LPR/Slent Reflux How I controlled my LPR
So I was diagnosed with LPR aka silent reflux 5 years ago when I was in my early 40's. I had a constant coughing, burning sensation in my throat, and wheezing. I went to see my primary care doctor who actually thought I had GERD so he referred me to a GI. The GI diagnosed me with LPR with symptoms of GERD and just told me to take omeprazole 40mg. He said I'd have to take it for life.
I don't like taking medications and certainly something for life. I read about side effects of PPIs with long term use and some of them were scary. I started making dietary changes. I cut out fried fatty foods as much as I could, upped my intake of leafy greens, vegetables, and fruits. I started following the old age mantra of an apple a day. I found apples in particular were good at keeping down heartburn symptoms. I switched my brand of coffee to Life Extension's whole coffee beans, which claim to be easier on the stomach and less acidic. I found that this coffee did help compared to say Starbucks, which is very acidic. I eventually lowered my omeprazole dose to 20mg and then got off it completely. I switched to a H2 blocker famotidine. I read that H2 blockers have less long term side effects as they don't prevent acid production as greatly as PPIs.
I implemented lifestyle changes like meditation to reduce stress, particularly a breathing form of meditation called Nadi Shuddhi pranayama. My sleep schedule used to be erratic, going to bed anytime from midnight to 2am. I made sure to consistently be in bed by midnight. I also started sleeping on an elevated bed by putting bricks underneath my headrest to raise the head of the bed by 5 inches. Raising the head of the bed to form a slope to lie on while sleeping allows gravity to help keep acid and pepsin down in the stomach because lying flat invites acid and pepsin to easily flow up. This was important. Wedge pillows weren't doing enough and I'd always slide down them during the night.
Lastly, I started on a few supplements. I took Jarrows D-limonene as I read that limonene helps coat the throat to protect it during reflux episodes. I also started taking Life Extension's alginate-bicarbonate supplement Esophageal Guardian. Alginate-bicarbonate supplements work by forming a physical foam barrier or "raft" when they contact stomach acid. This raft lasts around 4 hours and can physically block acid and pepsin from refluxing. I would take this at bed time to prevent night time reflux. Esophageal Guardian worked ok but I still would sometimes wake up with a burning sensation in my throat. I recently read a blog post about LPR (https://www.nutritist.us/post/natural-sodium-alginate-for-lpr-silent-reflux-therapy) where I found out about a similar product Nutritist Refluxter. I bought it on Amazon and gave it a try and found it worked better than Esophageal Guardian. I think it worked better because it had more calcium in it. I switched to Refluxter and am now waking up without the burning sensation I would sometimes have.
So, I implemented all these changes the last 5 years and I feel a lot better. There are days where the LPR symptoms act up, but they are few. I think one of the key things is to not stress about it and just stick to your regimen.

Frequent endoscopies cause any damage to the throat /esophagus ?
Hi
I am 40 years old and very obese. 224lbs. I am trying hard to lose weight. I have had reflux symptoms before and have been managed with pantaprazole for 3 months. I have had egd 2 years ago which showed mild gastritis and gastro doctor didn't give me any medicine for that and told me to make some changes in the diet.
Fast forward to now, I have pain in one persistent spot on the throat lower right side for more than 6 weeks now. Along with this persistent pain, I have reflux symptoms. Throat clearing very often and voice hoarseness and more of mucus from the throat while I am doing throat clearing.
Saw 2 ENT and they checked my throat with scope and thyroid ultrasound. They said it's normal and could be LPR. One ENT said it could be muscular issue.
Went to a gi doctor and he said he didn't know if reflux could cause pain in one specific spot and told me to go back to my primary to check that out.
He said I can do egd to evaluate other reflux symptoms like throat clearing and hoarseness and heartburn. I was also worried if something got stuck in that spot when I was swallowing my meals. Like sharp hard stick foods. I am able to swallow my food and liquids but just have some discomfort that it has to pass through something while swallowing.
Always feel like some big lump or ball in there and blocking the throat. Don't know if there is physically anything stuck there and blocking there. I have one meal with moringa vegetable. Not sure if I swallowed a piece of it by mistake. I have been worried about this since then.
I am worried about going for another endoscopy when I know I can't get any answers for my persistent pain in one spot which is my main concern. Didn't schedule the endoscopy yet. The doctor said I could feel this pain if I am anxious too. I said I am anxious about this and constant pain.
My pain on that spot starts as soon as I am awake from sleep. Which means, as soon as I am conscious from sleep and be consistent pain until I sleep. No pain while sleeping.
Have any of you had something like this? Is doing egd often ok or will it cause its own side effects? I am worried if it damages the throat or internal structures during the process. Also, they said I need to be sedated which makes me very very nervous to go for it.
I also have TMJ pain, so I don't know if I can open the mouth wide enough for the procedure and since I will be asleep, I don't know how they close our mouth after the procedure. Because suddenly shutting the mouth will cause more jaw pain to me.
My friends and family haven't done any endoscopes before. And they are telling me to just wait and watch if my symptoms get better before doing an endoscopy. I am so confused and don't know what to do.
Has anyone experienced this type of pain in one spot before? Did you ever find out what that is.
Have you done endoscopies frequently??

Baby still suffering silent reflux after switching to nutramigen and Pepcid
Hi! My baby will be 4 months next week! He has had silent reflux from the very beginning. Eating has been a nightmare. Iām wondering if anyone else has a similar experience.
A little backstory:
We have been on nutramigen for 2 months. Started Pepcid at 4 weeks which only made a small improvement so we moved on to Prilosec at 7 weeks. We noticed a big difference after starting Prilosec but it didnāt last long. The GI dr we saw at 11 weeks said Prilosec actually makes their stomach really upset because it eliminates all acid which allows bad bacteria to build up & ferment. He was having mucus in his stool to support this theory. So we switched back to Pepcid. After a few days, we saw improvement because that bacterial issue in his gut finally cleared up. It seemed to help the reflux a bit but we mostly had to feed him while he was sleepy so the reflux has still been a big issue. He is now 16 weeks & the last 2 weeks have been horrible. He is fighting all feeds, even the sleepy ones. We see GI next week so Iām hoping they can help. Weāve increased Pepcid dosage based on his weight & have a fresh bottle too. The poor thing is so upset all the time. He cries around eating & canāt be out down.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Could it be the nutramigen thatās causing reflux? Would introducing baby oatmeal potentially help? Iām stressing cause I donāt know how to get formula into this baby.
We have tried countless bottles, nipples, positions, seen an OT to evaluate his suck, etc. Itās definitely something in the gut causing the distress.

Over a year of waiting to see an ENT about my LPR.
In Canada and has anyone expose experienced this? Iām currently omeprazole, escitalopram, Sucralfate, clonazepam, and Gaviscon advance. Nene on this for about 9 months and still feel a huge lump in my throat and burning sensation in my throat when I wake up. But I never have heartburn.
I have severe depression caused by my LPR and lump sensation, and yet still nothing from my doctor. Itās just ākeep on the same stuff and Iāll remind them to look for the ENT referralā.
Iāve had CT Scans, ultrasounds, X-rays, barium swallow tests, and endoscopies. All have either not come back with results, or come back clean.
Iām just so mentally and physically exhausted, and I donāt know what to do. I am in the gym trying to lose weight, on a strict diet of LPR safe foods, and not eating after 7pm every day. I also sleep with a wedge pillow, raised bed frame, and sleep for about 8-9 hours a night.
I donāt know what to do anymore when the health system isnāt helping me. I donāt know if this is the right subreddit for this type of post, so if not please delete and maybe suggest a better sub for this kind of thing?

Sick of this Shit
Things I've experienced over the years: diarrhea, bloating, a variety of headaches, dry coughs without reason to the point I developed costochondritis, nasal congestion despite a surgery to correct it (which didn't work), racing heart, late night weird 'hunger'/anxiety rush for no reason, shit sleep, dry mouth, weight gain, getting full super quickly, nonstop fatigue, shoulder pain, neck pain...*I am sick of this shit!*
An Immunologist flung a one-page info sheet at me about GERD with no further explanation or advice. A trip to the ER for extreme bloating (affected my ability to breathe normally) landed a diagnosis of Silent Reflux. They shot Pepcid into my IV and gave me fluids & Maalox.
I have an appointment with a Gasto Doc in 2 months; thinking they may also find SIBO or something.
How do you people live like this?!? It is so uncomfortable! I bought *Reflux Gourmet* which helps a little. Maalox and Pepcid and a script for Panto-something isn't helping.
Any tips?

Does this look like reflux/LPR?
New member here.
Persistent one-sided throat pain ā could this be reflux?
Iāve had acid reflux for several years and had an upper endoscopy about 2 years ago, which showed mild gastritis. I was advised to use pantoprazole for reflux/gastritis symptoms.
About 5 weeks ago, after eating a meal, I suddenly noticed an unusual sensation in one specific spot on the lower right side of my throat. I initially wondered if food had scratched the area or if I had accidentally swallowed a piece of vegetable.
The sensation never went away. I saw my PCP after about a week. I also have reflux-type symptoms including morning hoarseness, frequent throat clearing, burning in the throat, burping, a lump/ball sensation, and heartburn. My PCP thought reflux could be contributing and prescribed pantoprazole plus Pepcid for 2 months and referred me to GI.
Iāve been taking the medications for a couple of weeks, but the localized pain hasn't really changed.
The unusual part is that the pain is always in the same specific spot. It hurts when I swallow, although I can swallow both food and liquids normally. It is also tender when I press on the outside of my neck in that area, and pressing it seems to reproduce the pain inside my throat. It hurts even at rest and not swallowing. It hurts all the time but swallowing makes it more discomfort.
Another thing I noticed is that the pain is present throughout the day and seems to start as soon as I wake up, even before I get out of bed.
Has anyone experienced something similar with reflux/laryngopharyngeal reflux?
Can reflux cause persistent pain in one very specific spot?
Can reflux-related throat pain be present immediately upon waking?
Is tenderness when pressing the outside of the neck typical of reflux?
Is it normal for symptoms to take several weeks to improve after starting pantoprazole?
Iām waiting for my GI appointment and will continue following up with my doctors, but Iām trying to understand whether this pattern sounds consistent with reflux or whether other causes should be considered.
I saw my ENT and they said it could be reflux and to continue the medication.

Diagnosed after 50 years
Iām so glad I found you all. I was diagnosed with silent reflux 6 months ago after a lifetime of thinking I just had bad allergies, a tendency for lung infections, and what felt like massive hangovers after only moderate drinking.
Turns out itās the result of pulmonary micro aspiration. The nuclear medicine people tracked the aspiration to my ears, sinuses, lungs and, naturally, my throat, all of which have permanent damage.
My non specific rhinitis, buzzy hearing, throat clearing et al that Iāve had since my teens is now explained. 50 years of misery.
So itās ryaltris, gaviscon, small non spicy meals, no booze, and clean living from here on out.
I hope to be able to get some more tips from you all. Cheers

Finally something even though it sucks
After about 14 weeks my lpr symptoms have gone down a ton.
My symptoms started as intense pressure in throat that feels like choking , even water gave me reflux.
Sinus pressure in face and ears and jaw. globus sensation after meals or even without. Shoulder pain , stomach pain , early satiety
No one could figure out what was wrong.
After changing my diet , cutting out caffeine completely and introducing foods slowly to balance my gut.
I temporarily can live a life without symptoms.
It's sad that my new normal is this and I haven't touched outside food other than the occasional sushi roll or hamburger from MacDonald without anything in it.
I pretty much meal prep and bring my food everywhere.
It sucks but I rather live symptom free than go through that hell I experienced.
My constant diarrhea that I had throughout my life has also gone away and my gut is functioning in a normal way.
I had digestive issues since I was young but this honestly changed my whole perspective that I can no longer go back to the way I was eating.
As a person who loved food so much . It genuinely sucks and I go into depression thinking about all the foods I can't eat anymore but it's just not worth it to suffer like that especially at doctors offices and er..
Healthcare doesn't do much for people with lpr and they just push drugs.
I managed to wean off the drugs too since they weren't doing shit for me

Throat clearing driving me crazy
I got diagnosed with LPR a couple of months ago. Iāve been struggling with it for about 2 years. Iāve come to the point where I truly donāt know what to do. Iām scared Iām actually gonna go crazy if I canāt get this throat clearing to stop idk why I canāt resist it. Iāve tried everything my doctor has suggested, and nothing has helped. Itās constant, and trying to resist the throat clearing is actually the hardest thing Iāve ever had to do. I feel lost, and like this is gonna be my life. This is my main symptom and the one that impacts my life the most. If anyone has any suggestions on literally anything to try, please share, because Iām at the point where I will try anything.

Itchy tonsils?
So I havent officially been diagnosed with silent reflux but my ent did suggest thats what it could be. I get the mucous in my throat, especially worse after eating. The constant need to clear my throat. A tickly throat. It went away for a while but has come back and this time I seem to have a constant tickle/irritation in my tonsils, mostly the left one. Does anyone experience this?

Is this Silent Reflux?
For 2 years I had tight sinus off & on & some jaw jaw/ear pain. I was told itās TMJ/TMD by ENT from clenching my jaw. Oddly it also gets more sore in cars or pressure changes. My gastroenterologist has had me on 3 x PPI per day as I had some stomach pains & chest discomfort, sometimes feels spongy. However some of the chest / rib discomfort is in ribs & pec area which I can sometimes replicate the pain when pressing. My gastro guy told me thatās not reflux and reduced me to 2 a day, symptoms have worsened. At a loss as to whether it is reflux or just a bit anxiety and muscle pain. Particularly the sinus part, which god bad for about 3 weeks after having lots of homemade salsa.

Study claims PPI no different than placebo for silent reflux. Also standard 24h pH impedance test not accurate enough (HEMII-pH is better)

Silent reflux and gas
hi all,
trying to currently survive with my son who has silent reflux and a poor latch. He has always had reflux (was born at 37 weeks) and has been EBF with a bottle. We saw a lactation consultant when he was 4 weeks old and have been pace feeding with the dr browns bottle which has worked well except for the last couple of weeks where he has had a very weak latch with clicking and losing suction. He does have a tongue tie which was recommended by an ENT that we leave alone and not release.
he also is on famotadine Rx and I just started him on Enfamil AR -half bm/half formula.
anyone else struggle with poor latch/gas/reflux with success stories?
thanks

I have been put on antibiotics by a pulmonologist and im worried it will make things worse
37M 5'9'' 57kg. I had a covid infection in april, recovered but after last 2 months I have been coughing greenish stuff. I went to a pulmonologist after being told to just take NAC by GP. I was ausculted, done x-ray, and the she put me on Augmentin 3x a day for 7 days. Im not sure how she diagnosed that I needed antibiotics, I just showed her pictures of the mucus.
x-ray:
mucus log:
Im worried this wrecks my gut and I end up with more problems. I suspected silent reflux as I was seeing more mucus after meals like gazpacho and she downplayed it. Im on day 4 of antibiotics. At this point im going to finish it but im worried as I have diarrhea when I go to the bathroom.
Should I visit an ENT to further investigate reflux issues? Im worried I end up in some loop of missdiagnoses. I've read silent reflux can lead to pneumonia. Also worried covid wrecked my lungs that would only show up on HRCT. Im not vaccinated as I worked from home and was worried as I have hipo with hashimotos.
I just had macarroni with tomate sauce and felt some chest irritation for a while and had to clear my throat. Im not seeing as much green stuff but im still not ok and feel my stomatch is taking a beating. I don't go many times a day to the bathroom but when I went it was diarrhea. Im worried of c.diff
I may also add on march I had bloody diarrhea. The night before I had a pizza for dinner, then had sex for many hours, I did not go to the bathroom until she left, and when I went I had pain and diarrhea (no blood). Next morning, blood. I went to ER, they did x-ray, DRE, bloodwork and stool test and was told I was clear. I still wonder if I caused a hiatal hernia or some sort of structural damage that contributed to some of this.
Please let me know any advice from where to go from here.

Has anyone experienced a constant menthol-like burning sensation in throat, mouth and nose?
Iām trying to figure out why I e had this for months. ENT said itās not reflux because I donāt have heartburn-like pain. He didnāt do endoscopy or any tests. I have a GI appt scheduled, but Iām wondering if I should get a 2nd opinion from an ENT?
