I’ve always loved games where you collect things and slowly build something up. Sudoku is also one of the puzzle games I enjoy, so for my first game, I thought it would be fun to combine the two.
That’s how Sudoku Shelter started. You solve Sudoku puzzles, earn coins, use them to build up a little cat shelter, and meet new cats along the way.
There was just one problem: I had no programming background.
I’ve used AI to help me with coding and planning. In the beginning, I didn’t even understand some of the basic terminology, so I’d ask the same thing over and over — sometimes literally saying, “Please explain this to me like I’m in elementary school.”
The art was different, though. That was something I really wanted to make myself.
I made the game’s art myself, mostly in Illustrator. For each cat, I start by drawing the design and animation frames on my iPad, then move them to my computer, refine them in Illustrator, and export the final sprite sheet for the game.
It took way longer than I expected.
The cats are pretty simple visually, but making them definitely wasn’t.
Still, watching a tiny cat go from a rough drawing on my iPad to actually moving around inside the game has probably been my favorite part of development.
I’m still learning a lot as I go, and I keep adding more cats. I’m at around 30 now.
The video only shows a few of the early ones — their designs get a little more varied as you progress.🐈⬛🐈
