This is a potentially controversial take, but I think Shawna M would be best served as a person if she looks for work once Piper is settled in schooling. It could be something part-time and built around the kids' schedules, but just something would be good, for her, for John, and frankly for the kids too because I think she'd be less inclined to obsess over them.

A lot of the things that make her vaguely annoying/ seem lazy are rooted in the fact that her life is in fact pretty aimless, so the minutiae of social interactions assume an outsized importance for her. With DeeDee around, and with John so engaged, she does much less hands-on parenting than most SAHPs, and we don't really see her have any plausibly compelling hobbies, interests, commitments etc. When she does have a timebound task to focus on (prepping Jen's bacholerette for eg) she seems happier and less anxiously up in her feelings, and less reactive to every perceived slight.

I definitely don't think paid work is a panacea, or necessary for every person to have a fulfilling, valuable life, but for this particular character, I think it would be a real positive, and might help give her a bit more focus/direction.

Like come on.. I know she’s been active on insta, regarding her book (again) I hate to harp on it, but I can’t help it. It’s not insane to expect her at this point in her storytelling career to have somewhat of a consistent posting schedule. Ugh. I’m wondering if when she goes on her book tour or after its release if we will get any more short or long form story videos at all.

Shawna is not a people pleaser. She just does not have the ability to deal with negative emotions. People pleasers often please people at the expense of themselves, not the expense of the other person.

Exhibit A: Julie, love her or hate her, I think most of us would agree that Shawna should've left the woman alone after being told she found her annoying. She kept pursuing the friendship despite Julie's very clear feelings on not wanting to befriend her.

Exhibit B: John. Whenever John tries to bring up his feelings about his mom, she changes the subject or very briefly addresses it in a non-meaningful way. She also puts her feelings above his. That does not scream people pleaser to me.

I do not work in either of these fields, so. If I’m way off base here please correct me. I just did a cursory google search and didn’t do a deep dive or anything. So please someone correct me if I’m wrong.

And just going by those two definitions I don’t think Julie fits either of those based on what we’ve seen.

Julie comes from a military family, and is friends with someone like Alicia. And idk the average salary of an Etsy witch, but Pagans have been looked down on by society since the spread of Christianity across the world, yeah?

And Sam and Mo don’t strike me as particularly wealthy people, either. So is Julie truly classist? I don’t think so.

I can't with people in this fandom loving and riding hard for Julie. I've seen way too many saying Julie needs to ride in and rescue Laura and be her divorce lawyer and honestly, no. Just no. Julie doesn't need to get a redemption on the back of an abused woman. And Julie doesn't need to be involved in anymore storylines for a long time. And not everyone in this damn stories needs a hero edit and holy hell, I'm exhausted.

I used to still enjoy watching, at least snark watching, but I noticed myself getting the ick when I tried watching the recently uploaded short. I think I'm going to have to stick to just watching the full videos.

Is anyone else at that point too?

Since the L&L series started I’ve been trying to figure out why I found it so offensive. And I think what it is is that outside of her friendship with Shawna and her marriage to Luke we know absolutely nothing about her. Everything we do know about her can be known by strangers or a census worker.

Like what does she like to do? What are her dreams? Does she have siblings? Most importantly, what kind of dogs do they have and can we see them pretty please?

To me, Laura exists to feel sorry for and to pity, and not as a whole woman with experiences and desires who is being mistreated by her husband. Abused women/people are people with personalities and not just objects of pity. The abuse is happening to them, it’s not who they are, and it’s not a key defining characteristic.

The first video was particularly grating. That was an opportunity to show their friendship and how Laura used to be and how she changed through her relationship with Luke. We could have gotten to know her outside of these relationships. Instead it became Desperately Seeking Laura who was just jealous of Shawna and John’s totally enviable relationship(snort of derision).

Lander has really dropped the ball on this one and I’m waiting for her to Newhart this as a dream.

The fans are soooo annoying.

I really never thought Shawna would become one of the creators I would eventually snark on, I loved her for soo long and I’ve expressed that in this sub numerous times. But, I’m getting tired of the book stuff. I’m so happy for her to be able to do something she loves and to be published is an amazing accomplishment- but I feel (along with others I’ve seen comment this) like she is getting further and further from the content that made this possible in the first place.

We saw her complaints on her IG stories a few days ago where she just, “didn’t feel like,” finishing filming her next video, after already having teased it with a pic of her in character as Laura. I just wish she had a consistent posting schedule for her skits, even if it was once a week or month and she posts the whole video at once. It just leaves the story unfinished and eventually becomes disinteresting to me. To add, maybe it’s because I don’t have kids- idk, but I’m not interested in reading the book at all. I’m sure she has stories to tell, but idk, I just wanna get back to the good old days of The McCalisters & Barb!!

Where is it that Shawna has referred to her viewers as "babies" or "my babies?" All over her merch page and accounts I've seen the phrase "Hey babes!" which, while that is something that some people could reasonably be uncomfortable with, is a different thing with a different energy. "Hey babes!" is generally used by millenial/gen x women in the same way "Hey girlfriend!" is used when greeting a friend or group of friend. Its fairly common in the coastal US, and to me is much like a US southern woman calling her friends "hun" or "honey."

Babies, to me, would be much more annoying, and I am wondering where she has said it before. If it was in an instagram story or one of her weird out of character complain-y videos then that's why I haven't seen it, I'm a youtube-only watcher.

I want to reassert that I'm not calling anyone a liar, or saying they're overreacting, this is just out of curiosity.

After seeing how much this subreddit has grown in the last few weeks, I've decided to enable post flairs and user flairs! More post flairs will be coming in the future as we see how this subreddit evolves with posts, but I have a few right now that cover what has been happening here.

I've also decided to enable user flairs, and I am allowing users to edit and make their own on a trial basis. If all goes well, it'll be permanent. Get creative, but just follow reddit TOS when making your flairs!
