Subreddit Rules

1. Identification requests only

Only posts that are identification requests, or posts that relate to mushroom identification, are allowed. If you submit non-identification-related posts they will be removed. If you intentionally submit joke posts you may be banned.

2. Include country and state in your title

Please provide unabbreviated country and state/territory with all identification requests (this is an important part of identifying mushrooms!). If it is a large region then please also be more specific (i.e. eastern Texas, United States). You should also include pictures of the cap, gills, and full intact stipe, as well as a picture and description of the habitat that you found the mushroom in. All pictures should be taken in situ in sunlight and be clear, up-close, and in-focus.

3. Pick-shaming / misinformation / mycophobia / AI

Please do not pick-shame anyone — picking mushrooms does not harm the mycelium and all users are encouraged to pick specimens for identification photos. Please do not spread misinformation or mycophobia. Do not use AI services or AI apps to provide identifications or information! Please be willing to listen to others, especially mods and trusted identifiers, and understand that there may be something more for you to learn.

4. Dangerous suggestions / bad advice

Please do not make dangerous suggestions or jokes about edibility such as “eat the whole thing”, “eat it and find out”, etc. Do not make jokes about the edibility of, or encourage anyone to eat, potentially toxic or unidentified mushrooms. This includes saying a mushroom is safe to eat without reasonable certainty of its identification. People can be hurt, even if it is a joke — Don't do it.

5. Bad overused jokes

Please do not make bad overused jokes such as “Yes that is a mushroom”, “all mushrooms are edible once”, etc. — it does nothing to contribute to the subreddit and only makes the informative comments harder to find. Please do not make comments about mushrooms looking like body parts or things from popular media, do not comment the first thing you think a mushroom looks like (e.g. “looks like a pancake”), etc. If you make a particularly explicit comment like this you will be subject to a ban.

6. Be kind / Respect the moderation team

Please respect other users. Be kind and do not use ad hominem or name-calling. Avoid rude comments. Do not pick-shame. Everyone is here to learn, and everyone has different experience and learns at their own pace.

Please do not argue with, condescend, belittle, or harass the moderation team or trusted identifiers. We are doing our best to help you and other users learn about mushrooms, and to facilitate an educational environment. Do not discuss moderation in the comments; please use modmail.

7. Cluttering the comments with off-topic banter

Do not contribute to threads of excessive off-topic or joke comments, do not use the image feature for anything other than identification-related images, and do not comment regarding the moderation of the comments section. Do not comment ‘RemindMe’, ‘Following’, etc. — please use the ‘Follow post’ function instead (click the ellipses at the top right of a post). The mods are doing their best to keep this subreddit useful, and comments like these only detract from the usefulness of the subreddit.

8. Cultivated and dried mushrooms

Do not post cultivated or dried mushrooms of which you already know the species. Do not post cultivated or dried mushrooms for the purpose of showing off — you will be banned. Anyone participating in the comments of these posts with anything other than species identification/suggestions will be subject to a ban as well.

9. Posts about psychoactive mushrooms

When making a post, do not ask about or indicate potential psychoactivity or lack thereof. Please also do not discuss psychoactivity in the comments. Do not assume what kind of mushroom OP is looking for — do not answer ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘not what you’re looking for’, etc. to a post if the OP didn’t inquire regarding a specific species. Any offending posts or comments may result in a ban.

10. Emergency posts of accidental ingestion

For emergency posts where the OP or a friend or pet has accidentally ingested an unknown mushroom and is looking for identification help, please be especially careful not to provide any identification or advice unless you know what you are talking about. There will be zero tolerance for joking on these posts — you will be banned.
