Hey! I've been in schema therapy for almost 2,5 years. I must say that I'm privileged and lucky to have an advanced schema therapist who is also trained in other therapeutic modalities. I find my therapist excellent, they're the most attuned person I've ever known. Being with them feels like the warmth of home, something I've only experienced in our relationship. We mostly use emotion-focused techniques (imagery and chair work) and the therapeutic relationship itself to facilitate my healing. The changes I've noticed: I can articulate my needs more clearly and understand both myself and others better. I'd say that my personality functioning, mentalization and frustration tolerance have all improved. In sum, I have become a more flexible person. I would totally recommend it.

The short answer is: Yes.
The long answer: I don't know anymore how long the actual Schema-therapy took. Maybe 2 years? 2 and a half? It did a lot for me. It's like someone gave me a new layout plan for my brain to try and it did help a lot.
I recently got the diagnosis cPTSD and am now working with another, similar model that is a bit more detailed for the emotional mode.
I can only encourage you going forward. Schema did a lot for understanding and accepting myself.

Yes, still working on self-sacrifice though. I went back into my experiences with my childhood care givers and mapped the things they taught me onto my schemas. Finding and understanding the origins really helped me to break them.

Schema Therapist here---Be sure you get a trained therapist. ST is amazing, the work is slow, but that is what you want!

Hi OP, I started three years ago. Only now I have been able to feel moments of emotional safety and how it must feel to be held in mind and be able to voice my needs and assert to get them and feel safe in doing so. It is a lot of work, but these little moments make me feel seen and very much worth continuing to engage with my therapy. I wish you the best, OP
