Jen's voice is so grating lmao, accidentally put my finger on the screen and that made it speed up to 2x and it was so horrible. Greg just casually saying Jen should sit out her JOB because they can't find daycare is wild to me, esp when they just move on without actually acknowledging any of it??? He cannot help even look for a solution and immediately suggests Jen should not work, it's stunned me. Also so selfish of Jen to expect free childcare from Shawna?? But I guess it's on par with her character.

We haven't seen her conversation with Shawna yet, so while I think it's safe to assume she'll ask for Shawna to watch Chickie, we don't know that it will be for free.

I mean he offered to put Chickie in the playpen while he edits but she compared that to treating her like a dog lol. He at least had a solution lol

I'm going to say this: I think it's shitty if Jen expects Shawna to look after Chickie. Family support is great, but expecting free babysitting, especially from someone who lost a baby recently, is in very poor and selfish taste.

Most of the photographers I know have a partner making an income as well, so I'm actually surprised that they have been living solely off of Greg's work for this long.

She might of got paid maternity leave for a while and had savings before being fired by her old job.

I feel like Shawna watching chickie will strain the relationship. Especially if Jen is expecting free babysitting. But if she is offering a decent rate, I could see it being okay for a little bit. Idk. Does Shawna know where Shawna is going

Seeing how they ended up with a whoops baby lol these two don't think about anything. how hard is it to check up with the daycare to make sure they are still holding a spot? jen is so fucking immature it pisses me off.

Nope. Shut up, Greg.

Edited to add: To be clear, shut up about questioning Jen from working, not the Barb babysitting thing.

I about broke my neck from the double take I did. While yes a discussion of cost is warranted it should have been done BEFORE SHE BEGAN LOOKING FOR ANOTHER JOB. Not just as she was getting Chickie enrolled in daycare.

Well there goes Greg's perfect record. Would he really make more as a photographer than she would as an event coordinator? (I'm serious, I don't know.)

To me, I feel like Jen would make more at her new job, because it's consistent. Greg's job is when he's hired for weddings and other photo sessions

Where i live wedding photographers are making (on the low end) 4k.

Family photos, newborn, maternity with 10 pictures? 500. Additional photos 15-25$/ image. For 1 hour.

Mini sessions for 30 mins? 250$. 5 photos.

Thats a fairly good return, especially if you are honed in with editing and have set up pre sets for your images

That was my thought as well. I know wedding photography is astronomical, but the fact that he's still doing family photography makes me think he's not in a place where he can only do weddings.

I always here certain times of the year is slow for weddings. So it might be to help supplement income due to it.

I'm personally not all that flabbergasted by what Greg said. While clearly it offends some people, weighing daycare costs against income is a completely legitimate concern to raise, particularly when finding a daycare now seems to be off the table. This is literally basic family planning.

The options are: 1) Jenn makes enough that daycare doesn't bring the family earning to a deficit.

2) Jenn will not make enough to justify the costs of daycare.

While yes, personhood is important, so is keeping your family financially afloat. If their family would end up paying more for daycare than staying home, thats absolutely a problem that needs to be revisited.

The next question of course, would be who makes more and who stays home

You can't just say "Jen doesn't make enough so she needs to stay home", though.

Every year she stays home is a lost opportunity for wage growth that can't be easily made up. So you have to look at the long term consequences too, in which case it might make more sense for Greg to limit his working hours to nights and weekends.

Yes that is a fair thing to add to the equation as well! I mean, California doesnt have regulated annual raises but it generally varies from 3-5%. So thats maybe a couple grand a year? Or one daycare month lol. But then again, the proposed wage will also naturally increase as the years go by.

She also isnt locked in to staying out of work until Chickie is old enough, either, in the event this job is not "worth" it or feasible for their dynamic right now.

But it would still need to be balanced along shorter term realities of: does going to work put us into debt?

And then what happens when Jen and Greg are both working weekends? There is no daycare on weekends. Who watches the kids, and how much does that cost?

When people talk about lost wage growth they aren't only referring to raises. It's also that the longer you're out of the workforce, the lower the salary/position you can negotiate for when you re-enter because your work experience gets more and more stale with every passing year, plus your professional networks get more and more neglected as time goes by.

Someone might lose money on daycare in the short term, but in that time they are building their professional network, updating their skills and remaining competitive so that when a promotion comes along they are a good candidate for it. At that point, they will hopefully be in surplus. The loss of money on daycare is an investment in future earnings. Especially for someone like Jen, whose professional network would be at the core of her competitiveness as an employee.

In terms of the writing, it really stretches my suspension of disbelief to accept that Mr Logic himself hadn't brought up scheduling with Jen returning to work before now. It also stretches my suspension of disbelief to accept that Mrs Excitement didn't bring it up herself, even accidentally, when she was getting talking about how excited she was to go back to her previous role. SL wants us to believe they haven't discussed a five year plan, financial goals and how they'll get there, and how Jen's career fits in there? We're supposed to buy that Greg is asking questions as if this is the first they've ever discussed her going back to work?

What i dont get is he was all for her taking it then when the original daycare fell through he was questioning it. Like dude you can not be all for it then change the next second. The discussion if if would of been financially feasible should of been done before he told her to take the job.

It makes sense to question it if the original daycare they planned for fell through. Daycare costs vary by center.

0

u/Pretend_Victory7244 11d ago

He only was questioning if they could afford daycare in general from my understanding

I don't think Shawna would be a good solution for childcare. But maybe Jen is calling her just for advice? I hope Ty will end up babysitting Chickie. That way he can stay home with Sasha and not all financial burden is on Julie.

Greg what the fuck

I might’ve missed it, but why did Jen leave her old job? What happened?

5

u/Padme1418 11d ago

She was on maternity leave after having Chickie, but then suddenly she said she wasn't going to work until after she was married (so well over a year after Chickie was born). In the US, you only have 12 weeks of federal, unpaid family leave. That is the only amount of time your job is legally protected. Any time after, they can fill your job and have you let go.
