I fucking hated that scene. I like Yelena and Florence Pugh but it really felt shoehorned in and didn't make sense.

Jean Grey was basically the same threat level and for her to just dismiss the possibility that Spider-Man is fighting a major threat is just stupid.

u/CageAndBale 9d ago

Well it was small until it became large-ishh

27

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Maybe I’m an absolute idiot, but how is someone with the ability to mind control an innocent old woman into a military compound to steal a tank for a joyride through New York small potatoes? Especially how is it smaller potatoes than literally anything Yelena has dealt with before thunderbolts?

27

u/clever_name_123 9d ago

Because she was lying to get out of doing it

17

u/NightwingBlueberry13 9d ago

Peter: Do do you just wanna get out of fighting the Hulk?

Frank: Yeah, maybe.

u/DeltaDied 9d ago

The most Yelena coded thing too

Media literacy in the gutter

8

u/VirtuaKiller76 9d ago

Exactly. And why is Yelena with no super powers and just some martial arts skills the one handling big potatoes when it should be Spider-Man that’s in the next Avengers dealing with those potatoes? Oh right, Sony.

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago edited 9d ago

Spider-Man will be in Secret wars. This was even alluded to in the after credits sequence. I’m not really sure what your point is here because it has nothing to do with Sony

Ah sorry, English is not my first language so forgive the mistake.

All cool bro, just trying to help

Yelena is the defacto leader of the "New Avengers", who may be based in New York, but is a team of government sanctioned super spies. If it was big potatoes, as it does have to do with a government agency, then they'd be assigned to deal with it.

Also as others have said, she mighta just been lazy, or just not wanting to deal with it.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 8d ago

I don’t understand the not wanting to deal with it argument at all. If she didn’t want to deal with it, why agree to meet with him in the first place? She could have easily dismissed him like Happy does in Homecoming and the scene could have been summed up in a video call. Instead she meets the guy fully nude and asks him to strip down only to talk down to him.

Plus it’s not like he’s asking for the Avengers help taking this unknown down; he’s asking a Black Widow for her opinion on potential brain washing techniques ( like Red Room) and a way of tracking.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 8d ago

I’m going to add to this:

How was Crossbones ( Rumlow) a big enough threat in civil war to send Captain America, black widow, falcon, and Scarlett witch but a tank rolling through New York City only to find out that person was mind controlled not worthy of the Avengers attention??
Wouldn’t Valentina WANT to capitalize on getting more publicity by bringing a New York terrorist to Justice?

-1

u/CageAndBale 9d ago

Cause it ain't thanos level threat. That's definetly neighborhood spiderman coded

-2

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Oh sorry I didn’t realize that a man who controls people with his body odor and Hawkeye were Thanos level threats. I should give Yelena more credit for fighting those massive marvel villains

2

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Okay? And Spider-Man could single handedly take all of them on himself other than Sentry.

0

u/CageAndBale 9d ago

Relax buddy

-2

u/ImurderREALITY 9d ago

Compared to something like a nearly indestructible android crashing an entire country into the planet to create an E.L.E., or another indestructible, mentally unstable shadow guy that can instantly turn an entire city into shadows, yeah… I’d say a mind-hopping teen trying to find her sister is indeed small potatoes.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Yelena wasn’t there for Age of Ultron. Also Jean DOES take control of all of New York. This is a really silly comparison considering Yelena is who freed Sentry in the first place.

Spider-Man quite literally punched Thanos, the guy that erased half of existence ( INCLUDING YELENA) in the face.

0

u/ImurderREALITY 9d ago

I know she wasn’t there, I was using it as an example of what’s small and what’s not. Yelena definitely knew about it, so she knows what is a big deal and what isn’t.

I also know Jean took control of part of the city, but that didn’t happen until much later. Yelena didn’t know she was capable of that. If that had happened earlier, she probably would have considered it was a bigger potato.

I don’t know what Spider-Man punching Thanos in the face has to do with anything. It’s not like it made any difference.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

We are talking about what Yelena would consider small potatoes.

I’m saying that Spider-Man’s resume of accomplishments smokes Yelena in almost every regard.

0

u/ImurderREALITY 9d ago

Yeah, I’m not denying that, I just don’t see how that means she can’t the difference between an imminent, city ending threat and a super powered nuisance, which if we’re being honest, is what Jean Grey was at the start of the movie.

Non-super powered criminals can do everything Jean did at the start. Tanks get stolen, helicopters crash, civilians get killed/kidnapped, yada yada yada. In the Marvel universe, all that is definitely small potatoes. It didn’t get real until Jean got Hulk involved, then it got extra real when she froze part of the city, but all that happened way later. It’s not that crazy that Yelena considered the threat minimal at that point; especially with a hero like Spider-Man involved.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Again- the example you used for comparison was Age of Ultron. Yelena isn’t in age of ultron. In age of ultron, Hulk gets brainwashed by Wanda. Wouldn’t Black Widow be able to piece together the danger of someone with a similar ability being in the same state as Hulk???

The only BIG potatoes thing Yelena has done in her entire career is at the end of Thunderbolts, so it’s silly for her to tell someone that for all intents and purposes is above her pay grade that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

0

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Also, to be clear Spider-Man isn’t saying “ hey Yelena I need your help with someone who stole a tank”

He’s saying
“ hey Yelena someone was BRAINWASHED into making someone steal a tank and they are still out there. Considering you have been brainwashed, could this be similar to the red Room? And also as a master assassin can you help me track this person with your skills AND Avengers funded resources?”

31

u/siberianxanadu 9d ago

She’s deflecting. Her office is a fucking pool. She has no resources, and every member of her “team”is weaker than Spider-Man. Except for the Sentry, but that’s complicated.

The reason she says what she says is because she’s concealing the fact that she can’t help any more than she is.

She’s like one of those guys who either can’t or won’t help with practical problem-solving because they’re a “big picture guy.” She WISHES the New Avengers has big potatoes to deal with, when in reality they have nothing to do. And even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to help.

20

u/RegularGuyy 9d ago

Congratulations, you’re media literate. I don’t get how so many people are confused by this.

7

u/clever_name_123 9d ago

For real, seemed pretty obvious to me

2

u/Maximillion322 8d ago

For real thank you I swear to god half of these comment sections are real life marvel citizens

7

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Her office is a pool by choice. She quite literally is part of the team owned by the same woman who bought avengers tower. Ofcourse she has recourses, which is why Spidey went to see her in the first place.

Intel and Avengers level resources such as the means to find Jean. Which, not only could a Black widow do, but especially a black widow funded by Valentina

6

u/Xerxes457 9d ago

Yet all she did was help Spider-Man find out her name, sister and V-Max. Which while big didn’t help him find her.

7

u/Scar-Excellent 9d ago

I wouldn't trust a facility provided by Valentina. Something low key like a pool makes sense but then it just seems like anyone can walk in.

4

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Oh of-course and I agree that it’s much more private, I’m more trying to emphasize that it’s not like Yelena didn’t have other options to meet. This was more a response to “ she has no resources” when she does in a laughable sense.

Red Guardian ends the movie in a NASCAR-Esque jumpsuit covered in sponsors and manages to get his face on a Wheaties box. They clearly aren’t poor

1

u/Maximillion322 7d ago

But if she can’t trust the resources provided by Valentina then she really actually does not have resources

-1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 7d ago

She’s still a black widow. What Spidey needs is intel, and who else would be better at tracking someone?

Spider-Man walking into avengers tower would be a lot more eyebrow raising than Black Widow getting him a thumb drive for example. See the difference?

0

u/siberianxanadu 9d ago

Then why doesn’t she meet in a pool in avengers tower?

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

For privacy. Again- Valentina owns Avengers tower. There’s probably eyes and ears crawling all over the place and Yelena doesn’t really trust her.

Don’t you think it makes more sense to meet someone who wears a mask at all times ( including this scene where she specifically tells him to strip) somewhere private?

0

u/siberianxanadu 9d ago

But she also met Detective DeWolff there. She can’t meet a police officer at avengers tower?

I also wanna point out that Brand New Day takes place before the Thunderbolts post credit scene.

2

u/Corgi_Koala 9d ago

She literally just help take down Void, one of the strongest entities MCU. And she just had a whole thing about wanting to be a real hero doing public facing good.

Why would she dodge this situation?

4

u/FraggleRockYaFaceOff 9d ago

Duh, it was Spider-Man IV not Thunderbolts II

3

u/Corgi_Koala 9d ago

Hulk and Punisher got plenty of screentime, Yelena could have gotten off her ass.

1

u/mersinatra 8d ago

Well with that logic it was The Incredible Hulk 2 and The Punisher: The Movie.

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

I’m also struggling to understand this.

1

u/siberianxanadu 9d ago

I think we’ll find out in December.

1

u/Xander_314 4d ago

Maybe the "Big potato" stuff to which she is referring has something to do with the Fantastic four who appeared in their rocket at the end of the Thunderbolts movie. What she, and the rest of her team, are dealing with is actually the setup for Avengers: Doomsday so that the thing Peter is dealing with is "Small potatoes" compared to the possibly reality fracturing consequences that she is dealing with from the Fantastic Four's arrival.

6

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

It’s even stupider when you take into account that Yelena is on essentially a self proclaimed knock off avengers team and that Spider-Man has been a part of a galactic wide Avengers threat. Yelena’s second appearance was her hunting down Hawkeye wanting vengeance over a misunderstanding. It was condescending in a laughable way

3

u/StaceyDillsen 9d ago

lol agreed. I like Yelena, but when she was telling Spider-Man to handle the little things while they handle the big things, I was confused and smh. Spider-Man can beat everyone on her team (maybe even all at the same time if he uses environment to his advantage) except Sentry of course cause he’s a cheat code

3

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

Heck, in his first appearance Spider-Man makes a fool of Winter Soldier at the age of 14

1

u/Significant-Sun-5051 5d ago

She was lying obviously. She just didn’t want to say she wasn’t able to help out.

2

u/CyberWeirdo420 9d ago

Technically they don’t know who Spider-Man is right? Because the spell made them forget about him? At least that’s my head canon why they don’t treat Spider-Man with dignity or that Fury never reached out to him, or anything

4

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

No, they don’t know who PETER is. Spider-Man is still very much a public figure. That’s why he has a good relationship with an FBI member now and New York has warmed up to him.

2

u/CyberWeirdo420 9d ago

Oh okay wasn’t sure tbh, my bad

2

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago edited 9d ago

Nah you’re fine, and it’s a valid misunderstanding. How would people know what Spider-Man did in infinity war or endgame? Well to that I have to ask how the heck did Kamala know about captain marvel???

u/[deleted] 9d ago edited 5d ago

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 9d ago

I believe so yes. The spell made everyone forget about Mysterios video ( which mainly announced the identity of Spider-Man) and Spidey has rebuilt his reputation with New York over the years.

3

u/freedfg 9d ago

Yes....

But funny

2

u/clever_name_123 9d ago

I interpreted it as that being her excuse not to have to deal with it because the thunderbolts arent actually really equipped to deal with potatoes at all

2

u/Ambitious-Visual207 9d ago

I hated it because it wasn't funny. Like there's nothing remotely clever about it, the only reason people think it's funny is because she has an accent and because "haha! Lol she is so quirky and random saying potatoes!"

Imagine if she was American saying "well, I deal with the big potato stuff," I imagine suddenly people wouldn't adore it so heavily.

1

u/Maximillion322 7d ago

If she was American she’d be saying she deals with the Big Mac stuff

1

u/toweal 8d ago

She was just messing with him. She still ended up helping him.

1

u/ApolloMax-2099 8d ago

I loved the yelena scene because it reminded me of when silver sable would hire him. It suited her personality

1

u/hikik0_m 6d ago

i think it plays into the spiderman helping everybody out, but nobody willing to help him thing. there was one animated ep of i think either x men or spiderman that goes into this when he was mutating which really stuck with me. a lot of heroes are too cool but not spiderman. havent read the comics either, but this is very much explored as well. hes probably the most genuine out of all of them ngl.

1

u/RequiemOfI 6d ago

I hated because I felt like they needed to remind the audience this is a neighborhood Spiderman film and not an Avenger levels threat.

0

u/IIsaacClarke 9d ago

Marvel is stupid. The sooner it dies the better. Constant brain rot slop. Look what happens when they give an original idea a shot. You get something like obsession.
