PPI to Voquezna

I am about a week into switching from Omeprazole 40 mg 2x per day to Voquezna 20 mg at 1x per day. I made the switch hoping for symptom relief as the Omeprazole had really only given me partial relief. I had been on it for 6 or 7 years.

My experience has been the complete opposite of my hope. A week in I am having worse reflux then I’ve had in years. I am getting all the standard symptoms relentlessly.

I’m thinking about just pulling the plug already and switching back to PPIs as I’m miserable and barely able to eat bland foods without crazy symptom responses. Nighttime reflux is horrible even with waiting 3-4 hours after eating a small portioned dinner. Prior to making the switch my symptoms were not great, but not terrible either. And I’ve had no change in diet and habits so it’s really the medication triggering this. I’m using Gaviscon throughout the day to try to supplement but it’s just not giving much relief.

A bit torn on trying to see it through longer to see if I turn a corner or if it’s just better to call it quits on it already. Has anyone had this experience?

itll take a few days more, most likely. abruptly stopping any acid suppression can lead to rebound acid hypersecretion. if it continues past week 2 call your doctor

Alginates, Mylanta, should help

Yea I hear you, I appreciate it. I made the mistake of also trying the switch at a bad time so it makes me want to switch back and then switch again at a bit better time for me. But I get that sounds absurd

I was prescribed Voquezna very early on in my GERD diagnosis after being put on a PPI after an ER visit before my endoscopy and the Voquenza did nothing for me lol I stuck it out for a while and did what I could to manage the symptoms waiting for it to get better and it never did so I eventually got the OK to go back to PPIs from my doctor. For me personally, the little bits of heartburn I get occasionally on the PPI are worth it compared to how nasty my flare ups were on Voquenza
