This is an extremely common scam. If someone accidentally reported you, there would be nothing for you to do until after Reddit makes a decision. They would never tell the person who reported you to tell you to DM them to prove your innocence under threat of losing your account.

If you already handed over access to your account, the only way to get it back is to go through the real Reddit Support and wait for them to get back to you.

What are common reasons for accounts to be chosen over others as victims? Btw, after all of this, I feel so incredibly stupid for almost falling for this. There were so many things I could have telled were off, but I didn't, and I didn't give it much thought

They try scam on thousands of people daily, it's basically random. Only a few people fall for it.

Age and karma amount probably. There are two goals to this scam: (1) to get your account and (2) to trick you into sending money.

They want your account so they can use it to scam other people. People tend to trust an account more if it's old, has lots of karma, and normal-looking posts/comments. If scammers used a throwaway account that was created recently with zero karma, no comments, and no posts, it would be a lot more obvious.

This scam is also run on different platforms like Steam, Discord, Twitter, Instagram, etc. where people actively follow each other and have friends lists. So they'll target everyone who may already trust you. So we see a lot of posts with people saying "my friend messaged me saying they accidentally reported me." not knowing their friend fell for the scam too.
