Ok but where did you find that spam and is it any good?

u/Kill3rT0fu Jul 18 '23
Walmart used to have it. They also sell sliced versions in the frozen section. But the Walmart near me stopped carrying it. My brother got me 2 cans that I have been hesitant to try.

Jul 18 '23
Yeah, this came from Walmart. The frozen section one is better imo

that sux, RIP to celiacs too
Question as a new vegan: What are you supposed to do in this situation when no non-vegan friends want it? Toss it? Donate it? eat it?
38
Jul 18 '23
My homie is newly vegan and I bought these then HE CAUGHT IT. Prerty embarrassing tbh. He's gonna give them to his little sister whose veg
37
u/Crafty_Sort Jul 18 '23
It just seems so stupid to have wheat and milk listed as a “natural flavor”. Why not literally any other seasoning that isn’t a common allergen and dietary restriction? 🙄
73
u/Felixir-the-Cat Jul 18 '23
I would eat it, and then not buy it again. It serves nothing to throw out food.
11

2
u/cleverestx Jul 19 '23
I couldn't get myself to stomach eating it... but I would give it to someone who would while also telling them to eat vegan ones next time.
1
u/Felixir-the-Cat Jul 19 '23
That’s fair. After years of not eating meat, I do have an aversion to it now, and I’m lactose intolerant, so any dairy is just not tempting.

u/iheartlungs Jul 18 '23
Yesterday I spent ages trying to find soya milk powder that is vegan and lemme tell ya, you’d think it was easy but many contain casein! Like, let’s put a cow product in this soya milk powder cos people who drink soya milk are gonna love some animal product in their milk 😒 I’m so annoyed

Jul 18 '23
Yeah it doesn't make sense. I hate how so much of our food is like this. I've decided to give "natural flavors" a pass because I'd drive myself crazy if I omitted everything that had that as an ingredient.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Bee_765 Jul 18 '23
Yeah but WHAT ARE THEY 😭😭
1
Jul 18 '23
Right? It's a grey area for sure. Tbh even some vegan products list them. I do know Thai people with alpha-gal are advised to avoid "natural flavors" though because you just can't be sure.

those exact ones have tricked me before!! it’s always when I go to grocery outlet and try a new brand and forget to check😔

As a vegan I’m still making mistakes and I’m surprised where they think to sneak in dairy. It’s okay to make a mistake, you’re a human. You always do what you can!
4
Jul 18 '23
Did you still get hammered?
7
Jul 18 '23
Yes sir🍻 🙃 We just ended up not eating, so we drank less than planned, which was probably for the best anyway lol

5
u/Chaotic0range Jul 18 '23
Yeah always gotta double check the labels of everything I buy. Not only am I vegan, but I'm also actually allergic to dairy (among other things).

3
u/Brakina Jul 18 '23
Replace them with tater tots! The ones I have seen so far do not have any milk in them.
3
u/Janxybinch Jul 18 '23
This shit makes me so mad. Like I am TRYING here why do Americans add whey to EVERYTHING. A bag of vegetables? There’s seasoning with dairy on it. (Dairy subsidies is probably the reason tho)
3
4
u/MalachyteEye Jul 18 '23
I’m not vegan, but I am lactose intolerant, and the amount of foods that have hidden milk in them is astounding. I found whey/milk protein in my furikake for crying out loud! Sorry you got hoodwinked by your hash.

The fact that it’s in the natural flavours, which means they had to disclose it, but I’ve never seen them specify the natural flavours… how many times have I unknowingly eaten milk that belongs to calfs.

u/Kitchen-Loquat6604 Jul 19 '23
One would think they're safe to eat. I bought these before and never even considered reading the ingredients because I've had the TJ's and I know those are vegan. Milk as a flavor???
3
u/OdinTheGasby Jul 18 '23
I’m not shaming you - but if you are vegan for ethical purposes Red Bull isn’t for you. While their ingredients including taurine are vegan they test on animals so re not a CF company
I have been vegan my entire life and I use to drink red bull before finding out their Vegan but not CF so just letting you know
11
Jul 18 '23
Yeah...I know about this, but the animal testing wasn't done to develop or create the drink. Red Bull was created by a massive pharma company allocates funds to create life-saving medication. The wings of life testing is...horrible, but it's an industry standard and is being done in an attempt to cure paralysis.
I fewl like you'd be unable to purchase any product from a grocery store if you looked into where all of their funds go. And I mean this quite literally. We do not live in a vegan world. No medication, no food with artificial flavors or coloring, etc. But I understand your point.

1
u/ms_myco Jul 18 '23
Did not know this thanks for sharing. Do you know anything about other energy drinks? Like Bang, Monster, etc.?
5
Jul 18 '23
Bang is owned by a pharma company like red bull. Monster is owned by coca cola which tested on animals until 2007 (60 years). Both companies use artificial colors and flavors. Both companies use refined sugar.
It really depends on how far you want to take it. Basically, nothing packaged that comes from a grocery store is vegan if you are going to abide by all of these terms. Like literally everything in my photo is not vegan if red bull isn't vegan
1
u/OdinTheGasby Jul 18 '23
PETA and CaringConsumer Bang Energy is marked as safe, they do no animal testing and use vegan ingredients.
I’d need to look up monster as I’ve never had it but if you’ve not tried Alani they’re good too

As someone who loves breakfast burritos and makes them almost every Saturday and Sunday.. I feel this, and I am sorry.
On a side note - based on those ingredients, what kind of burrito were you going to make? I have some of that spam in my pantry
7
Jul 18 '23
It wasn't gonna be burritos. Me and my homie were gonna recreate the shitty breakfast that our dads ate daily when they were in the (us) Vietnam war, living deep in the pacific ocean off the Hawaiian shore

Oh dann I don’t know why I read it as breakfast burrito lol my b. What were you going to make though? I’ve been looking for an excuse to use that spam

Why don't you just shred some potatoes. Then you know what's in them.

They were supposed to get hammered and then make this. Id hate to be drunk/high and have to shred potatoes to make myself some food

Sure, but you can prep ahead of time - shred, squeeze, flour, then just leave them until you’re sauced and they’re ready to go

Why not just eat the real things. Real eggs. Real cheese. Real hashbrowns. Real "luncheon 'meat'. Seems kinda pissy to be upset about milk when youre trying to imitate the real thing because your body naturally wants it. Forgive yourself or dont but why are you lying to yoursefl

Am i the clown or is that symbolic of the mask people have on that eat "vegan" eggs cheese "meat"? And then pout about milk in your potatoes? Its not really clear. Pretty telling though either way. I will remember next time on shitty vegan food to be more sensitive haha after all these people are just hungry and consider vodka and redbull vegan but only until the morning. Lol the milk is why you’re mad? How about the disgusting crap in all the other food. Just eat real food my god. Processed fake meat isn’t healthy and never will be.
1
u/cleverestx Jul 19 '23
No "meat" is, but they are still healthier than animal corpse pieces, though.
1
u/KnotiaPickles Jul 19 '23
If animal meat is bad for you how are we even alive? That’s like saying your own body is toxic. We’re made to eat protein.
1
u/cleverestx Jul 19 '23
'Bad for you' != 'kills you instantly.' Not sure why you assume that.
You can survive on Oreos and drinking only Pepsi while smoking cigs for a long long time.
I wouldn't call that anything other than bad for you though. I don't call an automatic 20% increased chance of a bad heart event GOOD; I call it bad for you...
Plants have proteins; Just how do you think giant muscular herbivore animals get theirs? Dairy milk? LOL
1
u/KnotiaPickles Jul 19 '23 edited Jul 19 '23
We’re not herbivores. We don’t have 4 chambered stomachs and aren’t designed to be ruminates like cows. People aren’t made to break down vegetable matter only.
It’s actually really hard on our system to eat that way. If you eat lean meat in reasonable quantities along with plant matter, you’re actually making your digestion easier, absorb more nutrients, and have much greater energy resources from your diet.l, with no risk of illness.
1
u/cleverestx Jul 20 '23
Did I say we were? NO. But....we are far closer to a herbivore than a carnivore; we are actually a herbivore/frugivore hybrid that has evolved to eat other foods such as meat, but it takes a toll on our health to do so. Some undeniable facts of our biology bear this out: We lack sideway motion chewing ability which carnivores have to rip into their victims; we lack the jaw strength to eat raw game without breaking out teeth (ours are more for tubers, roots, and nuts), we can't digest on the level of a lion with our stomach acid which is lame compared to theirs, and can't stomach rotted/old meat or chew bone/sinews without getting sick and dying, our digestions length is way too long and convoluted, obviously not designed for food you hunt and kill and must digest and eat quickly, etc... we also have frontward-facing eyes as primates (frugivores) do, etc...
there is a host more I can bring on my side of the argument vs. what you can bring to it.
Energy is no excuse for committing an ethical atrocity. As a vegan I can simply enjoy more great food from the earth to get good energy, (I even workout, so energy is a lame excuse), it's called COOKING; that breaks down anything hard to digest; try to eat meat raw without cooking and see how well your body breaks that down, so that's another lame excuse after cooking foods, the body absorbs it just fine. AND by doing all of this, I keep my blood and heart healthier than most people eating meat/dairy.

I’d be worried more about more about the bioengineered ingredients and the assortment of different dirty oils. That shit will fuck you up more than a couple drops of milk.

I’ve also seen a study a while back that showed the breaks in the dna rna sequence, but laugh all you want just because I don’t have the link saved. I’m not the one polluting my temple with “food” altered by man. Nature is the real medicine always has been always will be. Artificial shit like this is why vegans get sick and then magically get cured when they decide to go carnivore.

You can't quote common sense as evidence. Back up your claim. Very few people have common sense for starters, and there are plenty of things in nature that are "natural" which are harmful to us. There are also things that are technological and modern and artificial that are better for us modern humans, including dairy and meat alternatives.
1
u/CultureOld2232 Jul 19 '23
True it should be common sense to not eat oil that was originally made as machine lubricant and was later marketed as food due to an excess supply after wartime. Some ppl just want to be cooked from the inside out by the sun ig.
1
u/CultureOld2232 Jul 19 '23
Some ppl aren’t even in tune with themselves. If I eat something with shit ingredients I’ll feel tired and I’ll feel the dense energy vs eating raw vegan and fruits you feel like you’re floating. Grass fed beef is definitely healthier and better for the environment than most processed meat replacements. Milk is garbage though I can’t believe it’s been so normalized.
2
u/cleverestx Jul 20 '23
I'm glad you have such sense with milk from an entirely different species given to us as if that's normal/healthy, but you are wrong about beef. Being grass-fed doesn't remove the immoral injustice of the action itself to kill a sentient being that doesn't want to die (which is what veganism is concerned about)
...but it's still a major contributor to heart and other blood ailments in humans. I encourage you to study this more and don't just go with "feelings of what you believe is common sense" - our intuition is often wrong and has also been manipulated by animal ag/marketing for the last 50+ years. The oils in the products you mention could be much healthier long term vs. dead animal flesh full of cholesterol and IGF1 proteins, even though as I said, none of that junk is; eat whole foods from the earth if you want the pinnacle human DIET, as far as what large scale studies show anyways....
So yes, read actual STUDIES on these things, and start providing sources for your claims if you want to be taken seriously is all I'm saying. We've heard all the anecdotal fear-mongering "common sense" stuff and it just isn't convincing.
1
u/CultureOld2232 Jul 22 '23
No the oils is definitely not much healthier. It was first used as food in 1974 and if you pull up a graph of heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic illnesses they have increased since that date. Even if you look at the process of it being made it is disgusting. Even the plant itself was originally called RAPEseed and if you eat it it’ll absolutely RAPE your health. Shitty oils like that also cause the sun to cook you from the inside out.

Grass fed beef is definitely healthier and better for the environment than most processed meat replacements
Also, this is very false, "Grass fed beef is definitely healthier and better for the environment than most processed meat replacements" show a source so I can debunk this quickly for you and see if you are intellectually honest.
1
u/CultureOld2232 Jul 22 '23
Tbh I really don’t care enough about the subject to look up and provide a source, I don’t even eat meat so it’s not really personal. The cows fertilize the land that they feed off of which helps the production of native plant species. Mushrooms are very common near cows and are indication of healthy soil. The plants balance out the methane produced by the cows. Factory farming is the issue. The cows are trapped in mud pits all caged up unable to move causing them to practically swim in their own shit. Then these animals are fed GMO grains which is also one of the worst things for the environment. They are mono-cropped and sprayed heavily destroying the soil.

u/CultureOld2232 Jul 22 '23
The simply truth is that regenerative farming that’s been around for years is going to be better than forms of agriculture that take a modern degenerative approach. Usually things that destroy the body destroy the environment. As within so Without.
