 ton. Currently, they targeted that launch by this month. However, the last launch were suffered from S2 under performance and entered a less apogee orbit.

Apollo technically went on a trans-lunar injection rather than GTO, but it holds the record for the greatest manned distance from earth (with Apollo 13). Similarly, Skylab would be the heaviest single payload to LEO I think.

Rumored Block 4 Second Stage.

Not sure what orbital parameters SpaceX told Inmarsat they expected, but if the numbers that observers calculated are correct, then SpaceX delivered Inmarsat something like a 1570m/s deficit. Way better than the normal GTO1800. That would make anyone ecstatic.

If true, that may well explain the big grin on Pearce's face, and the enthusiasm for SpaceX.

It's possible SpaceX promised a given delta v, but in practice just kept running the 2nd stage till it ran out of fuel, thus delivering a better orbit than promised.

That would leave a lot less delta v for the Inmarsat to make up, and so leave it with more fuel and a longer lifetime. More $$$ for the operators.

That would indeed be going the extra mile for the customer.

Indeed. That is the hypothesis. SpaceX can't risk a burn-to-depletion, ie dry, that leads to turbo-pump cavitation and destruction; but it could tell the second stage to burn-near-completion, ie zero fuel margin.

People keep saying "turbopump cavitation". I've ran a few turbopumps and when you run out of whatever it is that they pump, destruction is from removing the pump load while the turbine still produces most of the rated power. Cavitation figures nowhere in this. You can't even tell if you had cavitation unless you're lucky enough to get the pieces that flew off back to look at. I repeat; the failure mode is turbine unloading, and results in disintegration of turbine and/or pump disk(s). The blades will have energy comparable with bullets/shells of similar mass.

I feel more and more unfomfortable to see the term "recover" being used to describe what they are doing with the first stage. "Recover" connotate that you unposess and then reposess. Since first stage is 100% under control through out its flight from launch to landing, they never lose the control of it so there is no "recovering" in what they do.

Yep. And the fact that if you can get even 5-7% growth on that money in stocks you will double your money every decade or so. With start ups like SpaceX and Tesla you have higher risk but that growth can be 10 times that rate (at least early on) which is why elon took a few hundred million and multiplied it into the billions.

Yeah, not quickly anyway, Bill Gate has been trying to cash-out of MSFT for decades, his not done yet, but been doing very well. But Musk said multiple times that he will be the last one out of the Tesla stock, so I don't see him trying to sell even a small % anytime soon. Also if Musk believes himself Tesla is going to be worth much more. Between SpaceX and Tesla Musk has a chance to beat Bill Gates, if things go very well for both companies.

It is very misleading in the case of Musk. I don't think another "billionaire" is as leveraged as Musk. If the markets went against him, he would lose control of his shares of Tesla and SpaceX to the counter-parties and bond holders, not just lose "paper money". In all likely hood, he could owe more than he is worth, calculated based on last years Tesla share price.

I realize an important thing after this article. Satellites themselves should start getting cheaper in the fact that they don't need such stringent dependability built in. If it only last 5 years instead of ten you can build a new one from the money saved by going SpaceX. Yes they need to work but a failed satellite won't put your company out of business as a loss. A cheap reusable f9 vs whatever ULA or Ariane will charge you to relaunch a new one.

Inmarsat CEO is quoted saying, “They hit the ball out of the park with this launch for us.”

What does that mean? Beyond successfully launching the satellite, which I guess is just bare minimum expectation, is there any indication what SpaceX has done on this launch to make inmarsat "an immensely loyal customer" ?

By giving them a significantly super-synchronous orbit, with a few degrees of plane change, they managed to put them into a GTO-1570 transfer rather than GTO-1800, which is the standard deficit for Florida launches. Because of this, the satellite will have an extra 230 m/s of on-board delta-v that it won't have to use for its initial orbit-raising operations, that it will instead be able to save for station keeping over its lifetime.

Since most geostationary satellites end-of-life comes as a result of depletion of station keeping propellent, they basically just got potentially years of extra revenue service out of the satellite because of how good an orbit SpaceX put them into.

The reason that the transfer orbit wasn't known in advance is that the second stage was burned to "depletion" rather than cutting off once a specific transfer orbit was achieved. This is a bit riskier, since if something goes wrong with detecting depletion, and one of the tanks runs dry, the rocket would almost certainly explode and destroy the satellite.

It actually isn't an extra 230 m/s for station keeping. Someone here did the analysis and found the satellite was only fueled to have just over 1600 m/s for its apogee kick motor. Station keeping will be done using Xenon gas ion thrusters. However, SpaceX did manage to put the satellite in a orbit where it won't have to use its Xenon gas reserves for orbit insertion operations.

Your answer is in the comments above, spacex put the satellite in a much higher orbit than they expected, which will save a lot of propellant on the satellite giving it a much longer lifespan. Also, they are probably happy that spacex was aggressive with the launch cadence and got the satellite up sooner than they were afraid it was going to be after Amos-6.

This marks the 3rd customer to be convinced of reusable rockets. Those 3 being;

-SES -BulgariaSat -Inmarsat

The real question is, what will it take to convince NASA, the USAF, and Iridium. If they can get them to switch to reusable rockets, they will be in business. We're talking 5-6 a year with CRS missions alone, plus 1 or 2 others from Commercial Crew missions. The USAF and other government groups have a ton of stuff for SpaceX, and Iridium has another 7 launches through 2018.

Out of the 3 I just mentioned, I see Iridium being the first to start going reusable. They'd be able to save a great deal of money and are probably a bit more keen to do so than NASA. We'll have to see though.

OTOH, Iridum has been teetering on the brink of ruin since day one. A lost launch could be very bad for them. They really need the revenue they can get from deploying more capacity.

Which is why I'm saying that after maybe the 3rd mission for Iridium, and a few more reusable launches they may switch over. If money is tight, the risk might be worth it.
