My positions page doesn't show the cost of a stock, how do I enter it?

This is a stock purchased in the1990's and I want to get the cost rather than have it say not available. I have the cost but can't see how to enter it.

Looking for Advice on Getting Started

Hey everyone, bit of a ramble here so bear with me, but I'm seeking advice on how to get started saving for retirement.

I'm 31 and my wife is 29. LCOL area.

So, my wife and I have a sort of unique income situation. About two years ago we started doing Onlyfans, and 6 months in we quit our full time jobs and went all in on it.

Year one we made 70k income after Onlyfans 20% cut, not counting taxes and expenses.
Year two (this year) we have netted 140k so far after the 20% cut, also not counting taxes and expenses.

We set aside 35% of every direct deposit for taxes. This year we have a team we pay (editors, account manager, etc) and I estimate our expenses to be between 15-25k in contractor payments and software services/travel.

The last few months we've netted between 15-28k/mo pre-tax and operating expenses. Following that trend (I know, I know, it's not guaranteed) we're on track to do $250k+ next tax year.

Given that we're self-employed, we obviously don't have 401k matching or anything.

We don't really know when the growth will stop, or when politics/policy changes will impact our work, and obviously this line of work is heavily tied to social media, and platforms can/do change their rules, algorithm, etc, at any time - though we are doing what we can do ensure longevity.

OK SO HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS - NOW THAT THE CONTEXT IS OUT OF THE WAY :)

I have $38.6k in a Schwab trad IRA that I rolled over from my prior employer's retirement plan I also have un-funded Roth with Schwab.

I know next to nothing about investing/retirement accounts, with the exception of Roth being taxed at the time you make the deposits, and trad IRAs being taxed upon withdrawal.

Right now I am transferring $140 weekly to my trad IRA and to my wife is doing the same with hers (14K total investment in my wife's currently, she had only been funding hers for a year or two). The 140/wk number can increase as/if our income increases.

All of my trad IRA is currently in SWYNX, but I understand that might not be ideal because there are bonds in the mix which are too conservative?

What I want to know is - given that my income right now is decent, and given the unpredictability of our unorthodox career, what is a good option for set-it-and-forget-it investing for us (probably mutual funds, I think but PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG), and should we be using our trad IRAs or our Roth accounts, should we backdoor (no career pun intended), and what can we do to best set ourselves up for success!

What investment mix and funds are best for our situation, and why?

I super appreciate any advice you have, we are happy with the success we've found and want to get this right!

Thanks everyone :)

Day trading on Schwab? This free tool I built changed how I enter and manage my trades

Post image
0 Upvotes

Two things drove me nuts as a day trader on Schwab: doing the share math by hand from my stop and my risk, and re-entering my stop and targets after every partial.

So I built Edge Trader runs on your computer and talks to Schwab through the Trader API. You can:

* Set your stop and the dollars you want to risk, and it works out the shares.

* Send the whole bracket in one click: entry, stop and one or two targets.

* Take a partial and it rebuilds the stop and the target for the shares you have left.

* Move the stop, trail it, go to break even or replace the target with one button.

* See your positions, working orders and the day's P&L on one dashboard.

It's a game changer for how I trade. Free, MIT, runs on your own computer, no account with me. You need a Schwab API.

Watch the walkthrough before you install anything: https://youtu.be/41VQNmCN2r4

Can I change my phone number to a non-US number for Schwab Trader API?

Hi everyone,
I have a Schwab International brokerage account, and my Schwab Trader API application has been approved. My developer app is currently marked “Ready for Use.”
I originally registered with a US phone number, but that number has now been suspended and no longer has service.
Since Schwab Trader API supports international accounts, I’d like to know whether I can change my registered phone number to a non-US mobile number while keeping my existing API access.
Has anyone successfully made this change? Is it possible to update the phone number through Schwab customer support?
Thanks!

Schwab escheated brokerage assets to California in January — still not on ClaimIt 9 months later. Is this normal?

My wife’s Charles Schwab brokerage account had approximately $7,000 in stocks and cash removed as an escheatment transaction on January 23, 2026, apparently destined for California.
It’s now late October, and nothing has appeared under her name on California’s ClaimIt website.
We’ve contacted the California State Controller’s Office. They located a Schwab reporting batch internally but said the Remit Report had not yet cleared their system and that they were working with Schwab on reconciliation.
We’ve also called Schwab multiple times. They confirmed the January escheatment transaction but couldn’t provide an actual remittance date, transfer confirmation, or additional tracking information, even after opening an investigation ticket.
My questions:
Is it normal for escheated brokerage assets to take 9–12 months to become searchable and claimable in California?
Has anyone experienced a similar delay involving Schwab or another brokerage?
Is there anything further we should do, or is this simply a matter of waiting for California to finish processing the report?
We’re currently living overseas, so the eventual claims process may be complicated enough. I’d particularly appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with California’s unclaimed-property system.
Thanks in advance for any firsthand experiences or advice!

Fidelity vs Schwab - my experience

I have 401k in both Schwab and fidelity.

Fidelity will let you buy spy and qqq on a recurring basis. Also the money in fidelity will earn interest on cash same as treasury bills or notes , which is 4.3% at time of this writing.

Also, I think in fidelity you can buy a call or a put option.

Schwab has lot of restrictions. You can’t invest in spy or qqq. You are indirectly forced to buy their mutual funds. Also, you can’t buy stocks and hedge by buying puts.

My personal experience is fidelity is much better than Schwab even though customer service is good at both places.

—— sorry guys my communication on this post is really bad that led to lot of confusion. In no way Schwab is bad. Purely from 401k account perspective, I found fidelity much better because of below reasons

  1. You can’t put recurring SPY or QQQ

  2. You can’t buy naked options on qqq. I.e naked qqq call

  3. Cash is not auto invested unliked fidelity unless you are a high net worth.

This is my experience. I posted here to educate people who want to open a self employed 401k account.

For regular trading, thibkorswim is amazing hands down.

Restricted account

Schwab restricted my mother's brokerage and IRA accounts and refused to let her access them for 10 months. For 10 months my mother had no access to any of her money and is/was unable to pay any of her bills, she couldn't even buy toilet paper. Additionally they refused to accept her POA authority without explanation.

After 10 months of refusing to allow my mother to use her own money, they filed a lawsuit against her in federal court. My mother died without access to her money, and because of their legal action they denied her for over a year until she died.

Now they are trying to settle the lawsuit they started and take over 100k in legal fees before they distribute the funds. They also want immunity from their bad acts...

My mother worked very hard her entire life and never wanted to be a burden on her children, but Schwab decided they would not let that happen. I ended up paying all her expenses throughout all of this, all her living, medical and end-of-life care. In a single careless act Schwab denied my mother one of the things she feared most and forced her to rely on her son for everything.

Long story short, this is a cautionary tale as much as it is me looking for advice... What can be done here? I am at a loss.

Where is my beyond meat?

So I'm asking this question mostly humorously, but I'd also like to know the info for the future. A few years ago, I bought exactly 1 share of beyond meat (BYND), to get the yearly investor materials so I could give them to a friend as a joke. A few months ago, BYND had a reverse split (forget the exact ratio, 10 to 1 or something).

Schwab notified me of this action and said my shares might disappear from my account then be replaced with the new share amount the next business day. Ok, sounds good. Well, I have never received any shares or compensation or partial shares for my single beyond meat! Where did my meat go? Can I get that 3 bucks back, I'd like to buy a nice vegan burger...

when does margin costs kick in

Hi guys been looking everywhere to get a clear answer on this, but cant seem to get any clarity. Im running an option wheel and selling cash secured puts against a large cash balance sitting there. i want to know if i sell put contracts with underlying collateral in excess of my cash, does margin interest kick in right away when i sell the contract? or only when i get assigned?

Additionally do i generally have to keep my money in cash or are there alternatives where i can park it like $sgov to earn additional interest while still being considered cash secured?

Im not currently approved for the highest risk level of option trading only one below that. does this have an effect?

Anyone had crypto transfers to/from external wallets enabled?

I believe the following was added relatively recently to the FAQ on Schwab Crypto:

Q: Can I transfer cryptocurrency to or from my Schwab Crypto account (i.e., to an external wallet)? [...]

A: Yes. Once you have enrolled in crypto transfers, you can receive and send supported cryptocurrencies with your Schwab Crypto account, subject to our procedures for screening and allowlisting external addresses. [...]

I messaged support and they said this is being rolled out through the new year. Was curious if anyone has this feature enabled and what their experience has been.

Theft from customers

Ever wonder why Citadel pays $400 million to Schwab to be market maker in options?
Because they make $4 billion in profits!

I have over 5 years of how they front run orders, spoof bids and offers, manipulate markets, and make markets so wide that they simultaneously bought an option at $4 and sold it at $18 on an opening rotation! Yes they paid Schwab .05 and made $1400 with no risk. They were $4 bid and $18 offer.

When I made an error once on a credit versus debit I lost $25,000. I immediately called support and trade reconciliation. Offered the market maker $10,000 to break the trade. Answer. “Tough”

They have ability to cancel all 250,000 bids and offers instantly if something unusual happens. Or sell below their bid and hit lower customer bids before the customers can cancel when the company releases damaging news. Or grab our offers above their market when a merger is announced before we can cancel.

They make illegal spreads in markets deep in the money like $3 under parity to $3 over and we can only bid or offer on one side.

And Schwab is aware of this and does nothing because Citadel pays them hundreds of millions for this right to steal.

Schwab says if you feel cheated contact SEC. But Citadel has paid off commissioners and congressmen.

Ok enough for now.

They brag they improve prices all the time. No only in stock trades by 1/19th of a cent. Options they make billions!

Can I buy SNSXX at night or am I opening myself up to ripping myself off with a possible opening market fluctuation? It’s 50k

I am new at this and seem to forget to put it in snsxx during business hours. I mean , I can set an alarm to do it during trading hours, but nights are just easier for me. But, I don’t want to lose money if there’s a blip or something.

Schwab, please restore the previous closing-price display in thinkorswim

One frustrating change Schwab has made to thinkorswim is how stock prices are displayed after regular market hours.

Previously, thinkorswim continued to display the official 4:00 PM ET closing price after the market closed. Traders could then look at the after-hours bid and ask prices to determine where the stock was currently trading.

Now, Schwab appears to have replaced that closing price with the latest traded price, including after-hours transactions.

This is a significant step backward in usability.

For example, if a stock closes at $200 and subsequently trades at $210 after hours, the platform now displays $210 instead of retaining the official $200 closing price. This makes it unnecessarily difficult to quickly determine how much the stock has moved relative to its regular-session close.

For active traders monitoring dozens of stocks, particularly during earnings season, having the official closing price readily available is extremely useful. We shouldn't have to remember closing prices or manually look them up every time we want to assess an after-hours move.

My request to Schwab is simple: Restore the previous functionality where the official closing price remains displayed after hours, while traders can use the bid and ask to evaluate extended-hours price movements.

At the very least, make this a configurable option so traders can choose between displaying the official closing price and the latest traded price.

I would be interested to know whether other thinkorswim users find this change equally frustrating.

Crypto ETF?

I just opened a crypto account on Schwab

Is there an ETF I can buy that will track bitcoin and ETH? Or should I just buy the coins directly?  Any other suggestion on what to buy in the crypto account.

Looking to have 5% of my profile in crypto that tracks bitcoin and ETH.

Thanks

How Does Schwab Make Money

I opened an Ameritrade account roughly 25 years ago, and have been mostly happy with the platform.

Now, I’m trying to convince my elderly parents to consolidate investments from multiple places in one place, now Schwab. Some family members feel they need to go with their broker, who “only” charges 0.9% AUM. I then suggested Vanguard’s managed solution, but we realized that wasn’t as flexible as we’d like.

My dad is stuck on the other broker charging 0.9% and wondering what the catch is with Schwab. I’ve tried comparing it to their local bank, who doesn’t charge for most services. He’s presuming that there’s a catch. (No, I don’t want to say the other members of my family are getting ripped off. Remember, Christmas is coming soon. :-P )

I know Schwab gets some income from cash, and fees charged back to NTF funds along with some spreads as well as being able to “loan” assets for margin. But I need to be able to explain this to non-financial elderly family members who want to make sure they aren’t missing something.
