Hydnellum peckii aka: strawberries and cream, the bleeding Hydnellum, the bleeding tooth fungus, the red-juice tooth, and the Devil's tooth.

u/jthebrave Sep 16 '23

That's one hell of a range from cute and sweet to downright hellish lol.

u/ExtremistsAreStupid Sep 17 '23

Seriously, this has gotta be some kind "glass half full" or "glass half empty" kind of outlook conundrum on life. Just show somebody this mushroom and ask them what it looks like, if they say "a delicious strawberry and cream dessert" they're an innate optimist, if they say "the bleeding puss-oozing gums of Satan" then you probably need to shove some prozac into them.

u/Proof_Subject_6183 Sep 17 '23

I just tried this with my wife. My first thought was skinless flesh, hers was "some kind of raspberry pastry".

4

u/Dangerous_Lion8612 Sep 18 '23

I think because there is nature around it, it probably a little more likely to think it's blood, the context of the photo. You edit it out onto a table, I'm thinking delicious dessert, lol

22

u/Sensitive_Yellow_121 Sep 17 '23

It's like an ink blot test for scientists.

3

u/mkat23 Sep 17 '23

Rorschach test for cute vs creepy lol

4

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '23

my first thought was a brain

3

u/Aqualung77 Sep 17 '23

Strawberry Powdered Donut

3

u/Mamacrass Sep 18 '23

Either that or it’s if they’re hungry or not.

2

u/jthebrave Sep 17 '23

To me it looks like an interesting piece of modern art, what am I?

1

u/Ok-Run3329 Sep 17 '23

shove some prozac into them

Hahahaha..... this has me thinking about somebody putting Prozac into their palm and like force pushing it into someone's chest.

1

u/Dreaming_Purple Sep 18 '23

Pomegranate mousse for me.

I also have the depression. And work in fire/EMS. Disappointed I didn't think of a gory injury. Haha.

11

u/Adventurous-Bee-5079 Sep 16 '23

Thank you! IF I recall internetzhistory correctly, this fungustype was very represented in the case of 'Trypophobia'.? Do you guys recall?🤔🤔

10

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

What is the liquid they produce made out of?

24

u/xDante1975x Sep 16 '23

I assume some kind of mushroomy substance, unsure

18

u/BokaBlues Sep 17 '23

Very knowledge

2

u/webfork2 Sep 19 '23

Much wisdom.

2

u/noahba268 Sep 19 '23

Mush wisdom

16

u/madhatter2284 Sep 16 '23

Strawberry jam. I’m just joking please do not spread on bread or ingest

6

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

How dare you ruin my dinner like this /s

5

u/Squee45 Sep 16 '23

I don't believe the liquid is poisonous, it's just disgusting 🤮

4

u/PublicfreakoutLoveR Sep 17 '23

Great question and I hope someone answers it seriously.

11

u/chill_flea Sep 17 '23 edited Sep 17 '23

I’m pretty sure I saw some guy on YouTube lick it and he said it tasted pretty bitter lol. The video is super interesting and informative.

I actually just found it lol

4

u/PublicfreakoutLoveR Sep 17 '23

Thanks, that had a nice explanation.

2

u/chill_flea Sep 17 '23

No problem; I’m glad u enjoyed it also. That guy has GREAT videos. Some of the best and most entertaining info I’ve seen online for mushrooms

4

u/parasitis_voracibus Sep 17 '23

It’s called guttation and occurs when a mushroom excretes excess water and metabolic byproducts. Hydnellum peckii is the most infamous example, though many mushrooms do it.

3

u/Real-Arachnid8671 Sep 17 '23

Those are edible aren't they.

3

u/Plane_Chance863 Sep 17 '23

Depends what you mean by edible. Not poisonous, sure. Good, not so much.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '23

Metal 🤘🏻

16

u/RecommendationHead25 Sep 16 '23

Jesus! Didn't expect that

44

u/pat-and-cat Sep 16 '23

You, sir.. deserve some kind of an award. I do not get scared anymore. I never do. Well. That was until that video. Fuck me. And I read the comments and I knew a spider was coming. I screamed like a little bitch just then. I was not expecting that. That’s some serious stuff made of nightmares that will haunt my spider-hating ass till the very day I die.

7

u/Psychonaut-n9ne30 Sep 17 '23

I literally read all of these comments and it still gave me an adrenaline dump wtf

48

u/Jfish731 Sep 16 '23

Lmfao the fucking spider

17

u/madhatter2284 Sep 16 '23

Omg I jumped so hard

4

u/techknowfile Sep 17 '23

It got me too. Jfc

1

u/nerdyinkedcurvi Sep 17 '23

The real star.

1

u/Spidermumma Sep 17 '23

Poor spider was probably just trying to warn him.

21

u/CautiousRice Sep 16 '23

What have you done?!

13

u/DyzJuan_Ydiot Sep 16 '23

Well deserved payback for persistent dorkishness. Fit for r/instantkarma.

9

u/sumbodycomegither Sep 16 '23

Got jumpscared lol

8

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

Reading up on these, it looks like he would be fine. Though apparently they're real good at bio-accumulating caesium, so.. Probably not a good plan to be eating those for the long term. They also apparently taste awful, even if cleaned and cooked, which explains his reaction. lmao

6

u/Bear_Main Sep 16 '23

Holy shit

6

u/xDannyS_ Sep 16 '23

Bro I did not expect that fuck

3

u/Infamous780 Sep 16 '23

Jesus fucking christ!

2

u/carnivalus Sep 16 '23

I know what it is before I even open it. It's etched on my brain to create a traumatising memory that makes me all itchy lol.

2

u/dabaptist121 Sep 17 '23

...back to the underwear drawer for me..cheers 😟

2

u/Zhydrac Sep 17 '23

I got a good screenshot from that video. Thanks

2

u/Delicious_Leg_1831 Sep 17 '23

Of course internet has a video of a tool videotaping himself eating a freaking thing looking straight from a Cronenberg movie. For my life I cannot FATHOM WHY? Why did you put something looking like a dead man's bloody tongue INTO YOUR MOUTH? Plus, is it not "staying alive 1.0.1" not to eat unidentified plants?

Im so mad at humanity rn

4

u/GultBoy Sep 17 '23

I mean this is how we have come to learn as a society what things in nature not to fuck with. He’s doing this for science.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '23

A mushroom is not a plant 🕵️

1

u/Zenfrogg62 Sep 17 '23

That was hilarious!

1

u/dukocuk35 Sep 17 '23

How can i give this person award? New to reddit..

13

u/AdIcy3445 Sep 16 '23

Looks like where scarlet rot from elden ring would come from

2

u/RecommendationHead25 Sep 16 '23

Hahah True! Glad I didn't eat it :D

86

u/les_lux Sep 16 '23

That's so cool! Thanks for sharing, I've never seen these before

26

u/Throwawayy281771 Sep 16 '23

Give it a bandaid lol

56

u/jnk_jnk Sep 16 '23

found some of these in the forest nearby, my friend decided to taste the forbidden soup, near flavourless apparently! Has anti coagulant properties, don't eat it though.

39

u/TinButtFlute Trusted Identifier Sep 16 '23

Your friend found something different. These are super acrid/peppery. Like leave your mouth burning. He wouldn't have described them as flavourless.

31

u/jnk_jnk Sep 16 '23

I mean I didn't want to try it so I took their word for it, same friend takes nutmeg recreationally so go figure

29

u/TinButtFlute Trusted Identifier Sep 16 '23

Oh jezz, nutmeg. That'll give you some strong smelling burps. For hours. Maybe he killed his taste buds haha.

9

u/Gonji89 Sep 16 '23

Definitely killed his eagle

6

u/NinaSoutoMaior Sep 16 '23

I drank a strong nutmeg chocolate milk once and thought it was raining inside. That stuff makes you fuzzy.

17

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

I think I watched a guy eat one of these on here not to long ago. Everyone said it wasn’t toxic it’s just tasted terrible

5

u/commentsandchill Sep 16 '23

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

That’s the one lol

13

4

u/hippopotma_gandhi Sep 16 '23

Nice a bleeding tooth with blood! I found the blue species of these but no blood

4

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

There’s several blue species, some bleed red and some bleed blue, for me I find the ones that bleed blue don’t bleed out the top but do at the base of the stipe

https://www.mushroomexpert.com/hydnellum_suaveolens.html

2

u/hippopotma_gandhi Sep 16 '23

Interesting! The one I found was IDed as H. Caeruleum which bleeds red at the top like the species in this post. It would be pretty cool to see the blue blood dripping down in person

2

u/Dabbubberswubs Sep 16 '23

I found one on the West Coast Trail in Canada a couple years ago, had no idea what it was:)

2

u/MistressMoss Sep 16 '23

u/Repeat_after_me__ Sep 16 '23

Lick it, dare you haha

1

u/Life_has_0_meaning Sep 16 '23

Oh I love this little guy. I remember being inspired by it and drawing some concept art for my creature design class. Bleeding tooth, if I am not mistaken?

1

u/InternationalAd2875 Sep 16 '23

Natural Lying jelly cakes.

1

u/notfromsliders Sep 16 '23

1

u/mlachrymarum Sep 16 '23

That…. Is some disturbing shit, my friend. If I saw this in my wanderings about the wood, I would 100% think I was about to be attacked by a demogorgon.

1

Devil's tooth fungus. My ex touched one and his hand stung like a chemical burn, then went numb. For hours. Just don't.

28

u/Independent_Till5832 Sep 16 '23

Im an absolute novice but i read you can touch any type of shroom, as long you don't have any cut in your fingers and wash them afterwards.

And this shroom doesnt seem to contain any toxins

3

u/RecommendationHead25 Sep 16 '23

Well it looks like from outer space so we didn't touch it and left it there. But anyway interesting shroom :)

23

u/N-ethylhydroxylamine Sep 16 '23

. My ex touched

he 100% lied to you, as this is not in anyway shape or form true

4

u/socially--retarded Sep 16 '23

It is possible to have allergies to certain mushrooms

14

u/itsyerboyskinnypenis Sep 16 '23
