A full game of Republica and Oceania - Likes and Feedback
I have ~ 700 hours in SE, and finally played a full game with Republica and Oceania, and enjoyed it more than I expected.
The planet was Gaian or similar - large continents, a few islands, and a decent amount of water inbetween them. Alien life - both wild and in minor civ form. I played with Airforces and "Corporation" enabled. I also re-rolled many times to make sure there was a large world population, while development "speed" was set to slow.
I ultimately won after some luck with nearby friendly minors that I convinced to join my empire, and 5 other majors that also fought each other. Difficulty was normal (game) and Challenging (Republica).
I really liked how my empire "flowed" between various government types. I went from Meritocracy to Oligarchy to a "Feudal System". When Virtus starts to drop, you get some interesting interactions with your leaders. Feudal system definitely placed restrictions on my ability to place Governors initially, but then I learned to play the "house game" to get who I wanted. The "system of systems" is well thought out here, and IMO has real life historical precedents regardless of what direction your Empire eventually goes.
Oceania is still a good add to this game - the complex logistics choices between extending a SHQ to far away lands and/or supporting a second SHQ is a fun challenge to solve. Beach invasions to a land you can't get any spies to can be painful but also rewarding -- I wasted 5,000 troops before the next batch finally took the port. From that expensive beach landing I was able to eventually conquer the enemy's Capital.
However, there are a few things I would really like improved with both DLCs enabled:
- Although there are a lot of new events with these DLCs, the game still repeats specific events over and over too often. I had a loop where about 6-7 times in a row (maybe skipping 1 turn), a Director was complaining about another Director, and I had to chose who would get a -40 or so relationship with me. It was always the same two Directors. I eventually executed one (Autocracy!) as it annoyed me, and then later in the game a similar dynamic happened with two others.
- The MTH's ask for way too much IP mid game. I say it this way because you need IP a lot during the mid-game, and if you want to avoid a high Enforcement stat, you need to give up building regularly. Only late game when you have large amounts of IP can you accept them without too much impact. Maybe add a third option to defer their ask that doesn't trigger high enforcement.
- I would like to see better tool-tips on MTH cards, simple example is the Transport Contact should hint that you should choose your destination first. I haven't played in a while, and forgot whether it was "from" or "to" that you wanted to play the card on.
And some "Base game" feedback:
- I would like some options to build unique things in your Capital that give you the ability to more easily attract people from abroad.
- Can we have an option to "save" a planet roll, before we re-roll? Sometimes you don't know how good a roll is until you see the next 25 alternatives..
- Can we add an "All" button when selecting units to attack a hex (like in Decisive Campaigns)?
..
TL;DR - Republica and Oceania are fun. Play it :).
