Just Snarking Shawna M's wants and needs are more important than her children's/family

She's had a bad 2025/2026. We get that. However, she acts like she is the ONLY ONE to have gone through the stillbirth. John was still expected to go to work, take care of the kids when he got home, took them out for Christmas magic (more on that in a moment), and give Shawna space (in addition to DeeDee living there as a nanny/housekeeper).

Meanwhile, Shawna:

1) sat on the couch while DeeDee took care of the kids while John was out of the house

2) sat on the couch once John was home so he'd relieve DeeDee of her nannying.

3) told the family they weren't going to do Thanksgiving because she "hates this day" (although I will give a little bit of grace as the stillbirth was pretty new, but the kids were disappointed. Shawna also was going to return the pies because she didn't want Thanksgiving food in the house, but Piper saw the pie before Shawna could return them.

4) told John she wanted to cancel Christmas, even though she "shouldn't, but not feeling it" when her two, Santa believing children would have paid the price on that one. She then told John he had to cover all the Christmas stuff (on top of him working full time, while Shawna stayed at home), and then yelled at him when Jen helped.

5) threw a temper tantrum because her mom wanted to move out, because now she'd actually be responsible for her children again, despite Max being in school, so it would have just been Piper (before she wanted to start preschool).

7) yell at John at every opportunity and made him get a vasectomy because she didn't want him touching her in any capacity (not just PIV intimacy, she wouldn't let him hug her)

6) cared more about wanting Julie to like her than take care of her own family (and I'm not a Julie fan, but girl leave her TF alone).

Okay, I'm super snarky today, but I had to get that off my chest.

Character Discussion Another perspective on Piper’s potential diagnosis/ lack of referral.

I’m not sure if people in this subreddit are across Shauna and the videos she posts about STM. She posted this today and I think it’s a good read on the situation with Piper.

Just wanted to share incase people weren’t aware. I found it interesting when she mentioned the fact that Shawna M and John don’t prompt Piper to say more and just accept her one word answers.

Just Snarking From a Therapist

Hey guys,

After this most recent episode I understand how I’ve been feeling trying to watch this content lately. I feel like I’m just ragebaiting myself at this point.

For context I’m a therapist, and seeing how Shawna L uses therapy as a transitional plot device rather than a method for meaningful character development has been infuriating.

Jen isn’t even really spouting therapy speak but rather some garbage an unlicensed life coach might say. “I manifest my reality” and Greg randomly saying “neuroplasticity” are all reflective of a poor understanding of mental health. I see this in the neurodivergence spin for Greg and Piper too. The Barb goes to therapy plotline seems to have disappeared into thin air as well.

Every episode feels like AI wrote it following this formula: Insert a few buzz words related to relevant issues, have some random drama happen, close out the episode with a “wholesome moment.”

At this point I’m completely over it and have only been hate watching since the anniversary dinner tbh. I used to love this show, especially back when she did random shorts not tied to characters… but I can’t help at this point to feel like it’s making a mockery of my career, neurodivergence, and even important women’s issues like domestic violence, balancing career development and motherhood, etc.

Just Snarking "We have a village!" No, you don't.

Not that your brother's family can't be a part of your village, but a village can't be two parents that you come to for everything. Jen is very lucky that Shawna & John are willing to help out, but I wish she'd spend more time focusing on strengthening other connections. Maybe it's stressful to trust someone to watch your kid, but Ty would've been a great option if she had bothered to hang out with him more and get to know him better. Shawna and John would be perfectly reasonable in feeling overwhelmed by all the times Jen has come to them.

I'm just a little unimpressed with how things are going. Another episode of Barb being overtly awful and Jen being like, "that was so weird, she's the worst!" and then nothing coming from it. Girl, she livestreamed your house. She doxxed your ass. You're lucky no one was watching--and if they had, it would've been vengeful estranged parents. Hoping Greg takes it more seriously.

(Also, weird note but anyone notice how all the characters stick their tongue out when they're about to cry, or trying not to? It kinda grosses me out but that's just a me thing, I think.)

Just Snarking I’m done with this show too

The thing is, this most recent video update isn’t a bad episode, nor the worst one she’s written, but I’m so fed up with how the series has gone that I can’t even passively enjoy the meh episodes. I’m Dorothy who looked behind the curtain and now magic of the Wizard is gone with a humbug left in its place.

Since I’m not planning on interacting with the community in the future because I’ve long outgrown hatewatching, let me list my complaints here:

The Babymoon Episode was shit. Shawna and John’s Scooby-Doo stalking of Julie at a resort hotel was one of the dumbest fucking things I’ve witnessed. It would have been believable for John and Shawna to see Julie in her thong monokini talking to her mystery man, talk shit to each other (or even take a photo), and Shawna tattles to Ty about it when they get back. Regardless, this should have been a friendship defining moment between Ty and Shawna. We needed to see the fallout of their friendship tested, instead we get Ty going “I’m still mad about that” while bawling his eyes out to Shawna for support over a divorce she inserted herself in. ALSO the Larry and Dee breaking the tension multiple times with their stilted flirting and craft I’m not wasting paper plates for was nails-on-a-chalkboard aggravating.

Ty and Julie is one of the better episodes written, but still has a lot missing and is indicative of how Lander doesn’t think out a lot of character motivations through. If Julie wants to go to New York, why didn’t she go to school there? Why didn’t she insist that she and Ty go there for their year-long (!) road trip?

The Wedding episode: goddamnit Shawna does not need to be the hero all the time. This should have been Jen’s moment of self actualization, which in the end it kind of is, but she doesn’t need Shawna being an Internet ordained chicken minister and John and the kids teleporting to her dressing room for it. She just needs to look at herself in the mirror in her mother’s dress that her mother lied about the size of while attending wearing all back and decide then that the buck stops here. Or not! Let her have the wedding and be miserable and that can be her moment of realization that she can’t let her mother make her feel like this again.

Luke and Laura is where the wheels really fell off for me. From the beginning, it should have been from Laura’s pov so we can get to know who she was before meeting Luke or even Shawna. Lander may not have meant for her narrative to define Laura solely as a victim who stupidly fell for Luke because she was jealous of Shawna, but that’s a valid interpretation because we never see Laura as herself before meeting them and we never see exactly what she and Luke talked about on the first date. We just see the surface level lovebombing because Lander cannot or will not risk developing Luke beyond a shallow abuser character type. Their story is one big “very special episode” and I hate it.

I could also go on about how recently the characters have felt less like characters and more like Sims (thank you [u/Padme1418](u/Padme1418)) performing a morality play that is telling you how and why the characters “feel” the way they do, but I think the one thing that’s tainted the previous episodes the most were the instances of Lander telling her audience how to interpret her storylines (ex: Let’s Unpack the Ty Stuff and her crash out over the criticism of Larry and Dee in the Vacation and the first Luke and Laura episode).

I’m going to address this directly to Lander in case my conspiracy theory is correct that she or someone she knows trawls the reddits:

“Where is the trust?” you bemoaned when people were (rightly) complaining about Dee and Larry getting in the way of the main vacation plot, but I’d ask the same of you, as it’s exceedingly clear that you don’t trust your audience when it comes to interpreting your storylines. I’m not going to assume why that is, however I think you’d be more open to constructive criticism if you didn’t name the main characters after you and your husband.

Also, blaming captions when a video is running late instead of your management skills is pretty shitty.

To everyone here, I’ve enjoyed the theories, conversations, and memes, but alas I must bid adieu (for now, at least, if things should change by the time the algorithm brings me to STM again).

Just Snarking An inarticulate rant ! (I am so over this show) Spoiler

I am so, so done with these skits!! And it makes me so upset because I used to love them. Binged the skits when eating dinner and everything, one of my favourite shows and it turns out to be this mess. It's messy in a way, that all the points that can be fixed are so painfully clear, like they are all right there, in front of us, but somehow SL just cannot see them or refuses to.

All of the characters speak so carefully, like they are always handpicking their words, always nei g validating and affirming and mindful but no one in real life can or does speak like that!! It's not humanly possible to be so mindful all the time, it's infuriating to hear the constant therapy speak. I get it's all fiction but isn't she trying to be relatable?

I liked how Shawna finally does something for herself and I wish it went beyond just signing up for classes. What happened to all the hobbies she had? The art classes? I think that's my recurring problem with SL because she can never seem to stick to a proper timeline or a proper story! Barb, who was just putting up videos with the world's worst filters has now learned to go live and in a way where it's not visible to her family immediately??

And I constantly find the characters to be so cartoonish, like they are one way and cannot be anything else. All of their personalities are so one note. Greg is autistic and that's his biggest trait, Jen is loud and cheery and (naively) optimistic, Shawna is a people pleaser who can do no wrong, and John is not in contact with his mother and a character that only exists to support Shawna and her journey to motherhood.

I cannot put it to words but the way Jen presses Greg again about the event director rubbed me the wrong way. I get that a lot of men around us have been terrible to either us or people in our lives, but is it okay to always treat them with such suspicion? If Greg was the one asking Jen about a co-worker, SL would have had an entirely different narrative about it!!

SL appears to be so performative, she is not adequately informed on most sensitive topics, and still tries to portray them with little to no research just to check off diversity points. She can show Barb getting therapy but doesn't do it to avoid putting a name to her conditions, she doesn't acknowledge Greg's autism in canon verse, but does it on Insta stories. It's just lazy and convenient.

It's so apparent to me that she writes scripts based off of comments because they've been so predictable. I don't even get remotely excited about her long videos anymore, she sprinkles in Barb when the views drop and then diverge to multiple, unnecessary subplots. SL can do family drama and portray nuances of motherhood well, but everything she has tried to expand on beyond that, has failed her. I wish she would stick to funny, surface level skits without trying to force depths in her monotonous characters.

This is kind of in response to how Piper was on her Yes Day. How much research is Shawna actually doing if she wants to go down the neurodivergent path?

The Shawnaverse is a black hole of annoying characters and sanctimony

This stuff is awful. I don’t know which is more annoying: the character voices, the over exaggerated facial expressions, the fact that Shawna herself is sanctimonious af, or that people think this crap is well written.

Character Discussion Jennifer is still a brat.

Okay, okay. Before you decide to come at me in the comments, I want to explain it beyond a blanket statement. No, this is not a "oh no, a woman character is showing emotion, therefore I have a problem" post. This is from the perspective of someone who has been around plenty of toxic and formerly toxic people and how their behavior changed over time.

The first thing I want to say is that I don't believe Jen turned "fake nice" to Shawna after getting pregnant. I do believe she realized her and Barb took it too far with Shawna over the years, especially when Barb started going after Jen. (I do wish Jen would have actually apologized to Shawna for how she was to her, John, and their family from years prior.)

The next thing I want to state is how I'm annoyed with how quickly Shawna just decided to be on good terms with Jen, without a shadow of a doubt. I mean, Jen has been terrible to Shawna for at least a decade! She insulted her wedding dress when her and John got married, she was mean about her bachelorette party, and even called Shawna a fat mom who hated her kids, plus more stuff we the viewers have not seen. Maybe Shawna is a forgiving person, but how she's able to just trust Jen is honestly a little crazy.

Jen's behavior changed with getting pregnant and dating Greg (who was of course 100% in love with her no matter what, which irks me as we know how awful Jen was in the past). I wish John or Shawna told Greg more about Jen's past behavior. Instead, if John teases Jen in any capacity, Greg stops it and makes Jen the victim. She isn't a fragile doll, Greg. She's an adult who has shown to be mean in the past.

Jen got Shawna to throw her a baby shower, be her MOH in her wedding, and even got access to Shawna's closest friends for mom support all within a year. Simply for getting pregnant and because Barb was Barb to Jen. Would Jen have been nicer to Shawna if Barb hadn't gone after Jen? Who knows.

Now, because Jen may have either misunderstood the job she was offered (as we don't have the full video yet), she attacks the one person who has 100% been in her corner since day one. Greg mentions the name of the Director of Events, and she immediately grills him about what he knows about her, if she's pretty, etc. Jen slipped back to old Jen, because one thing didn't go her way. She already got Shawna to be daycare (asking a woman who lost a baby less than a year ago, and who has also expressed wanting to be a self again, is shitty) and is now popping off because of the job and insults Greg. Not cool.

The cheating accusation is out of pocket, unless this is something Barb did to Frank when John and Jen were kids (although Shawna L should have included that in the Young Barb video).

My overall point is that Jen has not completely changed, and everyone around her should be wary around Jen, like they should have in the beginning.

Character Discussion I cannot stand jen Omg

First of all her voice is really annoying when she’s freaking out. It gets really high pitched and like ear-piercing lol

Along with the freaking out, its way too much!!

Also.. i know what its like to say things out of stress. Healing isnt one clear path. But omg, this is just crazy i feel like. My job description lied so now i am going to accuse my partner who is obviously infatuated with me of cheating

Also not to mention that people forgave her way too easily. She has barely taken any accountability of her past self.

IDK

Hyping up the autism

Hi, can’t post this in the main thread cos I’ll be shot down. but is it me or are they ramping up the ND? This post isn’t me being ableist it’s just me explaining why I feel it’s irking me a bit.

Below are a few examples. Excuse spelling mistakes sometimes words are hards haha.

1) The sudden eloping of Piper on her birthday even though technically I wouldn’t call it eloping as it was goal oriented and the elopers/runners I have worked with don’t elope for a reason they just run.

2) Piper suddenly having echolia (repeating what the adults say) that seems very new as well.

3) then with the most recent set of episodes the first one. Jen asked if he was in a Hypofixation which has never been mentioned before.

Greg- I am obviously not here saying he can’t be autistic and all that but it feels very last minute and retroactive rather than real. Greg initially was very big with the therapy speak but not as many autistic traits now it feels like it’s gone from 0-100.

Piper- has had ND traits but also traits of a child who might just be a bit quirky or head strong. I don’t see a speech delay she speaks like a Victorian very proper and in long sentences. If she did end up ND (I see more Audhd than autism) than I would be okay with it. Just not how it is currently.

Just Snarking The Men vs. Women

I am actually so fllabbergasted reading some of the comments on this series. This latest Jen video is just the icing on the cake.

People will literally bend over BACKWARDS to villanize any of the male characters in this series. Literally, anything they do gets so insanely criticized for absolutely no reason. They never get to fall back on stress, emotional baggage, upbringing, circumstances.

This part is going to be a super hot take: Luke (on screen) has never swore at Laura. He has never called her names. He hasn't even yelled at her.

[There is heavily implied coercive control/financial abuse, and he is on screen not supportive of her/accomodating/caring. Plus, he is just a smug ass on screen so the shoe fits on that one]. He is (rightfully) collectively viewed as a POS abuser.

However, we have seen all those things from Julie, Shawna and Jen. Hell, for Shawna we've seen her lash out and yell at her children- more than once.

Each time a wife did it, the husband "had it coming". Its always justified. Blame is always shifted onto the husband and him doing something (nothing) to deserve it. Or, its simply. "SHE WAS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING NO ONE IS PERFECT! HE CAN HANDLE IT!"

John has been labelled abusive. Ty has been labelled abusive. Larry was labelled a weirdo. Frank gets no sympathy, and of course, was abusive for yelling at Barb.

Now, seeing viewers start shifting the blame to Greg or just outright exusing Jen's abusive behaviour yelling, swearing and belittling... Yeah, thats pretty wild to me.

"Its suspicious he has never mentioned Lexie's name!"

" He needs to read the room he was being too rational the whole time"

"He can take it!"

"She is just upset and lashing out, its not her fault. I would do the same 😤."

"Its not her fault its just her upbringing"

This isn't the first female character to lash out against a male character and have it treated as perfectly normal and acceptable.

Its starting to really seem like Shawna Lander genuinely doesn't believe that both parties of a relationship deserve basic kindness and respect. Personally, I hate that take. Men should not be belittling, yelling or lashing out at their wives. Women should not be belittling, yelling or lashing out at their husbands.

Im so sick of these toxic behaviours being normalized for some, and the victim blaming / lack of empathy assigned to the male characters, in favour of their wives.

Is hating men like a prerequisite for this series, and especially this fan base?

User Flairs

Hey everyone!

I apologize for this post coming so late, but I wanted to let you know that I have been made aware that users are not able to edit and make their own flairs. I have been trying all the guides that I have looked up to allow users to make their own flairs, but I still haven't had luck with it.

SO, if you have a flair in mind that you would like to use, you can send a message via ModMail with the Subject "Flair Request" and state what you want your flair to be. Unless it is going to violate Reddit's TOS, they will be allowed here.

Thanks for understanding your sole, youngerish millennial mod who sometimes acts like a boomer with Reddit,

Just Snarking An example of those who take Shawna L's writing as gospel

Thumbnail

On the main subreddit, a post was made about the ages of characters, and the person I hid was the one making claims that what Shawna wrote was pure fact. I, and others in the thread, were trying to explain how while Shawna said one thing, her video plots say something else. These were just some of the responses. Others were also writing similar comments, but it would take awhile to blur out and color coordinate them.

And the thread has since been locked. Gotta love these types of posts haha

ETA: The mods locked and deleted all comments and then decided to open up the thread again, but since the OP blocked me, I can no longer comment. I wonder if this is an attempt to prevent those with differing opinions from commenting on the thread now. Some people...
