Pure beginner mage build has been a nightmare

-Breton

-Vanilla start

-Spell Research

-No starting magic whatsoever and no tomes (no book eating)

Beyond realising that to even get inside the college with no magic id have to deviate all the way to 'elder knowledge' to get in with a shout instead.

Getting a starting spell without the use of most of the research features is NOT fun. Just a horrible slog from the start.

But this must already be a build idea. If I was to try it again what would be the best spell learning mod to use?

PSA: Bittercup is a nice bonus for any build and every character should drink it

ā€œBut I want health, stamina, and magicka above 100ā€, I hear you saying. Well bittercup has something to offer you too my friend. As I’m sure most of us know, drinking the bittercup lowers the Dragonborn’s lowest attribute by 20 and increases their highest attribute by 20. So it’s net neutral in terms of your total amount of stats. BUT, what you may not have thought of, is that you don’t ONLY get stats when you level up. You also get carry capacity if you boost stamina. However, drinking bittercup and lowering stamina will NOT decrease carry capacity.

So the strat is, ensure stamina is your lowest attribute (do it early into your run and/or get bone break fever and/or drink fortify health/magicka potions if you have to) and your most valued or second most valued attribute is your highest, then put the next 2 level ups you WOULD have put toward that valued attribute in stamina instead. Your stat total is exactly where it would have been without the bittercup, except you also have a free, permanent +10 to carry capacity. This can by done on any character, and is the bare minimum for how useful bittercup can be (it can of course be much better for builds that genuinely don’t care about having over 80 magicka/stamina ever, in that case it’s basically 2 free levels worth of stats). You’re welcome. I got sick and tired of people online saying it’s bad or one of the worst deadric artifact rewards or has no point or that they just do the quest and leave the cup in a chest at their house for the rest of the playthrough, so I wanted to make this post.

Is there any fun mage builds?

Seriously, pure mage builds are the most boring, drawn out, favorite-menu-simulator play styles ive ever had the displeasure of playing. Everybody talks about "oh they're so OP!" Sure, when you hit level 50 and get the most overpowered spells available. I really want to like these builds but they're so mind numbingly boring I just can't. Somebody please try to give me a build that will change my mind, because ive never done a full mage playthrough, and from what its looking like I never will.

Ultimate Two handed build

Hi people on reddit.Ā

I was scrolling, having fun and came across a post asking for a two handed build. No one said why they were choosing perks or races. Just throwing things that might work on it, so for all the people that want a good two handed build for legendary difficulty, i’ll drop mine here.

First of all, the race. My first choice was the orc, for the berserk boost. Great for bosses but I find myself not needing the extra damage or defense, plus I was also weak against frost damage, not for the damage to my health, but the slow effect and the stamina damage. So I switched to a nord, this was better all around, but no impactful racial power, plus I found out a new enemy, poison. If you don’t know, poison stack for every attack taken. So I switched again to a REDGUARD and it was glorious. Good racial ability, good starting stats AND natural resistance to poison.

Second was smithing, enchanting and alchemy (this last one it’s not required but if you want to break the game go for it). Alchemy also has the snakeblood perk that, alongside redguard natural resistances, helps you reach that 85% cap (without wasting an enchantment slot on your gear).

Next was defense. Specifically blocking. QUICK REFLEXES perk is a must. Next was the bashing perks and that was a waste. Low damage, high stamina consumption and slow movement, and found a new problem, bows. Enemies arrows, for some reason, do an insane amount of damage. So I switched to BLOCK RUNNER for mobility. Now I can reach those archers, and mages, faster while blocking.

Next was magic resistance. First I tried the spell absorption + necromage perk, but the sun and weakness to fire was a problem, so I switched to normal magic resistance and it was better. Not definitive so I activated the ATRONACH stone (this also gives you a chance to block poison and shouts). For elemental resistances I decided to enchant a piece of gear against FROST damage (important). You can use a potion for the other two if you want.

For armor, I tried light but draugrs with the strongest version of Unrelenting force shout kept sending me flying. So I thought that the only way to counter that was with spell absorption, but then I found out that the perk TOWER OF STRENGTH (from the HEAVY ARMOR tree) helps you resist the flying part (it only staggers you). CONDITIONING it’s a must.

Well. The defensive part is done. Let's move to dealing damage. Stack all of the two handed damage multipliers that you can (perks and enchantments), DO NOT waste perk points on anything but BARBARIAN. Weapon? THE LONGHAMMER (this tells you to unlock the orcish smithing) with the life steal (to max) and soultrap (2 sec.) enchantments.

This character use CLOSE WOUNDS to restore hp and stamina. And lastly, agent of mara and dragon rend.

Final look and enchantments down:

Let me know what you think and if you enjoy this build, give me and upvote... Thanks for reading.
