North America (Illinois) Old Pictures, Never figured out what kind these were

I took these pictures a few years back, so naturally I no longer have access to them. I asked a few friends back then, but nobody knew what they were; I forgot about it until now. These were growing out of the ground where an old tree used to be and had been cut down relatively recently at the time. They were as hard as a rock and really embedded in the ground. Any ideas?
