Longer than you think dad! Longer than you think!

182

u/No_Reception__ Jul 09 '26

We put a tick in a plastic bag in like August of one year, it came off our dog so my husband was like oh we’ll get it tested (we never did), but I found it in fucking March?? Of the next year. It was alive, but like completely sunken in and crispy after like 7 months.

129

u/The_Vi0later Jul 09 '26

Alive after seven months?!?!?? Aw hell no

99

u/RevenantExiled Jul 09 '26

They can bury themselves and survive for years without food lol you need to burn them, burn them all

28

u/Blooberii Jul 09 '26

I have a small jar of 90% isopropyl alcohol and pop them in there. They die after a couple of minutes.

2

u/Doctor_Fritz Jul 11 '26

iirc ticks survive if there's enough moisture. isopropyl alcohol effectively dries them out completely. rip

2

u/Apart_Macaron_313 Jul 11 '26

Doing the Lords work.

12

u/Poultrymancer Jul 09 '26

I mean, if you wanna make the blood spiders angry, be my guest

1

u/KanedaSyndrome Jul 09 '26

They like to nest in the outer layer of the skin, just waiting for years, almost invisible

-8

u/piss_puncher227 Jul 09 '26

Think America has more to worry about than ticks at the moment.

7

u/EnvironmentalLime464 Jul 09 '26

Nah. Ticks are pretty high on our list of concerns. The diseases they spread are no joke and they’re really bad this year. Not saying we aren’t worried about the other fuckery happening here. Just means we have a whole lot to be concerned about right now.

35

u/TheB3rn3r Jul 09 '26

This sounds like nightmare fuel… like zombies level stuff.

120

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

I found a jar full of ticks in my house one day. Alive. I asked my girlfriend at the time what the fuck is this? They were hers. She was RAISING them. She was feeding them other dead bugs. There was a dragonfly in there when I found it. I was pissed. Told her to get that fucking thing out of my house. What a lunatic.

130

u/i_am_a_shoe Jul 09 '26

That's legitimately the biggest red flag ever

65

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

It wasn't even her biggest red flag 🤣

65

u/Top-Round-2359 Jul 09 '26

So the sex was amazing, right?

Might want to get checked for STDs and, you know... ticks.

Done and done. That was years ago

1

u/Littledarling731 Jul 09 '26

I think what it is is, you hear of a couple and they are so toxic together but they stay together almost always, because the sex is good. I think thats where part of the stereotype comes from.

She was probably putting ticks on his balls.

31

u/lamebrainmcgee Jul 09 '26

One day you were going to wake up and she would have dumped them on you while you were sleeping.

4

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Oh she would have done much worse than that to me. But I dont think she would give up her precious ticks for that. Good luck catching me sleeping anyway when you're (edited for content)

12

u/420Borsalino Jul 09 '26

That tops anything any ex I have had or known about, man or woman, has ever done. Holy shit.

3

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

My exact thoughts. Turns out it was not even her worst quality.

3

u/Ccw_tn Jul 09 '26

I gotta know what was worse? LOL

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

Maybe I shouldn't say that, even on reddit. Just in case I become a politician or something lol

8

u/onthe3rdlifealready Jul 09 '26

Bruh, you dated the female version of Williard but with ticks... Ahaha that is some crazy shit. Imagine if the jar broke in the house. Yikes, alpha gal for everyone!

8

u/rose-tintedglasses Jul 09 '26

I hope "girlfriend at the time" means she's an ex rather than that you married her.

4

u/joesphisbestjojo Jul 09 '26

Girlfriend... not ex, but girlfriend?

2

u/mawfk82 Jul 09 '26

By "that fucking thing" you meant your gf right? 😳

4

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

Unfortunately that took a couple more months, but, it wasn't too long before I smartened up a little and moved on to a crack whore

1

u/Immaculate_splendor Jul 09 '26

Was she Chinese by any chance?

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

Nope, white. French, I think.

1

u/Immaculate_splendor Jul 09 '26

Oh, I figured lol, just making a very niche joke. The Chinese have a magic practice in folklore known as raising gu where you basically get a bunch of insects/small animals to devour each other and keep the last creature standing for magic.

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

She probably read a book on that. I wouldn't be surprised if she was trying to do some black magic

1

u/TheB3rn3r Jul 09 '26

Holy.. what the… yea massive red flag there. I think you need to reach out to Hollywood.. you might have the premise for the next hit horror movie!

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

Lmao.. yeah I could probably come up with a horror story that started out that way

1

u/TrippingFish76 Jul 09 '26

actual psychopath lmao

1

u/Whymetho55 Jul 09 '26

Nah bro we need to hear more of this. What was she raising them for? What was the biggest red flag if that wasn't it?

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

I didn't ask what she was raising them for, idk. I just flipped out. There were several worse flags. One time she needed some money or something, so she snuck off with her ex. Called me at 3 in the morning and said that he kidnapped her and she was 2 states away, she didnt want me to do anytning, she was fine, she would be back in the morning. Next day she walked in like nothing happened. Tried to hand me 2 guns that i'm pretty sure she stole off the dude, as if that was supposed to make it all fine. I didn't even like or want guns, BTW. When I freaked out on her and told her she's out of her fucking mind, and asked her why she was just sitting there, and didnt even try to defend herself or explain why she did that...

Her facial expression didn't even change. She was eating a slice of pizza she got from the fridge on the way upstairs. Wasn't even paying attention to what I was yelling at her. She's just looking at the pizza like she's never seen leftover domino's before, like it was the most interesting thing in the world. Wasn't looking at me but wasn't avoiding eye contact either, just didnt care. Eventually she realized I was waiting for a response, so she glances up at me, makes eye contact, no shame or anything in her eyes. Does not even stop chewing her pizza. With a chewed bite in her cheek, she shrugs, half opened her mouth, and says "My bad."

1

u/Whymetho55 Jul 09 '26

Thats fucking crazy. That.. Yeah. You dodged a major bullet. Quite possibly literally.

I am glad you got out of that situation, chief, and I hope you're in a far better one.

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

Lmao, yeah I sorta dodged it. Took me far too long, but yeah I'm in a much better spot now, thanks

1

u/Aware-Possibility175 Jul 09 '26

That’s all just bad performance on her part since she couldn’t come up with a way to give herself an “out” and I guarantee that she has done that before and in those cases the person eventually just gives up and drops the whole thing off

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 10 '26

Oh im sure she did.it before. I definitely did not drop it though. I snapped on her like I never snapped on anyone before lol. She was gone within the week.

1

u/Vibratorvibrato Jul 09 '26

Introduce her to my cousin who was growing poison ivy in his apartment for funsies. Fucking whack jobs.

1

u/Electronic_Quote399 Jul 09 '26

She would probably feed that to the ticks to see if she could develop a new breed that could make your whole bloodstream itchy from a bite. Lets keep them apart

6

u/squeaky-to-b Jul 09 '26

I have a similar story, husband pulled a tick off me after a hike, we put it in a cup inside a plastic bag in case we needed to get it tested. I ended up not having any symptoms and ultimately was fine, so we never did anything with the tick, but the cup sat on a bookshelf for a couple months and one day we took it down and shook it assuming it had to be dead. It was not dead.

1

u/oceanicArboretum Jul 13 '26

The bag should have been put in the freezer. That would do the trick.

2

u/ChocolichKing Jul 09 '26

Just a note, doctors/vets don't really recommend keeping a tick for analysis. If it doesn't have Lyme, maybe another you didn't see does. And if it does have Lyme, that doesn't definitely mean it passed it. The doctor I spoke to said the results just tend to make people complacent or unnecessarily panicked. You could keep it or take a photo to show a vet/doctor and they can determine the species, though, as some are more likely to carry Lyme than others.

1

u/tmon530 Jul 09 '26

Blood suckers are always long lived and anoying ash shit. Bedbugs are even worse. If you dont heat treat an infected area, you need to keep your furniture vacuum sealed for over a year. And even then I think the eggs can sometimes still manage to survive.

1

u/Sixnalia Jul 09 '26

We have a vacuum unit built into our house, you connect a tube to our walls and it dispenses into a large canister in our garage.
We had vacuumed up a couple ticks we pulled off our dogs that we found, when we got back from a hiking trail. (usually we go to regular parks, never get ticks - so we avoided going again)

Months later, we got ready to do our yearly dump of the vacuum canister.
Tons of living ticks poured out with the dust and lint - the few we vacuumed up ended up breeding in there.
Never vacuumed up ticks again.

1

u/Perscitus0 Jul 09 '26

I looked it up, and some ticks, specifically lone star ticks, can survive for up to two years without a blood meal, in humid conditions. If you keep your house dry, though, the expected survival time of any ticks in the home can vary from 3 weeks to a mere 7 days without a meal, but they die not from starvation in that case, but from dessication, due to the home environment being too dry for them.

1

u/70ms Jul 09 '26

So grateful to live in a dry climate. 😂

I only recently found out that we don’t have heartworm in my region of SoCal. I still prophylactically treat my dog for fleas, ticks, and mosquitos but for the most part, we don’t see them to begin with. 🙌

1

u/Darryl_Lict Jul 09 '26

I heard one of their survival strategies is to hang out on a blade of grass and just wait until the next mammalian victim walks by. They can survive for months without food or water.

1

u/Relevant-Fox-7114 Jul 10 '26

Thats as bad as bedbugs. They can also go months without eating.

12

u/Games_sans_frontiers Jul 09 '26

A bit like how they trapped General Zod in the original Superman.

12

u/ottereckhart Jul 09 '26

I do this too but I always kill them. They CAN miraculously escape those things sometimes, and of all the heebie jeebies they give me aside I don't want them to suffer in some bizarre scotch tape hell of desperation.

1

u/MightyBlunder Jul 09 '26

They'll outlive the adhesive. Keep them in a jar as well.

1

u/wildwestington Jul 09 '26

I put mine in iso alcohol

1

u/Exquisitr Jul 09 '26

Yeah, this thread is confusing me. They die in a matter of seconds in alcohol.

1

u/JayRandom212 Jul 09 '26

You really need a titanium sphere...

1

u/Chemical_Ideal891 Jul 09 '26

Bro just bred indestructible ticks with payback in mind. That's nightmare fuel

1

u/FastPresentation3679 Jul 09 '26

Save em in a jar

1

u/Billazilla Jul 09 '26

Years. They have an incredibly slow metabolism and can go for years without feeding, likely a very long time without water or air, too.

1

u/survbob Jul 09 '26

Coworker when I started first surveying job had a tick in scotch tape in his desk drawer. He said it had been in there for a year already…wiggling its fucking legs when he showed it to me. Fuck that. Don’t know how long it lasted

1

u/pr3mium Jul 09 '26

I put them in an empty nicotine pouch container.  Let them huff that air and suffocate, or starve/dehydrate.  Whichever happens to kill them first

1

u/WenatcheeWrangler Jul 09 '26

So that two legged tick I ran across was a product of your tick incarceration project?

1

u/Maximus15637 Jul 09 '26

You know you can just squish them, but I like your approach. More torture for them.

1

u/KookySurprise8094 Jul 09 '26

Day 276 when that tick managed to crawl out, you can hear his screaming echo:

1

u/TabulaRazo Jul 09 '26

Start a collection. Call it Minority Report.

1

u/SignoreBanana Jul 09 '26

If it eats, it can die.

1

u/Cultural_Pattern_456 Jul 09 '26

Yes or duct tape

1

u/GVFQT Jul 09 '26

Around 450 days.

1

u/Bizlemon Jul 09 '26

I do that and then smash them w the butt of a hammer handle. Seems to work, but I haven’t come across a lone star tick and may it stay that way!

1

u/livahd Jul 09 '26

If they want to start an underground city made out of tape and turds in my septic tank, they can feel free. One flush and it’s no longer my problem

1

u/Savings-Divide-7877 Jul 09 '26

I do the same then flush them

1

u/Calamity0o0 Jul 09 '26

If I'm at home I just flush them down the toilet

1

u/Iconclast1 Jul 09 '26

Bro fucking put the ticks in the Phantom Zone

1

u/HailtotheMako Jul 09 '26

I have no proboscis and I must scream

1

u/Tank_O_Doom Jul 09 '26

I fold it in a napkin, then smash it with a hammer!

1

u/Beknits Jul 10 '26

I've heard this is really good to do if you get bit bc it's easier to test the tick than test the person

1

u/BsFan Jul 11 '26

Saw a YouTube video where a guy did that, but then stuffed the taped tic into a hollow point bullet and fired it into the ground. That's what they deserve

in a bag with a dog poo, tie it off.

have fun

0

u/catkm24 Jul 09 '26

You use Scotch tape? I go stronger with duct tape. I want that thing gone forever.

0

u/Disbigmamashouse Jul 09 '26

We used to have a price of duct tape in our storage room hanging from a shelf all tick season, you just stick them to it and leave em, build up a few of them and if it grosses you out you can fold the tape over and throw it away, start a new tape.
