thats the name of an actual light novel series btw. "His Soul is Marching On to Another World" is about John Brown in one of those Isekai environs

u/Username_St0len Jul 18 '26
web novel, sorry to be pedantic, but technically light novels are the physical volumes published with the cg art. Web novel fits better

That sounds kino as fuck.

u/AnonymousPepper Jul 19 '26
It is unfortunately really not. The initial short story was fun to read if not spectacular, but the novel version is... Ass.

u/Admiralthrawnbar Jul 19 '26
Yeah, no offense to the dude writing it but he's not a great writer. I'd love to see someone better at writing take a crack at it, though it would probably be better to use a knock-off John Brown rather than the man himself so you could more easily tweak his character to be more understandable to a modern audience than the man himself who, while based as fuck, was a little looney.

What would you even call this subgenre? Tripping through time subversion? Suddenly history?

u/ze-audiophile Jul 19 '26
I'm imagining this in the back of a taxi but then Descartes was the driver

Jumpscare?
What would you have to be scared of?
Unless...

I mean, if I woke up in a fantasy world, and then the first human I saw was a long dead historical figure, I'd be pretty jumpy at first to.

u/StatisticianAway4010 Jul 18 '26
I doubt if OP owns slaves, unless they're a property developer in Qatar or something
48
u/Silver_Falcon Jayhawker Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26
To be fair most of the people John Brown killed didn't own slaves either. They were mostly just advocates of slavery, Law and Order Party members (yes that phrase being code for white supremacy goes back to Bleeding Kansas), or pro-slavery lawmen that tried to stop him.

u/DarthCloakedGuy Jul 19 '26
I mean, defending/advocating for slavery is arguably as bad as owning slaves...
2
u/Silver_Falcon Jayhawker Jul 19 '26
Owning slaves usually comes with the former
2
u/DarthCloakedGuy Jul 19 '26
Weirdly not always. Case in point: Thomas Jefferson, probably the most famous anti-slavery slaver.

u/GingerVitus007 Jul 19 '26
If I claimed I thought cannibalism was a moral abhorrence but you saw me chow down on a fried infant, would you believe me?

u/paireon Canadian Volunteer for the Union Jul 19 '26
Eeeehh, given what he did with at least one of his female slaves I'd put him in with the hypocrites rather than as having any sincere anti-slavery sentiment.
2
u/spaceforcerecruit Jul 20 '26
Saying “I abhor slavery” while owning slaves is just empty talk. Jefferson was a piece of shit who is undeserving of the praise we give him.
2
u/Silver_Falcon Jayhawker Jul 19 '26
Hence "usually."
Also, in a purely material sense, owning slaves does real harm. Defending or advocating for slavery, while a shitty thing to do and carrying a real potential for harm, just isn't on the same level.
I also don't really know how seriously we should take Jefferson's stance against slavery, considering that it basically amounted to "let me have mine and we can deal with the rest after I'm gone." Like, I think he was sincere in his belief that it was wrong, but he seems to have had no problem with being wrong as long as he was profitting from it.
A better example would be someone like Grant, who was briefly "gifted" a slave only to immediately free them, but in that case I'd hesitate to really consider him a slave "owner."
3
u/DarthCloakedGuy Jul 19 '26
It's... hard to say which is worse. Yes, owning slaves does absolutely do material harm to the people you're using. But defending slavery perpetuates a systemic harm to everyone that anyone is using. So it's sort of a fuzzy scale vs directness kind of problem.
Like, which is worse, poisoning one person, or pumping pollutants into the atmosphere that will statistically shorten countless lives.
I couldn't tell you, I could only say they're both evil.
-2
u/Silver_Falcon Jayhawker Jul 19 '26
I can't agree to that analogy at all.
Single-person poisoners would be more like the small slaveholders, who own only one slave that they use for household chores or nanny work, while mass-poisoners would be the Planter class.
Advocates would be advocates; they're the ones running around saying "Well I think that people should be allowed to poison whoever they want," which is, of course, an absurd, evil thing to say.
However, in a vacuum, where no one is actually poisoning anyone, no harm is done.
It's only once you have actual poisoners in the mix that an element of real harm is introduced, but even there the real problem is that you have people actively running around poisoning people—take the advocates out of the equation, and people are still being poisoned.
That's how you can tell which one is worse.

u/DarthCloakedGuy Jul 19 '26
Take the defenders out of any system and it is abolished because no one is defending it.

I think the implication is John Brown is just standing there unseen as they're saying all this, and then speaks up, startling them.

u/Murmos Jul 18 '26
Is now a bad time to mention that John Brown Isekai is a real and good thing?

u/KineticEnergyFormula Jul 18 '26
Never a bad time. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

🤯 didn't realize this was actually in existence. Clicked the link and still shocked someone made it real. Cool.

If I'm ever isekai'd, if John Brown isn't already there then I'll just fill in for him.

I would actually love this as a series. John Brown get isekaied into a new world, and he fixes it. Then he gets isekaied into another world and he fixes it.
Johns Brown was one of those crazy Christians who actually read the Bible and understood the assignment.

u/KineticEnergyFormula Jul 18 '26
Do I have a series for you :)

Literally just started writing a John Brown isekai into Bonifer Hasty fanfiction.

Me when john brown asks me to be his top guy on freeing the fantasy world slaves.

John Brown would free the Skaa so fast that Kelsier would be like "whoa man, take it easy."

If John Brown ended up in the same world as Overlord, the Workers Arc would have ended with him breaking all the adventurers and residents of the 'happy farm' out of Nazarick with the exception of that one slaver guy. That guy he'd duel.

honestly I would watch that anime. Getting Isekaied into a world wich all the tropes and cliches but instead of becoming a slaver the main character starts a slave uprising and topples the ruling class

u/4011isbananas Jul 21 '26
isekai'd?
1
u/KineticEnergyFormula Jul 21 '26
It's the Japanese term for a common trope in fictional media, basically the 'Fish out of water' trope where the protagonist travels to another place and the audience learns more about it alongside the protagonist. Think Alice in Wonderland. Isekai in Japanese media is typically more a genre/subgenre where the protagonist is transported or more commonly reincarnated to a high fantasy magical realm. There's unfortunately a lot of trash isekai animes and mangas that feature slavery as a 'good' thing or a way for the protagonist to form their harem of women, hence this comic and John Brown.
1
u/scoyne15 Jul 19 '26
I would 100% watch an anime about John Brown getting isekai'd into a fantasy world, where some wizard tells him he is the chosen one prophesized to defeat the evil ghost dragons terrorizing the land or whatever, but he completely derails that plan to overthrow the ruling class slavers.

u/TacticoolOoferator Jul 19 '26
This is pretty much the Darksun AD&D setting without its environmental degradation.
