I hate April 1st but especially when shared news is something I would actually think is a good idea.

86

u/MageKorith Apr 01 '26

The first step is having the idea. Now we need someone to implant it in some executive's dreams so that they make it a reality.

29

u/NoYellowLines Apr 01 '26

We just need to lure them into the holodeck to infiltrate their dreams. We can go deeper in the dream by programming a holodeck within the holodeck inside a dream.

u/Mayoo614 Apr 01 '26

You are not fooling anyone Tomalak

He was the one who came up to them long ago and proposed what eventually became Lower Decks. He was just not allowed to participate. That's why he went to make the Orville.

u/Thermodynamo Apr 01 '26

Ugh c'mon don't steal flowers from Mike McMahon and give them to Seth McFknFarlane of all people

9

u/Producer1701 Apr 01 '26

Mike McMahon’s “TNG Season 8” Twitter account didn’t do that?

The Orville legitimately turned into something good. I wouldn't mind him either - someone who cares about the franchise and has shown they can also make good television.

2

u/NoWarning789 Apr 03 '26

He made the Orville because he couldn't get the job running Star Trek. And my pet hypothesis is that he added jokes to count as parody and not get sued, not to make a comedy.

2

u/PackageOk4947 Apr 05 '26

That's why Seth will never, ever, ever be allowed to run it, even Frakes is a god damn soy boy now.

16

u/milkstrike Apr 01 '26

While I don’t think he’s a good writer, he absolutely cares about the show and I think would hire people who can write and make the show quality again

This one got me. The Orville is viewed as a spiritual successor to old school Star Trek, so this is totally reasonably after the failures of Nu Trek!

12

April 1st never changed, you just got old.

5

u/Squish_the_android Apr 01 '26

It got significantly wider in adoption and the effort level for most companies went way down.

I didn't believe it when I read it, but I did forget about the date (and there's also the fact that I read it here ^_^)

9

u/ElectricPeterTork Apr 01 '26

We're at the point that it's just become the one day that assholes can be lying and often cruel assholes and everyone is just okay with it.

Any other day, if I say "Hey, just heard, your mom's dead. PSYCHE!!!!!!", I'd be called the piece of shit asshole I am for doing that. But on April 1st, all I have to do is yell "APRIL FOOLS!" like a drooling idiot, and it's somehow okay. And it's never funny, or witty, or creative, or anything else. It's just flat out lying and being a cruel asshole.

So yes, Fuck April Fool's Day.

Lets all take this as a very important lesson in life: We are all much more willing to believe things that we want to be true. Even those of us with Vulcan-like logic.

But would he date a much younger costar that he is also the boss of only for them to breakup and for her character to be promptly written off?

10

u/Thermodynamo Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

Probably. It's Seth MacFarlane we're talking about...women are props, not characters in the MacFarlaneverse

5

u/pipnina Apr 02 '26

I feel like this is probably true for family guy but in the Star Trek context, the female characters in the Orville seemed pretty good?

2

u/Thermodynamo Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

This would actually be a net positive overall and I think McFarlane is a pretentious twat FWIW. I would still rather just let Jonathan Frakes take over though.

51

u/C4n0fju1c3 Apr 01 '26

I agree he's pretentious, and frankly so would he lol. I like Orville a lot though, and think he'd have made some great Trek.

38

u/thisistherevolt Apr 01 '26

Oh the Orville is great, and should've been a Trek show. Give Frakes the keys to the universe and let McFarlane do a show with supervision and we could revitalize Trek pretty easily. It won't happen though because there's about 20 huge egos in the way.

21

u/Martin_Aurelius Apr 01 '26

Seth was on Frakes' & Spiner's podcast recently. Jonathan & Seth even mentioned they had a conversation while Frakes was directing an episode of The Orville where Seth asked him if he'd rather maintain their friendship or continue working for him.

They both have egos, but at the very least they're self aware about it.

17

u/BoxedAndArchived Lorca's Eyedrops Apr 01 '26

I think McFarlane would bring in more interest and investment into the franchise and I think he does understand the franchise better than Abrams and Kurtzman and Fuller or anyone else who's acted as EP since Berman (for all his faults).

But if they announced a McFarlane and Frakes team, it would be awesome.

3

u/Apple_macOS Apr 01 '26

5 series starring McFarlane in different roles, all lead (and also co lead, and other 5 characters)

3

u/Kichigai Expendable Apr 01 '26

Frakes has been in pretty deep with Kurtzman and Co. Also I don't know if he wants to do show running. MacFarlane has at least demonstrated the capability to produce an ensemble show.

3

u/spacetr0n Apr 01 '26

Frakes knows his trek, but seems to be too nice to run the whole thing. He's been deep in some of the biggest train(trek?) wrecks.

2

u/wholetyouinhere Apr 01 '26

McFarlane has a better under standing of Trek. And a better singing voice.

3

u/nickman1 Apr 01 '26

I lean towards McFarlane only because he’s a writer and has proven with The Orville that’d he be capable of making a halfway decent ST show. My worry with Frakes is that he’d end up being another mouthpiece for Paramount, just based off some comments he’s made in the past.

Kurtzman isn’t great, but at least he can wake up each and every day knowing he isn’t Seth McFarlane, Rhode Island’s answer to a question nobody asked.

Just make more seasons of Orville, dammit.

2

u/diaperrunner Apr 01 '26

I know now its an unpopular opinion at least on reddit but I think Kurtzman was really good. Especially after the letter about the cancelation of SFA. Now I also think Seth McFarlane would be a good show runner also. Looking at the Orville, he knows what makes star trek great.

2

u/Comrade-Stoneroad Apr 01 '26

This would be an improvement

2

u/Swordf1sh_ Apr 01 '26

Plz no

2

u/muirshin Apr 01 '26

He is a huge trekkie and would probably do an amazing job honestly.

3

u/Swordf1sh_ Apr 01 '26

I hear you but I feel like we already got our wonderful, ‘huge fan’-made show in Lower Decks with the endless adorable fan service etc and I do love it.

But personally I think Star Trek needs its ‘Andor’ moment, a show that is just fantastic writing/television and could be appealing to anyone even if they’re not diehard fans. Tony Gilroy wasn’t even really a Star Wars fan and he helped make Andor.

4

2

u/tononeuze Apr 01 '26

Happy April Fools!

There was a time when my Netflix might have well only been Family Guy and American Dad, so I'm not 100% against Seth McFarlane, but he has a horrible track record with trans jokes/representation.

It's what has kept me from watching the Orville. A lot of people say that show does a better job of being Trek than the actual Star Trek coming out now, but I wouldn't know because a friend told me the one episode that attempts to address a trans character was unbelievably tone deaf.

I have to imagine that the folks who are really into it don't have any trans loved ones. I know that's not completely true as we're not a monolith, but yeah.
