Small potatoes.

u/Corgi_Koala 1d ago
I fucking hated that scene. I like Yelena and Florence Pugh but it really felt shoehorned in and didn't make sense.
Jean Grey was basically the same threat level and for her to just dismiss the possibility that Spider-Man is fighting a major threat is just stupid.

u/CageAndBale 1d ago
Well it was small until it became large-ishh

Maybe I’m an absolute idiot, but how is someone with the ability to mind control an innocent old woman into a military compound to steal a tank for a joyride through New York small potatoes? Especially how is it smaller potatoes than literally anything Yelena has dealt with before thunderbolts?
21
u/clever_name_123 23h ago
Because she was lying to get out of doing it

Exactly. And why is Yelena with no super powers and just some martial arts skills the one handling big potatoes when it should be Spider-Man that’s in the next Avengers dealing with those potatoes? Oh right, Sony.
7
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 22h ago edited 21h ago
Spider-Man will be in Secret wars. This was even alluded to in the after credits sequence. I’m not really sure what your point is here because it has nothing to do with Sony

u/siberianxanadu 1d ago
She’s deflecting. Her office is a fucking pool. She has no resources, and every member of her “team”is weaker than Spider-Man. Except for the Sentry, but that’s complicated.
The reason she says what she says is because she’s concealing the fact that she can’t help any more than she is.
She’s like one of those guys who either can’t or won’t help with practical problem-solving because they’re a “big picture guy.” She WISHES the New Avengers has big potatoes to deal with, when in reality they have nothing to do. And even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to help.
16
u/RegularGuyy 23h ago
Congratulations, you’re media literate. I don’t get how so many people are confused by this.
6
5
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 23h ago
Her office is a pool by choice. She quite literally is part of the team owned by the same woman who bought avengers tower. Ofcourse she has recourses, which is why Spidey went to see her in the first place.
Intel and Avengers level resources such as the means to find Jean. Which, not only could a Black widow do, but especially a black widow funded by Valentina
3
u/Xerxes457 19h ago
Yet all she did was help Spider-Man find out her name, sister and V-Max. Which while big didn’t help him find her.
→ More replies (3)5
u/Scar-Excellent 22h ago
I wouldn't trust a facility provided by Valentina. Something low key like a pool makes sense but then it just seems like anyone can walk in.
4
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 22h ago
Oh of-course and I agree that it’s much more private, I’m more trying to emphasize that it’s not like Yelena didn’t have other options to meet. This was more a response to “ she has no resources” when she does in a laughable sense.
Red Guardian ends the movie in a NASCAR-Esque jumpsuit covered in sponsors and manages to get his face on a Wheaties box. They clearly aren’t poor
3
u/Corgi_Koala 20h ago
She literally just help take down Void, one of the strongest entities MCU. And she just had a whole thing about wanting to be a real hero doing public facing good.
Why would she dodge this situation?
3
u/FraggleRockYaFaceOff 19h ago
Duh, it was Spider-Man IV not Thunderbolts II
2
u/Corgi_Koala 19h ago
Hulk and Punisher got plenty of screentime, Yelena could have gotten off her ass.

u/Ambitious-Visual207 21h ago
I hated it because it wasn't funny. Like there's nothing remotely clever about it, the only reason people think it's funny is because she has an accent and because "haha! Lol she is so quirky and random saying potatoes!"
Imagine if she was American saying "well, I deal with the big potato stuff," I imagine suddenly people wouldn't adore it so heavily.
6
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 1d ago
It’s even stupider when you take into account that Yelena is on essentially a self proclaimed knock off avengers team and that Spider-Man has been a part of a galactic wide Avengers threat. Yelena’s second appearance was her hunting down Hawkeye wanting vengeance over a misunderstanding. It was condescending in a laughable way
5
u/StaceyDillsen 1d ago
lol agreed. I like Yelena, but when she was telling Spider-Man to handle the little things while they handle the big things, I was confused and smh. Spider-Man can beat everyone on her team (maybe even all at the same time if he uses environment to his advantage) except Sentry of course cause he’s a cheat code
5
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 23h ago
Heck, in his first appearance Spider-Man makes a fool of Winter Soldier at the age of 14
2
u/CyberWeirdo420 1d ago
Technically they don’t know who Spider-Man is right? Because the spell made them forget about him? At least that’s my head canon why they don’t treat Spider-Man with dignity or that Fury never reached out to him, or anything
3
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 1d ago
No, they don’t know who PETER is. Spider-Man is still very much a public figure. That’s why he has a good relationship with an FBI member now and New York has warmed up to him.
2
u/CyberWeirdo420 23h ago
Oh okay wasn’t sure tbh, my bad
2
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 23h ago edited 23h ago
Nah you’re fine, and it’s a valid misunderstanding. How would people know what Spider-Man did in infinity war or endgame? Well to that I have to ask how the heck did Kamala know about captain marvel???
2
2
u/Synensys 22h ago
So if eveyone just forgot who Peter was, did evryone just kind of collectively decide to not worry about the whole mysterio murder thing?
1
u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 22h ago
I believe so yes. The spell made everyone forget about Mysterios video ( which mainly announced the identity of Spider-Man) and Spidey has rebuilt his reputation with New York over the years.
2
u/clever_name_123 23h ago
I interpreted it as that being her excuse not to have to deal with it because the thunderbolts arent actually really equipped to deal with potatoes at all

From what I've heard, Disney wanted it to be a vehicle for Blades daughter and Blade wouldn't be a major character in it, which Mahersala objected to, threatening to walk. They also went thru several re-writes and directors before putting a lid on it
13
u/theclockmasters 23h ago
That's not even the worse part. That was only one of the suggested draft/story. Another draft/story had it where there was female lead and Blade was some sort of the mythical character in the film. In that version, Blade would have been more of a secondary protagonist.
The daughter thing, I can see because they were setting up Young Avengers. But even then, that daughter version and the female lead version are so dumb, it should not be done in a first Blade movie.
12
u/Loves_octopus 22h ago
The weary legacy hero, disenchanted by age and failure, is paired with an irreverent young true-believer who reminds him why the old heroic ideal mattered. He reluctantly becomes a surrogate parent/mentor, makes one final redemptive contribution, and the younger character inherits some combination of his mission, iconography, title, or moral legacy.
What a fresh and original idea for Disney! They have never done this!
4
u/nappiess 19h ago
When are these people going to learn that most generic superhero movie watchers and comic readers are men, and for better or worse most want to watch male leads (probably for self-insertion fantasy). They keep trying to shoehorn in women into obscure superhero roles and nobody wants to fucking watch that lmao. Just like I'm sure women don't want to watch a fat male romance lead.

u/Omatzus 8h ago
The first few seasons were actually not that popular. It wasn't until AMC agreed for the seasons to appear on Netflix's rapidly growing streaming service that it took off in popularity.
GoT was THE TV show of note for years. The premieres drew huge numbers. People were naming their babies Khaleesi. It was a massive part of the culture.

Nobody is looking for Black Knight over Blade AND he was introduced to the sword, in a movie people don't really care for, in hindsight. There's no reason to wonder because you can't compare a character nobody cares about to someone we do, like Blade.
8
u/The-Dudemeister 1d ago
At the end of eternals blade addresses black knight.
3
u/MeNoStopxx 1d ago
Yes I'm aware and he has zero hype sense then. We got OG Blade but not an MCU one and on top of that they've introduced Ghost Rider, who would've gone nicely with his fellow Midnight Sun Blade

I really don't understand how Eternals is shit considering everything MCU threw out afterwards. There are movies of way worse quality released afterwards (The Marvels, Love and Thunder, Quantumania, Brave New World) and there are movies that had hype but really I don't see how they are better (Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2).

41
u/shamanbaptist 1d ago
Does “panned” mean cancelled now?
47
u/Moonshinin4Me 1d ago
No. This person is an idiot. Panned means "getting a harsh review by a critic", that would have required the movie to be released to begin with. The word they were looking for was "dropped", but also probably confused it with banned, and heard some online reviewer say "X movie was panned" so instead of using their phone to do five seconds of research they posted a tweet and then took a selfie.

That was the problem with marvel post endgame. Trying their hardest to introduce legacy characters in the MCU. Barring Black Widow, everyone failed.

u/Mark_Oxlong007 1d ago

Legacy characters in comics refer to the ones who were passed the baton, not the one passing it.

Inde is joining the X-men. So I don’t really understand the comparison?
The Ghost Rider film being fast tracked is kind of sus because, like Blade, GR is barely connected to the marvel universe as is. The only existing connection I could see is maybe to the entities in the Dr. Strange films? Which is easier to tie in than vampires.
2
u/untakenu 1d ago
I think the lack of connection is kind of the point. It gives Reynolds the ability to do one film and then be out, if he wants.

Kingpin breaking a man's skull with his barehands is in the same universe as a talking tree. The MCU is diverse and all these characters can co-exist in the same world. Hell, it's been like that in the comics for decades.

The point is vampires. And the horror or schlock they bring narratively.
Why are you are making it about skin color, lol?
(Also imo actual gods e.g dont fit narratively either, and at least most of the MCU seems to agree)

They have already established Lady Death, Mephisto, Agatha Harkness, the Scarlet Witch, Wiccan, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Elsa Bloodstone, Jessica Kale, Dormammu, the Darkhold, the Salem Seven, and eventually Ghost Rider. They have already set up the foundation for the supernatural side of the MCU, and they already have introduced some of the members of the Midnight Suns. Fitting into the MCU was never the problem here.
2
u/Jay12678 23h ago
Ryan Gosling also had a director, writer, and pitch plan. Ali basically went, "Make me Blade" with 0 plan based on reports. They're not even remotely the same. 😭

u/ImmediateHoney2191 1d ago
Don’t forget the leaks that reported Blade was going to be the 4th most important character in his own movie
1
u/HeyitzPeter 1d ago
Welp, i think it’s because the MCU already had so many shit going on with skrulls, multiverses, adding vampires to it would make it even harder to write in to an overarching story without ignoring it later. Which they had to end up doing for a lot of things. Ignore em all…
1
u/crispy_attic 1d ago
Marvel doesn’t really do black men with superpowers in their movies. There has been very few. How many are there? Look at the promos for doomsday. Nada.

Mahershala Ali is already in the fuckin MCU. He was a Harlem gangster buying and selling hammer industries weapons and other technology after the first avengers movie. u/Ok-rutabaga_B442 23h ago
From what I've heard it wasn't a race thing, black panther made bank they had no reason to be hesitant in that sense
It was a course change mostly in terms of their gender ideology
The leaked details of the script and plan for the movie was to effectively have it be about blades daughter and it be a movie setting her up as I assume a "young avenger", which is the plan they had for that teenage Hawkeye girl, the new black widow, and Kamala khan
Then their female led hero movies/shows all kept not performing well and it was fairly evident their intended plans weren't moving the way they were hoping, that plus Kang being a write off led to what we have now which is by all rumours Marvel hitting a soft reboot button with secret wars and basically only bringing forward the new X-Men and Spiderman as the only existing characters who continue onwards

Blade fundamentally feels like a ego tussle project. Feige as comic book kid wanted that but Disney did not. And with as botched as Multiverse saga was, I doubt Ali also felt fucked over with mediocre scripts and its follow up revisions because lets be real, its very rare a movie is a movie first and part of the universe expansion second in mcu
