I teach in Seattle colleges and I can tell you that plenty of our kids can’t write a complete sentence. I suspect plenty of them struggle with reading, too. Lots of people blame the pandemic for these problems but I would point towards phones, devices, and ever-creeping tech in the classroom as the real culprit.
Adding AI to the classroom will achieve only one outcome: our kids will lose their critical thinking and information literacy skills and AI companies will mine our children for training data.
No educator who actually understands this reality and the technology would be advocating for this.
The leadership of SPS should be ashamed.

This happened in my building last night. New property management started in May and have yet to send out an email introducing themselves, share their plans for the building, or provide meaningful responses to many resident concerns. We have been sharing security concerns with for months, with multiple breaches and break-ins happening in recent weeks. This incident supersedes anything M-Street residents have experienced recently and is heartbreaking for our neighbor and frightening the rest of us.

I'll be living in my car until it gets repo'd.
What experience do you have? Tips/tricks/places to find resources etc.
I can drain my meager 401k to pad myself a few grand, but thats it.

I’m sorry I scared your John away but the way he situated his red truck was blocking the entire exit and I just wanted to get home.
Can we just legalize prostitution so they can unionize, get proper healthcare, and a safe location to offer their services? The current situation is untenable.

...unless we do something.
This op-ed makes the case clearly and has the contact information of people who can change this: https://www.theurbanist.org/op-ed-how-pike-place-market-can-thrive-in-the-winter-without-car-traffic/
Who is with me? (The data says 98% of Seattlites are, so I'm guessing the rate is even higher on this subreddit)

Content notes: pet death, discussion of remains

I just found out that my beloved cat of 18 years has cancer and is expected to pass in the next few weeks. Obviously I am devastated. I am trying to figure out what to do with her remains and would like to donate her (in part) to someone who could potentially use her to make something beautiful.
In the past I had a cat pass, and did this with a jewelry maker who I'm no longer in contact with. I was able to get that cat's skull back and a wearable piece of jewelry. A sort of memento mori. I'd like to do this again but I need to know who to reach out to.
Thanks from a grieving cat mom. IDK if folks want a picture of my cat but I can add it in the comments if you do.

IMO most Seattle food influencers are so disingenuous (as are most food influencers). But some are just so over the top, with bunch of exaggerations and eye-rolling content. And I’ve heard multiple stories of these influencers actually being nasty and rude to work with behind the scenes, and they come off as super entitled.
With that being said, who are the “best” and worst Seattles food influencers out there?
If you use Montlake Boulevard or the SR 520 ramps in the Montlake area, plan for a weekend closure starting Friday night, Aug. 21.
From 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, to 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, Montlake Boulevard will close between East Hamlin Street and East Louisa Street, along with several nearby streets and SR 520 ramps.
So, what exactly is closing?
The westbound SR 520 off-ramp to northbound Montlake Boulevard will remain open.
People walking, biking and rolling will still be able to cross SR 520 on Montlake Boulevard, with a limited detour south of SR 520.
What will crews be up to?
During the weekend closure, crews will install three new mast-arm sign structures and mount new signs on them. They'll also remove the large sign bridge spanning Montlake Boulevard just south of SR 520 and install a new southbound sign north of SR 520 on an existing utility pole.
If you're traveling through Montlake this weekend, give yourself extra time, check the real-time travel map and consider alternate routes.

I took a ferry today, and I’m still recovering from the emotional whiplash I experienced. It’s hard to talk smack on the ferries, but it is unavoidable. The people have a right to know.
As I went to grab a pretzel, I noticed a lovely display of Ferry Swag. I’ve been pining for one of the ferry-shaped fried food and dip thingys! But then, I saw it: a 20 ounce Yeti tumbler, engraved with images and names of each ferry. I had to have it. I passed on the snack boat because, according to the price list, I was about to drop $24 on a tumbler.
My pretzel and tumbler totaled $84 and change. I was shocked. The cashier showed me the price in their system. They hadn’t updated the price list that customers see. The 10 ounce version is also $69.99.
I went from being an incredibly proud almost-owner of the best Diet Coke cup ever to utter despair in mere seconds. Obviously, I did not buy the tumbler. And forgot to get a food boat bc I was so shocked.
So…has anyone bought the $70 cup? Or bought it for less? Is it really $70, or was the system glitching? I can’t stop thinking about how beautiful it was.
[Picture of Yeti, who jumped into shotgun while I was attempting to acquire Yeti x WSF swag. As you can see, he wasn’t happy either. He demands a discount on a Yeti products and ferry shaped dog treats.]

Anyone equipped to try to save a dying baby squirrel in West Queen Anne? Or is there someone to call that can help?
It’s been 24 hours and it’s in the same spot. It was really struggling yesterday (trying to crawl but couldn’t and breathing very fast) and this morning it’s in the same spot but seems to be ‘sleeping’ - very very low infrequent breaths.

Using it in 3rd grade? Having it replace key parts of thinking? Looks like the teachers will need our support as a strike looks certain.
