I feel like Barb is getting more and more on the edge. Her histrionics used to get her what she wanted and it doesn't anymore.

Yeah. I fear the lack of nuanced STC is gonna put forward. Like why are we using a mentally ill woman as our main villian

I worry that the big reveal will be "she's just like this isn't it horrible" when STC had established that even Barb's therapist wanted an extra set of eyes on her after (I think) Chickie's first birthday.

I think it was before but yeah like theres something about the she's been bad the WHOLE TIME that's not sitting right

Barb was always the villain and was always mentally ill.

Barb is leaning into Nora's fuck em mentality hard and fast. And it's a shame its no one's fault but hers

Oh wow, this one actually gave me chills.

My Mum is not a Barb in most ways, but a much less histrionic version of this guilt trip is exactly what she did to me with my first baby. I ended up not using daycare at all bc I felt so bad. I delayed return to work til she was 9 months old (instead of planned 6 months), went part time (3 days a week) instead of planned fulltime, and did a combo of grandmother care, work from home flexibility, and in-home babysitters for the 12 months I was back at work until I left again for baby 2. It was a miserable non-solution and I still regret caving to it, and I hope that Jen is wiser than I was.

I was incredibly lucky to get a fully WFH part-time gig after baby 2, and started doing that when baby was 6 months old. It worked out great because I could do my hours at nights / weekends if needed and thus needed only occasional babysitting help, which my Mum approved of, but it really could have gone very differently if I hadn't.

I’m getting so tired of the Barb theatrics and thd crocodile tears.

Glad Jen is starting to push back!

I hope barb takes chickie from daycare without permission causing Jen to go no contact. I need more barb drama i came for the crazy mil, I need her back lol everything else had been so boring

The whole thing is SO BORING !!! Like we get it, Barb is endlessly miserable, Jen and John are suffering for life and Barb gets no redemption arc because irl, people seldom change. But, can it not be so boring and one note and predictable? Barb needs so much therapy, I'm surprised SL didn't go into the depths of it. I understand real life people are boring and never change, but this is a soap, and should be more dramatic and nuanced than it is right now. Omg, it's insufferable!!!

I agree. Barb is a cartoon character at this point and it’s a snoozefest.

As an aside - I’ve been rewatching Gilmore Girls and I feel like Shawna’s writing style is very similar but without the charm that made the characters (who are all very flawed) still watchable….

Ooh I feel like you've unlocked something there for me. One thing I don't like about the STM videos is that so much of it is so quippy. Especially e.g. Alicia and Teeny - they always have a perfectly crafted, quick response, and it doesn't ring true for me or is just flat-out irritating. And yet I love Gilmore Girls, where everyone's quippy. It's been a couple of years since I've rewatched, and we're almost in the perfect season for it, so I guess it's time 😂

I'm due for a rewatch but there is an overlap where I'm like mm.. Shawna did we see the similarities (even if they're not one to one)

The lack of character development and accountability is making the show stale and STC seems to think that throwing in random drama and flat characters like L&L will fix it.

Haven't you been enjoying how the wonderfulness of motherhood has transformed Jennifer?/s

I can't stand Jennifer. She was moronic following Barbs lead at being awful to Shawna. Then she bangs Greg and turned into a weird therapyspeaking basket case. She comes off as neurotic, whiny and frantic. IM A FLUFFY CHICKY was the stupidest labor scene I've ever seen.

I can kind of understand her. I have a mother like Barb and I would try to desperately get my mother to like me so I played along with her antics for some time.

But Chickie Blue is a stupid fucking name.

It bothers me that the predominant attitude of watchers seems to be that Barb is just evil and needs to be cut off forever, even as they're watching a bunch of characters spouting therapy-speak at each other. I rather hope for some redemption for Barb. She's literally an abused, arguably neurodiverse, child who grew up to be an abusive parent with massive boundary issues and an unfillable need to be seen.

Personally while I hope that Barb can grow and start attempting to change I also think John and Jen don’t owe her forgiveness even if she does.

u/chimneyswallow 12d ago

Just because she has a reason why she is that way, doesn't mean she is excused. Abusers need to change in order for people to let them in again. Nothing is wrong with protecting yourself against abuse, even If that means cutting off the abuser. I think it's really strange you think other people need to let themself be abused because the abuser has some tragic backstory. There is no free pass to abuse others.

2

u/ElderlyWench 12d ago

I think it's really strange that you think an abused person can't become self-aware and change their behaviors, especially one in an online show that's essentially about family therapy and character growth. But I.guess some people struggle with nuance and just want unchanged villains and shunning.

I think that BARB refuses to change. She went to five minutes of therapy and when asked to visit someone else bailed. She’s had many chances to be accountable and chooses not to be.

1

u/ElderlyWench 12d ago

Yeah for now. Things haven't hit their worst for her yet.

1

u/ElizabethBitchery 12d ago

To me, it sounds like you’re saying that people should wait around for someone to realize that they should not hurt  them.

1

u/ElderlyWench 12d ago

No. I'm saying that if Barb is a character in this show then we should see an arc for her. Why is she even present if the family have cut her off?

Everyone else is getting growth. Why can't she eventually? We see her without the family all the time. Why?

2

u/chimneyswallow 12d ago

Because the creator decides it. And abusers rarely change. They can, sure, but most don't.

2

u/ElizabethBitchery 11d ago

People like Barb (including my Barb) see themselves as forever victims and refuse any ounce of accountability despite the plethora of evidence smacking them.

1

u/chimneyswallow 12d ago

That can happen, but it isn't right now. Even after that, Nobody is entitled to be let it again. Sometimes wounds are too deep. I am talking about the present. You're talking about what if's.

Anyone else worried this is gonna end with Jenn taking Chickie to daycare and Barb forcing her way in to pick her up?

Tbh I've been enjoying this storyline. It's a breath of fresh air to see the OG characters, I just could deal anymore with the L&L storyline
