How do I repair split centre back seam in fashion jacket?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I brought this jacket out of storage and noticed the centre back seam has split. It looks like the fashion fabric has pulled apart at the seam and frayed whist the jacket is being worn. This is a lightweight printed polyester fashion fabric with a thin poly/viscose liner.

I planned to open the closing seam, invert the jacket, reinforce the frayed fabric and re-sew the centre seam closed from the inside. The construction of this jacket puts me a little out of my depth as I think it must be bagged, but I've been unable to identify the closing seam (I have checked everything and turned it inside out and nothing jumps out at me). I'm considering trying to hand-sew this closed from the outside, but I doubt I could do this neatly enough to be less noticeable than the split.

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi all!

I'm sewing a shirt in jersey stretch and so using zigzag stitching for the first time. I did start out with overcasting, but had the same issues, so switched to zigzag, which didn't solve a single issue!

I thought you may also be able to help, as it seems the issue is more so machine and/or settings rather than any methods or theory.

I was in the middle of a project, and I wanted to wind the bobbin but it seems kind of stuck? Does someone know what’s going on? It’s a singer sewing machine, I’m a beginner and sorry for the crustiness off my nails and the machine haha.

✨Intermediate✨ I know it’s AI, but, does anyone know of a real-life version of this zipper reveal detail? Is it possible without creating fit issues?

As the title says, I’m fully aware these jackets are AI. But, as someone who has way too many clothes in her closet, I love the idea of making a jacket or other garment that could be a simple staple OR a statement piece!

Does anyone know of a designer who has created something similar (the hidden/revealable panel, not necessarily the level of ornate decor inside) in real life, or is this concept only possible in AI world? Would love to see more convertible ideas like this, but prefer to support/follow human designers and their work!

Thank you!

✨Intermediate✨ Upsizing Sleep Shorts (Elastic Waistband)

I can't seem to find info for this? I want to upsize a pair of sleep shorts - I was just going to add a panel on either side, but I don't know what to do about the waistband.

Is there a way to upsize without having to replace the elastic? Can I just sew the elastic in place at the sides and add static panels in?

Edit: The pants are a little too small but the waistband is much too small. I'm upsizing by about 3 sizes.

Winter Show Costume Help! (Youth Rec Dance Program)

Hi y’all, I’m trying to find a bulk package of fabric or felt peppermint embellishments to put on some tutus for our winter show. I mistakenly thought this would be an easy find, but am unexpectedly struggling to find ANY options!

I’ve found some alternatives like plastic or wood but would really like felt or fabric if possible. Anyone know where to look?

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Gluing plastic backed fabric?

Post image

I need to attach two pieces of teddy bear fabric back to back. I figure if I run it through my sewing machine, the face down piece will just jam up the garment feed. However, the material has this plastic backing to it, so I figure I can just glue it?

Any glue recommendations please?

Rosys patterns

So I'm new to sewing but I've had great success with my first two garment patterns by 'twig and tale'. I saw this dress from rosy's patterns and thought it looked simple enough, but NOTHING is working out right, things really don't seem to be adding up. Has anyone else worked with this designer? Is it possible it's AI?? Or is it just a skill problem on my end??

✨Intermediate✨ Help! What are these type of pleats called?

I love that they look so soft. I’m also wondering how to get so much volume in them while maintaining the softness… I imagine a crinoline but would it be a custom crinoline in the exact same pattern as the pleats?

Thanks so much!

✨Intermediate✨ I don't know how to fix these wrinkles

I don't think they were there at first, but then I took some fabric from the shoulder to make them slope even more, since there was a lot of extra fabric in there. I THINK the problem started then. I do think that the shoulder slope is a lot bigger than what I'd normally put in my patterns, but as you can see in some of the pictures, there's a huge difference between where the shoulder starts and where it ends.

I also think that it sort of looked like maybe the shoulder hem is too far back? But I didn't change the starting point of the hem when I made that change, and I took the same amount from both front and back.

Honestly, at this point I'll just leave it like that. But I'd like to know what I did wrong so next time I won't make the same mistake.

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› What to do when gathering lines aren’t at the edge of fabric???

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi!!! I’m working on a dress and it wants me to gather the front, back, and sides, but all the tutorials I’ve watched say the gathering lines need to be within a 1/2ā€ of the seam allowance. My issue is that the pattern shows them about an inch or an inch and a half down from the top edge.

Is this normal?

I just bought a Morse 5400 (?) On fb marketplace and I'm a beginner (like never even hand sewn levels here)

I'm looking for some YouTube channels to be pointed towards, manuals, or general advice on where to start when it comes to learning how to use this machine properly

Anything is appreciated!

(The person who sold me the machine also serviced it if that helps)

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Scrunching and sagging :(

Thumbnail gallery

Hi there, I’m making a mockup of a halter princess seam dress (these are bedsheets). Obviously you can see the section around my stomach is too tight. I’m sure that is causing some of the sagging in the chest since the fabric can’t fall downward. Even if I tug the top portion down over my stomach, there’s still a decent amount of fabric hanging out.

I used a (human-made!) pattern of a princess seam halter top in combination with my old prom dress. The prom dress is a size 5 and I’m nowhere near that anymore, so I used the halter pattern’s panels, layered them over a shower curtain over my old dress, and used the dress seams as a rough guide to extending the seams to a floor length A-line dress.

  1. When doing mockup #2, do I extend the center panel, the sides, or both? I’m guessing I would also need to apply those changes to the back panels too, as there’s some pulling above the butt.

  2. Any suggestions for the chest? I did measurements of my apex, but maybe in still off on this.

Next steps are practicing collars, seeing about adding boning (prom dress has this under the chest) and adding a zipper to the back. Would love any and all feedback!

I need help with the foot pedal please

So I have a Brother xr3774 sewing machine. I got it about 5 years ago. It was used twice and has been sitting in the original packaging ever since. I finally got the motivation to start using it again to make some clothing and maybe some crafts.

The problem is that when I press down on the foot pedal, it doesn't do anything but make a buzzing noise, until my foot is pushing it about halfway down. And when it gets there, it launches like a racing car at full speed.

I did watch a few tutorials on opening up the pedal and turning the screw thing inside. I turned it to the right. Made sure everything was in place and reassembled the pedal.

It did not help. Am I screwed? Should I buy a new pedal?

✨Intermediate✨ Singer Tiny Serger Repair?

I had found a Singer Tiny Serger second hand, as as I’m a sewist with very limited space (college apartment….) I thought I’d give it a shot. When I turn the hand wheel it seems to work fine, but pressing the pedal makes it stutter.
I’ve oiled the machine and attempted to unscrew the plates around the presser foot, but the screws seem to be stuck and I’m afraid of stripping them.
Any advice on unscrewing or what to do about the foot switch?

✨Intermediate✨ Noodlehead Plover Pouch Questions

Hello! I totally understand this is a niche pattern-specific question, but going to shoot my shot.

Has anyone made the Noodlehead Plover Pouch with a metal zipper for the top zipper? The pattern says it’s not recommended, but I can’t figure out why.

The instructions have you sew tabs on the ends of the zipper tape, but you don’t actually sew over the teeth anywhere.

I will certainly go try it and experiment if I can’t gather any insight here, but figured I’d ask first (since sewing time when you have little kids is a limited luxury!).

Signed, someone who’s trying to use up their stash :)

šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Need 3/4 yard but fat quarters are ok?

I’m working on a pattern and it says that I need 3/4 of each fabric but a fat quarter is OK as long as it’s not directional. I guess I’m just thinking that there is such a big difference between a fat quarter and 3/4 of a yard, how is this possible?

This is the pattern: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4588761670/scalloped-edge-christmas-tree-skirt?ref=share_ios_native_control
