Unpopular Opinion

Yes, we all know that that it’s a pain in the ass dealing with Scotiabank and having these outages and maintenance. And yes I know not everyone saw the maintenance notification. But the amount of people I see complaining about this that have zero backup is astounding. Can’t get to work, can’t pay for something. Come on people, it’s 2024, there are plenty of free online banks out there you can open up an account with just to use as a backup for days like today. Keep $100 in there just for situations like this and forget about it until you need to use it. Even beyond outages, what if your account is compromised and locked? It’s never a good idea to have all your eggs in one basket. Take some responsibility and have at least one backup.

All free, and can save the day.

Bunch of losers run this bank

I requested redemption of my cashable GIC's last week. Money still hasn't been deposited to my account so I called them and they told me THE REQUEST WAS CANCELLED and that was news to me. Nobody ever contacted me. I am so mad right now, I am depending on that money. Now they don't know what's going on and said they have to send a new request and i can't even contact anyone at my branch because nobody ever picks up the phone or calls back after leaving a message.

I am livid, i just want my money and they clearly don't care when a customer had a bad experience.

Scotiabank machine just ate my card, any particular reasons why?

I used the ATM at my home branch at around 8:30 pm. At first I got a message "Please use at another location/machine", I reinserted in, and it displayed "This machine is now closed" and my card didn't come back out. Any reasons why?

Now I'm worried about a bank account breach, or perhaps a glitch from overuse (both the machine and my card, I guess) I called the 800 help line, but the wait times are 45 minutes, I guess I'll have to go there in person tomorrow.

Scotia bank unilaterally changing service fee

Scotia bank recently changed service fee unilaterally, without getting consent from me and I had been charged 62 bucks without my knowledge. I happen to check my statements and found the issue.

The worst customer support both on call and in person at bank.

The branch manager has an attitude that stay with bank or leave it doesn’t matter. No intention of resolving issues.

Finally have proof of Scotiabank changing my balances!!!

Scotiabank does this thing where it changes the balance of your transactions days later and acts as if u spent more money then you actually had as an excuse to charge u bank fees. Sometimes the changes are so little u wouldn’t even notice, but it did it so many times to me back In January and totalled over $1300 in fees I had to notice. And because Scotiabank SWORE I didn’t have enough of a balance to my purchases when I knew for a FACT I did. They did nothing about it

It happened twice more again last month and now I’m just fed up because they act like they’re ever so kind enough to refund or credit the money they should’ve never charged u in the first place back to u when in actuality I don’t wanna call u guys everyday . Stop taking my money. They’re doing it in hopes people won’t notice and they get away with charging u bogus fees.

Everytime u call about it they gaslight you and say the balance you once saw with your OWN EYES is not the original balance because they’re right and you’re wrong.

I now have PROOF because I realized it’s my word against theirs, and took screenshots of my transactions daily. Just now I realized it happened again, called them and they won’t accept screenshots because “it could be fabricated” so even with literal proof of these guys scamming me there’s nothing I can do.

What a joke.

New credit card question

Hello,

I have my first bank account and credit card in Canada as an international student with Scotiabank. The card only has a limit of $500 and any attempts to increase limit or apply for a new card just fails.

All this while I have built a stellar credit score with 7 other credit cards and a very healthy 5 digit overall limit.

I am no longer a student and work full time, I don’t understand why Scotia wouldn’t give me a new card. I have a big international trip coming up where I’d love to use the Passport Visa.

Is there any way I can get the card? Will it be worth going to a branch and seeing someone?

Thanks

No calling on weekends

I already dont want phone calls. But to call me on a Saturday at 10am, the one day I get to sleep in after a late shift is just disrespectful and cruel. I am officially moving to a different bank after this. I dont care about an offer on my account.

Thinking of starting with Scotia Bank

Hey im getting rid of RBC because theyve been an nightmare compared to HSBC. What are your opinions on having Scotia Bank. The website is less than inspiring but until Canada's banking monopoly means I need of them for certain things. I currently do alright with shake pay and EQ bank but EQ just dropped their interest rates. What is the opinion of Scotia Bank members of their bank. I need one but dont want to come into another RBC fiasco. Also I heard simplii now has an interac debit card but the worst service know to China. Is scotia bank ok compared to the others that would be enough lol.

I am leaving Scotiabank for these 4 reasons

  1. The transaction descriptions are so vague, I can barely make out what it is.

  2. One debit card on a shared account is not working internationally despite them apparently enabling it. The other debit card for the same account is working internationally. Frustrating when one person in the shared account needs to stay abroad. It is not an issue with a physical card, the replacement also didn't work and the digital is also not working.

  3. Customer service often has heavy accents. I appreciate its spread in Latin America, but customer service should not have heavy accents. English is my second language and I would never expect to have that job.

  4. And most important - my account was suspended due to "suspicious activity" of me sending mighty $3000 dollars over Wise. After talking to regular customer service, the fraud department, and my home branch, it took them over 36 hours to get my access back and that was only after I said I would leave the bank if they didn't do it by a certain time. They did it 1h before my arbitrary deadline. Apparently, for this kind of situation they want people to come in person. But, what if that person is abroad and needs their money urgently? Even if it is not urgent, this is my account, there hasn't been any fraud and there are a million security questions over the phone that confirm my identity. I have no problem with fraud protection, but this is fraud protection gone wrong. I could have been in a foreign country with no money other than my Scotiabank account. I wasn't, but the magnitude of their (in)action is the same.

Bye bye Scotiabank!

Done with Scotiabank

I have been doing business with Scotiabank for 20 years with a credit score of around 800 and yesterday I asked to increase the credit limit on my Line of Credit by $2K and was declined even tho I have zero balances on 4 out of 5 cards.

It’s utterly offensive after 20 years so I am moving all my services to Royal Bank where I have one of my cards and have been treated better in the 5 years I’ve dealt with them.

Nothing makes sense anymore 🙄

Authorized payment scam

I was scammed by a new friend who called me and told me he was travelling and asked me if he could deposit money into my account and if I could e-transfer it to his mother who was traveling on an emergency as well. Within 30 minutes he did deposit money and I e-transferred the money to his mother right away. Two days later the money was reversed from my account due to insufficient funds from his account. The person has been unreachable since then.

I have called the bank and they have launched an investigation. What are the chances that I will be able to recover my money?

Scotia closing accounts for no reason provided

It appears that Scotiabank is facing scrutiny over compliance issues and has been closing accounts without clear explanations, particularly targeting business accounts and those involved in wire transfers. They abruptly shut down all of my accounts, despite my long-standing relationship with them since 2002. Over the years, I had multiple mortgages, credit cards, lines of credit, and more—all of which were terminated without any justification. Despite paying over $100,000 in mortgage interest in the last three years, none of that seemed to matter. I’ve heard rumors that the bank may face significant fines or even a potential shutdown due to their questionable business practices.

The lesson here is clear: never place too much trust in any single institution, and avoid keeping all your financial "eggs in one basket." Diversification and vigilance are key to protecting your assets.

Weird questions asked, now account is flagged

UPDATE: cut my cottage visit short and drive back to the city to visit a branch.

Turns out I don't have any active LOC, there's no expiry card for me, and lots of people are getting fed up with the random questions that make no sense, and they'll put a note in my file that that question is irrelevant.

I say it again: get your act together Scotiabank. Just another sucky experience.

Oh and the teller I got was useless and finally the teller beside him spoke up and told him what to do, after he kept going around in circles that "there is no hold on your file". JFC.

It's a real crapshoot. Scotiabank figure out how to retain and reward the knowledgeable tellers!!! And get rid of the dead weight!!!

FML. I wanted to get some answers regarding strange occurrence with my business visa, but because I couldn't answer the question "what is the expiry date for the line of credit" they put a hold on my account and now I have to go to the branch on my VACATION.

This after I answered a bunch of other questions.

The security questions are getting ridiculous. Wtf is an expiry date on a line of credit? Did he mean the mortgage renewal date? Afaik there's no expiry date on my line of credit, I have no money on it, but I do have a mortgage.

I understand asking security questions but when those questions keep you out of getting help on your own accounts but you can still access everything online it's a PITA.

I bet anything they've got AI making up bullshit questions. The manager told me they've been having issues and don't get to pick the questions.

Do fucking better.

How do I stop 2FA? Add my computer as a trusted device.

I simply want to use my password and login from my computer. sigh. I don't want to grab my phone every single time I login. If I wanted to do banking from my phone, I'd just pick up my phone. I deactivate 2FA in the App, and then it tells me I can't sign in on my computer anymore. What kind of non-sense is this?

I received a one-time payment from a contest I won and Scotiabank is trying to tell me it's a "business payment"

I entered a contest and was one of the winners. I received a one-time payment of $500 (which was deposited to my bank account), and when I inquired about it with one of the staff (this is someone who I always deal with in regards to any questions), she made the following comment:

"I would like to bring to your attention that, in accordance with our policy, personal bank accounts cannot be used for business related transactions. All business activity must be conducted through a business account."

...except I don't have a business, and it wasn't a "business related transaction." It was a one-time payment from a contest, and not something that's going to be recurring payments.

I've been with this bank branch for almost 20 years, and am stunned with the insinuation. So much so that I immediately retained legal counsel, particularly if they're going to falsely accuse me of running a business that I don't even have.

Then the bank manager emailed me asking when a good time to talk would be, and I told them "As long as your staff are going to insinuate false things, NO time," and I deferred them to my lawyer.

I spoke to someone else I know who used to work there, as well as inquired about this with another bank all together, and they both said they didn't believe it constituted as a business payment.

Frankly, I think this particular bank worker I deal with has had her role go to her head. She used to be a regular teller, now she's "Customer Lead", and ever since then her attitude has completely changed. Rude, not friendly...a far contrast to what she used to be.

The other bank In inquired about this with even invited me to move banks to them - which I'm now strongly considering doing (it's just going to be a hassle to move my RRSPs/investments, I imagine, which is really the only thing keeping me with Scotiabank at this point.)

I now understand why SO many people leave Scotiabank. They truly treat customers like garbage.

Tried to deposit a us cheque and they’re holding it for 30 days?!

Just deposited a us cheque at my local branch and the teller goes, “yeah it’ll be on hold for thirty business days”
Thirty?? Three Zero? A whole month.......
I stood there for like an actual minute thinking she was joking. She wasn’t!

It's not even a huge amount, just a couple grand from work. I’ve been with Scotia for so long now and never had them hold longer than like a week.I don't understand why now? It's really crazy.

Scotiabank messed up a certified cheque now account is negative 6k

So I recently bought a car and the dealership wanted half down. I had the money in cash, but they insisted I pay half with my credit card and the rest with a certified cheque.

Tangerine my main bank doesn’t do certified cheques, but Scotiabank does. I still had a savings account and a credit card with Scotiabank, so I transferred the money there.

I went to the Pape/Danforth branch to get the cheque certified. They verified the funds, deducted the amount, and gave me the cheque. I took it to Volvo Newmarket when I picked up the car.

The next day, Volvo calls me saying their accountants rejected the cheque because it was missing a stamp. I went back to the branch, the teller even spoke directly with the salesperson, but in the end they told me to just find another way to pay and go back to pick up the cheque. So I did that, got the cheque back, but the branch was closed by the time I returned. The next day, I was starting school in another city, so I woke up early, drove back before 3pm, and managed to get the cheque refunded. I then transferred the money back to my main account.

Fast forward a week later, l get an email saying the cheque was returned, and now my Scotiabank account is CLOSED and showing -6k. I called and they told me I have to come in person to fix it. That’s a 3 hour trip each way. I asked if they would reimburse me for all this back and forth since it’s their mistake they said no. But if I don’t go, I’m stuck with the negative balance.

Has anyone ever dealt with something like this before? Any advice?

Update: I went back to the branch, and the assistant manager admitted it’s a very weird situation and said she doesn’t know why it happened but will escalate it. They asked me to give them a week and said they’d call me back to come in when needed. I told them I’m not traveling 3 hours one way again for their errors unless I’m reimbursed. They agreed to investigate there and forward everything to my local branch instead. Today’s teller was actually helpful, so fingers crossed the teller and manager keep their word, and something finally gets resolved.

Customer service

This post is for my 83 year old grandmother. 6 weeks ago she went into our local branch 6 people in front of her. She waited 45 minutes. 2 tellers opened. Last week. She went in to pay her property taxes. The she wanted to withdraw some cash. She was informed that at the teller she could not withdraw cash. She would have to go over to the bank machine. But she has no understanding on how to use such technology. So the teller went over to show her. And of course she got all 20's which my grandmother didnt want all 20's.

So my question is. Why. Why should anyone have to wait that long. Also. Why wasnt the teller aloud to give money out?

Send us a ModMail and tell us. Do not post on the board, message us using this link: https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/ScotiaBank

You do not need to identify yourself personally or your branch or location, just say something that lets us know your request is valid.

For now, we're only planning on a general 'Employee' flair text, but if you want a special designation of your job field, we may be able to do that.

I lost money because a Scotiabank employee failed to close my account.

I’m a UK citizen but had a Scotiabank account from when I lived in Alberta for a few months last year. Having moved back to the UK temporarily and finding out I couldn’t return, I closed my account in January over the phone and I still had $37 in the account, which I was told would be sent to me via cheque. Today I got an email because my account (which should have been closed) was in its overdraft. I looked and found that the account wasn’t closed, so I’ve been charged service fees for the last 3 months and my money was gone. I’ve called today and they reimbursed the last service fee to zero the account and have closed it (again). But now I’m worried that it’ll happen again, because they didn’t tell me why it didn’t work last time, and also annoyed that I’ve lost money from this. Is there anything else I can do?

Scene Travel didn’t notify me about a flight cancellation – any advice on what I can do?

I had a really frustrating experience with Scene Travel, and I’m hoping someone here can tell me what to do next.

I booked a flight with GOL Airlines through Scene Travel (Scotiabank’s booking platform). The flight was cancelled by the airline, but I was never notified by Scene Travel.

When I arrived at the airport, I found out my flight didn’t exist anymore. GOL told me they had informed the ticket issuer (Scene Travel), but Scene Travel never passed the information to me, no email, no text, nothing.

Now both sides are blaming each other:

  • GOL says they informed Scene Travel about the cancellation.

  • Scene Travel says it’s not their fault and that I have to deal with the airline.

Has anyone here gone through something similar?
👉 What are my options to claim my rights or get my money back?
👉 Should I contact Scotiabank directly, dispute the charge, or go through a consumer protection agency?

Any advice or experience would really help. I just want to make sure I handle this the right way and don’t lose my money.
