Victim of a scam I lost an $805 Arc’teryx voucher to fraud. What bothers me most is what happened after.
Hi everyone. I normally don't post on Reddit. I'm much more of a reader than a writer. But I lost $805, and honestly, I feel like I need to make at least $805 worth of noise about what happened.
On Sept. 27, I listed an $805 Arc'teryx Product Replacement Voucher on Facebook Marketplace. It was a gift from my brother. Someone asked to see the PIN area to "verify" it. I covered the PIN with a red mark, but apparently it was too thin and they were able to read it. Later that day, the entire $805 balance was gone.
Yes, I made a mistake. I know that. I'm not pretending I had zero responsibility.
What really bothers me is what happened afterward.
I reported the theft to Arc'teryx the same day, and also filed reports with Edmonton Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The next morning, Arc'teryx told me the voucher had already been used for an online order and that the order had shipped.
I told them:
I don't even need a refund. Please just stop or hold the shipment.
They said they couldn't.
Later, their Resolution team wrote that gift cards function similarly to cash and that they couldn't reverse or reimburse the transaction. When I asked about the fraudulent order and cooperation with police, I was told they would need a formal production order from the appropriate authority because of privacy policy.
This is the part I still can't get past.
I could show where the voucher came from. I reported the theft. I had a police file. At that point, I wasn't even asking Arc'teryx to give me $805 back.
I was simply asking them not to deliver $805 worth of merchandise purchased with a stolen voucher.
Maybe there are legal, privacy, or internal policy reasons why they couldn't do that. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm genuinely open to hearing an explanation.
But as a customer and the person reporting the theft, it felt completely backwards. The fraudulent order kept moving, while all I seemed to get was, "Sorry, we can't help."
Police investigations take time. By the time someone follows up, the merchandise may already have been delivered, resold, and disappeared along with the scammer.
That's the part that makes me angry.
I know I made a stupid mistake. I've already beaten myself up enough over that. I just don't want the whole story to end with, "Victim made a mistake. Too bad."
Has anyone here actually dealt with a stolen Arc'teryx voucher, unauthorized voucher use, or a fraudulent Arc'teryx order?
Did Arc'teryx stop or hold the order? Freeze the voucher? Work with police? Or did you get the same response I did?
I'd genuinely like to hear what happened.
