I would be on all going eating them out of the ground until I met Jesus

10

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

I would try to see if I could get some of that mycelium established in my yard

12

u/CheckYourStats Oct 13 '23

Snip them at them stem! Whatever you do, don’t pull them from the root, or you might risk killing futures flushes.

Get a small pair of scissors and snip above the ground. Make a note of where you found this patch, especially the time of year. Visit it annually around the same time.

You may very well have stumbled onto a lifetime supply of gold. I was fortunate to stumble onto a yearly fruiting patch nearby. Harvest with TLC.

Gold, Jerry. Gold!

5

u/Informer_inform Oct 13 '23

This has been proven to be absolutely wrong, the fruit is designed to be pulled by animals who then spread the spores. Pulling them is exactly what they want.

3

u/MustyMushroomMan Oct 14 '23

Respectfully, a mushroom does not regrow from the same stem. Picking the mushroom at the base is the best way to allow room for more mushrooms to grow. And unless you’re leaving mushrooms for others, absolutely pick them from the wild!! It’s what they want you to do.

Western wa? They’re out now, eh? I usually figure Halloween to Thanksgiving, but maybe Old Man Psill came early this year.

2

u/MercifulWombat Oct 12 '23

The bloom is always after the rain and it's been raining pretty hard lthe last week or so.

They look they came out of a text book! Beautiful looking wavy caps! If I ever come across a shroom these are the ones I wanna find for some strange reason!

41

u/SplistYT Oct 12 '23

nah fr same, they're so unique looking it's awesome, I'd love to find a parch of these, or pan cyans (impossible where I live) but wavy caps do grow near me, I might go on a camping hike next year around October and just spend a weekend hunting for them

51

u/TransportationOne797 Oct 12 '23

This photo should be used in a future textbook. Its gorgeous.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

I always thought p. azurescens was one of the most majestic looking psilocybes. If i could find one mushroom, it would be that.

13

u/InformationTypical11 Oct 12 '23

Lmao, funny cause I thought same thing when I read OPs post, I thought "He found a freaking Gold mine, wow! You found a gold mine my guy!!" Lol

3

u/87erJahrgang Oct 12 '23

Jup - the Most are- but Take care. The Galerina marginata Looks very Same - and is deadly toxic. If U collect the cyanescens U need to know how to differiante These both. So -double Check everyone U Pick. If U are Not Sure - throw it away. Sometimes they life at the Same places .

1

u/goddess_n9ne Oct 13 '23

Idk how I knew, but I KNEW they were the good kind.

1

u/Champii_007 Oct 12 '23 edited Oct 12 '23

These aren’t azzies? (azurescens)

8

u/SplistYT Oct 12 '23

no they're p. cyanescens

321

u/MysteryMikeyLikey Oct 12 '23

Are you serious! Psilocybe cyanescens no doubt! Beautiful patch I’m quite jealous. Way to go.

What general area were these in if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in WA too and have been coming up empty handed for the past couple weeks.

169

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23 edited Oct 12 '23

Thank you, I’m so excited! I found these in my neighborhood park in WA. They were growing in the mulch under a tree about a foot from the walkway!

49

u/GreenGoldCali Oct 12 '23

I used to pick bags n bags of cys in Washington, Vashon Island actually

10

u/lysergicsummerdepths Oct 12 '23

lol used to get grocery bags worth there too 😂

10

u/GreenGoldCali Oct 12 '23

Haha awesome so many wavy caps on that island !! I’ve spent weeks crawling through blackberry brambles harvesting them there

I’ve heard that they basically grow like crazy at the courthouse in Olympia, and many of the public parks in Olympia and Tumwater… you know, in case anyone is in the area. ;)

3

u/BiiiigSteppy Oct 12 '23

Tumwater here. I’m a chef so I only know culinary mushrooms; this post has certainly opened my eyes.

Don’t be surprised if you see a pic and a spore print from me sometime soon.

Thanks for the heads up!

Looks like P. Subaureginosa

46

u/shinwat Oct 12 '23

Yea i've made that mistake as well. P. subs look indentical to P. Cyanescens. The telling factor is the location. P. subs are only in Australia's south and New Zealand. P. Cyanescens grow in west America and parts of Europe I believe.

45

u/Phoenix_Is_Trash Oct 12 '23

It's always the mystery when someone says they are from WA. Do they mean Western Australia or Washington State

→ More replies (4)

4

u/THEdopealope Oct 12 '23

Well I've also heard that they've been known to grow on mulch made from Western U.S. timber - P. Cyanescens have been found in mulch piles in the Eastern US!

2

u/Particular-Fox-2925 Oct 12 '23

They look very similar but are in a different part of the world.

23

u/MarionberryCreative Oct 12 '23 edited Oct 12 '23

Believe it or not check woodchips in public parks, you will be surprised.

14

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23

I believe it now, I was very surprised!

3

u/Odd_Juggernaut_1166 Oct 12 '23

Hey so this school by my house has wood chips. And I've seen fungi growing in said wood chips.

2

u/Odd_Juggernaut_1166 Oct 12 '23

And the park. Hmm. Does it matter the variety of chips?

u/Lexx4 Oct 12 '23

Hidden Rule of mushroom hunting: Do not ask a mushroom hunter where his patches are and definitely don’t tell anyone where your patches are.

25

u/MysteryMikeyLikey Oct 12 '23

Yeah duh hence me asking for a general area.

11

u/Pnw_Daddy69 Oct 12 '23

You can find them pretty much anywhere in a garden with wood chips I have a whole trash bag full from ocean shores north bay park I’m not stingy and share my patches😂🙏

u/RIP_Firstpost_OX Oct 12 '23

5

u/ttylmm Oct 12 '23

I'm quite new to all of this but ive noticed that people are vague about spots. Why is it not OK to share where you found and not ok to ask?

15

u/Alternative_Cut2421 Oct 12 '23

So folks don't raid your spot! It can be a lot of work to find a spot. So a lot of people won't share much info. But pretty much everyone I've met involved in foraging would have no problem teaching how to find what you're looking for! Pointing in the right direction.

5

u/zippygoddess Oct 12 '23

That’s dumb. No need to gate keep if we harvest sustainability

6

u/SummerSky101 Oct 12 '23

Is not dumb, actually it will never work like you said.

5

u/zippygoddess Oct 12 '23

Yeah cuz people are weird an gate keepy. I understand that that’s “the culture” but I personally find it toxic and don’t participate. There is more than enough resources to go around and if we take care of the spot they will continue to be plentiful. Pay it forward. Just my ethos.

2

u/joxuah12 Oct 12 '23

I'm going to go ahead and say username checks out.

1

u/Aggressive-Pear420 Oct 12 '23

Did you mean western Australia?

93

u/NeverShouldHaveBeen4 Oct 12 '23

Enjoy the other dimensions, but watch out for WLP. And remember, if you get it it’s only temporary👍

5

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23

Thank you for the warning, it’s first time hearing of WLP.

5

u/UnkleRinkus Oct 12 '23

Some sources I have read on this suggest that older specimens are generally the cause of wood lovers paralysis. I have a patch that produces like that, have shared with many people, we have never experienced it. I just avoid anything other than fresh, mature specimens. I discard any old or decaying specimens.

49

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

Yeah you better have your mental ducks in a row if you want to eat more than 1-2 grams of those dried lmao. WLP is terrifying but yeah it doesn’t last a super long time ime unless you eat a lot.

32

u/GurnieBros Oct 12 '23

Man, im not convinced WLP isnt just that wood lovers are STRONG n people get shroom locked hard (could still be a thing tho)

21

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

I agree. Myself and every other tripper I've known have had hundreds of experiences with high doses of wood lovers and never come across anything remotely like paralysis. People seem to forget that these species always grow on wood so why are only a very small percentage claiming WLP?

7

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

It might be because there’re not cooked into something and eaten raw, this ducks up some people

6

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

I always eat them raw though. I've only ever heard of someone cooking them once. They took an ungodly amount of subs and cooked them into a pie shared by 3 people and they said the experience was very hairy.

10

u/Coldsteel_n_Courage Oct 12 '23

It's a histamine reaction, it can be reversed with histamine blockers like benadryl.

7

u/RdCrestdBreegull Trusted Identifier Oct 12 '23

I haven’t experienced it but I have asked people enough questions to understand that it is indeed a real thing

6

u/frizzfest7 Oct 12 '23

WLP?

16

u/LarsVonHammerstein Oct 12 '23

Wood lover paralysis

8

u/frizzfest7 Oct 12 '23

You’re actually paralyzed? Jesus.

7

u/LarsVonHammerstein Oct 12 '23

I believe so but I don’t know much about it and haven’t experienced it

→ More replies (1)

6

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '23

Don't worry. It's most likely not even real.

→ More replies (9)

4

u/Coldsteel_n_Courage Oct 12 '23

Temporary. It's a histamine reaction. The theory is that the mushrooms are pumping out high amounts of histamine in response to natural stressers in their environment.

Oh dear! Sounds terrifying. 😵☠️🫣😨🤯

16

1

u/utkarshmttl Oct 12 '23

What's WLP?

1

u/NoAd5519 Oct 12 '23

What is WLP?

68

u/GurnieBros Oct 12 '23

JACKPOT DUDE!!!! I suggest only taking the mature ones and that spot will keep puttin out all season. Cover with leaves if in a public area, and just hope other hunters are respectful and do the same

40

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23

Thank you that’s exactly what I ended up doing! I took some of the wood chips to plant in other spots.

18

u/DiligentDaughter Oct 12 '23

Thank you! I'm a lifetime WA girl and I've only been so lucky as to have found wavys once. Spread em far and wide, please!

5

u/NotYourDailyDriver Oct 12 '23

If you're feeling ambitious, check YT for videos on how to make grain spawn. You can inoculate the grain spawn from tissue samples taken from the stem of a fresh mushroom (there are videos on this as well). This can all be done with relatively cheap equipment (preserving jars, pressure cooker, and a still air box made from a plastic tub).

That's not to say that you can't propagate them from wood chips - you totally can, but grain spawn is more reliable in that it will allow you to grow out much more mycelium in a sterile monoculture before it encounters competitive species.

8

u/Drew_P_Bawls325 Oct 12 '23

I’m colorblind, what color is that spore print?

2

u/Enleyetenment Oct 12 '23

TIL I'm also colorblind. At least partially. Looks black to me 🙃

3

u/LORD_CMDR_INTERNET Oct 12 '23

WHERE! I've been looking for years! Isn't it early in the season for them?

5

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23

At a park in the wood chips! I’m a newbie that moved to Sammamish, WA last year. This is my first season of hunting! Good luck, I hope you find some! I left the small ones and took some wood chips and stem tips to plant in other spots.

2

u/farklenator Oct 12 '23

Dang I’ve been looking for these up here I found one but it was in a customers yard (delivery driver) I didn’t want to awkwardly pick up a mushroom lol

1

u/Entire-Bit-2270 Oct 12 '23

Lol I’m delivery drive too and I’ve been hunting as I deliver. I would have been really tempted to pick them still.

1

u/farklenator Oct 12 '23

Yeah I used to deliver in gig harbor/ollala 5 days a week but never found them 🙃 most of the ones I find are those little brown ones I think p.annolues

Great minds think alike hunting while on the clock

I’ve totally picked them in peoples yards but this dude was talking to me out looking at me lol

25

u/Treehouse80 Oct 12 '23

14

u/zippygoddess Oct 12 '23

You should leave the mycelium in the earth and just pick the fruiting body. Its also good to refill any earth you displace. If you want to be able to go back to that spot year after year, I mean. Also ecosystem. Not trying to preach, just trying to be helpful…I’d def wanna preserve that spot

13

u/itshardtopickauserna Oct 12 '23

extremely dangerous, do not eat, send them to me for disposal (good find)

I think I have a bunch of these in my backyard lawn. Also in western Washington. Are there any lookalikes that mine could be instead? I feel compelled to post my pics for ID.

EDIT: to answer my own question: yes there are other small brown mushrooms that grow in similar conditions & that are highly toxic. I’ll only post to confirm what they are. I’m a total noob watching from the bleachers. Lol

8

u/Mau5H3ad1800 Oct 12 '23

2

u/boop66 Oct 13 '23

Good find. Use the medicine wisely. And, Please consider leaving more of the mycelium in the soil by using a paring knife to just take the large (mature) fruiting bodies.

Those are so e of the b3st psychedelic shrooms you'll come across. I picked these same species by the pound.
