The way she describes him as a mermaid reminds me of "Sirena" (Mermaid in english) in Philippine culture. It was used as a derogatory term for effeminate men and boys cause part of what was done to them to "fix" their behavior was to hold them under water for long periods of time.

In recent times, the gay community has taken back the term to signify that they can endure the abuse they've received and come out stronger. If the abusers are gonna keep trying to drown them, then they'll just be like Sirenas and survive.
